Open File And Save As Doesn't Work
Oct 16, 2010
File|Open and File|Save As does not work at all for any application. Basically nothing happens, the dialog never opens an in my mail is not possible to upload files.. nothing, the common dialog to handle files never opens. I tried to type sfc/scannow in DOS mode (cmd). But didnt work because it said that I must be the administrator but the problem is that I am the administrator (I am the only user and register as admin).

For all my Microsoft Office products (Office 2010), when I go to initially save or open a file, the default location is the Documents folder. I rarely use this opting instead for a specific folder on my dedicated Data drive (in this case my E drive). Is there any way to change the default location? Note: I am NOT asking to move the documents folder to a different location. I am interested in using a different location altogether. Is this possible? I am using W7

I have a problem running Patran 2007 in Windows 7, the program seems to run fine, and I am able to open data bases and work on them. The problem comes in when I want to either save the database, open a new database or just open a current database. For each of these functions a new smaller window pops up so I can navigate to the correct file or path to click on it or whatever.
Initially the window opens as I would expect, but as soon as I move the mouse or try to use the keyboard to navigate, the window goes blank and I can do nothing with it. Strangely, using the compatibility setting to open the program in a 640x480 display, they do seem to work fine, but because of the small resolution, I cannot actually see the part of the window where the files are - so that also doesn't help me.
It seems as though there is something between Patran and Windows that one of them don't like, but it baffles me that everything else works fine. If any one else has had the same problem, maybe with a different program even, let me know what you did to resolve it. Otherwise any advise would be useful.

Upgraded W-XP64 to W7HP64 in August. Machine was set up with 3 hard drives in Nvidia RAID as a STRIPE. Installed a game that actually installed ok but gave BSOD. Went into safe mode and removed the game and system is working fine. I ran MSE and MBAM with nothing but tracking cookies found. Then I created a restore point but noticed that there were no others. So I rebooted and created another one. System still saying there are no restore points. So I ran CMD as admin and ran VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWS which came back "no items found that safisty the query". I can create restore points but they are not being saved by the system. I increased the size of the 30 to 65GB, rebooted and created another restore point, which also did not get saved. I've read about dual boot problems with XP, but that is not the case as I UPGRADED to Windows 7 OVER XP...over the 3 drives. Does RAID prevent the system from saving restore points? If that's the case why is it letting me create them in the first place?

The problem came out of nowhere, I noticed my computer didn't animate when minimizing, opening, or closing a window. The "animate windows when minimizing and maximizing" option is enabled. When I restart my computer, it will still show that it is enabled when I bring up that window but it won't work unless I re-apply it. This has nothing to do with aero and my video card driver is up to date. I also noticed this after I recently installed new rams but I don't see how it could affect it.

I'm in the midst of implementing Windows 7 Professional in a high school. Currently I'm running a Win2k3 R2 active directory where each machine has its own login. I created my cloned image and replicated it to several student computers to test. For some reason on only 1 of the machines it won't save any domain user's profile information to the hard drive in the user folder.

An issue with Outlook 2007 in combination with my Microsoft Exchange e-mail account was that it couldn't remember the password and I had to enter it every time I started Outlook. This was solved by adding a credential through 'control user passwords2', a workaround which can be found on several sites.
However, this doesn't seem to work anymore using Outlook 2010 with Windows 7. Or at least it seems to work different, but I can't get it to work. Outlook itself creates a generic credential in the form of MS.Outlook: USERNAME>@<EXCHANGESERVER>:PUT, but on another website I found the form MS.Outlook:<E-MAILADDRESS>@<EXCHANGESERVER>:PUT It also creates two Windows credentials, one with the username also as server and one with the correct exchange server, username and password. What should I add to make Outlook remember my password?
I also tried some other workarounds for previous versions of Outlook, but they all didn't work. I tried these: Stop Outlook/Outlook Express Asking For Your Password Every Time | Windows Vista | Windows Tools, Help & Guides Outlook 2007 won't save passwords in Vista...save password..

I have an iPhone 4 which has internet tethering. I can either connect this via the USB cable or wirelessly via my intel 6300N wifi card.
When I connect to my laptop via USB cable, the 'Set Network Location' box comes up, which I select Home Network. It is simply named 'Network', but I then go in and change 'Network' to 'iPhone'. This then shows up in the Network and Sharing Centre as iPhone on a Home Network. This works perfectly, is super fast and when I'm finished, I disconnect the USB and shut down.
When I next turn on my laptop and connect my iPhone internet tether via USB cable, I am once again asked to ''Select a location for the 'Network' network''. Windows 7 netwkr and Sharing centre isn't recognising the same iPhone is connected and asks me to set up a home network again.
I've gone into 'Merge or delete network locations' and the original 'iPhone home network' is set up (not in use) as well as the new 'Network' location that it's asking me to set up. If I merge the second 'Network' and original 'iPhone network', this removes the second network and I'm left with the 'iPhone Home network (in use).
If I disconnect the iPhone and reconnect, it asks me each time to select a network location for the 'network' network. If I don't merge them, I end up with Network 2, Network 3, Network 4 etc all the while still having the original iPhone network not in use as well as any other not merged or deleted.
Why won't it recognise the same iPhone as being connected and selecting the iphone home network that I set up and why does it keep asking me to create a new one whenever I connect?
This never happened before, with my laptop previously recognising the iPhone home network I originally created ages ago. There has been no significant updates or changes that I'm aware of, except that I updated my iPhone software, bt this has been done in the past numerous times with previous iPhone updates and hasn't happened before.
I have a Virgin wireless broadband usb modem, which the system recognises each time I connect it. It's only the iPhone connection that's not saving. The iPhone network is 'unmanaged' but so is the Virgin Broadband USB.
I have a Pioneer Dreambook P170HMx running Windows 7pro x64. If there's any other details you need, I'm happy to supply them. All I want is my system to save the network configuration and recognise when I connect the iPhone tethering that it's an already created iPhone Home Network.

