I have a new notebook which is an r519. I have no idea how to split the drives and which percentage should be which. I've been sitting here for ages moving the slider then moving it back. The total harddisk capacity is 232.88gb. How should I split this between C and D drives.

I'm building a new rig and the plan is to have two O/S drives one for XP and one for Windows 7. In addition, each drive will host the O/S-specific apps - games on XP, productivity on Windows 7, etc. A third drive will house the user data files.
I have two questions:Since I will be starting from scratch what is the ideal sequence for installing the O/Ses in a dual-boot config? Can Windows 7-64 coexist with XP-32 without having to fiddle with BIOS settings? Okay, come to think of it I have another question: could I add a third O/S drive and have a triple-boot config with Win 98-SE?
I can hear the roars of laughter now but... if you've ever spent sleepless nights playing Panzer General you'll understand why I just can't let go of Win 98. And no, PG won't run in XP's emulation mode. Neither will NFS Porsche Unleashed...
Can find "will my system work?" Can't find ANY recomendations for a person buying a new laptop. Any good links to recommendations for RAM & CPU speed?

I want to upgrade to Windows 7 so I bought Windows 7 from my local store.I entered the disc and did boot from CD. It reached to the page where it shows the disk partition. I deleted the partitions and created new one. However, whenever I create the partition, it creates a primary one and gives me error saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.

The laptop doesn't have a DVD drive (no drive at all) so I've had to stick the installer on a USB stick from disc using a program.The USB boots up fine on the laptop, just like a disc. View 6 Replies View RelatedI've successfully installed several instances of Windows 7 Beta 1 on several virtual machines. However, I am being stymied when attempting to perfrom a "native" install into one of my hard disk partitions in a multiboot configuration. I keep getting the following error message during setup:
"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition".
I have 2 internal hard disks. The first is a SCSI drive housing an instance of XP. It is the "system disk". The second is an IDE drive housing 4 primary partitions. The first holds NTFS data, the second an instance of XP MCE, the third contains VISTA SP1, the forth is the desired destination partition for Windows 7.
When I boot the Windows 7 setup DVD and get to the point of selecting the target partition I get the above error message.
Things I've tried:
1. Formatted the target partition as a Primary (via XP) - fails with above error msg
2. Formatted the target partition as Logical (via Vista) -- fails with above error msg
3. Left the area unformatted and let setup do the formatting - fails with above error msg
4. Installed a test version of Vista in the target partition first and
then tried to run a Windows 7 "Upgrade" from within that copy
of Vista - fails due to a weird bug requesting install of a disk driver
that device manager shows is already happily working.
I've been all over the web trying to find a solution. Many people have experienced this error message when installing Windows 7 in a multiboot situation with multiple drives but I have not found any viable circumventions. One person claimed that pulling the power cord on all hard disks other than the one containing the destination partition worked but I cannot do that since my SCSI is the "system disk" and houses the BCD and Bootmgr required by the VISTA (and Windows 7) partitions on my IDE drive.
This is probably a bug since Vista installs very nicely into the same partition with no problems. Hopefully it will be fixed by the RTM release. However, I would really like to circumvent the bug so I can use Windows 7 natively in the interim.
Recently my SSD failed so I tried installing windows 7 from DVD on my HDD but I always get an error message: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition."I've tried everything I could find here: I gave boot priority to the HDD, I unplugged every other device but nothing seems to work.

