Intermittent But Frequent Crash Coming Out Of Standby?

May 30, 2012

My old Lenovo laptop has recently (2 months?) begun crashing frequently after lifting the lid, i.e.bringing it out of sleep/standby mode. I haven't installed any new software or drivers besides normal Windows updates. I sometimes get a blue screen, but more often Windows just restarts. When I do get a BSOD, it is a weird split screen, with the same information in 2 columns, with the left hand side unreadable and the right hand side barely so. It has been this way since I installed Windows 7 and is not necessarily related to the current problem. Sometimes the restart attempt will fail and I get either a black screen or a half-white / half-black screen, divided horizontally, and I have to manually restart again I've attached the diagnostic files. There are no recent minidump files and System Restore shows only one available restore point from a couple of days ago (yes, I have been creating them with software installs and whenever else Windows prompts me to). I ran scandsk.exe, no errors.

The laptop is a 5 year old (?) "Vista Ready" Lenovo which originally had XP installed. I installed a retail version of Windows 7 HP32 about two years ago. It has been relatively trouble free until recently. The only device Windows 7 didn't recognize was the SoundMax integrated sound card and I had to use a Vista driver. But I doubt this is the problem as it's been working all this time. All other drivers are current and no option exists to roll back the video, wireless or sound card drivers.

Crash On Standby When Wifi Is Connected - Dell Inspiron 1764

May 4, 2012

My Dell Inspiron 1764 just started crashing every time I put it into standby. Screen will go blank, as expected. But, the HD will continue to spin for about 5 min, then the machine shuts down. It does this most times if I hibernate as well. Here's the catch. If I reboot and don't connect to a wifi network, it will standby and hibernate just fine. Once it's been connected, even if I disconnect after, it will crash in standby. Full disk check Uninstalled and reinstalled all network drivers Replaced the offending files from a good working win 7 machine (see below) Full virus scan in safe mode

Here's the basic info from the minidump:

Windows Resumes From Standby And Goes To Standby Right Away

May 27, 2012

Windows 7 home premium, 64-bit HP Envy 3D laptop with 8GB memory, no custom hardware

I have configured a backup job which wakes up the laptop at midnight, takes a backup and puts laptop into standby again. All this happens with the laptop lid closed. The power scheme is configured to put laptop into standby when lid is closed.

The resume from standby, backup and suspend after backup is controlled by Windows Home Server (2003) console which is installed on the laptop. I had purchased the HP laptop in October of last year and this job used to work just fine. Sometime in March of this year, the backup stopped working.

After checking the logs and physically observing the laptop at midnight, I found that the laptop resumes from standby at the scheduled time but immediately goes into standby if the lid is closed. The backup fails. Windows event logs indicate that laptop lid close action is putting system into standby.

If the lid is open, then the laptop resumes from standby, stays awake, backup proceeds and laptop goes into standby again.

Here are my problems:

a) Why did the backup work for several months and then stopped working?

b) I have other laptops in the house running Windows 7 home premium on variety of hardware (all HP) and they do not have any issue. Even with the lid closed, they resume from standby, do a backup and go into standby again. The power scheme on all these laptops is set to put laptop into standby when lid is closed. I have verified from physically observing the laptops during backup time.

I have checked all the usual suspects like BIOS updates, driver updates, run sfc, completely deleted the Windows Home Server console from laptop and re-installed after deleting all past backups. Is there some setting that I have overlooked?

Windows 7 Explorer.exe Crash/restart/crash?

Jan 21, 2013

I read through a few threads with similar topics but the issues were either not quite the same and/or resolved comparatively easily. I am trying to repair a 1.5 year-old HP Pavilion running Windows 7 Home Premium 64. This machine is used as the main office computer in a small doctor's office. In spite of my warnings, anti-virus software was not installed until it was too lateThere was a major issue about seven months ago that required another company to repairThe problem is explorer.exe will not run. Double-clicking a shortcut on the desktop, clicking the text name of a program from the Start menu, and even in the cmd results in the same response, a dialog box pops up stating windows explorer has stopped working.

windows is checking for a solution to the problem. followed by another box stating windows explorer is restarting. But the requested application never starts. I have run the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win, replaced the hard drive and cloned all data, run numerous registry scans, malware scans and antivirus scans. Initially removing over 1500 virus/malware hits and over 1400 registry errors. But the main problem persists, explorer.exe won't open programs.

New PC Goes 2 Standby Even Though Skype Is On

Oct 13, 2011

i've noticed that when i have utorrent working, because of the constant upload etc. , the pc doesn't go to standby. What i mean by standby is that the pc doesnt do anything, the light in the front is filickering slowly, and the internet connection is off. When i move the mouse, the pc springs to life , followed by the internet connection , and in a few seconds i'm connected to the internet. Needless to say, i believe u understand the flaw with this - skype gets disconnected even though i want it to remain on, and i'm guessing the same would happen with facebook. As much as power saving is indeed, important i want my computer to not go into this mode , at least not while there is a program that requires internet or even chat websites.

Intermittent Startup Failures?

Oct 16, 2011

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) that was on sale at Costco. It arrived on Thursday, October 13. However, from the beginning it doesn't always start up correctly. About 4 times out of 12 it got up to the "Starting Windows..." screen, but the 4 lights don't come together to form the windows logo (that's the startup animation). Each time I did a hard reset, and then it would ask if I wanted to run Startup Repair.First time: I think this was before I even installed any of my own programs. Tried running Startup Repair... which failed to start up, and I reset again.

