Is There A Mechanism Which Would Allow Discovery Of Hard-linked Files Under Windows
Nov 29, 2012
Is there a mechanism which would allow the discovery of hard-linked files under Windows?Linux has the inode number, which is the same across hard-linked files (providing they are in the same filesystem)I can't find anything which identifies a specific physical file under Windows.Is there even a mechanism which defines whether or not a file HAS hard links? Again, Linux has the Link Count, which gives the game away.

In XP, and previous IE's we'd click on a link to an excel file and it would pop up within IE, so we could quickly view it. I would like this in IE9, I have not had luck searching for a solution to this in Windows 7/IE9

I want to create three Windows 7 OS on a disk partitioned into three primaries. I would like these individual OS not to be able to reach each other during use. Sealed off from each other so to speak. Is this possible? The second disk I have partitioned into three, each partition I want to link to each individual OS and have them sealed off from eachother as well. Is this possible?
Illustration:
disk 1 OS 1 --> disk 2 partition 1.
disk 1 OS 2 --> disk 2 partition 2.
disk 1 OS 3 --> disk 2 partition 3.
Can these 3 systems with their corresponding linked partition on disk 2 be completely sealed off from each other?

I have MDT 2010 setup and am in the process of setting up a 2nd share, I created the share with no issues, and created the "link" without issues as weel. I am now trying to get the linked share to replicate, and am getting an error that the "everything" profile is not valid, when it does exist on the new share. I even tried creating a new profile and setting it to that one, still get the exact same error.

Have one laptop running Windows 7 Build 7100.
And a netbook also running Windows 7 Build 7100.
On the laptop I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
On the netbook I am running Avira anti-virus (although this problem existed when there was no anti-virus program installed).
I created a homegroup on the laptop and shared all folders.
I then joined this homegroup from the netbook (and shared all folders there too).
So under homegroup on either machine, I now see the other computer's name.
If I click on that name it brings up the libraries- documents, music, pictures, videos.
But if I click on any of them, nothing happens. If I right click, then properties it says 'the properties for this item are not available'.
Something seems to be preventing the machines from sharing these files properly.
I have tried looking in Kaspersky but can't see what might be 'untrusted' that I should mark 'trusted'.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Homegroup was the main reason I installed Windows 7 on the netbook!

I recently turned on my laptop for it to constantly arrive to a black screen just before I select the user login. I read some instructions on a different forum stating that I need to log in to the computer via the safe mode and un install my display driver which is Intel(R) HD Graphics, I did this which enabled me to get back onto my original login but at a price.My driver now says that it's VGA, My screen resolution has changed, every app I use crashes constantly as well as any videos/films I play they crash, skip every minute or so.Yet if I update the driver I end up back at square one, the black screen.My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742 with Windows 7.I've also tried the windows recovery which crashes.

I am using kaspersky internet suite and disabled windows firewall. The problem is that turning the windows firewall off turns the pulic/home file/printer sharing and network discovery on.Turning on or off these settings starts the firewall.Disabling the firewall service permanently allows file sharing and network discovery for both public and home network,which cannot be turned off.I tried uninstalling kasperksky but nothing has changed.

I'm trying to gain complete network access between a Windows 7 desktop (Win7 Home Premium SP 1) and a laptop (Win7 Ultimate). I remember back in the old days of XP, all you had to do is enable file sharing, right click on the hard drive or folder you'd like to share, name it, share it and press "okay." The files I'd like to share are on the Desktop computer. When I go to HomeGroup/Advanced Sharing Settings, and make changes, press save, none of the settings actually save. I'm trying to turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and print sharing."Is HomeGroup the only way to share files over a network?

I have just done a fresh re-install of Windows 7 Ultimate on my Dell XPS M1530 laptop. I was trying to connect my PS3 and Laptop together and one of the steps is to turn on network discovery. Every time I try to click on the network discovery and save changes, it automatically goes back to off. I've checked my services that are running in services.msc and it seems that everything is running fine.

I have 2 machines on a router, one is a desktop the other is a laptop.
The desktop can see itself and the laptop under Network, however, the laptop sees itself but NOT the desktop.
Both have network discovery and file and printer sharing enabled for both home and public networks, both can ping eachother, I can use the laptop to access the desktop's FTP even though it doesn't see it on Network, but all in all I can't get its NAME to appear in the Network, so I always have to use its IP.

I am trying to turn on network discovery, but it won't let me. The message just keeps showing up.I think it has to do with the Computer Browser service, which I also can't turn on. It just shuts itself off after 3 seconds.Also, although I'm connected to wifi, it shows a LAN icon with a red X in the tray.

