No Sound - Drivers Installed / Volume Levels Good
Oct 14, 2011
Just had my PC converted from Vista 64bit to Windows 7 and suddenly have no sound. Checked 'Device Manager' and updated driver and this indicates all is well, but still no sound. I have also checked to make sure volume levels are good and that there is nothing muted:

I am trying to transfer my band's backing tracks from a Sony MiniDisc Player to my new IdeaPad y550 (Windows 7) using 1/8" stereo jacks from the MiniDisc Player to the stereo mic in on the laptop. My record levels are fine (optimum) but playback of the file results in considerably lower volume. The VU meters during playback are at the levels I recorded but actual audio volume is much lower.Same problem regardless of the software I am using (Sound Recorder, CakeWalk, WavePro, etc.) so I am hoping it is some global setting I can't find...

I recently upgraded my computer from XP to Windows 7 now I have no sound! In device manager there is a yellow ? mark by multimedia device and PCI input device, which I am sure is an audio card I installed trying to get sound. My system is a Gateway Desktop E - 4100, Sound Blaster Live audio card. Have all ready tried Intel, Gateway and Mircrosoft to locate the newest drivers to fix the multimedia drivers with no luck what so ever. I even payed and downloaded a program to scan and update my computer with the latest driver (DID NOT WORK) and spent hours and hours searching the web to locate the driver.

I have just upgraded two HP DV9000 series laptops to Windows 7 (one from Vista and one from XP) and according to Device Manager they both have all the drivers installed just fine. Only there is no sound on either of them. The sound was fine on XP and Vista.. I know the speakers are working because when I touch the blue controlls above the keyboard the speakers emit a chirp (which is more than just a beep) but there is not a peep from Windows. Both laptops use a nVidia chipset and i have installed the drivers from HP's support pages both with and without compatibility mode. I have also used a couple of different sound drivers but still silence.

Installed Windows 7 Home Edition on an older Compaq SR1616NX. Seems to run really well after I installed the Vista legacy video driver. The sound doesn't work though. Could someone recommend a PCI sound card that'll work with this OS?

Earlier in the year I bought myself an Apple Mac Mini. I knew I could run Windows on it and soon installed Windows 7. For various reasons I'd like to run 2 copies of Windows, plus OS-X, plus a shared FAT32 partition which all OSs can see and write to. You wouldn't think that would be so difficult..!Unfortunately, Macs use the GPT disk partitioning scheme (which doesn't support extended or logical volumes), Instead, it can support up to 128 primary partitions. However, these get presented to Windows as if they were MBR partitions. GPT also needs an EFI partition, giving me 5 partitions minimum for what I need. Windows backup & partitioning tools (e.g. Paragon's Drive Backup) mistakenly see this as an MBR drive with 5 primary partitions and subsequently refuse to work.Fortunately, Mac OS-X doesn't actually need to be on a GPT drive. It'll run perfectly well from an MBR drive which should in theory save me one partition (the EFI partition). In practice however, installing Windows 7 on an MBR drive causes it to create a 100MB System partition. This leaves me needing 5 partitions again which gets me right back to square one!Is there any way to configure Windows 7 so that it doesn't need that 100MB partition?

I am currently studying about file sharing and have recently developed an urge to create two volumes that can be shared across two Windows installations. One volume will be for the contents of the user files (My documents, My Music, Downloads, etc.) and the other would be for installed applications. The main reason I want to do this is because I am currently using a machine with a Windows 8 partition and a Windows 7 partition, and the whole process of having to copy the files and install the same programs to the other partition is really daunting, not to mention a huge increase in wasted space on the hard drive. The main issue I have with the first volume I want to create, is that I really have no idea how to integrate the user files in a way that both Windows installations can find it inside the same default location. All I could think of is maybe some kind of re-direct setting or file, but I still have no clue on how to do that. On the second partition, I have experimented with creating one similar to it for games only, but when I tried to run it on Windows 8, most of the programs needed to either reinstall, or have me manually add some dll files to the Windows 8 partition.

I'm in a pickle with my machine and Windows 7 after this latest update. On startup I get an error from MMDevApi.dll saying that it might not run on Windows or... something else. This also occurs anytime a program tries to use the sound card ie. WoW, Yahoo IM, Live IM, SL, etc. I've updated my sound card drivers to the newest ones. I still get an error that says the device is detected when going to "Sound Devices" in the control panel.
Trying to adjust the sounds themselves leads me to the Windows Audio thing... which won't start even from the component list.

as I have a ntb without buttons for controlling sound volume, I have installed a program called Sound volume hotkeys - it allows to control volume with hotkeys: WIN + UP (resp. DOWN). The problem is that Win 7 has "occupied" the hotkeys, is there a way how to change it? I do not need the function by Win 7 (maximize × restore/minimize) at all.

