I recently won a competition where the prize was Windows 7 Ultimate (full, not upgrade, version). I also just bought a new Dell Studio XPS desktop (please see the specs. in my profile... if you can) which came pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) (OEM version with no disc, of course).I want to (clean) install Windows Ultimate onto the new Dell PC. Will I run into any problems in doing this? I basically also want to get rid of all the Dell crap and 3rd party software that came with the computer, and set it up the way I want it. I have heard that Win 7 will install all my drivers automatically, so would I be right in saying that I do not need the Dell "drivers and utilities" disc that came with the system?The internet is littered with people bitching about how their Dell keeps screwing up or how Windows isn't compatible with this or that, and I'd like to try and avoid becoming one of those people. Basically, I'm just wanting to know if there are any issues in straying from the Dell OEM operating system, and installing my own full retail version of Win 7.
Recently I have been trying to upgrade one of our computers (Dell Dimension 9150/XPS 400) to Windows 7. While this Dell model is old, a brief search on the internet shows that several people have gotten Windows 7 to work on this model just fine, so I'm inclined to believe this should be doable. I have performed multiple clean installs of Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) on this desktop, but inevitably I will eventually start getting a BSOD. The BSOD is kind of a crap shoot; on some installs of Windows 7 it happens occasionally while on others it happens as soon as the desktop loads. The problem gets worse (or more likely to occur) the farther I progress in "setting up" the computer. Here is a general procedure I have been following:
1) Clean install of Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) on hardrive 2) Install all the Windows 7 Updates (the only drivers installed are those recommended via Windows Update as Dell offers none for this computer on Windows 7) 3) Install Microsoft Security Essentials 4) Install Microsoft Office Professional 2010 5) Install Microsoft Updates for Microsoft Office 6) Install other programs I need
One time I got all the way to step 6 and was ready to transfer backed up files to the desktop when I started getting a continual looping of the BSOD...with the most recent install, I only got to step 3 before the first BSOD occurred. I have tried running CHKDSK but that does not find anything nor seem to prevent any problems. I ran a memory test via advanced setup (where you press F8 while the OS boots) and that said something like "Problems were detected...you will need to contact your hardware provider" or something to that effect.
However, no specific information was revealed; perhaps a summary is supposed to come up once you reach your desktop but this was during an install where the BSOD was continually looping so I never could see the desktop for more than a few seconds. Reinstalling the original Windows XP OS doesn't seem to fix the problem; regardless of OS, drivers, or other programs installed, the BSOD inevitably shows up and does not seem tied to a specific update, program, or action.

Lately whenever i try to start my computer it pass the Dell Bios and then directly goes to the screen which states Repair your system or Start windows normally When i chose repair system , it start downloading windows files and then launch the windows , but hung up at the sky blue login window with only movable cusor . When i choose to start windows normally it gives me BSOD momentarly ( hard to see the message) and then restarts again . i tried with the advanced boot up options like repair my computer , all safe modes , restore to last good configuration but it does the same and hangs at windows loging sky blue window .I Tried to run the Dell PSA+ Diagnostic and it returns with 2000-0146 error . As per the Dell online solutions for this type of error ,I tried to reinstall the Hard disk but the problem still exist.
My holiday upgrades have started and I upgraded a Dell Inspiron 1420 today, it was a good experience, however there were some very important drivers missing in the out of the box process that were easy enough to fix so I wanted to share the details for those who might not find this so obvious because you have a machine that works GREAT with Windows 7! First, verify what sound device and video device you have before you start this process it will provide some confidence in the steps here. The Dell Inspiron 1420 Im referring to had a SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio processor and a NVidia GeForce 8400GS Graphics processor. Windows 7 doesnt seem to know this hardware is part of the machine and so the drivers are completely missing, instead there is generic audio driver (enables the headphone jacks, but not the built-in speakers) and a generic VGA graphics adapter driver provided (that provides full resolution but no Aero support).

