Lines Appearing On Screen When Using VGA But Not When Using HDMI?
Feb 6, 2012
I recently made a thread on this forum talking about how my new PC setup has suddenly started creating lines on my screen
Link: Wavy lines across screen, (usually grey-ish colours) on new setup.
After trying a full list of things; 2 different monitors 2 different VGA cables 3 different mice 3 different keyboards change power supply change graphics card used onboard graphics switched ram sticks and removed one at a time reformatted a dozen of times unplugged all sound from computer checked motherboard for any visual problems and couldn't see any updated all drivers I could possibly think of Ran Memtest for 7 passes with no errors I've finally found out the problem and that was when I connected my graphics card using HDMI to a HDMI compatable monitor it worked fine and I had no more lines!
So it seems that using HDMI is working fine but soon as I use a VGA cable its not working and the lines are back. It only confused me more when I connected a VGA cable from another computer to the monitor it all worked fine.
As far as I can tell it's something to do with my computers VGA/HDMI settings, I've tried onboard VGA and that still didn't work so it doesn't seem to be a graphics card problem just something is stopping VGA working properly but HDMI is working.
I'm gonna have to go buy an expensive new monitor with HDMI compatability.
Recently however there is a white line that is going through the wallpaper. and now add to that a red line. At first i thought it was my moniter but the lines only go through the wallpaper, they dont appear in videos, when im browsing the internet, or when in game. They are only appearing on that wallpaper. I can change the wallpaper and the lines aren't there. If i change back they are there. So i figured that my image might be corrupted so I went online and looked for the same picture again. I found it twice and both times the lines were there on the picture. Not after I downloaded it, as I found the picture online, on the webpage, before redownloading.
HP Laptop running windows 7 every now and again, (not very often) the screen will fill with zigzag lines. Theres nothing else on the screen, i have to reboot the laptop and then it starts up fine. laptop was running Vista and it happened then aswell. It can happen while playing vdeos or just surfing the net.
I have been using my emachines netbook 350 for a year now and running windows7 in it since I bought. A month ago, I've started seeing those blinking horizontal lines on my screen. Almost half of my screen is affected. I wonder if it is a problem with my video card or just some viruses. Well when I print screen, the lines are not showing. The same as when I connect my netbook to a projector
I've had this issue in Build 7100 X86 and X64 and 7600 X64. I've used both the Default Driver and the Driver directly from Intel. I have an Intel Mobile 4 Express graphics card.
Since a couple of weeks, I have a problem with my laptop screen. From time to time, suddenly, everything on the screen disappears and I get a screen with only white and grey lines (see picture attached). When this happens, I can't use the laptop anymore and I have to shutdown by pressing the power button. On some days, I have no problems, on other days, this happens several times.
I have a problem with my computer. I just restarted it, and it ended up booting with purple/blue lines all over the screen.
So the first thing i did was go into device manager. All it told me was a caution symbol next to my NVIDIA geForce 8500 GT. so i downloaded and reinstalled the drivers for it. No effect.
Then i booted into safe mode to find if it was a motherboard issue. The lines remained.
I have a HP Dv series Laptop, It shows horizontal white lines and the lines gradually increased and now a unable to see the screen even to enter log in password.
I don't have the model on me now, but recently I worked on a Compaq Desktop computer. At random times (could be any program open), it would go to a grey screen with weird horizontal lines. I upgraded the video drivers, ran a video stress test and it went over 2 hours with no problems.
The customer just reported to me that it happened again so I am thinking that maybe it is a faulty motherboard (video built onto motherboard). What do you guys think? I didn't wanna give the customer the run around saying "Let's try 1) putting in a new video card then 2) lets try reformatting and lastly 3) lets replace the motherboard)"
I built up a PC a couple of months ago. It has an ok spec, Phenom II 550 x2, NVidia GTX 250, 4b ram, 500gig HD, 620w PSU. Windows 7 Eval. 7100.
From the first couple of days I noticed an issue that looked like incorrectly setup refresh rates - there are wavy lines accross the entire screen, and is particularly noticeable on highlighted text and the side edges of windows. I made sure the frame rate was correct, both in Windows and according to the GFX Card. I have tried all the settings but have settled at 75hz. This is the best setting but does not get rid of the problem.
I have the most up to date drivers for my GFX Card and Windows 7 is up to date too.
The intensity of the problem can fluctuate. Right now, its fairly minimal and only visable if you are looking. It can however get to the point where its becoming hard to read text, or at least tiring because you have to strain some more. This can happen at any time. The only link I have found is to games, as both World of Warcraft and Borderlands will intensify the isse, both ingame and in Windows. I am fairly sure they are set at the correct resolution and refresh rate where possible.
What could this be?
Further info, three weeks ago I turned the PC on in the morning to find the 'power' button unresponsive. After some waiting and several attempts it eventually turned on but I got a 'no signal' display on screen. Later I resorted to jump starting the PC without the power button, using a screwdriver to connect the prongs - after doing this, the power button has been fine although it took another day for the no signal message to go away and normal viewing return. This problem has not repeated since.
During this the fans were fluctuating a lot, audibly so. This dissapeared mostly along with the above problems, but I still think it sounds like the fans are fluctuating infrequently, particularly on initial bootup. I have no software for changing fan speeds, as far as they know they run at the speed I set physically.
A lot of this seems to point at the GFX Card, although I am a little more inclined to think it is the power supply, or the availability of power for each unit. But I really don't know. Either I can find the solution online or I take it to the shop and pay for a repair, not that its easy to even tell them what they need to repair.