Then it asks me to check the setup log, but I don't know how.
Trying to install onto the 2nd partition of a 160 gb drive, split in half. It's disk 0, the first partition is active primary and has XP. The second partition is formatted ntfs primary and when I select it in windows setup, that's when I get the error message. I let windows 7 delete it and create a new partition and formatted it, but when I select it to install windows onto, it give me the above message.
It's a SATA drive running in native IDE mode on an AMD790GX board with a Phenom II X4 940 and 4 GB RAM.
It doesn't seem like it would be a drivers issues, since Windows sees the drive and both partitions, allows me to delete, create and format partitions, just won't let me install onto it. Any ideas?
i just finished partitioning a hdd for the first time. It will be my storage drive (former boot Win7) drive complimenting a Corsair 115GB boot ssd. This is my first build?
f: 500GB for music, movie, pics and docs.
g: 230GB for installed programs and relocated windows folders. (Windows page files and user's folders)
h: the balance is unallocated at this time. Reserved for maybe umbutu/xp,etc.
1. Would it be better to install programs on f:, if so should I shrink it ?
2. Do you think the size of each is adequate?
3. Slould I install the Gpu drivers to the SSD?
4. Is is bad to keep changing and deleting volumes?
5. Should I partition the SSD boot in 2, one for OS 1 for games.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is a fresh Windows 7 install on a 500GB HDD (previously used under XP) In the BIOS the Storage is configured as: Raid. Obviously I have the right raid ICH10R drivers from Asus (they are on a USB drive) Installation starts, Windows sees the disk, I specify the drivers, BUT when I click Next, I get: Setup was unable to create a new system partition. I can delete the partition, create a new one, format it, BUT when I click Next, I get: Setup was unable to create a new system partition. I used Gparted to delete the partition, and tried again - I used Seagate tools to zero the disk (sort of low level format) - If I try to install on a brand new 1TB HDD following the same steps, it installs fine... Both drives are Sata II and I used the same Sata port (only one disk at a time)

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that got a virus on it. I tried to fix the virus but was just not able to and every time I turned the computer on it would get an error message and ask if I wanted to start windows normally, once in a while I would get a BSOD and it would reset itself. I don't remember what the error messages were because I kinda ignored the problem for a couple months and finally got around to saving what I needed and trying to do a reset. Everything went fine when I went into Dells Datasafe Restore. After it wiped the drive and re-installed I got past the Dell screen at startup and on to the windows screen then suddenly got a flash of a BSOD then the computer restarted. I went through the startup repair and got the message Failure while setup is in progress. I've been searching for a solution for a few hours now and I haven't found one. I don't have a recovery disk (I was just trying to use the partition) and I don't have a windows 7 cd. Where do I go from here?

After 8 long years I've finally upgraded my wheezy old pc, and now am drooling to play with this beastly new machine I've just assembled. My system specs should be in my sig below.But after 12 long hours of trying to install windows 7 pro, I'm more kinds of frustrated than there are words for.As in the topic title, I'm up against the "setup cannot find or create a system partition" error. My machine has a single 2 TB Hitachi Sata 3 hard drive, so there is no raid to muck things up, which seems to have been the primary cause of everyone elses troubles with this error. Using my old rig, I partitioned the new drive and transferred all the data from the old drives, leaving the first 75 GB partition empty and waiting for windows 7.
Then "the troubles" began. Research ensued.First thing I tried was to load updated sata 3 drivers from the mobo install disk. No help.Then I tried downloading the latest drivers from Asus and loading them from a flash drive during installation. No dice.Then I tried changing bios settings from Sata to IDE. No dice.Tried all of the above again with minor tweaks. Using the setup tools, I deleted that first partition and tried to make it again but setup gives me the title error.Well, of course I need that partition back so after some more research, I downloaded gparted, booted it up, but the video output is messed up and impossible to read.Then I slept for 6 hours. I woke up, tenacious and desperate, and figured I'd try diskpart (well above my paygrade) to make the first partition active and/or primary. Diskpart won't allow it? I disassembled my new system, plonked the old system back into the case, booted up into winxp off the old hard drive and with Easus partition manager and tried the same thing as with diskpart, but with the same results. No dice.Then, clearly somewhat crazy at this point, I put the new machine back in the case and tried ALL OF THE ABOVE AGAIN. No dice.Upon boot, POST sees the hard drive, but its not detected in bios. I don't know whether this is a hard drive problem, a mobo problem, a configuration problem, or completely normal for my gear. In any case, windows setup lists all the partitions.
I am having a problem with doing a fresh install of Windows 7. It is on a Dell Inspiron 1546 with a 150 GB hard drive. There was an original install but the computer was having issues as some files were corrupted. I used the Windows 7 disc to format the hard drive and booted from CD after restarting.

