Can't Use An OEM License For Personal Use

Apr 28, 2012

A recent thread on Sevenforums got me thinking. Why does Microsoft say in their license terms that you can't use an OEM license for personal use, but they sell it through third parties (Amazon and Newegg) and they know that ordinary people are going to buy these OEM copies. If Windows Activation goes through with it then it must be fine, right? Also, I kind of mentioned this already, but why would they sell it through third parties if they CLEARLY know that any average personcould come across it and buy it. It doesn't say anywhere on Amazon's product description page that I have to sell it to a third party.

Personal VPN Without Remote Accessing

May 5, 2011

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 and a Gateway MFATXPNT ESX 500S P04 just sitting around. Lately I have been thinking about trying to make one of them into what I can only describe as a VPN. I don't really know what I am talking about so I am going to tell you my result, or the end goal, of what I want to have happen. So basically I want the "Machine" to: act as a firewall, mask my IP and Subnet Address, and encrypt what pages I visit and what I download. I don't have to be able to access it from a remote point but the option is always nice.I am not downloading or uploading anything illegal. I just want another project and I figured this would be good to do until I can go to school to become an IT Administrator.

Navigating Your Personal Folders

In this tutorial, we'll demonstrate how to work with files and folders, specifically the personal folders on your computer. Every user account on a Windows 7 machine has several personal folders designed for storing documents, music, pictures, videos and other data you work with. (We'll also be covering user accounts in a later tutorial). Being able to navigate around these folders is an important skill to master.

Windows 7 - How To Recover Personal Folder

May 18, 2012

so my lil sister brought her laptop (win 7 home premium) over last night saying it was broken. As it turns out windows does not load and it will not do so even in safe mode.

So i decided i would recover the laptop, but first wanted to get her data off the HDD. I have the HDD out and can get everything off of it, except her personal folder where all her documents are stored.

Is there any way for me to gain access to this folder or will i have to run HDD file recovery software to get the data off?

Where Do I Look To Backup Important Personal Files ?

I frequently backup files for other users and start w/ a new clean OS. I tried looking for some articles online, but none were really informative for me - wasn't what I was looking for.

I was wondering if I could get some help here. Doesn't really matter the OS, mostly XP, Vista, or even Windows 7, but I guess the file structure btw. Vista and Windows 7 arn't really much diff.

Recovering Personal Data Off An Old Windows7 HDD?

Sep 2, 2011

So my laptop's motherboard fried, and so I ended up creating a new desktop. I also got a usb enclosure for the old HDD, and managed to get most of the data off- with the exception of anything in my personal user folder- which includes documents, desktop files, and the download folder. I have the old Username/password for my old windows account but I have no idea how to retrieve it, as it keeps denying me access.

Personal Folders Visible On Network?

Nov 18, 2010

I am having a weird issue.I have a network with 3 PC's and 2 PS3's.1. My PC-Win 72. Roommate's-Vista Home Premium 3. His girlfriend's- Vista Home PremiumI have enabled sharing on all the external HDD's that are connected to my Win 7 machine.ll sharing and security has been set accordingly, and works perfect......except for some reason, my USER folder "Jay", is completely visible to both Vista machines.hen I access the Network folder on my Win 7 machine, only the Public folders are visible on the two Vista machines. The strange thing is that when I look at the properties of "Jay" folder, it shows it as being shared, yet in the Advanced sharing window, "Jay" is NOT shared. "users" folder is shared, so I am assuming this is why "Jay" is shared as it is a sub-folder of "users".

And when I look at the permission settings for "Jay", only myself and SYSTEM had permissions. Now, I managed to workaround this by adding another permission rule to the "Jay" folder. I added NETWORK and set it to DENY straight across the board. So now, my roommates can still see my USERS folder, but cannot access it.This, however, is NOT ideal, as this also blocks them from seeing/accessing my PUBLIC folder. I only set the NETWORK deny permissions on "Jay" folder, yet ALL network sub-folders of USERS are blocked.

Personal Home Computer Without Share

Jun 6, 2012

I have windows 7 and when I purchased it I had no clue about computer share and logging into your own computer.I didn't realize if I had a computer you would have to have permission to access your files. Now that I am stuck with windows 7 and I don't have permission to access files such as Documents and Settings (the little gold lock) I want a computer that is MINE alone and I don't have to ask permission to do anything.I have been through all the steps as Administrator, system recovery, reinstalling windows and I am always locked out of system? files. The first 2 steps setting up the system is country/language, which is understandable then Name and Password. What do I need to skip Name and Password, not being or sharing with any users or owner or administrator. Just turn on my computer, it opens to the desktop and go to work.Is there any way to have this luxury? I think it is called a standalone PC? It doesn't look like any of the windows 7 can be like this so what can I do without buying a new computer or is that not an option??

