I have a Windows XP desktop - wired to my Motorola router/modem from AT$T for a while. I been able to run a Vista Desktop and a Windows 7 Premium Home with no problem. I got the A V Guardonline spam ware. I was able to clean it up using Combo Fix and Malware Byte. After Combo Fix - at first I didn't an Internet connection. I had to go off. When I came back decided to check the Internet before I deleted the network driver. However, it turns out the Internet fine and I can still see and access my Vista computer on the network. However now the Windows XP Peer to Peer network doesn't see my Windows 7 laptop. The laptop and see the network and connect. However it can only see the vista desktop and not the Windows XP and even though it connects no Internet access. In network and sharing it shows unidentified network public. I think this should be set to HOME. How can I do this? I have Windows 7 Premium so I can't use secpol.msc. What to do? I have turned off all feature or services with the Home Group. My IP address is 169.254.141.68. I know that means I not getting a valid IP address. Also when I on Windows 7 laptop in network and sharing - I connect to my network - it sees it but then says it can't connect but when I check it is connected. It sending and receiving bytes but it can't ping or see the router.

I'm trying to link two computers together (both on Windows 7 Pro) in a network for a small business environment. My software program is installed on both computers and I need for it to be able to be used simultaneously on both machines. Setting up a homegroup doesn't seem to allow this access.

Being somewhat bored I began playing around with Homegroups. I delved into HG awhile back but never really got into it. To make a long story short I can't start the service 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol' which is required for HG. There are 3 Peer type services. One is started (Peer Networking Identity Manager). The other one (Peer Networking Grouping) is not because it depends on 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol.' Both Homegroup services are started and I have IPV6 enabled on my NIC and in the LAN properties. Also the last time I played around with HG it seemed I needed the MS Firewall service started which it is. The event log has this: 'The Peer Name Resolution Protocol cloud did not start because the creation of the default identity failed with error code: 0x80630801.

I did set up a connection between my Win 7 x64 laptop & vista x64 desktop where I could access my desktop files from the laptop but no access to laptop from the desktop & I was ok with that. Suddenly a few days back, I lost the connection from the laptop & I don't have any clue to that. I've changed the network types between home & public but it didn't work. What should I do to restore the connection.

Recently upgraded my Vista Toshiba Laptop to Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit via the Microsoft website, and now my wireless internet is not working.
I am connecting wirelessly through a router. I ran the windows troubleshooter, which says it fixed the problem, but I still cannot connect either through IE or Firefox. I confirmed that my IP address is valid via the CMD box... however, when I test connect by using ping <default gateway> I get the error "syntax command is invalid".
All other laptops in my house are working fine, and when I took mine to a local coffee shop I connected with no issues.

I have a 3 PC network (no WEP or WPA security) attached to a Thomson 760W wireless router with the latest Firmware (6.3.27.2)2 PCs (Angua and Carrot - dont ask!!) run XP SP3 (all latest updates); 1 PC runs Windows 7 Ultimate (all latest updates)There are no active firewalls,When all PCs have a wired ethernet connection to the network, everything (shares etc) works fine,When the W7 PC is connected to the network wirelessly ,W7 can access the shares on Carrot, cannot access the shares on Angua (). I suspect it cannot even see Angua and the reference is there from an earlier wired connection, cannot access a network drive that points to a share on Angua,Angua can access the shares on W7,A 4th PC running XP SP3 (not a normal part of the network) connected wirelessly can access Angua and can be accessed by Angua and the W7.W7 can ping Angua and the 4th PC (time=1ms)And Angua can ping the W7,I have the same items showing under the Wireless network Connection properties on both Angua and Carrot. They are Client for MS Networks File and Printer sharing QoS packet scheduler TCP/IP Under Network Connction details everything seems to be OK. There is an IP address and NetBIOS over TCPIP says Yes The Troubleshooter (Shared Folders) Couldn't identify the problem' and under details "no issues detected" but attempts to access a share in explorere are met with \Anguafolder is not accessible. You might not have permissions etc etc"(When hooked up wired W7 reports the permissions on the shared folder as, everyone)So it seems that is is something to do with the combination of settings on W7 and Angua,So please, what do I have to do to get the wireless component of this network working remembering that

I have a Dell inspiron mini tower that had some apparently critical either net driver deleted. I'm not entirely sure which driver it was or how to get it back. I've tried downloading a few drivers on another machine and then just transferring them to the bad one but it's not working (3 separate ones now). It was working perfectly before this "thing" was accidentally uninstalled.

