Long Delay Between POST And OS Integration?
Oct 30, 2011
Intel 82801GH I/O Controller Hub (ICH7DH) SATA Controller in IDE mode. Windows 7, SP1, Home Premium, 32 bit. Plextor DVDR PX-L890A ATA Device. HD and CD-ROM both connected to black connectors on Intel D975XBX2 MoBo. BIOS set on default. With CD-ROM connected POST proceeds normally until it gets to "EB" test where it hangs for 2 minutes then proceeds to integrate with the OS. When integration complete, the CD-ROM and OS operate normally. If I disconnect the CD-ROM from the black connector, POST and integration proceed normally and rapidly.

[code] I have Windows 7 64 bit in HDD1 and OS X Lion in HDD 2 that I installed using Hackintosh distro. I press F8 key on POST screen which gives boot drive selection menu from where I select the HDD to boot from. The system was running flawless on both operating systems until recently. The problems are listed below:
- Almost always it takes unusually long for POST screen to appear (around 60 to 90 seconds) whereas during good condition it used to appear within 5 to 10 seconds of power on
- Sometimes the system doesn't receive display signal
- If I take out power cables from all SATA drives but one, then the POST screen usually appears normally for sometime.
- At one time I removed ALL SATA drives, i.e. both HDDs and DVD then turned on, it turned on promptly without delay.
Then I connected Optical drive and turned on, it turned on properly. Then connected the HDDs one by one, and it still turned on without delay. But this lasted only for 2 days after which the same problem, i.e, either POST screen appears after painfully long time or doesn't appear at all. Before this motherboard, I had Intel DG43NB and had both Os X and Win 7 and experienced exactly the same problem and my hardware guy told me that my motherboard had gone down so I replaced with this ASUS one. Again the same problem with this board
- Where is the problem?
- Could the problem possibly be in the motherboard? I think it's unlikely because once the system starts it works flawlessly, i.e. no errors, no crashes, nothing.
- Could it be the power supply? Since it seems to work better with less load, i.e. some drives disconnected.
- Could it be the GPU?
- What's the best way to diagnose?
- Does the problem have anything to do with my frequently switching boot drive from POST startup menu?

This is more of an annoyance but when I initially try to connect to a share on my network it takes about 30 -60 seconds. For example, when I go to \1.1.1.1c$ or even \netbiosnamesharename it will take 30-60 seconds to connect. It will connect and after that everything is fast and reconnecting is quick as well. I can ping the computer with the share during that time. I've tried using the netbios name and the IP. Network is simple, all Gb.

The power went out a few days ago. When I came home, my computer was off, but it's set to turn back on when power is restored (I think 3 attempts max.). I turned it on and everything seemed normal until the "windows is starting" screen (the one with the windows logo on the black screen). I thought the computer froze after sitting there for 5-10 minutes, and I turned it off. I unplugged it for 5 minutes, then turned it back on and ran the repair wizard. It found no problems and I tried starting windows again. After 5 minutes I was going to turn it off again, but I noticed the windows logo was still animated, so I let it sit. After about 20 minutes I heard the startup sound. I came back and windows had loaded. Everything worked normally, as fast as usual, no problems at all. I shut my computer off so I could plug it into the UPS I've had for a while but never got around to connecting. When I tuned it back on, it took 20 minutes to get past the load screen again. I've had it take a couple extra minutes in the past when power was lost, but only the first time I started it back up.

Im running Windows 7 Professional x86 final on this machine:
athlon x2 5.000+
2x2gb ddr800 dual-channel memory
ati radeon hd 4650 512mb 128bits
500g sata hd
The os is updated and all the settings of the os are on default. The settings of videocard are in performance/balanced.
The problem was found in counter-strike 1.6 and Urban Terror 4.1 (its a quake3 mod).
In desktop, without gaming or something else, i see that the mouse has some kind of delay (almost nothing here).
During the gameplay i get lag and slow fps...
I disabled the "DESKTOP COMPOSITION" and the problem was not solved but its better with this crap disabled.
I wanna know if you can tell me if there is some config, drive issue, or something else to make it works without this option disabled.
Im thinking in some option on regedit to make desktop composition stop lagging the opengl games.
Does anybody knows how to solve it without disabling the desktop composition?
I like the face of windows 7 and don't wanna loose it for a game too old.

Can't seem to find anything on the web including ms/technet about selecting certain drives to be used by the vm. The integration options for drives doesn't allow the user to choose which drives. Is it all or nothing?
Is there a way to select certain drives only for use in vm integration?
Would only like for the vm to see & use the host windows 7 drive.

Why is this. Like 10 minutes plus and it still says recycling. It should only take a second. Is it bad to let it continue at its own pace or should I restart the PC and try it again?

