I'm able to see my programs, but I can only see the "Computer" link on right in the links section. All the other links are missing (i.e. control panel, help & support, etc). I have attached a picture of how my Start Menu currently looks.

That was fine I have removed the virus from the box no problems, However it managed to corrupt the Start Menu. The Start menu contents is gone never to be seen again, I have checked every where. I believe this sorry excuse for malware has deleted it during the infection. I know other people have had the same issue, here is the latest topic on the subject start menu problem

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been having a Windows 7 issue for a week now. Last week, my desktop computer had the "blue screen of death" and it sort of fixed itself and rebooted, and it seemed to be working again. However, in the past 2 days, everytime I turn on the computer, and then when the desktop pops up, and I click the start menu button, the whole desktop freezes and I can't click anywhere else. I tried going on safe mode and do a system restore, but the choices of time to reset my computer was still after the blue screen of death. It's really frustrating, because I can't turn my computer off properly anymore cause it just freezes, I can't backup my files, because it's frozen, and I can't backup in safe mode.

Notable programs that seems to initiate these freezes are Google Chrome and something as silly as pushing the start menu button and searching for something.

I need to change some file associations. I tried right click/open with/choose default program on a file of the type for which I want to change the association but get a message saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." The program I want to use for this file appears in the menu that pops up when I click open with but clicking on the program gives me the same message as does Start/Default Items. I am logged in as administrator so surely should have permission to change associations in this way. The machine is a 2 month old HP laptop running windows 7 home premium. Is there another setting I need to change to allow me to do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday, the task bar and Start button mysteriously disappeared.I've also found that the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" windowdoesn't come up. There are two places to click on in Control Panelthat should bring up this window, but it doesn't. The Control Panelborder changes color as if something is starting to happen, but thennothing happens, possibly indicating that some program starts to runbut then finds something wrong and exits. I didn't see anythinginteresting in the error logs. The desktop icons appear normally. The problem exists only when logging onto my son's account. When Ilog on as administrator, the task bar and Start button appearnormally. The usual tricks don't work: Ctrl+ESC, or bringing up Task Manager andtrying to rerun explorer.exe. I tried sfc to check for corruptedfiles, but none turned up. I ran an AVG scan and it did find one fileit considered a threat, which it removed, but that didn't solve theproblem.
I found a web site that referred to the registrykeyHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorerwhich has a NoSetTaskbar value that can be used to disable the"Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window. On the administratorlogin, the Explorer subkey is there all right, but doesn't haveNoSetTaskbar. (It does have NoDriveTypeAutoRun.) But when I log ontomy son's account, the Policies key had no subkeys at all. I triedadding an Explorer subkey without adding any values, but this didn'tsolve the problem. I haven't yet tried adding a NoDriveTypeAutoRunvalue, but since this seems to pertain to AutoPlay it didn't seemrelevant to this problem.Any thoughts as to what might be going on or what might fix it?
Here is an image of my desktop. The gadget size is big, the taskbar is big, the close restore minimize button size is big, how should I restore them to default size?
View 1 Replies View Related"extract all" is a standard context menu command in windows XP, Vista and 7. But this command seems to be overriden when one uses PowerDesk, replaced by the PowerDesk Zip/Unzip utility. I would like to have the option of the original windows command back in the context menu, but don't see any way to restore it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought a HP Laptop and am unsatisfied with the battery Life. Under the terms of the retailer, I will not be able to return the laptop if it has been 'used'. The only thing I have done is turn the machine on and set up the user account for first use e.g "Mary" and browse a few websites. Is it possible to restore the laptop to the factory settings as I received it, meaning that if the retailer turns on the laptop he/she will be asked to set up a Windows 7 user account for the laptop and also things such as HP user/laptop registration will be prompted again etc? (So that they get the impression that the laptop has not even been used? The retailers are a major PC and Laptop selling company, would they be able to know if the laptop had been set up and used?
There exists a partition in the hard drive solely for recovery purposes. Providing that the retailer will think that the laptop has never been used, and will be asked to set up a new windows account and asked welcome to your new windows laptop (or whatever that comes up) and the bloatware that comes with the HP laptop is all there, how would I go about restoring it to that 'new laptop' setting?
so i turn off my laptop for the night. I come home from school the next day i turn it on.My laptop freezes, after a while a blue screen flashes and the computer turns off. Then i turn on my laptop again it does the same thing. So i decided to i have to restore my laptop.I press f8 and it brings me to the menu i click on repair your computer then it brings me to the artistic blue screen background but nothing pops up. I know there's supposed to be a box that pops out that gives you some sort of option but it doesn't. All that shows is the mouse cursor (i'm able to move it) and the blue background screen.

I have my Win7 reinstallation disc and Gigabyte Drivers installation disc if that helps.I'll reinstall windows if I have to, but only if it'll reset everything. View 0 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a netbook for use at University. My University recommended and supplied an antivirus software, which prevented my computer from accessing the internet. After phoning the anti virus support, they said it wasn't their problem and after phoning the university, they told me that they needed to restore the computer to factory setting (which I suspected all along)After booting the advanced boot menu on start up, I first tried starting in the last known good configuration, that didn't help, but then it told me to boot with the reset CD in the disk drive. I have the disk, however on my netbook, I don't have a disk drive!
View 9 Replies View RelatedNow, just 3 days ago It started the BSOD issue.I realize that my GPU was the cause of this issue. When playing games or open 3d applications the temp goes 30C to 72C (In 15 seconds) then 82C - 85C constant (in about 30 seconds). Now I've been using MSI afterburner to check my temps and at fulload my GPU will be at 62-72C max temperature but now it's 10C even higher then before. No, I haven't fiddled with the voltage I set the GPU voltage to 1.037v which is the safest (been running this almost 8 months!). The GPU is the GTX 560ti.Is there a way to set the GPU on default settings or reset GPU settings in cmd or other professional way. I have uninstalled the drivers, uninstalling GPU, disabled GPU, disabled PCI-E slot and so on by using device manager and the issue still persist. Yes, I also have clean the GPU perfectly and still the temperature goes up to 82 seconds at 30seconds-45seconds. Yes, I have checked everything is set correctly and so on, I am a PC Tech.
Is the GPU damaged? Yes I have looked at this thread: Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try Mainly, I know its the GPU straight away, I tried checking old drivers, new drivers, another GPU overclocked software such as GPU tweak and EVGA Precision. I am thinking it's the GPU is damaged or the PCI-E is damaged (I have another PCI-E slot on my system and the issue still there). It might be the PCI-E frequency? but it's set to 100 which it meant to be, I just hope is software related because I don't have the money to buy a new card. Did the dump files help?
Windows 7 Professional: I think the shutdown button should have a confirmation prompt with a delay, whether on the Sign on page or the Start menu to allow for recovery when inadvertently clicking it. I know I can create my own shutdown, sleep, etc. but that does not resolve the issue, unless the shutdown buttons are disabled on the sign on page and the Start menu. If that cannot be realized the next solution is to make sure the shutdown button is set to other than shutdown by default(yes, it will not say shutdown then, maybe 'sleep') and shutdown is in the sub-menu instead. 'Lock' is not an option as some had suggested, unless it can be swapped with the 'shutdown'. I now found out they can be swapped... but it is misleading, because I thought the Power Button is the physical button on the hardware... thus when I press it now it will cause a lock?!
