MDT 2010 Linked Deployment Share
Jul 27, 2010
I have MDT 2010 setup and am in the process of setting up a 2nd share, I created the share with no issues, and created the "link" without issues as weel. I am now trying to get the linked share to replicate, and am getting an error that the "everything" profile is not valid, when it does exist on the new share. I even tried creating a new profile and setting it to that one, still get the exact same error.

I am trying to set up a MDT Deployment that will install Win 7 and MS Office 2010. With the Win 7 install I am able to have the system ask for the Windows Key after the install has completed. I would like to do the same for MS Office. I am going to be using this deployment tool for every new computer we get going forward and don't want to have to update my deployment every time I run one. I simply would like to deploy the image and then enter the Product key and activate it.

i want to dpely windows 7 across around 10 PC's but minimise user downtime, as such i intend to install manually using retail versions of the software then update to the specifications i need. all the final workstations will need to be the same.i have 3 pc's to roll out, then i will drag 3 in, upgrade, redeploy and so on, thus meaning that noone will loose much productivity to downtime.whats killing me is that after install, which takes around 30 mins including office and other bits of software, the patching and updating of windows on each machine to latest KB updates is taking forever!! so with say 10-15 new pcs all trying to install updates within few hours its going to slow the network to a stop.is there anyway i can take one of the pc's i have finished, image the updates and software installs then patch them all onto a new clean install of retail windows 7? have looked at all sorts of networkable options such as microsoft system essentials or symantec ghost, but none will allow a stand alone image creation off network that i can tell

I am currently looking for a solution for customizing windows images and then automating the deployment/Out-of-box Experience (OOBE) for the business I work for. I have done some research for what is available, but so far I find the Microsoft solutions to be complicated or not quite what I need. I have done a bit of exploration with Microsoft Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), but found that WAIK is a bit too complicated, and I don't believe MDT will suit our needs.Here is a bit of background information to familiarize you with our environment/needs:Customization:
-Currently we are taking the factory Dell image that comes with the laptops and customizing it to our needs by uninstalling bloatware and installing our default applications. We are also customizing the image by configuring power settings, screen saver settings, IE homepage, etc. To do this, we are currently forced to use local group policy, which disables the option to let the user change said settings. Currently, we do not have our domain environment setup with the proper OUs to use domain group policy. Therefore, we are using local group policy as a temporary solution. Once all of these settings are set, we create a backup image of the system before using sysprep, then we sysprep the box and create another image before booting the system again so that we can install the image onto computers and have them boot into OOBE for setup.
-We want to be able to set the desktop background, profile picture, IE homepage, screen saver, and power settings as defaults - i.e. giving the users permission to change them after receiving their system. Using group policy disables the ability to let the user change the settings after receiving the computer. Of course we don't want to use local group policy at all in a domain environment, but without our domain setup with the proper OUs, it appears we currently don't have an alternative.
Image installation/deployment:
-Currently we use Symantec Ghost to copy our customized image to each box. The OOBE is not customized at all, so each time we image a box, we have to manually select language settings, time settings, connect to the wireless network, etc.
-What we want is to be able to automate the process by predefining most of these settings. That way, when we startup the computer with the new image, we only have to enter the user account and computer name, while the rest of the settings are automated.
From what I understand, XP deployment was done using an unattend or answer file that you used to answer the prompts in OOBE. As I said before, I have done some research on WAIK and MDT, but they don't seem to be user friendly (specifically WAIK) and will take a whole lot of time to learn and then more testing to see what works and what doesn't. My hope is that someone could show me possible third party tools for customizing the image and/or automating the OOBE/deployment process. I am currently encountering issues with setting a custom desktop background for new users, which should be a very simple task, but Microsoft doesn't seem to want to make it simple.

I've been running disk and system maintenance on my computer, and sfc found some corruption it couldn't repair. It looks like it's .NET framework 4 that has the errors, so I uninstalled it and its updates, then reinstalled it and updated it, but the problem remains. Since that didn't solve it, I'm not sure if that's where the problem is or what to do about it. Anyone know which files I need to look at before I resort to doing an upgrade/repair installation?

Have one laptop running Windows 7 Build 7100.
And a netbook also running Windows 7 Build 7100.
On the laptop I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
On the netbook I am running Avira anti-virus (although this problem existed when there was no anti-virus program installed).
I created a homegroup on the laptop and shared all folders.
I then joined this homegroup from the netbook (and shared all folders there too).
So under homegroup on either machine, I now see the other computer's name.
If I click on that name it brings up the libraries- documents, music, pictures, videos.
But if I click on any of them, nothing happens. If I right click, then properties it says 'the properties for this item are not available'.
Something seems to be preventing the machines from sharing these files properly.
I have tried looking in Kaspersky but can't see what might be 'untrusted' that I should mark 'trusted'.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Homegroup was the main reason I installed Windows 7 on the netbook!

I want to create three Windows 7 OS on a disk partitioned into three primaries. I would like these individual OS not to be able to reach each other during use. Sealed off from each other so to speak. Is this possible? The second disk I have partitioned into three, each partition I want to link to each individual OS and have them sealed off from eachother as well. Is this possible?
Illustration:
disk 1 OS 1 --> disk 2 partition 1.
disk 1 OS 2 --> disk 2 partition 2.
disk 1 OS 3 --> disk 2 partition 3.
Can these 3 systems with their corresponding linked partition on disk 2 be completely sealed off from each other?

Is there a mechanism which would allow the discovery of hard-linked files under Windows?Linux has the inode number, which is the same across hard-linked files (providing they are in the same filesystem)I can't find anything which identifies a specific physical file under Windows.Is there even a mechanism which defines whether or not a file HAS hard links? Again, Linux has the Link Count, which gives the game away.