The PC runs fast and with relatively few crashes besides that one weekend and this persistant display problem.
ok almost 2 months ago my computer blinked came back on and said a display driver had crashed ans was succsesfully recovered, well from then on out my screen was weird looking with lines ,text would dissapear ,and it was like this for a long time,so the other day my screen blinked and when it came back on my whole screen was multi colored and i could not see my desktop at all, now i read that it was probably just my video card going out so i uninstalled it thinking that .and it did,,for about 10 minutes and it did it again..i know i dont want to hear windows registery error cause i have alot on my comp that i would have to have saved and i shiver at the thought of the price of that...i mean i cannot see anything at all just alot of colors in small thin lines,.this is a home built comp, but it was made by someone who has been makeing comps for years so he knows what he is doing...
horizontal faint lines when in full screen games. using d3doverider(bundled with rivatuner) calms it alot and makes it dissapear in alot of games. I upgraded from my 5870 which was fine to my new ATI 6990. tested it on several screens and it makes no difference. So V-Sync and triple buffer has a positive effect on calming it. Often have to force it with third party softwarerar a milder version of this that is harder to see.i'm convinced it's to do with the graphics card being too fast or ''too good' for the screen and the image somehow can't keep up which causes the lines. was thinking about getting a 100hz refresh rate. The Card is brand new and works(with lines ) anyone know any work arounds like other cables that work like
When I was using the computer just now, the screen just randomly blanked out and showed grey lines instead! I couldn't do anything with the machine, so I switched it off at the wall and restarted it. After a few minutes, the same thing happened again!
I changed the monitor for a spare one, and after about 20 minutes, the same thing happened!
My graphics card is brand new, so it shouldn't be that!
i am having an issue with media center through my Xbox 360 i am using a VGA cable to my Xbox and running it through a monitor everything is fine when i'm playing games and what not but when i open media center it has weird lines across the screen i have tried everything i can think of, i changed the resolution and it didn't have lines but obviously the picture wasn't quite right, change the resolution back to normal and the lines come back.
I am starting QTP application from my laptop. I can see the application successfully geeting the license details, then i couldn't see the application in my screen. When i checked the Task Manager-> Processes, i can see QTP is running. I have killed and tried again, same output. The application icon is not even visible in the taskbar aswell. I have tried using the multiple screen options aswell
When I boot up my computer, it displays the animated windows7 logo as normal, but where it would normally display the login screen all I get is a blank screen with the mouse cursor. I've tried all keyboard shortcuts and random clicks to no avail - it stays on that screen for hours with occasional HDD activity.I've tried booting in safe mode only to encounter exactly the same problem, and have no previous restore points (which I know is a big mistake).Due to it not starting in safe mode either, I tried to replace the winlogon.exe file from another Windows 7 instillation to no avail - I still get the same problem.I am able to boot into linux (off my removable HDD) and windows XP (from my secondary internal HDD), so I am led to believe it is a corrupted file or dodgy setting within Windows 7 rather than a hardware fault.
Computer will turn on and go through the motions of start up, but when the log in screen should come up it black screens on me. It doesn't shut off though...? Just goes black. So beyond that I can't even get in to tell you what is wrong and I can't get the pop up back that said what the problem was.
My mom has a Compaq laptop. It has Windows 7. Yesterday, the screen randomly turned a blue-ish green color. The Google Chrome new tab page is where she first noticed. It's pretty much wherever there should be white, there's that funny color. When I restart it, the white Compaq "Q" logo is green instead of white. The "Starting Windows" text is green and the light inside of the Windows logo is green also.
Is there any way I can force my wallpapers defined in my theme to appear at the login screen and when I lock my computer (Window key + L)? Also note that the wallpapers should cycle through their normal sequence and time at the login screen.
I have 'Acer Aspire 5755 model' laptop.Initially when I increase sound by Hot keys such as 'Fn+Up arrow' etc. system sound get increased with the sound icon on screen. However since some days, when i am trying to use these Hot key combination it is working properly but the corresponding symbol is not appearing on the screen. The problem is same for all other hot key combinations.
I restarted my computer due to running slowly, when it was starting back up, it prompted me to either "Run Startup Repair - recommended" or "Start Windows Normally." When opting the latter, the screen would go black, then go back to the same prompt. When selecting the startup repair, the screen goes to a blue screen with squiggly white lines with a hummingbird and a branch on it (wtf?!) and stays there for a long, long time.
suddenly the grey lines engulfed 2-3rd of the screen of my laptop.. I had replaced replaced window vista with window 7 .Now i dnt know how to cope up this problem.
I turned on my PC earlier on today and there was a white bars/lines on the screen throughout the bootup process. I'm unable to boot into windows as it hangs and goes into black screen after loading past the windows logo, however I'm able to boot into safe mode but still having the screen filled with white lines. I've tried system restore to no avail. I'm thinking its either the graphics card or the monitor.
i am using windows 7 ultimate 32 bit, and when i install windows xp to install some software that is not compatible with windows 7, after i finish installing xp., the boot screen not showing options either ro boot windows 7 or xp, it just goes booting windows xp
On several occasions now I've had a red-checkered design appear on my screen, either on the top & bottom borders of the screen, or covering the screen entirely. I took the opportunity to take a screenshot on the last occurrence but the image only captured fragments of what I could actually see. ImageShack - Online Photo and Video Hosting Why is it occurring? How can I stop it?
