View 2 RepliesI seem to have some problem of being overbloated with old instances of COM ports from old drivers versions which evidently these drivers don't bother to free when updated/uninstalled. I'm using Atheros BT Suite which always after installation/update assigns to all BT devices a brand new set of COM# ports, completely ignoring to reuse the old ports. See the picture. So eachtime I update driver, my BT devices get assigned completely new COM ports for communication which results that all application software used to communicate with these devices have to be resetup to new COM port numbers, quite stupid isn't it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Notebook and it has a 12 gb unused partition that I tried to delete that was used for "HP System Recovery" (Press F10) which reinstalled XP each time from the original installation . Now that is not needed because I am using Acronis Home 2010 Disk Imaging and can restore my computer with the recovery CD I have made as part of this program. I can see in my computer management/ disk management console that this is still there.
It says 12.18 gb "unallocated" I wish to free this up and use it as part of my C: drive
Can I use the "Extend Volume" Wizard to increase the size of my disk space and remove this unallocated space?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm getting the dreaded "SMART" warning about my hard drive dying so I purchased a new HD and Win 7 upgrade SW. My old XP setup was beginning to have registry issues. I can't find the original XP disk with which I could do a completely clean install/upgrade on the new HD and then transfer files and programs that I want to save. So the option is to do a transfer of my old HD to the new one then do the upgrade. Is there any way to do this and end up with a clean registry? I've got Registry Mechanic installed on the old HD but I still have conflicts, most having to do with incomplete uninstall issues that I can't seem to resolve.

View 4 Replies View RelatedLet me see if I can explain this. Since installing a registry editor called "Context Menu Take Ownership" a couple of days ago, I have had problems saving files to my desktop and accessing files located on my When I choose to save a file .. save as>desktop, It takes a full two minutes for my desktop to load in my "save as" dialog box. I can't change to say "documents" until the desktop has fully loaded into the "save as" dialog box.I then downloaded the remove "Take Ownership" reg editor at the same website above. Ran it and sure enough, there is no more option to "take ownership" of a file/directory when I right click.
However, I still have the same problem saving to or accessing a file located on the desktop, from a program (any program, on my computer, or on a website such as a "upload images") using the "save as" or trying to access the desktop to retrieve a file. This makes me think there are some registry entries that need to be deleted. I don't know what though.I should also point out, I did a system restore and system restore could not complete because of a registry issue.Couple screen pics attached. One showing a blank "save as" dialog box with desktop selected. The other is the desktop fully loaded after about 2 minutes.I originally installed take ownership because I could not get "read only" changed on a directory. It didn't even fix that. Rebooting did though.
I've unistalled Amd Driver from Device Manager, Unistalled Catalyst software and ran Driver Sweeper. There is only 3 registeries that the Driver Sweeper CAN'T delete and these are under SYSTEM folder. I've tried to change user privilegies but this far I've not succeeded.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhile windows was uploading some updates yesterday, I cleaned my registry using Iolo's system mechanic tool and that's where the problems started. (I already read and understood your message: don't use those tools and stay out of your registry. A lesson I learned too late, unfortunately.)My computer rebooted and after a couple of minutes I noticed the message: " failure configuring windows features reverting changes ". I managed to bypass this loop by running in safe mode and recover my computer to a restore point in the past. This only worked partially: I get windows to run in normal mode but I get this message: "system failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. Restore point damaged or was deleted during restore". So it didn't restore but I can get into my windows now.So I don't get the 'reverting change loop' anymore, so I can access my computer but what's the mess? Well my computer is slow as hell.Like mentioned above, I already looked around on this forum and wrote down what I already tried. [code] My computer is terrible slow because of a registry defrag/optimization of a registry tool (in combination with windows update) --> I need to find a way to get back my old registry files but system recovery ain't working.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that some of the icons I added to my desktop periodically disappear because they aren't used frequently.
I'm guessing this would have to do with something similar to the "Desktop Cleanup Wizard" in XP. How can I turn off this functionality in Windows 7? I really don't want to have to keep adding back icons that I may not use daily.
There is a lot of noise, amongst not in particularly, high-power users, but also simple home or office users about open ports, net, web ports, being used, either from Windows itself or applications. DCOM is an example of a Windows service, that is "listening" to the net,but also sends data through out it. Skype does that all the time. What about those open ports, can they be "closed'? Should they be closed, for safety reasons, not to allow to be used by malware, spyware, hackware?

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis all started when one day my G930 Logitech headset started becoming a pain in the ass to use. I had the charging dock plugged into one of the two USB ports behind my HP ZR30w monitor. Then after a few days I began to get a USB Device Not Recognized Error constantly. Like you hear the Windows Pinging sound when you connect and disconnect a USB device all the time. Its like spamming me with the sound. I tracked it down to this USB port, Port_#0001.Hub_#0011 (which is the USB port behind my monitor HP ZR30w, it is the inner most USB on the back.I ran virus scans, spyware scans and nothing shows up, I had to rule out any fishy stuff. I have no idea how to get this error to stop showing up...it literally spams me with the error and sound when nothing is plugged in to that port...as I am typing this its yelling at me.The catch is though, this is when the USB port is empty...nothing is plugged into it...it is like a phantom USB port that is just going haywire...Now if I plug a device in to it...the device works fine and the USB Device error does not show up, but for instance in this case, my G930 headset ends up disconnecting and reconnecting and throwing me errors...Is this a bad USB port? I am running Windows 7 64bit. I tried disabling the USB port all together but it still shows that a device is attempting to connect to that port and is not being recognized. Also I have updated all my drivers, updated my motherboard, the only thing i have not done is reinstall USB controllers but i do not know how to do that. In the process of finding the problematic USB port I ended up mapping all the USB ports and their numbers so how I found out which USB port it was, was due to trial and error and finding it was the one behind my monitor.