I've got a bit of a problem here....randomly, the sound volume for my programs will drop (e.g. my music player, any games i am running, etc).
No actual change in the windows volume control, or any volume control is done....the sound output just drops. Only way to fix it seems to be to restart the affected programs (e.g. my music player).
There doesn't appear to be any pattern to it, it just happens randomly.

It just happened out of nowhere. My sound was working fine last night, then this morning I played a video and there was no sound. I clicked the volume icon in the task bar to see if I could hear the 'ping' when you adjust volume but it repeatedly froze and crashed (it's still doing this now after rebooting). Sound in control panel also crashes first thing when I try to open it. I want my sound back.

I have only had my laptop for 4 days!!! I have an HP dv6-2144nr. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I spent 2.5 hours on the phone yesterday with HP support and this morning it all started again when I booted.

I'm having trouble with controlling the volume in windows 7. If I'm playing music through either Windows media player or itunes and drag the taskbar volume slider down to 0% I can still hear sound. I've only noticed this problem last night so I thought a system restore to yesterday afternoon would fix it but I've still got the problem. There is a possibility that this problem there since the installation of windows and that I only noticed it last night though.
Some random details: I've noticed that if I open the mixer, all of the levels claim to be on the same volume. Itunes, applications and system volume sliders are all at zero but sound is still playing. If I just click on the itunes slider, the sound disappears completely and 0% volume actually means just that. The problem then is that the slider is then independent to the master volume slider and I have to adjust the volume for itunes every time.
System specs:
Dell Optiplex GX620 (Tower)
P4 3.2GHz
Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
SoundMAX integrated audio
My system doesn't even have official Vista drivers from Dell so if the problem was there since before last night then it's probably due to the drivers. If that is the case, is there anything that I could do (other than a system upgrade)?

does something like that exist? i've googled and googled, but i can't find anything. the problem is of course this; windows 7 sounds are in volume 10, then Internet is suddenly louder, say volume = 15, then foobar = 16 in track one, and 11 in track 2, and so on and so forth. a tool that normalizes sound everywhere (no matter which source, say volume = 12) is what i would be looking for, because i am constantly changing the sound volume, and this is not exactly automation - which is what we have computers for

The Volume Mixer in Windows 7 is supposed to show applications that are running sound, right? Well, mine shows some applications, like Firefox and Guild Wars 2 and Mozilla Thunderbird and KMPlayer. But it doesn't show volume for other applications that use sound like Winamp and ePSXe (playstation emulator). I'm playing Final Fantasy VIII on ePSXe and the game doesn't have a volume control itself for, say, music and/or sound effects. And I'd like to be able to turn down the sound on the emulator game so that the game volume doesn't intermingle with my music in the background played by Winamp. Is there a way I can add these applications to the Volume Mixer? Or, alternatively, is there a freeware/opensource program that will allow me to adjust the volume of individual programs?I am new here so hopefully I have done everything right. I was going to try to list my system specs here in this thread but I followed the link at the top of this Post New Thread page and filled out my System Specs according to the walkthrough.

I recently bought a dell computer second-hand from my friend, who had XP installed on it. It came with a subwoofer and a set of 4 regular speakers. On it, he had installed a form of creative volume control in addition to windows volume. The way it worked was he had the windows volume set to 100% at all times, and the creative volume control around 3% for regular browsing, 10-25% for gaming and 50% or higher for rocking out with music. I recently acquired windows 7 home premium x64 and upgraded my operating system. My soundblaster card has all the necessary drivers and the audio is all hooked up properly, and the only thing missing is this form of volume control. After looking around for the old software and trying a few different freeware and shareware programs, nothing has pulled through for me;

I have all my volume levels maxed out however the volume meter only fills about 10-15% of the scale. I've tried for hours to fix this to no avail. When I click "Test speakers" the sound levels are fine, only for that.
Things I've tried:
Updating Drivers Reinstall windows. Reinstall windows on a different HDD. Tried multiple audio devices, exact same problem with on board sound and with my sound card. Tried changing the quality of the sound to DVD, CD, Studio etc, same problem with all options. Disabling onboard sound in the BIOS, still same problem with my sound card. Updating BIOS
I'm all out of ideas, nothing I do seems to fix it. I'm gonna try install windows 8 on another HDD soon and see if the same problem is present there.
[URL]
UPDATE It seems to be only with "System Sounds" and Video Games, Steam etc.