I will have 2GB of this RAM Thursday with another 2GB of the same RAM the following week or the week after that. Corsair Dominator DDR2 Ram Memory PC-6400 800 MHZ [URL] After the RAM I will be getting a new Graphics Card. Also I have a spare 650 watt PSU if needed.
I ran the Window upgrade advisor and the only things it flagged was (of course) that I only had 512MB of RAM and outlook express. It did say custom installation required, whatever that means.
1. My first question to everyone is, can my Dell even run Windows 7 64-bit? I googled around and it seems possible.
2. My second question is can I install it with the 512MB of RAM I have now?
3. My last question is can I install this along side XP on my HD?
4. My third question is does anyone know of a good very detailed step by step Noob guide for installing it next to XP?
I have never installed an OS before and if it does not work I am screwed!
I do know it is better to do a fresh install and no I cannot by another HD right now, I know they are cheap but I will be scraping together all I have just for the RAM and Graphics card.
My problem is that, I really only have the time to do this over the long weekend and cannot wait for the RAM to get here. The guy on e-bay is a clown and did not ship it when he was supposed to and it will not be here in time.
I just need it up and running and can add the RAM as it comes but I am under a serious time constraint and if I don't get this done now over the Memorial day weekend it will be a long time before I have enough time to do this.
I just install fresh new window 7 on my dell ispiron 1420, but then no sound come out from my laptop.Before this I use window XP.I already install the sound device for my laptop but, error message comes out saying no sound device installed or maybe it's used by other application.
Dell Studio 1535 I've successfully installed Windows 7 on a clients laptop, the thing is the touchpad won't scroll anymore after having installed Windows 7.I have all the drivers and everything, even the driver for the touchpad.I just can't figure out to set/configure the touchpad to scroll again.
Note: The touchpad itself does work, but it just won't scroll.
After installing windows 7 x64 SP1 (Service pack only), System properties box/window won't open. As usual I right click on "Computer" - select "Properties" but nothing happens. There is a "Properties" option in right click menu, but it doesn't open anything.
There are other options I can not change like some Taskbar Properties options, I can install but when I click on Controll Panel -unisntall a program - nothing happens..... It looks like my Administrator account is kind of "limited". I double checked and it IS a Admin account.
Then I enabled Hiden Adminstrator account using windows 7 DVD Command Prompt. Still have exactly the same proplems as with my account.

Currently I am using 1 500GB SATA on a Win7 64 Pro system.
I am attempting to install/add a SSD. The BIOS does see the drive. But after the BIOS gets done with its check, Windows never loads.
Attempting to use F8 or F5 does not seem to do anything. Disconnected the SSD, and reboot, and Windows boots fine. How do I get Windows to load while having the SSD connected?
I have Win XP on my system and thought it might be time to upgrade to Win7 64. I don't want Win8 and heard Microsoft will stop serving XP soon.My question. I have a 2nd hard drive [1 TB] I keep my files on so I can reinstall the OS on the 1st HD easily. When I install Win7 on the 1st HD, will I be able to plug my 2nd HD back up with no problems, or will it need to be reformatted somehow? There are no programs on it, just files.
I just bought a new laptop. It has one hard drive (C/)with 600gb and I partitioned it. However Im not sure if i did this correctly. I had to provide a file path etc and the only place to save the partition (E/)was on the primary C drive itself. (So now theres a file on the C drive called "E" with its own amount of memory).
I made the new partion into a primary drive and it shows up as such on "my computer". The current OS is windows 7 home premium but now I want to install windows 7 ultimate. I realise that Ive done things kinda back to front - my question is: if i install the new windows 7 ultimate OS, will the partition remain as it is or will it be ereased because its located on the C drive?
I don't play many games on my computer, but occassionally I enjoy (or used to) playing Bejeweled or specifically Jewel Quest. I purchased the latest Jewel Quest game from Best Buy and it said it was compatible with Windows 7, and in fact in installed fine. When I attempted to play the game I got a gray screen, then a white screen then a screen that resembled a flat with red, white and green strips and these three screens just kept alternating.
I couldn't stop them; I couldn't Cnt/Alt/Del out of it and I coluldn't get to the start menu to shut down. I turned the computer off manually. Upon restarting, the computer would not go past the "Windows" screen. I did this a number of times, but was never able to get it to reboot normally. I ended up having to boot in Safe Mode, uninstall the game that I had installed and do a recovery reboot to an earlier date (yesterday) in order for my computer to come back up normally.
I had this very same problem when I tried resetting the screen resolution manually to play another game that I had installed. I ended up abandoning the idea. I am guessing that the problem that I am having has to do with the 64bit Operating System as opposed to a 32bit - but if the game says it is compatible with Windows 7 would it not automatically be able to run on a 64 bit Operating System.??? I am not so much concerned with the game as I am with other software that I may want to install in my computer. if there is a patch or a Windows update that I need to install to fix this problem?

