View 2 RepliesI am trying to set up a home server with filezilla server. I am following this site's tutorial to help secure the data flow: [URL]. After doing all of this, I get an error saying "Invalid IP address/range/mask".
View 7 Replies View RelatedHave been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / Windows 7 mix) and file / print sharing.
I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.
(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).
The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.
I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".
I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.
It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).
I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.
Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it.
This guy does a great job at this .
Convert your Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Workstation! - Multiboot Installation
Windows 7 VM's run just fine on W2008 server (they should as there is a lot of common code).
one of the netbooks was plugged in to initially power it up, but then hard-shut-down before Windows could run through its initial setup. Now when I boot up the netbook, and it attempts to go through the initial windows setup "Setup is starting services", and then throws an error message: The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.I restart, and the cycle continues. This happens whether I try to boot normally or in safe modeI've got no CD-drive attached to it, so I'm not sure what I can do to break this error cycle.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to install some programs and drivers i get error: 'Setup will only run in administrator mode. setup is aborting.'. I only have one account which has administrator rights. I have already tried to enable and disable UAC, booting in safe mode, run as administrator, enabling original administrator account, adding permissions, taking ownership, changing compability mode and other but nothig is solving my problem. I'm running windows 7 x64 build 7000.

"setup can't continue. restart the computer and restart setup. when prompted try getting the latest updates."
I restarted the PC and restarted the setup and I got the same message. I updated the Mother Board Bios and restarted the setup I got the same message. I have tried both options (get update and no update during the setup). And it didn't work.

i have a 2006 acer laptop that just recently decided not to get onto the internet. it will connect to the network but no internet. i have looked at more forums than i can count but to no avail. i will try to list the problems/symptoms but i am not familiar with programming language and don't know exactly what all the command prompts are suppoed to achieve and the like.-isatap ipv6 adapter is not working (some people say it does'nt matter but???)-ip address starts with 169-ipconfig /release and release6 does not workbecause "an address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint"-ipconfig /flushdns does not work because "function failed during execution"-cannot displaydns because "dns cache is unavailable"-cannot registerdns because "rpc server is unavailable"-checked my services and found some dependant ones that i could not manually start ERROR1075: DNS client service, tcp/ip netbios helper, routing and remote access, internetconnection sharing (ics). all failed to start with the same error code 1075-ERROR 10022- netlogon service-tried "netsh int ip reset" but reset echo request failed. "access denied". i am the admin for this computer. it worked the first time i tried it with no errors. now i get the failed echo message.
-cannot setclassid "as know adapter is in a state permissable for this action"-i saw something about the dhcp-read on one forum that people were having trouble after deleting norton(symantc) programs. i have deleted norton programs and think i got all of them (how to be sure?)-netsh winsock reset successfully-tried regrepair, regseeker, and a few of those "free download" programs that say they will fix your problems after you register/purchase them. i figure if the computer can stop working so easily i can get it to start as easily. maybe that's naivety speaking.-i have scanned my cpu for viruses (naturally) with 3-4 different programs (maybe norton would have found something).clean-thought it might have something to do with the registery since i had a nasty virus everal months ago that i think changed it somehow.-of course my system restore points are dated after this problem occured.-i bought the computer at staples and it did not come with a windows startup disc.
i can't think of any more though i know i've tried more than is listed. the dns and rpc servers seem to be the main coulprits but how do i fix that? also possibly the norton issue? i've read so many forums i'm seeing triple and everyone seems to suggest the same things. i've tried them so many times (to no avail). i've even changed the network adapters ipv6 and ipv4 adresses to 208.67.222.222 with the alternate. nothing. there has to be something i'm overlooking but what
some of my site was block, how can i see it

For some reason I can't connect to the internet from my Windows 7 machine, however I can connect fine from the VM which runs on top of it? My wife primarily uses the VM so I'm not sure exactly when this stopped working, it used to work fine. When running the troubleshooting tool it tells me the Firewall may be preventing the program from running, so I turned the firewall off but that didn't change anything. A second problem the tool indicates is that "Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)". I have tried releasing and renewing my ipconfig, also to no avail.

