Feb 18, 2011Yet I can get on the internet. So what does this message mean? I know what the DNS server does-resolves names and IP addresses, etc.

Oct 16, 2009Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / Windows 7 mix) and file / print sharing.
I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.
(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).
The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.
I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".
I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.
It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).
I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.
Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it.

Windows 7 VM's run just fine on W2008 server (they should as there is a lot of common code).
Missing Dns Server, Missing Rpc Server No Internet?
Jul 16, 2012i have a 2006 acer laptop that just recently decided not to get onto the internet. it will connect to the network but no internet. i have looked at more forums than i can count but to no avail. i will try to list the problems/symptoms but i am not familiar with programming language and don't know exactly what all the command prompts are suppoed to achieve and the like.-isatap ipv6 adapter is not working (some people say it does'nt matter but???)-ip address starts with 169-ipconfig /release and release6 does not workbecause "an address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint"-ipconfig /flushdns does not work because "function failed during execution"-cannot displaydns because "dns cache is unavailable"-cannot registerdns because "rpc server is unavailable"-checked my services and found some dependant ones that i could not manually start ERROR1075: DNS client service, tcp/ip netbios helper, routing and remote access, internetconnection sharing (ics). all failed to start with the same error code 1075-ERROR 10022- netlogon service-tried "netsh int ip reset" but reset echo request failed. "access denied". i am the admin for this computer. it worked the first time i tried it with no errors. now i get the failed echo message.
-cannot setclassid "as know adapter is in a state permissable for this action"-i saw something about the dhcp-read on one forum that people were having trouble after deleting norton(symantc) programs. i have deleted norton programs and think i got all of them (how to be sure?)-netsh winsock reset successfully-tried regrepair, regseeker, and a few of those "free download" programs that say they will fix your problems after you register/purchase them. i figure if the computer can stop working so easily i can get it to start as easily. maybe that's naivety speaking.-i have scanned my cpu for viruses (naturally) with 3-4 different programs (maybe norton would have found something).clean-thought it might have something to do with the registery since i had a nasty virus everal months ago that i think changed it somehow.-of course my system restore points are dated after this problem occured.-i bought the computer at staples and it did not come with a windows startup disc.
i can't think of any more though i know i've tried more than is listed. the dns and rpc servers seem to be the main coulprits but how do i fix that? also possibly the norton issue? i've read so many forums i'm seeing triple and everyone seems to suggest the same things. i've tried them so many times (to no avail). i've even changed the network adapters ipv6 and ipv4 adresses to 208.67.222.222 with the alternate. nothing. there has to be something i'm overlooking but what

Jan 26, 2012I am using Micromax 300c EVDO modem ( Datacard ) for wireless broadband connection. In one machine having Intel 915 Chipset motherboard, it is working fine. In the device manager, in the modem category, it shows correctly as " CDMA 2000 Rev A Modem ". In another machine, having Intel DG41TY motherboard, the device manager does not show modem. Only in other devices category, shows as Data services. ( in ports category both diagnostic and service ports are shown correctly)

It does Function Opens CD etc but when i try to burn i get an error.i did use a Windows 7 Trouble shooter and i said i could not burn with the drive i was then told that the Drive did not have Burning Capabilities.I Have Burn a CD In Win XP before i upgraded to Windows 7 i dont know why Windows 7 is not detecting it and only classes it as CDROM.

No Battery Is Detected
Jul 5, 2011So I just moved to a new school which uses ACER TRAVELMATE 6293 as their laptops. When they first gave it to me they put a brand new battery in it and they gave me the wrong charger, greeeat, but I went back and got the correct one.Now, the laptop DOES charge. When I turn it on, it displays the battery icon with the charging icon over it if that makes sense, however it has a red cross over it and if you hover over that it says "no battery is detected". So you have no idea how long it has left to charge and so on. BUT if you take out the charger, the laptop will not turn on (as if the battery is flat, but surely it cant be because it has charged for 24 hrs.)Usually, I would just go to the IT guys/girls at school but seeing as they keep stuffing up and it is school holidays, I am hoping you kind and smart people have a solution. I have tried to get any dust out of the charger port/hole thing. And have also taken out and re-inserted the battery twice. This is driving me a bit stupid as I have homework to do. So just to make things clear, the laptop works completely find when connected to the charger except for what I said before. Oh and this is happens when I am on either the home or school image. And it runs on windows 7 of course