After Windows XP was installed, I was unable to find "Windows 7" as a boot option under "Startup and Recovery"... I could only see Windows XP Professional. I went to Disk Management and right clicked on the partition where my Windows 7 OS was under, and chose "Make partition active"... I got a warning system MAY not be able to boot, but I chose to proceed anyways. I tried restarting and got an error "BOOTMGR is missing / Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" ... I tried pressing F11 after restarting to get into "System Recovery" but it would go directly to the error message. I was still be able to access everything else during boot except "System Recovery" such as BIOS, etc.I re-installed Windows XP Professional on the same partition... and was now able to get into the Windows XP Pro OS again. I'm still unable to access "System Recovery" when booting. F11 option is being bypassed and going directly into XP OS. This is my first concern, how do I get "System Recovery" to get working again? It used to work before as I re-installed Windows 7 couple of months ago. I can still see "FACTORY IMAGE" drive in My Computer (could be on a different drive letter than before). And second, how do I boot to my original Windows 7 OS (C-drive seems intact and all Win-7 system files are there)?

I have an Asus 1215n netbook. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. The drive came with the following partitions:
100 GB Windows 7 15 GB Asus Expressgate (a quick-boot minimal OS) 118 GB Empty partition 15 MB (unknown)
I had been using TrueCrypt to encrypt the 100 GB system partition, which required that I enter a password before booting into windows.Other than that I never touched it until now. Today I decided to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate, so after making sure everything I wanted to keep was on the 118 GB partition, I booted into the Windows 7 setup, formatted *only the 100 GB partition* from within the setup, and selected it as the volume to which to install.Upon restarting, the third partition wasn't shown in My Computer. I went to Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management, which shows the following partitions:
I've done these exact steps in the past with similar configurations, and have never had this happen to me before. I can only surmise that this is due to having had a TrueCrypt boot manager, but beyond that I am uncertain. how I might be able to recover this partition?
I'm about to install windows 7 64bit, onto a new system, with 3 hard drives. One for OS and Data. Second one (SSD) will only be used for caching - fast boot. Third one for -printer-pagefile etc. System is ASUS P8Z77-V deluxe, which has UEFI. Do I need MBR partitions or GPT Partitions.

On my system I have an SSD, so I have (Windows Restore) turned off. When I download a program and try to install it, it says creating a Restore Point and sits there for a while. A long while. I have found that I can go into Safe Mode and install things with no problem, fast. Even after it is satisfied with the restore point and says it is installing, it will just sit there and drag on. What can I do to get things to install without Safe Mode?
When Windows7 ships, I will be installing it on my laptop (Dell Latitude D631). This machine currently has Win XP Pro installed on a SATA HDD of 120Gb capacity.
My plan is to remove this disk & put it to one side, and install Windows 7 64bit on a brand new SATA HDD. I have bought a 500Gb WD drive and ideally plan to create 2 partitions - one for Windows, one for my data.
My questions are:
1. Any upfront advice on pitfalls of this approach?
2. Any knowledge (I can't specifically find any data on this, having trawled all sorts of places) of any drive capacity limitation for my Dell laptop - I have heard of 120 or 137 or other Gigabyte sizes as a limit so am now a little concerned that my lovely new 500Gb drive may not be fully usable.
If there's any inherent limitation, what's the way around this? Or will the BIOS 'autodetect' and see all 500Gb or is there something I need to do in BIOS or elsewhere to ensure the whole drive is visible and usable?
3. Finally...can I use the Windows 7 install process to create the 2 or even 3 partitions successfully?
Dell inspiron 580 with core i5-760 @ 2.8ghz and 4gb DDR3 RAM, windows 7 home premium an nvidia geforce 310. My system gets hang at windows logo while starting, while system is shutting down. Have nayone come across about this problem earlier. Is the nvidia Graphic card causing the problem? I have even restored my PC by the problem still the same.