I have Windows 7 - Professional 32 Bit installed on Compaq 420 Machine.I cannot view other computers on network. So i googled and found out that i need to "turn on network discovery", which in my case does not turn on what ever may I do. Next google told me to look for SSDP Discovery service, but this service is missing from my list of services.Next I could fine out that installing "netupnph.inf" in win XP helps, but I don't know which is the equivalent inf file for Windows 7?

I have been having a problem with my home network crashing when using WIndows 7. For some reason, whenever I tried to access shared folders or computers on my home network, windows 7 would show "limited connectivity" and I would lose my internet connection. The crazy thing, is that Windows 7 was somehow causing my router to fail because all of my networked computers lost their connections (wired and wireless) until I reset the router and restarted windows 7.
I recently turned off "network discovery" in my network control panel in WIndows 7, and the problem seems to have stopped. But now I still can't access shared computers, folders, or printers. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
Router: Belkin wireless G router with the latest firmware
Adapter: Realtech integrated into my gigabyte motherboard
Windows 7 build 7100 64bit (Although I've had the same problem with other early Windows 7 builds)

I'm running Windows 7 Professional and it's completely up to date. I use it at home and at work in a domain. Network discovery is enabled but it's not working (not discovering any other pcs or printers on either the home network or in the domain). The only computer that shows up in the network is my computer. If I enter a valid name (\name) in explorer, it opens. I first noticed this when I tried to install the driver for a network printer. It can't find the printer so the installation failed. However, if I try to add the printer from windows and search for it on the network, the printer does show up.

My desktop PC is using 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, and my notebook PC is using 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Both are homegroup members.
The network configuration of the notebook PC appears correct.
The configuration of the desktop PC is flawed - The Network Discovery property is OFF. All attempts to set the property to ON fail.
How do I correct this flaw?

OS : Windows 7 Professional SP1 (x64)
Firewall Software : Windows Firewall
Other protection software : MalwareBytes AntiMalware and Microsoft Security Essentials
I can't seem to turn on my File and Printer Sharing and Network Discovery options from the Network and Sharing Center. I go to the sharing options, and click turn on to both of them. Then after I confirm by pressing save, if I come back they've returned to their previous turned off position.
I tried a few things and have searched online for the last hour or so, but I'm willing to follow directions if someone is more used to this problem than I am. I also searched these forums but sadly the word "on" is one of the main points of this and words shorter than 3 letters are rejected from the search engine, so the results weren't really related.

I have 2 PCs connected to a Win 2003 Ent server domain (not R2 - this is the original 2003 version), although the Domain was originally setup using Win2K My laptop, which connects wirelessly has network discovery turned on and no probs. My desktop (Wkstn1), however, does not allow me to turn on the service. I'm on a domain not homegroup.
Both Win 7 installs were upgrades on Vista Ultimate, and both PCs have pretty much the same software. I'm using ESET Nod32 v4 on both (server has no AV). I was at one time able to turn on Network discovery (share drives and printers on the domain). Now no go.
The server has DHCP and DNS enabled on a static IP, and AD of course. I reserved IPs for the 2 PCs on the network. The gateway is a hardware firewall router (Watchguard) which also has a static IP.
I've tried resetting the Wkstn1 account (and resubmitting credentials) to see if that improves things but no. Group policy updates fine.
Any ideas?

How can I get rid of Network discovery discovering "Non existant" computers - even AFTER a reboot
The computer BIGLAPTOP no longer exists on my network anymore (not even as a logged off or powered off Virtual Machine).
How do I remove it from Network discovery. In any case I shouldn't have to --surely Network Discovery should only be able to find computers STILL attached to the network - so if this mythical machine is still on the network WHERE IS IT.
Sometimes there's a problem of NOT FINDING connected machines but FINDING NON connected machines -- now thats strange. (I'm running newly installed - clean) build 7100 x-64).

So I can't turn on Network Discovery to share files etc via network. I'm on Windows 7.I googled and found one specific solution, which was to make sure several services were set to automatic and started. All but one specific service would not cooperate " FUNCTION DISCOVERY RESOURCE PUBLICATION".Alas, I googled this fix as well, it came up with a dozen suggestions, from creating a new windows account, launching applications via admin privilege, resetting nstat stuff via cmd...even copying over some new keys in the reg, and even editing one called BFE....all failed.I had this same problem on my other laptop, but samsungs running windows 7. I don't know what to do at this point. I've spent about 6 hours googling and attempting fixes.This is the error after attempting to start the service via service.msc "Windows could not start Function Discovery Resource Publication service on Local Computer error 0x80070005: Access is denied"

I'm trying to get Network Discovery to stay on, but it always reverts to off. In trying to activate the UPnP service for this but get the error message 1079..the account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process. This may be what's preventing Network Discover from being activated.
