Remove Unused Partition
Oct 24, 2009
I have a HP Notebook and it has a 12 gb unused partition that I tried to delete that was used for "HP System Recovery" (Press F10) which reinstalled XP each time from the original installation . Now that is not needed because I am using Acronis Home 2010 Disk Imaging and can restore my computer with the recovery CD I have made as part of this program. I can see in my computer management/ disk management console that this is still there.
It says 12.18 gb "unallocated" I wish to free this up and use it as part of my C: drive
Can I use the "Extend Volume" Wizard to increase the size of my disk space and remove this unallocated space?

When Microsoft first allowed a peek at Windows 8, I created a 50gb partition on my C: drive so I could take a look at it. Now, after reading about some horror stories about Microsoft's removal of support for several functions I find quite useful in Windows 7 especially its downgrading of support for DVDs, I would like to remove the partition I allocated to Windows 8 and reclaim the space on my C: drive for Windows 7. Can this be done easily without reformatting? I think I'll hang around with Windows 7 until I know more about Microsoft's intentions.

I have recently installed a 64bit version of Windows 7 on my computer without removing the old one(32bit). The reason for not removing the old one was that my DVD writer broke so I had to install the 64bit version while still using the 32bit version. I borrowed a friend's memory stick, put the window 7 disc's contents on the USB. I then made it into an image and mounted it. The installation was perfectly fine, got new drivers and all, but when I tried to format(or delete) the C partition on which I have my 32bit windows installed it displayed the following error message http://puu.sh/1YRwa I then stopped the old OS from booting, but I'm stuck here. I still can not format the partition, as it's still a system partition.

I had to reinstall Windows 7.
I guess the first install made the 100MB partition because it saw WinXP on my old partition. On second Windows 7 install this partition became free, boot files now at c:
The dumb thing is the 100MB partition was renamed D:
I was able to rename it F: just to get it out of the way of my normal naming convention, D for flight sim, E for games and other stuff.
How can I merge this 100MB partition with one of my other (D or E)?
Another thing, C,D and E are "primary" partitions. I am used to see a few "extended". Is this ok? Only the 100MB partition became "extended".

Hope someone here can point me in the right direction. I currently have a dual boot machine. Win7 and Vista. I bought the machine with Vista and shortly after 7 came out. So I installed 7 and never looked back at Vista. I want to delete the Vista partition so I can regain space on the drive but it wont let me. It's an active primary partition. Even though I am logged into 7 it says that I can't delete a primary partition.

I've taken a 1TB SATA HDD from a second computer which had Windows 7 OS on it. I have housed it in an external caddy to use as a backup drive for my primary computer. It comes up as two paritions G and H. I've formatted G to give me a 931Gb drive and I have a H drive with 99.9MB which is the System Reserved from the previous Windows 7 install. Can I format the System Reserved partition on the external drive and combine the two partitions to create one external backup HDD?? If I need software tools to do this are there any freeware tools that would do this?

The original Samsung set-up gave 3 'non-reversible' options for the use of the 1TB HDD. The recommended ⅓ drive C; ⅔ drive D choice was made but it appears drive D is empty, unused and wasted. Given the general advice, "Get the biggest drive you can afford", I don't understand the logic of this.

I have noticed that some of the icons I added to my desktop periodically disappear because they aren't used frequently.
I'm guessing this would have to do with something similar to the "Desktop Cleanup Wizard" in XP. How can I turn off this functionality in Windows 7? I really don't want to have to keep adding back icons that I may not use daily.

I seem to have some problem of being overbloated with old instances of COM ports from old drivers versions which evidently these drivers don't bother to free when updated/uninstalled. I'm using Atheros BT Suite which always after installation/update assigns to all BT devices a brand new set of COM# ports, completely ignoring to reuse the old ports. See the picture. So eachtime I update driver, my BT devices get assigned completely new COM ports for communication which results that all application software used to communicate with these devices have to be resetup to new COM port numbers, quite stupid isn't it?

There is a lot of noise, amongst not in particularly, high-power users, but also simple home or office users about open ports, net, web ports, being used, either from Windows itself or applications. DCOM is an example of a Windows service, that is "listening" to the net,but also sends data through out it. Skype does that all the time. What about those open ports, can they be "closed'? Should they be closed, for safety reasons, not to allow to be used by malware, spyware, hackware?

This all started when one day my G930 Logitech headset started becoming a pain in the ass to use. I had the charging dock plugged into one of the two USB ports behind my HP ZR30w monitor. Then after a few days I began to get a USB Device Not Recognized Error constantly. Like you hear the Windows Pinging sound when you connect and disconnect a USB device all the time. Its like spamming me with the sound. I tracked it down to this USB port, Port_#0001.Hub_#0011 (which is the USB port behind my monitor HP ZR30w, it is the inner most USB on the back.I ran virus scans, spyware scans and nothing shows up, I had to rule out any fishy stuff. I have no idea how to get this error to stop showing up...it literally spams me with the error and sound when nothing is plugged in to that port...as I am typing this its yelling at me.The catch is though, this is when the USB port is empty...nothing is plugged into it...it is like a phantom USB port that is just going haywire...Now if I plug a device in to it...the device works fine and the USB Device error does not show up, but for instance in this case, my G930 headset ends up disconnecting and reconnecting and throwing me errors...Is this a bad USB port? I am running Windows 7 64bit. I tried disabling the USB port all together but it still shows that a device is attempting to connect to that port and is not being recognized. Also I have updated all my drivers, updated my motherboard, the only thing i have not done is reinstall USB controllers but i do not know how to do that. In the process of finding the problematic USB port I ended up mapping all the USB ports and their numbers so how I found out which USB port it was, was due to trial and error and finding it was the one behind my monitor.

How do you reassign COM ports in Windows 7? I have several 30 x USB pic programmers and they are in the 70s, 80s and 90s and I know there is nothing else on the system. My programming software can cope with up to 33 x Com ports so I need to reassign to use ports in that range. how i get in and reassign them?

I am not able to remove it from Add/Remove programs, have read through some help info and attempted to use the Windows Fixit, Revo & Ripoutoffice2007, none of which have removed it (Revo didn't take it out and then pulled up a million 'left over' files, none of which I deleted).
