Here is an image of my desktop. The gadget size is big, the taskbar is big, the close restore minimize button size is big, how should I restore them to default size?

Running windows 7 home premium. The other day I was messing around with printer settings trying to enlarge what I was printing. Now my browser experience has taking a turn for the worse. My font seems out of whack from web page to web page. Giant bold headers on some and overlapping links on others. I am constantly having to use CTRL -or+ to adjust it depending on what I am looking at. Not sure if I accidentally changed a setting that affects my everyday browsing while I was messing with the printer settings.

My machine defaults to 'small' icon size, but I prefer the 'large' one, in just about every case. Instead of needing to manually change the size for each individual folder, is there a way I can set 'large' to be the default for all folders? I couldn't find anything in the control panel and haven't been able to find anything about setting a default size yet.

I know that I can go into the Start Menu and Taskbar Properties menu > Customize > Start menu size and then and increase the number of recent programs to display, however, I really do not like to display recently opened programs (sorry to seem difficult). Is there any way to make the start menu size bigger without displaying recently opened programs?

I tried right click/open with/choose default program on a file of the type for which I want to change the association but get a message saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." The program I want to use for this file appears in the menu that pops up when I click open with but clicking on the program gives me the same message as does Start/Default Items. I am logged in as administrator so surely should have permission to change associations in this way. The machine is a 2 month old HP laptop running windows 7 home premium. Is there another setting I need to change to allow me to do this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just downloaded MS Office 2010. Now, all the office icons - Excel, PowerPoint etc ..... and all the icons in Start menu and my desktop such as Norton 360, iTunes, Quicktime Player, Calculator etc. show up as the Microsoft Word icon.
In other words all the original icons are missing and the only icon I see - for all software programs is Microsoft Word.
I had a virus on my laptop a few weeks ago and I deleted a folder... or something ... but I'm not sure what it was. what I deleted and how I can get it back?
I am having trouble with my start menu closing a second or 2 after I click the start button, then the toolbar and desktop icons quickly flash twice. So I can't get into certain programs or apps.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently ran into frustration trying to save or make new any files in the root C: directory, with Windows7 Home Premium being set by default, of course, to not allow this. I did a cursory skim of some information online about changing these settings, and made some changes a bit hastily. Specifically, for the C: drive I took ownership of every subdirectory and gave my account full permissions under security. Annoyingly, this didn't fix the original issue of saving to that drive (which I no longer care about anyway), and it caused (at least) two new problems. Now my start menu has far fewer listings than it used to have; I imagine some programs were listed in it based on the previous permissions. I tried to do a system recovery, both through the OS and with a recovery disc, and that does not work either. It lists restore points, but after restarting it says that the restore was unable to complete.Can I fix the permissions and ownership of just the restore directory and program components, enough to run one, and revert?Or, failing that, is there a way to undo recent ownership changes made? I poked around in the Event Viewer, but it's not laid out very clearly.It's ok if it's not possible or easy to do it this way; I can grab just my vital files and completely reinstall Windows if it's absolutely necessary, but it seems excessive. I doubt the system restore files are corrupted. More, let's say, confused.Let me know if you need any of the error message codes. Somehow they never seem useful. Screenshots forthcoming.

Having encountered the XP version recently and resolved the issue, I was able to easily remove the virus and associated rootkit. The difference this time was that unhide.exe failed to restore the start>all programs menu shortcuts, although it did manage to restore the folder structure. I read through and followed the instructions of another thread here: [URL]. Which did not resolve the issue. The output given by SystemLook is as follows:

does anyone here know how to set a default folder size, so that every window opened will display my folders the same size? i like the bigger folders and would like to set it for the entire system, instead of having to continually reset it every time i open a new folder.