My Dell Dimension C521 died on me maybe 6 months ago. It has Windows XP on it.
I put it to the side and bought a HP Pavilion G7 laptop to replace it with, which came with Windows 7 Home Premium. From what I remember I just plugged my ethernet cable into it at the time, and I was able to use my Virgin Media connection straight away, didn't have any problems.
So last week I finally repaired the old Dell and I've been using it for about a week now, while the new laptop sat unused in the other room. Now, today when I try to use the laptop again to connect to the internet, it doesn't want to play ball; troubleshooting the connection comes up with 'The default gateway is not available'.
I didn't change anything or do anything, I just didn't use it for a week and now it won't connect to the internet. The only difference I can see is one machine is XP and one is Windows 7...
I used the Windows 7 recovery disc to reinstall the OS hoping that would fix it (after a few system restores failed to address it), but no luck. When I ping my default gateway as it's shown in ipconfig, it comes back 'Request timed out' 3 times, then 'Destination host unreachable'.
"Tunnel adaptor 6T04 Adaptor: cable.virginmedia.net" doesn't have a Default Gateway listed, is this somehow relevant?

For the past half a year I have had my PC, I've always had some problems with my internet connection and Windows 7. I've always thought that it's a case of bad hardware and such but it's starting to look like it's Win7 that's giving me the finger.I've mainly been using a WLAN USB-interface and from the very beginning problems have been occurring. At first, the connection would be really unstable. It might stay up for 2 minutes or for a week. Rather annoying. I tracked down the problem and thought I had found a solution. Apple's Time Capsule has also a WLAN feature and it was Time Capsule's network I was using. I found out that Windows 7 and Time Capsule weren't all that compatible so I had to find another solution. Luckily enough, there's another WLAN in our household. It's much farther away than the other so I was afraid I might have some connection issues. And I did. The signal was weak at times and I just couldn't establish a connection. So, I moved my PC to another room and it started working properly. The distance from the router was cut down from maybe 8 meters to 2 meters or so.However, I couldn't keep my PC in that room forever and it seemed odd that when I moved the PC a few meters away from the router, the signal disappeared. So, that in mind, I went and took the USB-interface to the place I bought it from. I figured it was the interface because all the other of my devices connected to the Internet worked fine. The room is no Faraday cage. They still have the interface and I didn't get a replacement for the time being so I had to connect the PC to the Internet with a cable. At first, the MOBO wouldn't recognize the network. Then I rebooted and replugged all the cables and the ethernet LEDs started blinking. I was happy - I even checked that the lights indicated that there was data activity and that there was a 100 Mbps connection. But still - I oouldn't connect to the Internet. Windows 7 would only say that there're no connections available. I started realizing that it might be Win7. So I booted the PC up with Ubuntu since I have it on dual-boot and surprise, surprise - the Internet connection works perfectly. And here I am writing this post. The cable connection has worked with this PC before and it works now with other PCs, too.

I have a vista computer that won't connect to the internet. The Ipv6 is on limited and the Ipv4 is on local. When I click diagnose it says I need to: reboot the modem or router, get new IP settings, or reset the network adapter. I have done all of them. I also tried disabling Ipv6. It still does not work. I get an internet connection on all of my other computers.

I have Asus eee PC since 2010 with Win 7 and never had any problem. I was working on my laptop without any problem. But for last couple of hours I am not able to connect to my wireless network. It doesn't show any network. It only shows the message "Not connected. No connections available". I have internet service through out the house. Wireless is also working on my IPod, IPad and IPhone. I have desktop connected with network wire and internet is working just fine. When I connect my EEE with network cable, everything is working as expected. Only wireless is not working.
I already tried the following:
1. Restarted my eee pc
2. Restarted wireless router (doing this before, would remove any problem but not this time)
3. Tried clicking Fn + F2 buttons
Also, few minutes back my machine was updated with automatic update of Win 7 SP1. Nothing is working.. I don't know what happened. It is so frustrating to see things stop working without any valid reason.

