Missing CD/DVD Driver Workaround That Works

May 11, 2009

This is how i got windows 7 to install when all else failed.

this IS NOT for dual boot, you WILL LOSE all data currently on your drive,

Back up, or combine with a dual boot tutorial if you want.

(Also great if you cant boot from a thumb drive, or dont have a dvd drive)

download windows 7 iso

download and install 7-zip if you dont have it

download and burn Gparted Live CD

download and burn hirens boot cd (everyone should have this, even if you choose not to follow this tutorial)

Boot from Gparted Live CD, Default Settings (first option)

select 'dont touch keymap'

enter for language, enter for mode

Resize current partition so you have around 2 GB unallocated space

create new partition on 2 GB of unallocated space (change 'free space following' to 0, create as Primary, File system NTFS)

apply, Quit, Exit, reboot into windows

windows will boot, then tell you it has finished installing new devices. go ahead and reboot again if it asks you to

browse My Computer, you now have an additional 2 GB Local Disk.

right-click drag the windows 7 iso into this drive. select 7-zip > Extract Here.

once files are extracted, boot up Gparted once more. delete your other partition**

**if you want to just resize your old partition so you leave your old OS on the drive for backup or dual boot, feel free, but im not covering dual boot here, and im not responsible for lost data, or boot problems getting back into XP.

(leave the 2GB Partition alone)

Then Create a New Partition on the unallocated space (create as Primary, File system NTFS)

apply, Quit, Exit.

Reboot, this time into Hirens Boot CD

boot up Hirens Boot CD, open up Fdisk under partition tools, and set the 2gb drive to active.

this will allow you to boot up this drive partition as if it is the windows 7 disk, bypassing your dvd drive and eliminating missing drive errors.

reboot (you may have to press esc or something during to boot process to select the drive to boot, but both times i did this it booted right up into the windows 7 drive with no problems.

seems like a lot of steps, but it really only took about 10 min extra once you have gparted and hirens burned.

again, i only did this twice, once to figure it out, and once to write this walkthrough. it worked perfectly both times, but i cant garuntee it will work for you.

IE 9 Works, But Is Missing From Program Files?

Aug 16, 2011

I have been trying to update Windows 9 (Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems) and it refuses to install. I get a message to the effect that IE is not installed correctly on my computer. When I click the IE icon in the tray, IE9 opens up and works just fine, but it does not show up in program files, does not show up when I try to find it in an uninstall program, and does not show up in any history of updates. What I would like to do is remove and reinstall, then do the appropriate updates.Would I be safe just installing over the current invisible installation?A second strange issue is that Kapersky says it is installed and functioning, but Windows says it is turned off[CODE]

System Reserved Partition Is Missing, But Windows 7 Pro Works Fine?

Feb 16, 2012

I have a Windows 7 Professional system that I went to take an image of using EASEUS TODO Workstation. When I went to do the backup, I noticed that there was no 100 MB System Reserved Partition. I made the image anyway. When I tested the image on a new machine, it prompted me to repair or start windows normally. Unable to start normally, so I did the repair. After about 10 min, the system came back and said it cannot repair.Outside of start a system from scratch, is there a way I can get the system reserved partition out of the Windows 7 partition?

Firewall And Network Printing Workaround

Jul 3, 2009

Usually I disable Windows Firewall because it's annoying to hit "allow" every time i run each of my 30-40 games for the first time. I use avast! and nothing else, since I usually don't visit "adult" sites or anything out of the ordinary. I was thinking about getting zone alarm, though.

Well I need network printing to be enabled for the rest of my family to print without having to kick me off, but for network printing to be on windows firewall must be turned on. Is there a workaround, or do I just need ANY firewall turned on, not just Windows Firewall?

Sony Vaio Laptop Cursor Random Movement Workaround

Aug 23, 2011

I recently bought a new Sony Vaio laptop and got on great with it until I noticed an aggravating problem.