Personal Files On An External Hard Drive

Jan 10, 2012

I consider myself relatively computer savvy, and I even talked to my IT-professional soon-to-be brother-in-law... but now I turn to you, BleepingComputer. I really need help here.Short Version:I keep all of my personal files on an external hard drive. That 1TB hard drive was getting full, so I bought a new 2.5TB hard drive. I start working from the files on the new drive. After about 30 seconds or so, folders just show as 0 bytes and "There are no files in this folder". The hard drive works on other computers (HP laptop) but not my Dell desktop. This has happened (sort of) with three different, brand new external hard drives. What would cause this?Super Long VersionI'm running a Dell Precision T5400 workstation with Windows 7 64Bit Home Premium. I keep two 1TB redundant drives at all times, synced monthly via SyncToy. The 1TB drives were filling up so I bought two 2TB Seagate external drives. And then this string of events happened:

1) Copied all of the data from the 1TB to a 2TB SEAGATE drive.
2) SyncToy'ed them to ensure that all of the data was definitely there.
3) Retired the old 1TB drive.
4) Began to duplicate the 2TB drive to the other 2TB drive.
5) In the middle of copying, I received the error, (something like) "Cannot copy files as the source file no longer exists".
6) Checked Disk Manager, and the 2TB drive shows up as RAW format now?! It was originally NTFS. Search Seagate forums and you'll find that this is a common problem.
7) Restart. Same problem. The other 2TB SEAGATE drive now has "USB device not recognized" errors.
8) Try restarting, copying over and over. Same results.
9) Plug both drives into my work laptop (Mac Bootcamp Windows 7 64bit). Both show up as "Drive needs to be formatted to proceed".
10) I format both of them and perform check disks on my Mac Laptop.
11) They're fine. Then I plug them into my Dell Desktop.
12) I run SeaTools on them. One has an error and can be RMA'd. The other is "USB device not recognized".I RMA them both and mail them in.At this point, I hate Seagate because they seemingly sold me two faulty 2TB drives.
13) I buy two new 2.5TB Western Digital Hard drives.(expensive. btw).
14) I un-retire my old 1TB drive and plug it into my Mac Bootcamp laptop. Disk has errors. Run the recovery tool. All seems well.
15) I copy my 1TB to one of the 2.5TB WD drives on my HP laptop (it's super old, and I had to go to work with my Mac)
16) I plug in the new 2.5TB drive to the Dell Desktop, and some of the folders show up empty?!?
17) Plug that drive back into the old HP Laptop all of the files show up.At this point, I'm super confused. There's clearly something wrong with my desktop?
18) I perform the following while checking the disk in between each new trial: system restore, uninstall USB drivers/host controllers, start in safe mode. Nothing works. Same problem. Folders show as empty.
19) Plug the drive back into the HP laptop. Files are there.
20) Re-install BIOS on the desktop. Folders show as empty.
21) Run Malwarebytes, HiJackThis... nothing out of the ordinary.
22) The computer doesn't fully start up when the 2.5TB WD drive is plugged in.
23) I run startup recovery. It spits out a bunch of errors. Fixes some, some not.
24) Folders show as empty.

Good Way To Mirror / Backup Personal Files

Dec 15, 2011

I'm trying to find the best way to

1) create a disk image for disaster recovery
2) synchronize folders and files to protect against accidental deletion, erroneous save-overs, transferring to another computer, etc.

I have a 1 Tb external hard drive which is plenty of space for me to use for both. Can be either one program that performs both functions, or two separate programs. I don't want automatic backups, since I plan to store my external drive in a fireproof safe soon. I need the sync'd files to be browse-able (not contained in a single image file)...just like a flash drive basically. I would like something that only backs up new files or ones that have been changed (to cut back on backup time...but maybe this is standard for syncing and mirroring programs. ??) Needs to be able to handle long file names A nice GUI Cost - free to low (I'd pay up to $30ish...but free would be great) I was thinking of using Windows 7 Backup & Restore for the disk imaging, and then SyncToy for the file/folder syncing...but is this the best option?

Restoring Personal Folders After Reloading Windows 7

Unable To Relocate Personal Data Folders?