Nov 1, 2009just purchased a Gateway P7902h Laptop on the 30th - it came with 64 bit vista and I decided to upgrade the OS to Windows 7 (64x as well).
Ever since the install the laptop has been unable to detect my graphics card, a Geforce GTX 260M. Every time I open a driver installation program (Gateway site only has the drivers for Vista 64x so I tried those, then the Windows 7 64x ones from the Nvidia website.) I get a 'could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your hardware' error.
Looking through the Device Manager under Display Adapters, it only has the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter and not the actual card itself. Can anyone help?
Monitor Not Detected
Dec 7, 2009I'm running into this and issue and I can't peg down a cause. I recently updated my Vista HTPC to Windows 7. When booting up I can get into the OS, but the screen goes black shortly after.
I have tried two monitors: the Panasonic plasma just goes black and when I try Samsung Syncmaster LCD it looks like it's searching for digital, then analog sources.
I have an Nvidia 8400 GS card and I've tried both the 191.07 and 195.62 drivers. I've also let Windows install the drivers after uninstalling the Display Adapter in Device Manager in Safe Mode.
When I start in Safe Mode I cannot recreate the issue. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers in Safe Mode.
Usb Keyboard Not Detected?
Jun 15, 2011my usb keyboard works fine on my freind pc win7ultimate32bit, i have same os service pack 1 also installed, my usb is amkette company---better than local, Problemis that it was working grt for 5 months, but for past 3 weeks it is detected as a unknown device, it is detected sometimes as hid device and works well for 3-4 hoursbut then suddenly goes off and a popup with malfunction and unknown device appers all time, then it will never that day maybe 10 min sometime. i plug out all power cables,uninstall usb controllers tried everything on internet, some techniques work but no permanent solution. i even reinstalled windows last week no luck.It works on my freind pc., diff in my freind pc is he has intel motherboard and i have biostar a785ge everything up to date,only solution that is left is to use a ps/2 to usb convertor(i have to wait for 3 weeks).

This thing works, my DVD is detected in BIOS, UDMA mode 4. DVD is bootable with the proper media, it is also detected and works fine in WinPE booted from my Blu-ray.
The problem is with my Windows 7 installation. The DVD is not detected after I boot. I have to go to Device manager and click "Scan for hardware change", then the DVD-RW is detected and it works fine after that.
I tried many things, I uninstalled Daemon tools, VirtualBox, I tried a registry fix (lowerfilter, upperfilter), no good.
External HDD Not Detected?
Feb 2, 2012This has been a problem since moving to a Windows 7 64 bit machine.
I plug a HDD into an external USB and...nothing. Not listed in the computer "tree" when I go to administrative tools/Disk management it is not listed, and in the bottom tray there is no icon to safely eject the drive, as if it isnt even there. It is spinning though so I am afraid to unplug it lest I corrupt info on the drive.
Laptop's HDD Not Detected?
Jan 4, 2013I already posted this in the general discussion forum but since then I think it has evolved from a windows 7 problem to a hardware problem. When I turn on my laptop I'm brought to a Windows Error Recovery screen from which I could choose to either launch startup repair or start windows normally. Eventually both options lead to Windows loading files and bringing me to a screen with 2 more options. One I can choose the HDD/Operating system but there is nothing to choose. I can also choose to restore my computer using a system image, but none of the options given have helped me other than identifying that the HDD was the problem. I can also load drivers which brings me to the system 32 folder in my X: drive.

Jan 28, 2010I was using two monitors with two ATI Radeon 4800 cards and that worked fine. I just purchased another monitor (Samsung) and now I cannot get it detected. The device manager is only showing 2 generic PnP monitors. I'm not sure why they would not be the specific monitors brands either (one Samsung and one Acer).
Any way of getting the third monitor detected? I've heard about deleting the graphics card drivers and then the monitor might be detected. But I do not know the procedure for doing that.
