Network Discovery Still Shows Non Existant Computers
Apr 29, 2009
How can I get rid of Network discovery discovering "Non existant" computers - even AFTER a reboot
The computer BIGLAPTOP no longer exists on my network anymore (not even as a logged off or powered off Virtual Machine).
How do I remove it from Network discovery. In any case I shouldn't have to --surely Network Discovery should only be able to find computers STILL attached to the network - so if this mythical machine is still on the network WHERE IS IT.
Sometimes there's a problem of NOT FINDING connected machines but FINDING NON connected machines -- now thats strange. (I'm running newly installed - clean) build 7100 x-64).

I'm trying to gain complete network access between a Windows 7 desktop (Win7 Home Premium SP 1) and a laptop (Win7 Ultimate). I remember back in the old days of XP, all you had to do is enable file sharing, right click on the hard drive or folder you'd like to share, name it, share it and press "okay." The files I'd like to share are on the Desktop computer. When I go to HomeGroup/Advanced Sharing Settings, and make changes, press save, none of the settings actually save. I'm trying to turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and print sharing."Is HomeGroup the only way to share files over a network?

I have just done a fresh re-install of Windows 7 Ultimate on my Dell XPS M1530 laptop. I was trying to connect my PS3 and Laptop together and one of the steps is to turn on network discovery. Every time I try to click on the network discovery and save changes, it automatically goes back to off. I've checked my services that are running in services.msc and it seems that everything is running fine.

I have 2 machines on a router, one is a desktop the other is a laptop.
The desktop can see itself and the laptop under Network, however, the laptop sees itself but NOT the desktop.
Both have network discovery and file and printer sharing enabled for both home and public networks, both can ping eachother, I can use the laptop to access the desktop's FTP even though it doesn't see it on Network, but all in all I can't get its NAME to appear in the Network, so I always have to use its IP.

I am trying to turn on network discovery, but it won't let me. The message just keeps showing up.I think it has to do with the Computer Browser service, which I also can't turn on. It just shuts itself off after 3 seconds. Also, although I'm connected to wifi, it shows a LAN icon with a red X in the tray.

I have been having a problem with my home network crashing when using WIndows 7. For some reason, whenever I tried to access shared folders or computers on my home network, windows 7 would show "limited connectivity" and I would lose my internet connection. The crazy thing, is that Windows 7 was somehow causing my router to fail because all of my networked computers lost their connections (wired and wireless) until I reset the router and restarted windows 7.
I recently turned off "network discovery" in my network control panel in WIndows 7, and the problem seems to have stopped. But now I still can't access shared computers, folders, or printers. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
Router: Belkin wireless G router with the latest firmware
Adapter: Realtech integrated into my gigabyte motherboard
Windows 7 build 7100 64bit (Although I've had the same problem with other early Windows 7 builds)

I'm running Windows 7 Professional and it's completely up to date. I use it at home and at work in a domain. Network discovery is enabled but it's not working (not discovering any other pcs or printers on either the home network or in the domain). The only computer that shows up in the network is my computer. If I enter a valid name (\name) in explorer, it opens. I first noticed this when I tried to install the driver for a network printer. It can't find the printer so the installation failed. However, if I try to add the printer from windows and search for it on the network, the printer does show up.

My desktop PC is using 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, and my notebook PC is using 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Both are homegroup members.
The network configuration of the notebook PC appears correct.
The configuration of the desktop PC is flawed - The Network Discovery property is OFF. All attempts to set the property to ON fail.
How do I correct this flaw?

OS : Windows 7 Professional SP1 (x64)
Firewall Software : Windows Firewall
Other protection software : MalwareBytes AntiMalware and Microsoft Security Essentials
I can't seem to turn on my File and Printer Sharing and Network Discovery options from the Network and Sharing Center. I go to the sharing options, and click turn on to both of them. Then after I confirm by pressing save, if I come back they've returned to their previous turned off position.
I tried a few things and have searched online for the last hour or so, but I'm willing to follow directions if someone is more used to this problem than I am. I also searched these forums but sadly the word "on" is one of the main points of this and words shorter than 3 letters are rejected from the search engine, so the results weren't really related.

I have 2 PCs connected to a Win 2003 Ent server domain (not R2 - this is the original 2003 version), although the Domain was originally setup using Win2K My laptop, which connects wirelessly has network discovery turned on and no probs. My desktop (Wkstn1), however, does not allow me to turn on the service. I'm on a domain not homegroup.
Both Win 7 installs were upgrades on Vista Ultimate, and both PCs have pretty much the same software. I'm using ESET Nod32 v4 on both (server has no AV). I was at one time able to turn on Network discovery (share drives and printers on the domain). Now no go.
The server has DHCP and DNS enabled on a static IP, and AD of course. I reserved IPs for the 2 PCs on the network. The gateway is a hardware firewall router (Watchguard) which also has a static IP.
I've tried resetting the Wkstn1 account (and resubmitting credentials) to see if that improves things but no. Group policy updates fine.
Any ideas?

