I encrypted my image data long back, after sometimes, i changed my OS.and i lost the encryption key which i backed up.Is there any possibility to recover the data back
View 2 RepliesNot one of the smartest things I did but my mate gave me his old computer excluding the HDDs
So I installed my HDD into it and thought while I was at it might as well upgrade to windows 7 (From XP) since I had to reinstall the OS. I installed window 7 using the upgrade option and the HDD were cleaned. I left it for a while only to come back now an unbootabe computer..... I reinstalled having to go through the custom install. I can now log into the computer.
Is the data on my HDDs gone forever? Also the OS isnt recognising one of my HDD's?? (Maybe save it for another post)

I have an external HDD (WD MyBook) that fell from a height of about 7 inches. The computer(s) will recognize it but say it's not initialized which means the boot records are fine. There are no grinding or any kind of noises at boot-up so the needle and platter seem to be ok. I started a complete recovery in EASEUS, but it's been 2 hours and it only found 54 files so far. (I know there are hundreds). Usually, on formatted drives, the number of "total files found" add up pretty quickly on this software and it is able to scan a 1TB drive in about 5 - 6 hours. This is the first time that I'm seeing such a slow reading of the drive. (Which makes me wonder again if it's physically damaged). since it's know that the best method of recovery is to start the recovery process as soon as possible, for any usage of the drive will reduce the success rate of recovery. But I'm thinking that if I just allow Windows to initialize the disk and format it with a quick format, that the only thing I'm ruining is the table, which EASEUS doesn't care about since it analyzes the disk by sectors.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI moved some folders into a folder using Windows 7 and the moved worked but all the original data in the folder disappeared.Undid the move which worked but the original folder is now empty - lost about 8Gb of images.This was definitely a Windows 7 error - I did not delete the contents accidentally I work in IT and know what I'm doing.

-During that process I got problem with network connection , so the process still ask to retry the process. After the connection is back, then I try to click on Retry and the process is completely finished.
-BUT the problem is both source and destination is empty, no file found.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got a nasty virus a few days ago and my MSE and Malwarebytes kept taking care of it but it kept coming back.Finally my computer crashed and upon reboot, EVERYTHING was gone. By gone my computer would still boot but it was loading a default desktop with ALL my icons gone and when I would try to access my C: drive, it showed that it was completely empty. Looking in "My Computer" the space was still used though.Next looking at my D: and E: drives (2TB and 3TB WDC's) I found the same issue. My Computer showed the amount of space I expected to see take and free was correct but when I would access them, they were empty like freshly formatted drives.I fired up a command window and did the following: attrib -h -r -s /s /d X:*.* X being the drive letter in question at the time. This seems to have restored MOST of my folders on my D: and E: drives. However something were still locked out with the following style errors..Also, some of the folders that were unhidden STILL show as "access denied" when I try to enter/access them. I can get into them as I'm an "admin" on this system.How do I just reset all my permissions so it's like it should be if the drive was FRESH.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a message about errors when I plugged in my WD external hard drive. I let the Error Checking run and when it finished it said I needed to format the disk. I cancelled this and looked in my computer and although the drive appeared, no details (i.e. space usage) was present.
I re-ran Error Checking with "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. After running this the drive appeared properly in My Computer.
However there are many files missing, and the space usage of what is there doesn't match up with what my computer says.
Files I can physically see: ~ 120 Gb. Space usage according to Explorer: ~420 Gb. So it looks like tha data may still be there but Windows can't see it? Edit: BTW, forgot to say, all this is booted into Windows 7 not XP on my dual boot system.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had certain partition on my HDD. I encrypted 1 whole partition using TrueCrypt. The partition is NOT where the Windows is installed. Now, I can Mount and Open the partition using the password which I mentioned earlier.What do I have to do to get the original partition decrypted and back as normal partition in HDD.I have some data in the partition, so I haven't tried anything by myself. By the TrueCrypt website, as I think they are saying is, mount the drive and just drag the files (or copy-paste the files) and they will be decrypted. Is that correct? I also had some programs installed in that partition, so where should I paste all the files? Do I need to create a new partition and paste everything there? Will the programs already installed in this partition will then work fine?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought a new PC few days ago and tried to using old harddisk and OS with it and failed badly. After some unlucky tries, I bought new harddisk and installed windows 7 in it (my old OS was Windows 7 also). I also plugged old harddisk into new PC so, I have new harddisk and new OS and old hard disk and old OS in my PC. I can access my old files but when I try to copy my documents folder to new harddisk, it gives me an error like "access denied". After some research, I know it's EFS related because files are green (it means, it's encrypted). EFS, I can't access my own files, I tried to change ownership but it didn't worked for me. I also can't change encryption settings because of my old user is gone.
Simply,
- I have some files encrypted via EFS in my old hdd,
- I have all my user and windows files of my old OS (probably EFS certificate files),
- I know my old username and password.
How can I decrypt my files? Is it possible?
On our office pc at work with a 32gb ssd i decided to do a disk encryption so that there would be a password on boot, Everything seemed to be successful upon restart i get a bsod so i put in the recovery cd that was created and tried to decrypt the drive, It says it was successful but it was not, so i did it again and still no access, I put the windows cd in and it found unformatted space i reinstalled windows 7 but the old files were not there I put the hard drive in another pc and tried to decrypt it using the cd but i unplugged it before doing so and it started to decrypt the 32gb hard drive that is not even attached which leads me to believe that the drive is still encrypted, I did a data recovery but it did not find the old files so again i think the drive is still encrypted.