I was recently upgraded to Windows 7 and Office 2010. Under my old version of Windows XP & Office XP/07, when I received an emailed spreadsheet & made adjustments to it, I was able to save it directly over the old emailed file. Now when I make any changes I am asked to save a copy of the file & to save it elsewhere on my computer & cannot save it directly over the original emailed spreadsheet. how to get this old feature back? I'm sure it's just a matter of ticking some option off.

Whenever (about 50% of the time) I use a program that'll eventually pop up a SAVE/OPEN dialog box (file explorer?). This could be ADOBE, or IE8 when I want to save a picture, or anything that'll prompt me to open a file or save a file, whenever the file explorer comes up it'll start to lag, then hang and then not respond and I have to close and restart.
Is it a windows explorer or file explorer problem? It happens on several of the computers/laptops I have the RC installed on.

Okay, have managed to tweak *most* of what I dislike about Windows 7,diabled libraries and favorites, turned off stupid giant icons and got Explorer view back to the Details/ Date Descending that I've been using since Win3.1 days. Fixed taskbar, fixed the theme, got away from all the web styled view as link nonsense, but.I cannot get the Open/Save dialog that appears whenever you use, well, open or save in most any program, especially legacy or XP-based programs (for instance, Irfanview, VirtualDub,etc)to remain consistent folder to folder.Windows 7 seems to insist, rather lamely, that this be manually set with multitudinal clicking for each and every folder. Especially if differs from the default Explorer view (i.e. Details/Descending in Explorer, but want List/Descending in dialogs)Went thru a long process that involved customizing almost every folder I have to be "general items" instead of whatever the stupid folder contents discovery decided it would be, and then set general items to be viewed a certain way in dialogs via registry edits. But Windows 7 unilaterally decided to forget most of these changes after a short time.I also killed libraries entirely around then so that might've been it.Anyhow, is there anyway to have Windows7 actually respect global folder view settings? (without using dumbass libraries/favorites)Call me crazy, but I prefer real folders not virtual ones, named intelligently based on contents or purpose (i.e. not stuff like "my documents"),all located straight off the root C drive where I can navigate to them quickly, not buried three levels deep in some favorites menu,

I am using Windows 7 in a Dell Inspiron and my live mail on my desktop will no longer open. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but my battery went dead while the computer was on two days ago, but I've been able to get into the mail since.Windows Live Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows Live Mail message store. Windows Live mail was unable to locate the message database. If you've moved the database files to a new location, click OK to rest the database path to that location. Otherwise, click Cancel to proceed, any existing messages found will be available under Orphaned Accounts (0x00000000.2) If I click ok or cancel, I get: Quote: Windows live mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows live message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. (0x8007002) So far, to attempt to remedy it: Run a disk check Restarted three times Run Repair on the Live stuff Tried system restore to four days ago I even removed my anti-virus (temporary of course) None of the above has any affect. How can I save my emails without being able to open the mail program itself? As one of the few idiots, I did not back up my emails. Where are the located? I figure if I can find them, pull them into another folder and the reload the Live stuff.

This has been puzzling me since Vista and now Windows 7; at least now I know the reason...
The type of file being changed is .txt, .css, .html, etc. Open the file in Notepad, Dreamweaver, or any other HTML editor, modify the content, and save or "Ctrl+S" the file under the original name. Windows does not allow saving the file and presents this pop up:
Reducing the content of the file generally does not result in this error, depending on the level of reduction; addition on the other hand always does.
The culprit for this error is the Windows Explorer layout, more accurately the "Preview pane" under "OrganizeLayout" section. Explorer displays the content of the file in the "Preview pane" if and when the file name is highlighted. As far as Windows is concerned at that point, the file is "opened/owned" by Windows Explorer and as such, the system locks file editing by any other application.
It doesn't matter that both the Windows Explorer and the file in itself opened by the same user, evidently Windows Explorer process takes precedent over other application process when it comes to modifying file content. This file lock is temporary and last until the file name is highlighted or Explorer is closed. The permanent fix for this error is to disable Explorer's "Preview pane", especially for people who edit HTML files with Notepad or any other HTML editor.
Interestingly, none of the MS Office files display this error when editing word, excel, etc, files. Microsoft did make provision for the Office files; however, it isn't only Notepad that hasn't been accounted for. For example Microsoft Expression Web 3 also falls victim to this error:
The "Preview pane" is most certainly a feature that should behave the same across the board instead of being dependent on the file extension. Does anyone have an idea how to make Windows handle any file extension the same way as it handles Microsoft Office extensions?

I have a desktop with Windows 7 64bit prof. and a laptop with the same. I have setup the homegroup and I am able to access all files on the laptop from the desktop and vice-versa. My problem is, my wife who uses the desktop wants to save new documents in the laptop which I use when in the office. for example: wife got an email on the desktop with an attached document that she wanted to save in the 'my documents' folder on my laptop. So when she selects save as and then selects the location on my laptop through the homegroup connection she gets the error message saying you need permission to to this, we tried it the other way by trying to save a document onto the desktop from the laptop and got the same message.
I am not an expert by any means with this sort of thing so if the replies could be as simple and clear as possible, cheers.

I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine.