Whenever I was typing some text, the cursor had an annoying habit of jumping all over the place, so I'd find myself typing text in the middle of a sentence I'd completed earlier.

It turns out that if you use a mouse without disabling the touchpad, the two conflict with each other, which results in this erratic cursor behaviour.

Why use a mouse you may ask. Well, I suffer with arthritis from time to time and a wireless mouse is easier to use than the touchpad.

So, if anyone has a Sony Vaio and is experiencing the same problem just go to:

Start>All Programs>Vaio Control Center>Categories Tab>Expand Keyboard & Mouse>Double-click Built-in Pointing Device>Uncheck Enable box>Apply>OK>Yes.

This disables the touchpad and stops the erratic cursor movement.

Workaround For Files That Cannot Be Accessed ("Access Is Denied")

Mar 11, 2012

A few thousand of my pictures could not be accessed anymore after I had to re-install my whole computer after a crash. They all got the error message: "Access is Denied". Also copying and deleting is impossible. With the great free tool UNLOCKER I could still delete them. Then, searching for an explanation, I found forum posts trying to explain that the error message had to do with older Windows versions, different folder systems, links instead of real files. I didnt understand at all, but wanted to follow up the advice 'take ownership an change permissions'. So I went to the Reccle Bin and restored the unaccessible files. Surprise! After restoring their behavior was completely normal.

1. Install UNLOCKER

2. Rightclick on the unaccessible files (group selection possible) and select DELETE.

3. Go to the recycle bin, select the same files, right click and select RESTORE.

4. Files should be accessible now.

SB Audigy SE - Driver Works, Sound Doesn't

Dec 10, 2009

So I have a SB Audigy SE (SB0570) and I installed Windows 7 about a month ago. Initially, my sound did not work even though I installed the drivers correctly. It began working one day when I restarted the computer in safe mode and then restarted it again normally.

Today, however, it failed again. The only thing that I can think of that has changed is that I installed drivers and software for my Sony Handycam last night. I've since uninstalled the software, but to no avail. When I click on the sound icon in the system tray with Winamp playing, I can see the green bar jumping up and down, signifying that there is sound. I've tried using speakers and headphones, so I know it's the sound card that's causing the problem.

I have uninstalled my drivers and I've tried daniel_k's drivers (first the ones that were too new for the SE - lol - and then the ones that were designed for the SE, the 2.0 version), the drivers that Windows 7 automatically downloaded for me, the 917x support pack, and the drivers that Creative provides on their site for Windows 7. None of them made any difference. My current driver reports its version as 5.12.1.2020, and Windows says that it's working correctly.

Can anyone tell me why I can't get sound even though my drivers seem to work? What might have caused this seemingly random problem?

Nvidia Driver No Longer Works - Graphics Card Broke?

Dec 18, 2012

a few days ago on boot up my laptop restarted and then attempted windows repair. came back to life. tonight while viewing Internet my screen went black. i had to hold the power button down to restart. i chose start windows normally. when attempting to load windows i got a blue screen saying "attemp to restart display driver has timed out". after a few attempts i have managed to get it into safe mode and deleted the nvidia graphics driver. restarted and all was fine (low resolution). i installed the graphix driver again an it happened again. is my graphics card broke?

alienware m7700 d900k
amd athlon 64 x2 4600+
geforce 6800 ultra
windows 7 64
2gig ram

the nvidia driver does not detect my graphix card so i have to add it in the setup information file. but i have had no problems for about nine month since i bought this laptop second hand.

i joined this site for another problem a few days ago. slow speeds and constant hdd access but had a good clean out and was going to see how it went. then this happened. i do not think they are related.

Cd/dvd Driver Missing (RFM)

Oct 7, 2009

Ok so I think I have a new one. I downloaded a copy of Windows 7 and obtained a key through the MSDNA program that my uni subscribes to. This is a completely legitimate operation that (from what I can see) is putting out the release version of window 7 a bit early. When installing I don't get any "This is beta software, it may break" style messages and while I can't find the version string, I'm thinking that it is what is going to go out to the public.