My school handed out a bunch of software including windows 7. I saved the installer and key on my desktop and pretty much just left it there for two months. Eventually my vista crashed and could have only used mac. After a very short while my mac crashed to. I saved my key on a piece of paper but unfortunately I lost the installer.
This morning I found a iso, burnt it on another computer and popped it in. Everything was fine until I was asked where I want windows to be installed. Due to the fact that I tried to fix vista from dos, my hard drive configuration got messed up. Regardless of that I didn't care because everything was backed up on a external so I tried to format all of my hard drives and then instal windows. I tried to dual boot Fedora 18 with my Windows 7. They are on two different hard drives. Fedora 18 worked but I was unable to boot up Windows 7. Frustrated, I decided to just delete everything from all the hard drives and try to do a clean install of Windows 7 using the USB-DVD Windows tool to make a USB Windows 7 installer. I then got the following error when trying to install Windows onto my hard drive:

I tried unplugging the other hard drives and got the same error. I also went to the command prompt and used Diskpart and did clean all. Still the error shows up. Something that might be useful is that when I did disk list in the command prompt it showed my hard drive but with 0 free space. Not sure if this is useful but the drive I want Windows 7 on is a solid state drive but the one I had Fedora on is a normal hard drive and I had an extra harddrive that I used for storage that is a normal hard drive as well.

It was from Dell Outlet so I couldn't choose the OS. I've been using MCE (XP pro 32-bit) for several years and love it.I'm worried about program and hardware compatibility with Windows 7 x64. I don't use very graphics-heavy apps like CADD, Photoshop, etc. I only plan to do a little video editing with my .avi clips. I also have an older version of Replay AV that I use to record live streaming radio. I don't want to buy a new scanner (Canoscan LiDE 20 - no x64 drivers!) so here are my options:
A-Partition the new 1TB drive for dual boot setup with Windows 7 Home x64 / WinXP Pro (32-bit). I would buy the XP Pro OEM Branded DVD.
B-Install my old 200GB SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200 as a second drive and run XP programs and scanner from that.
C-Buy Win 7 Pro 32-bit OEM Branded discs, remove Windows 7 home x64, and do a complete new install with the new discs, and hope that my XP programs work with XP Mode. (new i5 processor supports virtualization)
Last night after 8 hours of toil, I finally completed a clean install using a usb drive on my asus ux32vd using the brand new SSD drive I had just bought. The reason it took so long was I kept getting this error -> "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition." What I did to finally get it to install was get to the c prompt during the installation and run diskpart and make the integrated 32GB SSD 'offline' and then I selected the SSD and used the 'clean' command and left the SSD unpartitioned and raw. I had read that with SSDs on a clean install you should leave it raw and windows will install on it. And it worked. Now here's problem number 2, which feels worse than problem number 1. After installing everything went swimmingly. I started updating drivers, etc. I got to the point where I needed to do a Windows Update. There were 91 things that needed to be updated/installed. So I ran update with all 91 and that went fine until it went to restart - it wouldn't boot into windows. Instead it kept going into that startup restoration program over and over saying it couldn't fix the problem. I tried to delete the updates manually through cprompt by running dism, but this failed and I figured to hell with the hassle I'll just reinstall Windows since I know how now and then update windows one update at a time. BIG MISTAKE. I tried doing EXACTLY what I had done before - doing diskpart, offlining the integrated SSD, etc - however this time the error isn't going away. It's still saying "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition." I don't get it. I'm doing exactly what I did when I got it to work, but it's not working now. I can only surmise that the system is still recognizing the integrated SSD somehow.