Now I'm using my old "C-drive" HD as an external HD. I want to access my old folders (very important stuff) but they are in green text. I've read that this means they are encrypted, which I never did intentionally. How do I access them now? I get a msg that I need permissions that I don't have. I've tried to grant my admin acct with "Full" permissions, but still can't access these folders.

The problem is that in my pc I had some "marica.exe" malware. Now, when I try to access my encrypted/protected folder I can only see this marica.exe and none of my files/folders. Assigned a letter in disk management and then the drive "appeared" in My Computer but - the are no files on the previously very full drive. Now for the last 6 months or so I started getting issues with my machine was not displaying anything at all after turning it on. So I had to hard reset my power from the machine and then was able to see it started displaying again.At first I suspected graphic card (NVIDIA GEFORCE) but then I did my diagnostic test and nothing was found.One day, I started re-imaging my machine as a fresh and then after this it never came back ONLINE. I read all HP forums & even HP Online support was unable to help me to find the cause.Because when I turn on my machine I can see the power light was on and could hear big fan noise but mo HDD activity at all.So at this stage, I suspected either motherboard or BIOS but wasn't 100% sure what could be the real cause because I was sure it was not due to graphic card.So first I re-setted by my BIOS to see if it helps but it didn't came up at all. View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.

I have heard that you can ghost a file on the data drive into the x86 folder so that all new installs go there and then you still recieve most of the benefits of your ssd w/o clogging it up. Last week I was trying to backup some files to External HD, because of some editing that is due in three days from now. I have spent that week using Tune Up Utilities, System Mechanic, Hdd regenerator, CheckDisc Gui, Advanced System Care, checkdisk, WinDlg, Perfect Disc, PDtt (or something like that) and many other trying to fix some error that was reported by windows whenever I connected the drive to Pc.
Finally I decided to go with that same windows utility that was reporting errors and everything went fine.
But today I was trying to defrag index files on fixed internal partition with Perfect Disc that is done during boot, and Chkdsk appeared and before I could stop it started fixing something and erased 200gb of material or stored it somewhere where I can't find it. I can't find reports, log or anything.No indications of it in any of the utilities. I revealed hidden files/folders, went through Total Commander view, even Nero, and nothing, no trace of chk files. But I can see used space:

100gb used
200gb missing

It created a Hilda PC user and I also have a Hilda user so I transferred all of my files from Hilda PC to Hilda and deleted the Hilda PC folder. I went to open a .doc file I use frequently and was not able to find it. I had just used it an hour earlier so I know I have it on the PC but now I can't find it. I even ran a retrieve deleted files software in case I had inadvertently deleted it and it didn't show up. I have done a complete search of my PC and external HD and I can't find it.I am nervous because it contained some sensitive information.

I was told by an HP technician a few weeks beforehand to only give the courier the laptop without the battery in it. I recieved an email from HP this morning saying "Your unit is being collected tomorrow Fri 7 Jan as an empty box was received by the repair centre." I've replied to the email saying i didn't even put my laptop in a box and asked them if they have indeed lost it, but i've not recieved a reply yet. I'd like to know what my options are if they have. Will they supply me with replacement of the same model? I'm still within warranty, but i don't know if that makes a difference.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm having a little problem with my SSD. It's a Corsair Force 3 120GB. With the starting loss of 9GB it's a 111GB SSD. When I click computer from the start menu to view the available disk space it says 44GB. This dropped from 58GB to 44GB today without me installing/changing anything. Also, if I go into the SSD, and make sure view all hidden files and folders is on, if I add up all the space used it is 58GB, 111-58=53 so surely I should have 53GB left?