I've tried upgrading my Vista PC twice. The installation looks like it's going along fine and after about an hour it seems like it finishes the "installing devices" part and when it restarts and comes back up it says that the installation failed and the previous OS will be restored. Anybody else having this problem?
AMD Phenom 8650
4GBs GSkill PC 8500 RAM
ASUS M3N78 Pro MB
XFX 8800GT video card
Vista Business with SP2 build 6002
I even disconnected the printer because it said the drivers wouldn't work.

I posted a separate thread about my son's laptop (hard drive problem). The hard drive (with Vista in it) is not working, and is permanently damaged (we tried to extract the data by putting the hd into an external enclosure, but while other hd's work in this enclosure, this hd does not respond at all, so it's in the trash now). My question is, if I buy a brand new hard drive and buy a fresh Windows 7 disk, would the machine take Win7? If yes, which version (upgrade, full version, etc.) of Win7 should I get? Here are the specs of the laptop:
- Toshiba Satellite A305-S6916
- 4GB RAM (DDR2, I think)
- Vista
- No hard drive at this point, it came with a 320gig hd

New laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I have two business programs that won't run on a 64bit system. Partitioned the hard drive to install Vista Home Premium 32bit to create a dual boot system solely to run these two programs. Can't get Vista to load. Followed tutorial meticulously. All goes fine until the "Vista will boot for the first time" step. After this first boot, the screen returns to the "completing installation" page. However, the process dies here and the progress bar across the bottom of the screen never moves, even after an hour. Reformatted the partition and started over with same results. Multiple attempts always die after the first boot.

A friend just bought a new HP laptop running Windows 7 Home. They want to connect their old Gateway monitor to the laptop to use as a dual-screen setup. They shut down the system connected the monitor then turned on the monitor and booted the system. When the desktop displays on the laptop it also comes up on the external monitor for just a second and then the monitor goes black. They have also tried connecting the monitor while the laptop was already up and running with the same results. The monitor had been working fine with their old Windows XP desktop system.

My laptop cannot currently connect properly to the internet. After trouble shooting, the diagnosis is that "There might be a problem with the driver for the Wireless Network Connection adapter". My laptop also wouldn't connect to the internet via cable. I'm not sure what the problem is as my laptop was working fine last night.
I have Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit) installed on my Sony Vaio VPCEB36FG.

I had recently installed windows 7 on my laptop running windows vista. I did not remove the existing windows vista installation, and thus win 7 was installed in a dual boot combination. Now, i want to remove vista from my laptop and use windows 7 only. The problem is that during installation, win 7 was installed on logical drive and windows vista was on the primary drive. Thus, i cannot delete/format the windows vista partition. Also I cannot transfer the boot drive to the partition containing win 7 because the vista partition is the active one.

I mainly use Google Chrome as my internet browser and about a week ago it started acting up. It would get stuck on a page or would repeatedly send me back to my homepage. I was able to use Skype, Ventrillo, World of Warcraft, etc. My AVG wasn't catching any problems, but the problem was happening. I would restart the computer and the browser would work fine for a little while, then stop.Following CNET's advise, I installed CCleaner and Malware Software and ran them.No problems detected.I found a similar forum here. Browsers not working, internet connection is fine And tried everything that was suggested to that user, but still no luck with my computer.I spent an hour+ with AVG Tech Support trying to resolve the issue to no prevail.

It will work fine for awhile; sometimes hours, sometimes minutes, and then I randomly won't be able to connect to anything. Windows says I'm still connected and can't find any errors, and when I try to connect to anything it gets timed-out.I did notice that there are quite a few things in the device manager under "Network Adapters," though not sure if there's anything in there that could be causing a problem. My laptop is the only computer in the house that has this issue, and it's had it on both of the connections I've tried using.