Ok, after 4 days of research and much head scratching, I will enter the fray. I think that my problem is in my router after reading everything I can find on the net. I'm getting the error ' DNS server not responding' but have followed suggestions from this site and others to resolve the problem. I ran into a problem with my router, and had to do a hard reset to factory defaults. After I had restored info provided by my ISP for settings required by them, I have network connectivity and I have Internet, but the two will not connect. I can ping my router from the network, but cannot connect to the Internet. I know just enough about networking to be dangerous to my self. Unfortunately for me this is my business network, and it is vital that i have internet.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having problems connecting with the internet on my PC. I have a Linksys WRTP54G router and am running two computers (desktop, laptop) on wirless G and an Xbox 360 wired.
I flashed the firmware on the router and this seems to have cause problems, but the new firmware is way better for VOIP and has improved the wired connection.
Weird thing is, my laptop with the integrated wirless card connects to the internet and network without a hiccup.
The desktop keeps connecting to the network, but has no internet connection. The diagnostic says the DNS server isn't responding. Both those fields for IPV4 are set to obtain automatically, the same as my laptop. IPV6 is not being used for any of the computers.
The only difference I see between the setups are that my desktop uses a USB wireless card. For some reason when I connection to my network which is called "connection" with the desk top it shows up as "connection 2".
I have tried re-installing the USB adaptor, I have manually given IP address and the DNS servers. None of it works, keep getting "The DNS Server isn't Responding".
I'm having trouble with my server - whenever I try to copy a file from an external hard drive to a folder in my network server, a window pops up saying the space is full. However, I know that there should be space. The server holds about 1 TB of data and there is currently only 200 GB or so. Furthermore, I have recently deleted about 700 GB of data so there should be space. No matter how much I delete, the window keeps popping up.

Just installed my first Windows 7 PC. It is the 64 bit ver. Works like a charm, very impressive BUT.I cannot get it to attach to our DOMAIN. It does NOT see the server. We have a windows 2003 server. 5 PCs are attached to it through a hub. Internet is through a cable router which is attached to the hub. The cable router acts as a DHCP server, and the new Windows 7 machine has an IP address within the scope. All 5 of the PCs are Win XP and have no problem attaching to the domain and the server can be seen simply by Opening Explorer then going to My Network Places. The Windows 7 PC found the Internet immediately and there is no problem surfing the web.On the Windows 7 machine it was defaulted to Home Network. When I try to change it to a DOMAIN, no matter what I do it comes back with "The Network Path was not found".I also use the wizard which tries to connect to the domain through different means
and while it does come up for username and password it still rejects it in the end the same errors as above.
I also have tried all of this both with the firewall enabled and disabled. At present I have the firewall fully disabled. I've tried everything....used the workstation username, the administrator name....all the same results. Now here's the weird part, if I fiddle around enough in the network discovery window for whatever reason after a while suddenly the server and the other XP computers appear on the network. I have not been able to find out what it was that I was doing that click this or if for some reason there's something that just triggered it.However once this happens if I reboot the computer it goes back to the way it was and I have to go through this all over again clicking things and refreshing in the network window until suddenly it starts again and then I can use the network all until it might disappear at some other point.Still even when the network can be seen and the server can be seen I still cannot change from workgroup to domain.
I can ping the server by the IP number and the server name.I can paying an XP workstation by its name or IP address but only if I turn the xp workstation firewall off.Reading on some of the other forms somebody suggested to turn off the network adapter Internet protocol version 6 under the adapter properties. I did this but it didn't really have any effect that I could tell. However one thing that seem to make it easier for me to see the network was by going into the IP version 4 properties and clicking on the "use the following DNS server address" and inserting the server's IP address. I also went into the advanced settings to the DNS and insert it again the server's IP address also added under DNS suffix for this connection the name of the domain.I am completely out of ideas at this point I do not understand why I can't change to a domain name, nor why I cannot see the server without a lot of clicking and hitting the keyboard.
I did not really know where to put this so I went with network. I am using an old laptop in my attic as a little server, running a teamspeak server. I want to also make this computer run a forum of some sort. The laptop is kept thoroughly cool so I am not worried about that, currently the laptop is running windows 7 and hosting the teamspeak server without a problem. I wanted to ask if I were to put the forums on the laptop and get it to host them as well would it be better for me to install a copy of Windows server 2008 on the machine? I did not know if this would help or hinder the matter as obviously I want the forums and teamspeak to run as well as possible. If I were to goto windows server would the normal drivers work? The spec of the laptop is a Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz with 4GB RAM and 250GB HDD and the internet connection is good enough that it should not be affected by the internet speeds.