Through the MSDNA program a downloader gets the iso, and then verifies the CRC so there is no chance of a download error.

So I try to install and every time get "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. (etc)".

Here is what I have tried, roughly in order.

Official sata, then raid, then ide drivers from motherboard manufacturer (via flash drive). Using IDE cd drive (liteon) instead of sata cd drive (liteon) Using a usb-based cd drive (optiarec) on different usb ports with various states of other drives plugged in / not plugged in. Using a flash drive to install by copying files from iso. (worked fine.

Same cd error messageTried this with various states of including and removing cd drives because I though if installer could not see any drive it may cry. Tried along with above drivers. Tried along with all previous vista installed drivers from drivestore folder and around. (took bloody ages) Tried with other non-official drivers Tried a few cd, ahci, etc drivers from vista.

Tried various states of using previous versions (7100 and 7048) drivers. Went back to the sata drive, then the IDE drive with various different bios settings. Tried sata drive on different chipset (I have two different sata controllers on the board). Unfortunately could not turn main sata controller off because I need it for my hdd.

Tried various drivers and driver packs semi-official, then anything I could find on rapidshare etc. These included large nforce packs. Tried removing all the sata hdds except the ones I need. Burnt a 7100 dvd which seemed to work fine. Tried cd swapping at various stages of install (i'm getting desperate here). Tried changing boot order as per windows kb [edit] Also: (gah it deleted my edit)

I am running a M2N32-sli deluxe board. It's an epic board with vast amounts of feature but I can't set ahci / ide (etc) mode on it. I don't have the official driver cd for this board any more, but I've tried all the official drivers and they don't work. I'm trying to install onto raided raptors, So I can't install on a different system and move the drives (I could but it would be messy and I'm not quite that desperate yet).

I think thats it I have read every forum thread tried everything I possibly can. The stupid thing Is that in searching for a driver I can look in my large (1tb) volumes, the flash drive, and cd drives and even my raided raptor drives. Everything works fine but because of this (I'm beginning to believe bugged) screen I can't go any further.

To try next:

Different methods of flash installation (bartpe instead of straight copy) Bios updates for motherboard / drives (pretty sure running close to top version though). Other ... dirty ... tricks.

I'm supposed to be getting this version as the pre-cutting edge wave of folks who are going to say yer go get this it's awesome and people believe me because I do everything with computers. If I can't get past things like this then lamen folk sure as hell aren't going to be able to.

CD/DVD Driver Missing

Nov 20, 2009

I'm building a multimedia server that is going to be running Windows 7 Ultimate as the OS. I have a full version of Windows 7 Ultimate and I created a bootable flash drive and loaded the ISO files on it.

This new system doesn't even have a CD/DVD drive installed on it which is why I'm using a flash drive to install it. Everything boots up fine from the beginning, asks me for the language and all the other stuff. When I click on INSTALL it then gives me a screen that says:

"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for his step." I have done a little bit of research and people suggest using the SATA drivers for the motherboard. I've tried that and still doesn't work. I have all the minimal stuff on the motherboard. Only one SATA HDD (500GB WD Green) 2GB of RAM, USB keyboard and mouse and that's it.

The only thing I can think of is that Windows doesn't realize it's being installed from a flash drive. I tried hooking up a DVD ROM drive to see if that would help but still got the same error.

I have been trying to install Windows 7 Professional x86 several times, and always encounter the same problem.

I downloaded Windows 7 via the MSDN Academic Alliance and then copied all files to a recently reformatted 4Gb USB stick.

Then I changed the BIOS settings on my computer to boot from the USB drive, and it boots and then starts. When i press on the Install button however, it says its starting the install but then quickly and the following message appears;

"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step." The message also allows me to browse for said missing drivers, but i cant find any drivers anywhere.