I recently installed the XP mode beta for Windows 7, and to me it just seems to be a version of XP tailored for virtualization, which falls quite short of my expectations.
I haven't used it extensively though, so, while I think it's unlikely, is it possible for me to say, install a game controller for Windows XP, then use it with a Windows 7 application?
I would try it, but the controller in question had a rather lengthy install process, and I'd like to know that before I spend all this time to find out something is useless.

After XPMode working flawlessly, it is all of a sudden giving me errors. When I lanuch it, it takes a very long time, the green bar goes all the way till the end where it says "Starting the virtual machine", then it errors out stating, "Could not enable integration features". Nothing was changed. I cant use my XPMode applications either.

I'm having a problem running some programs in XP mode (Windows 7 Ultimate x64). Roxio Creator 2009 gives me a message that 'Remote Desktop is not supported by this application'. Not sure what RD has to do with Roxio but, I looked in Device Manager and have 3 yellow ? (like many others I've read) for Virtual PC Integration Device. I've tried to let XP find the drivers on it's own but it does not. I'm not even sure if this has anything to do with my problems running programs but assume it does.
So, are there drivers available for this Virtual PC device and if so where?
Also, what should I see under Display Driver? My video card is not listed but as I'm not a Virtual PC user, this might be normal.

You know how you can integrate service packs into windows and create an Windows installation disk with service packs included? Can you do the samething with Software programs like Office.....etc.
Is this a programmer thing? I know from my own system I can use a Ghost like program and create an image of my drive. I am not talking about that though. I am talking pure installation with programs pre-loaded on the disk to save time on haveing to install them.
Is there a software program out there that can do this?

Computer posts, then checks hard disk RAID status (Healthy), then a white blinking cursor appears on upper left corner on black screen, and hangs there forever, UNLESS i put in a Windows bootable CD, then based on my boot priority order (CD ROM, HD) it reads the CD, then it displays "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD...", for which i don't press anything, and the computer proceeds to boot Win 7 OS correctly. So basically it doesn't boot unless i just have a bootable CD in tray.

The problem is minor and it's just a bit of an annoyance I've been dealing with from time to time.[CODE]Basically, If I were to I put my computer to sleep(using the sleep function, not hibernate) and try to wake it up within a few seconds, the computer would go into an automatic reboot loop that would continue to boot, shut down, boot, shut down until I turn off the PSU completely. I'm trying to figure out which component might be causing this problem, if any. I've updated my bios, drivers, and ran memtest but nothing seemed out of the ordinary and it didn't fix the problem.

Once I remove the USB drive the system boots as normal. My system also has a USB RF Transceiver for the keyboard and mouse. It causes no problem though just the drive.

I had no problems with the first two computers that I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7, both were 64bit systems. I'm having post upgrade problems from vista to windows 7 with my 32 bit machine (Sony Vaio VGN-NR430E). THe machine did fine with the compability check for Windows 7.
Problems:
1) Some icons on the desktop are not appearing. Instead of the icon, I just have a white icon in it's place.
2) Taskbar icons are either white or blank. If I click on the white or blank icon the application will run, If I hover over the blank or white icon it tells me what application it is.
3) Control panel icons are not present.
4) Start menu icons and folders are white. If I click on them, it just hangs like it is trying to do something and will remain like that until explorer crashes.
Ideas that I tried but did not work:
1) Tried rerunning the Windows 7 upgrade. But when it gets to the compability check, the check just keeps running. eventually I then must cancel out of the upgrade
2) Tried a chkdsk at bootup. No errors, but it did not fix my problem.
3) Tried rebuilding the iconcache. Did not work
4) Tried some other type of scan (sfc /scannow)that was started from the command prompt. it did not work.

For instance, what if you make the perfect image...having it on a disk partiton is so much faster than a usb disk or even a dvd.

First off, I just migrated over to Windows 7 Forums from Vistax64 and am excited.
I'm currently running Vista Home Premium 64-Bit on a Pentium i7 with 6gigs of Ram and a pretty hardcore video card. Plus, the computer is only 4 months old and i am a pretty tidy user with very little on the drive.
SO: I've elected to upgrade instead of clean install. Now, I'm not looking for any responses explaining to me why I'm an idiot for upgrading instead of doing a clean install because I'm not. I am aware of the drawbacks and I'm ok with them, though they form the backdrop to my question in this post.
There have been a lot of posts about why you should go for a clean install. I hope this post about upgrading gets some intelligent attention, too.
Here's my question: what steps can I (and other upgrading users) take post-upgrade to minimize the "dust" from my (our) old vista OS? For example, a good registry cleaning seems like a good place to start. But what else?