I recently turned on my laptop for it to constantly arrive to a black screen just before I select the user login. I read some instructions on a different forum stating that I need to log in to the computer via the safe mode and un install my display driver which is Intel(R) HD Graphics, I did this which enabled me to get back onto my original login but at a price.My driver now says that it's VGA, My screen resolution has changed, every app I use crashes constantly as well as any videos/films I play they crash, skip every minute or so.Yet if I update the driver I end up back at square one, the black screen.My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742 with Windows 7.I've also tried the windows recovery which crashes.

Getting the message after Sysprep stating "Sysprep Fails After Deployment With: Windows could not finish configuring the system...."This is a new out-of-box Lenovo T530 laptop, it came pre-loaded with Windows 7 Pro.I pulled laptop from box and inserted our Windows 7 Pro SP 1 disk and installed our copy. I then configured all settings and applications under "audit mode", created an "Unattend.xml" file using the WSIM, and copied that file into the Sysprep folder and ran "Sysprep /shutdown /oobe /generalize /unattend:unattend.xml"The error message appears after I image drive using Ghost GSS 11.5.1.2266. (I'm assuming the error would appear after boot-up regardless of imaging the machine)I have read numerous articles regarding this error and have also disabled the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" as suggested by many. I'm also assuming that the "Hotfix" for this issue does not apply since I am installing SP1.I am able to boot into the machine after attempting to boot into "safe mode" first (as suggested by many users), however once in, it looks as if the XML file is completely ignored.

I've been trying to create a Task in Outlook from a Word Document that I have created on this computer. The idea is that a shortcut to the document is created as an Outlook Task. Click on the shortcut, and voila - there is the document.The "Create Microsoft Office Task" icon DOES send the document to Outlook as a Shortcut in a Task, however, when I open the task, Outlook says:"Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments: Shortcut to 'document name'."It's NOT an unsafe attachment; Outlook WILL OPEN this document if I send it as an email attachment. Outlook will open .docx files types.

I have used 7 (64 bit) long enough to be confident in using it as my main Windows machine.
Part of that is being a print server. I am staying with Workgroups to allow connecting to Linux boxes using Samba.
I installed the printer just fine.
But I can't see how to share it.
Google searches helped me verify some things.
Under Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings I do have File and Printer Sharing enabled.
Under Advanced sharing settings I have set the radio button to Turn on file and printer sharing.
But when I go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel, and go to properties of the printer, I do not have a sharing tab. Or anything share related on the context menu.
I can access folders on other machines, and I can share folders, but I get prompted for a password on other machines even though I have disabled passwords. That is a lower priority.
How can I share the printer?

There's something very basic about "sharing" that I'm misunderstanding. Does the term "sharing" mean sharing with other computers on the network?
If so, then how do you share folders with another user on the same computer? Here's an example: Each of my sons has a Standard user account on the same computer. So 'A' can't access 'B's files, and 'B' can't access 'A's files. They want to be able to share certain folders, like pictures and music.
They could simply copy folders they want to share to the Public user folder, but that's not a practical solution. How do users on the same computer share files and folders? Is it possible to put restrictions on sharing ('B' can view some of 'A's photos, but he can't edit them, etc.)? There's got to be an easier way than fiddling with access permissions, which often ends up with unintended consequences.

I recently purchased a new routeur, D-Link's DIR-825. I am quite happy with it's performance so far, the main reason I bought this model was that it has a USB port so that I could use a HDD as a network.I installed the "Shareport" utility provided by D-Link and yesterday I finally got around to plug my HDD into the routeur. Things went smoothly and I was able to "connect" to the drive from my home computer.I then turn on my laptop, which is my work computer, and tried to connect to the drive. Shareport told me that it was already connected and needed to be disconnected.I mean the whole idea behind me buying a routeur with a USB port was to have a hard drive that would serve as a network backup that could be accessed by both computers at any given time.Besides, if only one computer can be connected to it at a time that's not what I call sharing, the "Shareport" utility should have a different name then.Now is that inherent to this type of setup or is it simply a show of the software limited capabilities?

Okay, so I've set up network drives before going from XP to XP.. but a long LONG time ago and can't really remember what I did. Looking through Windows 7 also, it's all changed and a bit confusing :$.
I have two computers.. my main computer running Windows 7 64bit, and my server computer is running XP Pro 32bit. I want to have my server's 250GB drive (the only drive in the computer) accessible via my main computer as if it were plugged in.. so under 'my computer' it'll show something like "Server X:", X being the drive letter giving to the server's drive, and when I double click it I'll see Windows, Program Files.. everything and un-restricted.
Could anyone help be get this sorted and set up?
If anyone has links to a tutorial / step-through that would be very much appreciated.
I need my server (localhost) computer up and running as soon as I can as it's for my home business.

I've already changed the "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" to "Send LM & NTLM responses". I wasn't able to connect at all before that.

I upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium from Vista on my desktop. My home wireless networ was running smoothly. Since the upgrade I am no longer able to access my printer (Canon i9100) from my laptop running XP. My XP recognizes the network complete with my W 7 desktop and my son's Mac mini. The XP just will not connect with the printer the printer is a USB printer that functions well if directly plugged into the XP. When I try to print from the laptop with the printer plugged into the Win 7 desktop tho, it doesn't find the printer.
When I try to "add a printer" to the XP through the Win 7, it keeps wanting to download the correct printer drivers but cannot find them anywhere. I have the original disk that contains the drivers but it will not load onto Win 7 (doesn't like 64 bit). Canon does have drivers for 64 bit so the printer works fine on Win 7. Is this too complicated a post? It's late and I'm pretty frustrated with the whole subject.
