How To Shrink Volume Size Which Contains OS (Windows 7 64bit)
Sep 24, 2011
Started with a 500 gig hard drive, was able to shrink it to half. My goal is a partition size of 100 gb. The entire contents of drive is less than 50 gb. I did away with the page file so as not to cause a problem as a none move able file. No hyber.sys file either. So right now the size of the partition is about 238 gb, but when I try to shrink it further it tells me that it can only be shrank by 7 more megs.

Although there isn't an interface specficially designed for it, you can actually view the progress of a volume shrink operation in Windows 7, and cancel a shrink that is in-progress, using the Disk Defragmenter tool.Volume shrink can take a long time, especially if you have a very full, or fragmented hard drive. Being able to view the shrink progress can be pretty handy!

I just installed a fresh new copy of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit to my newly bought free dos computer yesterday. Later I installed my motherboard drivers, monitor drivers and optical disk drivers. I also installed CC cleaner.
Now I am trying to partition my 500GB Hardisk. The C: drive is around 465GB so I want to reduce C: to 150GB (OS+Programs/Software) and make another D: drive which will have the rest 315GB (Personal files + games).
The problem now is there is a limit in the shrink volume amount. And this limit i quite big. It only lets me reduce the C: drive to 243GB. Here is the Screenshot:
I tried disabling Shadows Copy, Paging File, Hibernation and System Restore but its still the same. I also tried defragging using the default windows defragger but nothing worked.

Windows Disk Management utility has provided Extend / Shrink volume support.I got to knowthat FSCTL_SHRINK_VOLUME ioctl is provided for supporting shrink volume feature.I am interested to know what support is provided by File system driver and otherstorage modules to achieve shrink volume feature.Actually Linux does not have support for online shrink volume. So interested to know what are the support provided by Windows storage stack.

I deleted all shadow copies, first via Disk Cleanup and then via vssadmin, all per your instructions. It didn't help. I then went in and disabled System protection. It didn't help either.Disk manager still says I only have 462756 MB shrink space out of a total of 953867 MB (NTFS), leaving 491111 MB after shrinkage. That's not enough - I need to shrink the C volume to 96 GB, because I want to move to my empty RAID SSD (2 disks/mirror) with 107.13 GB (NTFS). I assume the reason I cannot use Seagate's disk utility to execute the move is that it cannot move from a larger partition to a smaller, but it hasn't actually told me that - it just doesn't follow instructions.)

I have a MSI K9N Platinum mainboard with 2-Gig of ram (chosen so that I can over-clock the board if I choose). I have the NVIDIA 570 Chipset with an AM2 AMD Athlon(tm) processor. I had it set up with a 128-Gig partition that I set up when I had Vista Professional (64-bit) installed. A year ago or so I upgraded to Windows 7 Home which worked out much better (even if the mainboard was pre-Windows 7). I installed a PNY Nvidia 210 video board (but am having some trouble getting the driver to work with Windows 7).
My main harddrive is a Maxtor 500-Gig ATA drive that is partitioned with 128-Gig for the C: drive which was the maximum I could use at the time with Vista Pro. I also have a 1TB SATA drive installed for data storage and another 1TB Seagate USB drive for media storage. There is also another 1TB backup drive (Maxtor) connected to my Fios Router.I am having problems with the 500-Gig ATA C: drive - bad sectors or corrupted data. I've isolated most of the data but can't remove it. I need to keep the computer up and working and have wasted enough time with the bad drive.
I want to use the SATA drive installed on the MSI mainboard. Can you tell me what the largest partition size I can have to install Windows 7 Home (assuming I can remove it from my main hard drive on this machine before or after to allow a new installation). I use the primary drive mostly for program installation although Windows 7 generally places all of the libraries on the same drive as a default. If it won't slow me down, I would like to use as much of the 1TB SATA drive as possible. Is there a maximum partition size that I need if I convert the SATA drive to replace the C: drive or boot drive?