Jan 27, 2011

I was trying to relocate some of my personal data folders in my User Profile folder (My Music, My Videos, My Pictures). I right clicked on the folder, selected "Properties" and then selected the "Location" tab from the two rows of tabs. I set the location to my D drive (non-system drive). Clicked "Apply" and "OK". A My Music folder already existed on this drive. Got the prompts for "Do you want to move the files in this folder to the new location? (clicked Yes)" That worked for the My Music folder. Then I tried My Pictures folder... same right click, Properties, Location. Set the path to my P drive where I had an already existing My Pictures folder.

Got the same prompts for "Do you want to move the files in this folder to the new location? (clicked Yes)" Then I got a warning message that said "Unable to copy folder where one already exists (or some verbage similar to that)". So I tried it again. Nothing. Closed out of all folders and then reopened to try again. When I right clicked on My Pictures in my User Profile and selected properties, there was just a single row of tabs with no Location tab. There was no way to change the path of the folder. ??? Puzzling. So I am looking for a way to repair the User Profile folder and reenable the Location tab on the folder properties. Just did a clean install last night

Optimal Personal Folder Structure For Windows 7?

Oct 13, 2011

I have confusion and perplexity over the optimal folder structure for Windows 7. I make it a standard practice to put My Documents on a separate drive.Windows 7 allows you to move the personal folders to a new location, but in both installs where I've tried this using the documented procedures, the Documents folder disappeared and I had to reinstall WindowsSo the personal folders stay where they are. What to do? Use libraries! I decided to put a folder called My Document Center on D: and make it the default for the Documents Library. That should fix the problem, I thought. Ithasn't.C:UsersUserNameDocuments appears in the Documents library. That's fine. I expect it. This seems to be the personal folder.

I'd expect it to have nothing in it. But it does have quite a bit of stuff, it seems from program installs. That's not fine. I guess programs put stuff there because they don't use the library. Start Menu | UserName takes me to a window that has a "My Documents" folder and a shortcut to a "My Documents" folder, but the shortcut seems to be useless since it tells me I don't have permission to access it, though it indicates I could probably do so through the security tab. That makes me wonder if it is a virtual folder of some sort, though. I'm not sure what its purpose is other than to create confusion. Question 1: Is there a way to redirect all the stuff that's going into the personal Documents folder?

Duplicate Identical Icons In Personal Folders?

Jan 30, 2012

I have split my user profile onto a larger mirrored drive using a junction link. This works perfectly. However when viewing my personal folders I see multiple identical icons for favourites, links, my music etc. When I navigate to the actual area everything appears as it should be.If I try to delete one of these identical icons then both icons go to the recycle bin along with the files inside the relevant folder. Please see screen shot. I could recreate my profile and point the new profile at the relevant folders but setting up all my applications again will be a bit of a nightmare that I would like to avoid if possible.

Is It Legal To Build A Personal Rig With Windows 7 OEM License

Nov 27, 2009

I am unsure of the answer, but I think that it is illegal to build a personal rig with Windows 7 OEM license, without the intent of reselling it to a third party. In the past, with Microsoft OS prior to Windows 7, doing the same thing was legal, because back then the following clause existed in the OEM license:"OEM system builder software packs are intended for PC and server manufacturers or assemblers ONLY. They are not intended for distribution to end users. Unless the end user is actually assembling his/her own PC, in which case, that end user is considered a system builder as well."But as of Windows 7, the above paragraph has been removed. Therefore someone that builds a PC without reselling the PC to a third party no longer qualifies as a system builder. Further details concerning this omission can be found in this article: url...Furthermore, the current Windows 7 EULA states that only a System Builder has the right to purchase an OEM license, and only to install it on one PC intended for resale to a third party:

"2. Authorized Distribution and Acceptance. To distribute the Software or Hardware in this Pack, you must be a System Builder and accept this license. "System Builder" means an original equipment manufacturer, an assembler, a refurbisher, or a software pre-installer that sells the Customer System(s) to a third party." url...Here is the rest of the legal text as found on newegg concerning the OEM Windows 7 license:Use of this OEM System Builder Channel software is subject to the terms of the Microsoft OEM System Builder License. This software is intended for pre-installation on a new personal computer for resale. This OEM System Builder Channel software requires the assembler to provide end user support for the Windows software and cannot be transferred to another computer once it is installed. To acquire Windows software with support provided by Microsoft please see our full package "Retail" product offerings.
