Install Programs And Application To Other Than C Drive?

Whenever I install any application or a program then I want that app or program to give me the option where I want to install it. Currently, they all are being automatically installed in C drive which I don't want.

I am having a vexing problem possibly relating to the windows 7 system partition.I recently bought a new HP Pavilion dv-7 laptop running x64 windows 7 HE installed a 500GB 5400 RPM hard drive. I installed Fallout 3 at the time and it ran beautifully.Because the notebook had a second drive bay, and I wanted more speed, I purchased a 128 GB Crucial M4 SSD and installed it. Of course, in order to take full advantage of the SSD it was necessary to do a fresh OS install on the new drive. I installed a clean, bloatware-free version Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on the new SSD and ran as a dual boot as I moved files around and got my drivers in order. I then formatted the slower disk drive so as to leave the fresh install of Ultimate as my only OS. In this way, I planned on using the SSD for windows and crucial application data, and to partition for a dual boot with Ubuntu in the near future. The old, larger disk was meant to be used for data such as videos, music, and games.Somehow in this process, however, the 200MB system partition remained on the original hard disk that had housed the factory install of w7he. I did not notice this complication until I tried to reinstall Fallout 3 on the original disk. I need to install the game in the second drive because it is huge and space is at a premium on the SSD. The installer now gives me an error, telling me that it cannot install on the old HD because "it is a system disk". This is distressing because: 1) The data partition on the drive is NOT the system partition, which of course cannot been seen in explorer and 2) I was perfectly able to install the game on the disk when the factory OS was installed there. Anyways, I could really care less about the game. I am worried that this is going to be an ongoing problem with future installs and who knows what else.I am not 100% it is the system partition being on the same drive that is throwing a wrench into the works. I also (perhaps stupidly) chose the drive path as the location of my system restore files when I activated system restore.

Some say the programs/games would run smoother because its in the same drive as Windows. Others say install stuff in another drive and let windows have a whole drive , so that windows can run smoother.

So, I order a new custom computer and want to install my two old hardrives from my current computer. Both hardrives have lots of programs and info on them. The main on has windows 7 32 bit installed plus several programs. The new computer will have windows 7 64bit. Is it possible to install the old hard drive and access all the programs and files on it even though it has an operating system on it? Can I just transfer all those programs and files from the old one and reformat it to free space or is there a way to just remove the operation system and still access the the files and programs?

I am a big fan of user account controls in Vista and Windows 7.
I would like to know how I can stop any and all newly installed programs from being able to change or affect my default programs.
I build and maintain computers and once I have installed and set up a new system I don't want any program to change my default programs. Not even win media player or Internet explorer if they update themselves.
Does that make sense.
I use GOM as the default media player and firefox as the default browser. But sometimes if there is a system update for media player, internet explorer or even iTunes and quicktime these programs sometimes after the update change my default programs.
Once I have finalized my install and set up my preferences how can I lock down the default programs permanently?

So over the past few days it seems that I have lost control of my C drive and all of its contents.I can no longer properly access it, and everything opens in "Read-Only". I can no longer install programs or modify existing programs.According to the security permissions, I have none. Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.

Our office has an old program that we still need to use when upgrading our PC's to Windows 7. The program will run fine if you start a windows virtual PC and install and run it. However, based on the needs of our office, I need to be able to run Windows XP mode and simply have an icon for our users to click to take them to the application. If I install the program in windows XP mode, and then add a shortcut to the file under all users/start menu, a shortcut is placed in the appropriate place on the windows 7 machine and I can copy that shortcut ot the desktop. The program runs fine until you restart the computer. Once you restart the computer and double click the link on the windows 7 desktop to the program running in windows XP mode, it says:
Cannot start virtual application. The application is blocked from running as a virtual application.
I read some other posts saying to put a new shortcut in the all users/start menu folder. This works, but only until our users restart their computer. The next time the computer is up, the problem happens again. This is not an acceptable solution to have to create a new shortcut for each workstation each time the computer is restarted.

I have recently built a new computer and installed Windows 7 on it. At first the operating system could only see 1 of my 1TB hard drives. So I formatted the second to NTFS by using ubuntu live cd. Now my windows system can see the hard drive and I can open it with right mouse click--->open, and can write to it. When I try and double click the drive in My Computer it comes up with a pop up saying E: Application not found. Where I can set the double mouse click to open it?

Shortly after installing a theme (I can not remember as I can't get into the file system) which is as far as I can see a perfectly legitimate theme (recommended by a user from overclock.net) explorer.exe hasn't worked. I installed it, it asked me to restart explorer.exe by pressing the button. I got the error that it could not start. Itrecommended that I restart the computer before all changes take place. I assumed that I had to restart the computer for Explorer.EXE to work. It did not. At startup, the following happened and now does every time I start it up: (A note, sorry for the low quality photo's, I'm letting someone using my DSLR as they're on holidays.)Everything goes seemingly normal in the BIOS.FYI, the debug code on the motherboard is AA so all is fine according to the debug code.Just before Windows logs me in (just after the Windows logo at boot) there is a blacks screen displayed for a significant amount of time. As I have an SSD, it shouldn't be there and it shouldn't take that long.
Before I get to the desktop, the following errors come up:his is what the desktop looks at login. Firstly, there is not start menu - which means no explorer.exe. Secondly, why has this application started up? Nothing else seems to be able to but this application however manages to. Is it because it uses it's own UI? Nothing else seems to startup. Hmm.I press ctrl+alt+delete and the following comes up as usual: I click "start task manager" and the following error comes up then decided to start the computer up in safe mode.Same errors as before: This is what the desktop looks like, no start menu there:I press ctrl+alt+delete and the normal ctrl+alt+delete screen comes up. Same taskmanager error as earlier.I next boot into safe mode with command prompt. This time only this error comes up: (that is, unless I missed the explorer.exe error or I subconsciously clicked the ok button which is a possibility)