I am trying to find the registry key that will change the desktop icon size to small.
This is mainly for new users, or for the default user. I have workstations that have several people sharing them and need this for everyone.
I have looked in these locations: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags1DesktopIconSize And HKey_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopWindowMetricsShell Icon Size I played with both these settings for myself, and the desktop icons do not change. If I reboot, the first key value goes back to 32, and the second key stays at 96. But my icons never change in size. I am looking for any way to do this in the registry. I could try copying the ntuser.dat but fear I will still have issues with paths, and other defaults that will cause the same problem I had originally.

so i have a blue yeti, and i'm an online animator/voice actor. whenever i record audio on my blue yeti (or any other mic) i record about 4-6 inches from the mic, and turn the gain down enough that the audio doesn't peak as i yell or whatever. this is what you're supposed to do if you don't want your audio levels peaking and making your recording sound horrible and corrupted. however, afterwards, it means i have really quite recordings. not a problem right? now that it's recorded right, i can boost the volume of the entire clip afterwards right? wrong. i'm not an audio expert so i must be missing something. but why in gods name would the audio distort and peak after it's recorded successfully? it's all there, it's all clean audio. if i turn the volume on my speakers all the way up it sounds crystal clear! all i want to do is do that inside the computer so that when i upload it to Internet people don't have to turn their speakers so far up. but if i increase the clips volume in the computer, it distorts! it sounds awful! why?! i tried in sony acid and audacity and they both do the same thing! i can take sound effects, and recordings made by other producers and crank them up nice and loud, but mine just fall apart!

I've been trying for the past two days to re-install windows 7. It would work fine if I had more disk space available which is my problem. I have 74.5GB's available on my laptop, but unable to get more than 3GB clear at a time, and I need about 7GB's to reinstall my windows 7.When I try to shrink the partition, it tells me to run a chkdsk. I've ran chkdsk several times but it always stops at 9% and gives me an error.

I have just run PartedMagic on a new Windows 7 system to shrink C: in order to be able to create an E: (Data) partition. On rebooting, I get the following error message: Windows failed to start.
A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
File: Windowssystem32winload.exe
Status: 0xc0000225
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
As it is a new machine, it was supplied with no system disk and I don't have a Windows 7 Installation Disk to hand. I guess that either the boot sector has been corrupted, the partition table has been corrupted or most likely that the system partition has been moved slightly.
Incidentally, the system is an Acer Aspire 5742 According to PartedMagic, the partitions are now allocated as follows:
unallocated - Size = 1.00 MiB
/dev/sda1 - NTFS - PQSERVICE - Size = 15.00GiB - Used = 12.27GiB - Unused = 2.73 GiB
/dev/sda2 - NTFS - SYSTEM RESERVED - Size = 100 MiB - Used = 33.59 MiB - Unused = 66.41 MiB - boot
unallocated - Size = 7.84 MiB
/dev/sda3 - NTFS - Acer - Size = 488.27 GiB - Used = 27.17 GiB - Unused = 461.11 GiB
/dev/sda4 - unknown - Size = 92.79 GiB
I suspect that the unallocated 7.84 MiB is the cause of the problem and that PartedMagic realigned the "Acer" partition.
I imagine that PQSERVICE contains recovery data of some sort (like Acronis)?

I just received a new keyboard today: Thermaltake Challenger Ultimate. I went from a Logitech G15.
First thing I did was connect the keyboard and install the software that came along on the CD, it probably also installed the correct drivers. First after this did I uninstall the software and drivers from the old Logitech G15. But before that, and now after, the volume buttons on my new keyboard is still not adjusting the volume when I press them.
A speaker-icon like this shows up when I press the volume buttons, so its not that the keys are not working: (ignore the text behind it, its me writing an assignment)

I am running out of space on my system drive (120GB SSD with < 6GB remaining). It happened in only 12 months. I'd like to know where all that space went, which files are using it. So I'm looking for a way to rank files by size regardless of their folder location, largest-to-smallest, ideally without a full scan of the disk if there are internal indexes that have this info.