On my desktop computer, when I go to Network & Sharing Center and select Change Advanced Sharing Settings, Turn off network discovery and Turn off file and print sharing are both selected. I click on the Turn on options and then click on Save Changes but when I come back to this screen, they're turned off again. I can't print from my (wireless) laptop now.

So I can't turn on Network Discovery to share files etc via network. I'm on Windows 7.I googled and found one specific solution, which was to make sure several services were set to automatic and started. All but one specific service would not cooperate " FUNCTION DISCOVERY RESOURCE PUBLICATION".Alas, I googled this fix as well, it came up with a dozen suggestions, from creating a new windows account, launching applications via admin privilege, resetting nstat stuff via cmd...even copying over some new keys in the reg, and even editing one called BFE....all failed.I had this same problem on my other laptop, but samsungs running windows 7. I don't know what to do at this point. I've spent about 6 hours googling and attempting fixes. This is the error after attempting to start the service via service.msc "Windows could not start Function Discovery Resource Publication service on Local Computer error 0x80070005: Access is denied"

I am using kaspersky internet suite and disabled windows firewall. The problem is that turning the windows firewall off turns the pulic/home file/printer sharing and network discovery on.Turning on or off these settings starts the firewall.Disabling the firewall service permanently allows file sharing and network discovery for both public and home network, which cannot be turned off.I tried uninstalling kasperksky but nothing has changed.

Unable to see home network computers in Windows Explorer Network screen.
I have a home network with 2 laptops and 1 desktop. The desktop I use as a "file server" in that all work done on the laptops is stored to the desktop. The desktop computer name is HAL. One laptop is fine and sees the network. The other just stopped seeing it; rebooted the laptop; rebooted HAL; did a number of refreshes without any luck. I opened EXCEL and found a worksheet that was listed that I knew was saved on HAL. Was able to open the file and when I tried the SAVE AS I could navigate through all of HAL just as normal. Went to Windows Explorer and still no HAL listed as a COMPUTER on the NETWORK. I have a internet connection so I know I am making it to the router at least. And when I check NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER it shows an active home network. The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 Build 7601.

I just need to rename the laptop!Woo, that's all fine and dandy, except when I renamed my laptop from Ken-PC (the name shared by both laptop and desktop) to KenLaptop and rebooted, there was a whole slew of problems caused by the namechange. Very long story somewhat shortened, it looked like I was booting up win 95.Multiple error screens, very retro GUI, all fixed by renaming my laptop Ken-PC again.I'm just trying to be able to share my files between the two computers!

Suddenly, Windows 7 will only see one of the 4 other machines on my network. It was working fine a few days ago. I have tried uninstalling Comodo and everything else I can think of - same result. All other machines show all 4 other machines on the network.
My Windows 7 machine only shows one other machine, which is a Vista notebook. The other 3 machines that don't show up are another Vista notebook and 2 XP desktops. All machines can see the Windows 7 box and even print through it. What is going on? Why would one machine show up but not others??

I am wondering if I am missing something here, I have to my knowledge turned off all media streaming capability but yet when I am listening to tunes in the office I have noticed that there is an icon for my office pc's media player on the network. I have turned off the functionality in advanced sharing and it is not turned on in wmp. Is this just the way it is now? Seems like this should be able to be overridden, virtually every guest in my house has access to my htpc and I don't necessarily want them to have access to my office pc's media.

So, I know this topic has been covered many many times, but this is slightly different.
I had all the computers on the network, a mix of XP SP3, vista and 7 pro of the 32 and b4bit flavors networked and working fine. All of a sudden, i can no longer see the xp computers from the Windows 7, and vice versa. So i thought maybe there was an update that changed the node type (it's happened before on a Windows 7 home comp in the network). All the nodes are hybrid, all still have file sharing and network discovery enabled and my LAN manager is still set to send lm&ntlm.
What's strange is that I can type in the computer name into the address bar and access it fine. But they won't show up on the network map. So, while for a techies like us, who runs IT knows how the users like to have everything the way it was...how to get all the computers back on the network map.

I have 2 computers, 1 a old desktop running on-board lan using a wired connection to my router. my laptop using wireless connection to my router. Router is a linksys wrt110. Ive had the problem for years and it wasn't much of a issue. The desktop orginally ran Vista x64 and my other computer ran XP so i just figured it was a problem between the two OS, But now both systems run 7 and now i still have the same problem.
The problem is initally this: My desktop can access my laptop but my laptop cannot access my desktop. Ive triple checked all network setting, made sure all sharing options are checked, made sure im in the same workgroup. But when I try to access my desktop via my laptop i get "Windows cannot access \0320-pc" "You do not have permission to access \0320-PC. Contact my network administrator."
