View 11 Replies View RelatedYesterday, a neighbor asked me what to do because all the shortcuts on the desktop, as well as everything in the Start menu suddenly would launch only Windows Media Player. Every shortcut/link on the computer lead to WMP. In other words, no program, other than WMP, could be started. Yet, looking at the Properties of individual shortcuts, the path to the exe file was correct in every case. Every exe program in the Start menu as well as all desktop shortcuts displayed the WMP icon. Going to the Program Files folder and trying to launch directly from exe files resulted in the launch of WMP. Trying to use System Tools/System Restore, going through the Start menu had the same result - WMP launched. There had been no new installation, or other change made.We finally fixed it by going to the Control Panel which did, in fact, allow us to launch System Restore and we restored the system to four days earlier. Three or four minutes later, after reboot, everything was perfect, but it was pure luck - we still had/have no idea of what took place.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo, my problem is I can't access certain links in control panel such as add or delete programs and add or delete user accounts. Also when I right click my desktop and select personalize I get the sever execution error.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen i turn the computer on i get the screen : setup is starting service. Install Windows. The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click ok to restart the computer, and then restart the installation. I have contacted acer they tried to help with the ALT and F12. Nothing I have tried works.. They told me to order the recovery discs for $20.00. I did , and they dont work either... I contacted them back, and now they say to send it back to them and for $199.00 plus shipping, they will repair the computer..I do not have the money for that..I have the the system disc, the 3 recovery disc and the language disc , that I just ordered from Acer for $20.00.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHeres my inquiry. Just bought this laptop for the mother,
Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975
Brand Spiffy New...
So, having a tad worth of knowledge about laptops et al, i went ahead and created the necessary backups, restore cds, and the like, prior to using.
This will be sent home to my mother, who is quite fairly like all our mothers, who arent as computer savvy as we'd like our parents to be.
Anyways, tried to download CCleaner, as well as AVG, but noticed when the download window (grey old school download popup), it doesnt seem to continue.
First CCleaner says "unable to download from site, webpage not accessible blah blah blah...:
Second, AVG is STILL currently trying to do so as well.
I am also running on a wireless connection.
Browser is set to default values, nothing yet changed.
My laptop suddenly stopped opening hyperlinks. I noticed when googling and got to a white page that said it could not open and had "doubleclick" in the error message. So, I am assuming I somehow have some virus, although I'm not sure how, since it worked fine the day before, and the only sites I was on the day is my work email (secure) and my online school (secure). Didn't even check gmail. I ran spybot and asqaured and didnt find anything.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got my bro's computer, formatted it and installed windows 7. It won't get past the windows 7 logo screen at all, so I can't get into desktop. When I try to go into repair mode it loads for a while and then just freezes. I have done safemode and can't get passed it either, it stops at CLASSPNP.sys. My computer worked fine with Windows XP and I tried to go into windows XP and then put in the windows 7 disc and install it there, no luck. I have re-installed quite a few times. Could it be that since I formatted it doesn't work because something important got removed? This computer didn't come with a DISC of any sort. I don't even know what to do anymore, I know the the computer is fine since it works with windows xp. but not with windows 7!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an acer aspire laptop. Last night firefox stopped responding and from that message the whole thing, completely froze. Tried safe mode networking and it worked, but normal mode would not work at all. Tried a few hours later and restarted it then froze again once restarted in normal mode and hasn't worked since... yet safe mode works fine. Can anybody help? Please! The only way I could shut it down was to take the battery out. I turned it on, entered my password and when it loaded froze immediatley. I tried again, again the only way of shutting down was to take the battery out, and when turned on I was greeted by a black screen and nothing else. [code]
View 3 Replies View RelatedI would like to know about VMWare Player. First of all, I would like to know about the bios setup in VMWare. Now what I want to know is if the bios acts the same as the actual bios setup in my computer. And also, there is a Wake on Lan option in the VMWare player bios setup. Now does this really work and wake up other computers when they are off or in standby? That is what I really want to know from you. And I also would like to know on what kind of computer manufacturers work with my VMWare player.Does HP, Dell, Acer, Asus and all the rest of the companies work together. Like lets say that I downloaded Windows 7 and put in my VMWare player, and then I went to my system properties, what would the computer manufacturers be? Like what would it say? Well for my computer I have an Acer Aspire 5733z model notebook. Now lets say that I downloaded a driver, like a lan card adapter for a Dell Optiplex computer. Would I be able to download that driver on my VMWare Player? Because I know that VM Player is virtual, and it is not my actual computer, which is my Acer Aspire 5733z. It is just powered by VM Ware.
Now for example, my Dad at work has a Dell Inspiron mini netbook, which is a 1012 model. And he has a Dell wireless lan card in his computer at work. And I also installed Team Viewer on his netbook computer. Now like every time he goes home and leaves work, he shuts down his computer, and his Team Viewer ID number goes away. And I do not like that at all when he shuts down his computer. Because once, it is shut down, I cannot make his ID number come back online, because his computer is off at work. Now what I was wondering was does the Dell wireless lan card have Wake on Lan settings on it in the properties of the network adapter? Because I tried everything to wake up and turn on his computer, but nothing just would work for me. By the way, he is not on a Lan, he is using a wireless connection, from a Dell wireless lan card, itself in his Dell Inspiron 1012 mini netbook computer. Now I would really like to know on how to wake his computer up, if it is possible. So just let me know on how to do this for me, step-by-step. All righty? And I would think that VMWare player works just like an actual computer with the bios setup, and everything. And if I download a certain driver, that should work too, I am assuming. So just let me know if this process will work. So that is that part. Now the next part I would like to know from you, is I want to get some Mac addresses from certain people. Like because I have a lot of friends, and they need some help on various things on how to troubleshoot issues on their computers. And for this I would need to use Remote Desktop. But lets say that their computer was off, and not turned on, and I needed to turn it on. Could I turn on their computer remotely with their mac address if I knew it? But I am assuming that I can turn on any computer if I had their mac address. And I do not have a Wake on Lan option in my actual real bios setup. So for that, I would have to enable the Wake on Lan in my VMWare player bios setup. The VMWare bios setup is by American Megatrends. So that should work. But mainly what I am saying here is that, I would like to know on how to get someone's mac address, by using an IP scanner, or a mac address scanner.
my acer aspire 9410 dvd driver wont work now that i have upgraded to windows 7. It says it is incompatible. I have looked on the acer site and it appears for the 9410 they don't have drivers for windows 7.I tried the vista drivers download but it won't work. Any ideas on how I can get the correct driver? The message I get says "contact vendor for a new driver code (code 48)

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt turned on like it usually does with the ACER logo on the screen, but it goes to a black screen came that said:
We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
Followed by some more text, and then it asks how I would like to start windows up, in safe mode(s), last known good configuration, or start windows normally.
So I just select Start Windows Normally and it started to boot up, with the Microsoft Windows 7 loading screen. Then KABLAM! The black screen with the different options popped up AGAIN. I then tried every single other boot option, all the safe modes, everything, and every time it would show that black screen with the different boot options(that don't work). So I hit F8 and tried all the options in there, reboot, debugging mode, all of them, they all did the same thing and brought back to that dreaded black screen. I tried everything...except for the obvious destructive restart.I know I will probably have to do a complete restart of my computer, but before I do that, how can I backup data from a non-functioning laptop? Right before this happened, I was going to backup my data, but this happened. I know I need to do a backup all the time, but I was being dumb. I deserve this.