Second time: Immediately following the first, I decided to run Windows normally without Startup Repair, and it worked.Third time: I decided to try Startup Repair again. It went through this time, and when prompted to try a System Restore I did.Fourth time: ...apparently that didn't work, because it happened again. This one happened when I started it for the first time this morning, 10/16. I noticed that the Seagate Drive was attached when I started it this morning. I did another System Restore.Fifth time: 10/16. Pressed F8 and tried to start with Boot Logging. Not sure if ntbtlog.txt recorded the failure, or only the following time when I tried to boot in safe mode. (Safe Mode did work the one time I tried that)

Does Not Load Some Drivers (intermittent)

Oct 26, 2009

I'm rather new to Windows 7 but I've done my fair share of installing versions of XP and Vista to my machines and I've never run into this issue.

I have a Dell XPS M1330 computer with 3GB ram. I chose to install the 32 version of Windows 7 Pro from Vista Home. Everything, including Aero was confirmed would work when I ran the upgrade advisor. I did a clean installation after backing up all my files and loaded the most current drivers from the Dell website that were applicable to my serial number.

My problem is that when the OS is shut down or restarted PROPERLY, some drivers don't load properly and I'm stuck with a frozen home screen. I definatly know that my trackpad and video drivers aren't loading because the cursor will not move and the screen resorts to the lowest resolution possible.

However, if I do a hard re-boot by pressing and holding the power button, effectively triggering my safe-mode prompts, everything loads properly. It seems VERY strage to me that this would happen - I would expect it to either work or fail - not a combination of both!

I'm just curious if this is something anyone else has come accross - or if I should call Dell and make sure the drivers are current for 7 and try re-installing everything.

Intermittent Performance Since Upgrade To SSD

May 2, 2012

I wanted to hop on the SSD band wagon a few months ago so I grabbed a 64GB SSD down my local store.I'm pleased with the fast boot times and applications like Photoshop (which always used to take 10-15 seconds to open), which now open within a second.I have been having an annoying issue though since the purchase which has got me considering going back to my old drive. I have formatted and reinstalled windows and experienced the issue basically within the first few hours of the format, so i assume its the drive. Below are a few things I experience...

*I will be navigating directories and exploring files when all of a sudden the hour glass will appear and make me wait for 5-10 seconds before allowing me to resume doing what I was doing.
*This happens in all windows applications like firefox (while browsing webpages) or within photoshop while navigating in application menus.
*sometimes the application or windows menu will hang for a couple of seconds.. sometimes 30 seconds !
*I never experience any actual application crashes.. just 'hanging'
*If I ctrl+alt+del .. nothing happens UNTIL the computer decides it wants to 'wake up'.
*If I continue to do things while the computer is hanging, when it 'wakes up'.. it will 'fast forward' many of the actions I did while it was hanging (if that makes sense). It does this Intermittently.. sometimes I have a good hour.. sometimes it can be an issue for a few hours etc.

When I want to use the computer again, I first switch the switcher back to the computer, then press the power button. System Crashing When Trying To Come Out Of Standby

Apr 17, 2011

I am having a serious problem with sleep mode in WIN7. Whenever I put the PC in sleep mode, it will come back on when I hit ESC or move the mouse, but the monitor never comes back on and the PC is crashed. I can't do anything other than cut the power to get it to shut off. My bios is only the same version that came on the CD that came with the board. In the directions, it stated not to update the bios if I am not having problems, and up until I went to try to put it in sleep mode today everything has been running perfect. I have also not updated my ATI Catalyst software either, just still running the same stuff that came on the CD with the GPU.

I guess I figure why mess with success if all was well. My memory shows to be running at 1600 with the voltage at 1.65. I've done a bit of research on the topic, but there's lots of varied opinions on other forums I've seen. This symptom is very problematic and I am nervous about keeping on causing it to occur if I can't get a good handle on what to do first - when it did this I had to try rebooting twice for my machine to finally come alive again (the first reboot was unsuccessful and the monitor never responded similar to the first crash).

My build:
Intel i5 2500k CPU
Asus P8P67 REV 3.0 mobo
XFX Radeon 6850 GPU
CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) SDRAM DDR3 1600

Previously, the computer would go to a 800x600 resolution when i touched it, but I just reformatted, and now it goes to standby mode.

I have NO idea what would cause this. Do you guys have any ideas?

At first I thought Security Essentials is doing some scanning or windows is indexing some files, but this happens every time the computer is idle for longer than 10 minutes. I have a suspicion that my laptop could be part of a bot network.

Computer Won't Wake From Standby / Hibernate

Dec 6, 2011

My computer is several years old, and just a few weeks ago started having a problem waking from standby. Up until now, it had no issues going into and coming out of sleep. Now, whenever it goes to sleep (whether due to inactivity or putting it to sleep manually), it won't wake up. The lights come on, the fans come on, but the monitor stays in standby. I've looked around online and found that many people get a black screen when booting up, i.e. the monitor comes alive and they may get a mouse cursor, but that's not what's happening to me. I don't get a black screen--my screen is never getting a signal from the computer. I have to do a hard reset, after which I get the 'Start Windows Normally' screen.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics drivers, changing hybrid sleep settings, using hibernate instead of standby, uninstalling random programs, etc, to no effect. I don't think I had any major windows or driver updates that caused it.