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142) Click on OK to terminate the application. The only option is to click ok. I am deathly afraid to turn off my computer because my brother recently did and that caused it to freeze at the blue HP startup screen, but thats another thread. I get this error whenever I launch anything. I can't even open up the task manager. I really need help. I don't currently have a way to back up my stuff either but I am working on it. By the way, I don't know that my brother was having the same error message as i was or if he was having any error messages. I use zone alarm full security suite if that helps at all, I don't know if it deleted a registry file or something.

I am part of a large organization that has a large amount of computers on our domain controller. I have Administrative rights to the computers only, and network access rights on our network. I keep a number of computers up to date, including various 3rd-party programs (i.e. java, flash, etc), and I currently manually remotely connect to each computer and install the updates to the programs from a network share, then run Windows update, select all the critical updates (as well as all the applicable optional updates), then disconnect and move on to the next one. Needless to say, time quickly adds up.

one of my co-workers wants me to get rid of some viruses and install office 2010 home and student on her computer with the key she bought. her computer runs windows 7 64-bit. after backing up her data, i finally ended up doing a factory reinstall from the backup partition. so i downloaded all windows updates and installed antivirus and firewall software. then i downloaded the office 2010 trial and tried to install it. it seems to begin installing without any problems. then a splash screen for powerpoint appears. it says that its "processing" and does that for about 20 minutes and then there is a balloon that pops up saying that office is downloading files. after all that happens, an error message appears that says something like "powerpoint cannot be opened. please try again later or repair this software in the control panel" with no sort of error code. i then tried repairing it from control panel which claims to complete successfully. so i restart and try to install again and the same thing happens all over again. if i try opening word, excel, powerpoint or onenote the splash screen appears and does the same thing that i described powerpoint was doing. ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. i also tried installing the 60 day trial for office 2007 that came preloaded with the computer and then installing office 2010 over it. same thing happened.

I was just wondering if it is possible to reverse engineer a 32-bit application and recompile it as a 64-bit application. If so, would it still function?I don't know if talking about reverse engineering is acceptable in this forum or not. If not, my apologies. Also, I don't exactly know how "legal" it is or if it's against any EULAs.I'm a heavy browser user. I use Firefox Nightly and constantly have several tabs open. I also run several different applications at once and occasionally Skype. I'm CONSTANTLY hitting the 32-bit barrier for RAM (can't remember if it's 3.1, 3.2 or 3.3 GB) and I still have more RAM on my system. I'm thinking the video quality on Skype starts going south when I run low/out on addressable memory since it's a 32-bit application

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been using it for some time without problems, but this morning I was unable to get on the Internet. Yesterday I'd installed an update for ZoneAlarm which I thought was probably the problem, so I uninstalled in and downloaded and installed PC Tools Firewall Plus instead. no my computer will connect to the Internet OK, but whenever I try to open most programs, I get the following error:"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."The only two exceptions I've found are Microsoft Security Essentials and Internet Explorer which both work fine.

My C: drive, Windows 7's dedicated partition was given only 48.8GB of space (from the original configuration), and recently crashed. For Graphic Design school I need Adobe CS5 and Microsoft Office, which are huge space hogs, and I am certain my recent C: crash was because of the lack of space ("in the red" literally), in spite of keeping it free of extraneous junk and defraging. My personal files, Docs, Pictures, etc., were on D: and unaffected. I tried to install Adobe CS5 on my D: drive, and while it gave me a choice of where to install it [D:/Program Files/Adobe -created while installing], it installed on C: anyway (!!), and only folders with data files and shortcuts are shown on D:! I suppose I could enlarge my C: partition if Windows 7 will allow, but it makes no sense to me with a total of 1TB on the hard drive why I cannot install programs on D: and leave C: for just the OS/System files. I haven't tinkered with Regedit since Windows 98, but I gathered from other posts that that was a possible solution- essentially directing installs to D:, but I would need definite values before I tinker. What are my options?

A friend of mine called me over because he was having troubles, and it seems that I cannot run any program (Firefox, avast antivirus, EVERYTHING) and I tried putting malwarebytes on his computer, which I had the install file on my USB drive, it wouldn't open up and install boxes whatsoever. On top of that, I have a Portable Antivirus on my USB drive that is run directly from my USB drive, but double clicking it would not open up anything.I looked at his "Services" and a lot of them are disabled. When I tried to turn on his avast antivirus service, it says access denied. I looked under Computer Management -> Users -> and went to his account, and his account is Enabled.I tried all of these in Safe mode too. There are no odd looking programs and no odd looking startup services or programs under MSCONFIG.I ran AVG rescue disk from a CD on boot and it did not find any viruses.Lastly, I had my computer with me at the time and downloaded a DEFAULT EXE reg file, which supposedly restores the file associations back to normal for .exe files. I ran that but it didn't do anything. He doesn't have his Windows 7 disk anymore, so I can't run a Repair on it.
