How To Get Back Install Folder After Taking HD Ownership

May 16, 2012

I am running windows 7 professional 64bit and I was wrongly advised to take ownership of my hard drive. I am not having any software issues per say, just most of my icons now are either blank or default windows icon. Everything opens on the correct programs and windows is running fine except it keeps trying to an update that will not apply when I shut down. I have searched the forums here and done the icon database thing etc., but now after much searching I have discovered that taking ownership somehow corrupted my install folder.

Its still there but obviously not complete because of the icon issue and I am led to believe that if I want to uninstall something I may encounter problems. I found a system restore explorer program ((link was taken out so the rest of my post made no sense.)) I tried to install it but it keeps saying it needs to be on the host hard drive to install even when I try and install on the default path. So, how do I undo the damage? Can I change permissions of the hard drive again? and if so what too? How do I retrieve my install folder prior to the mess up and put things right?

Taking Ownership Of A File?

Mar 4, 2012

I need to take ownership of a file (relating to Avast anti-virus) in order to be able to remove it from Add/Remove in the Control Panel and also to remove its directory from Program Files on my C drive.I have to do this through the Cmd Prompt and act as administrator. I have right-clicked on the Cmd Prompt and get this (which is what I ought to see):

C:windowssystem32>

What I am not sure about is the path to the directory (or folder) that I want to delete: I don't know the syntax. And, can I delete the entire folder in one go, or do I need to remove it contents file by file?

Cannot Replace Shell32.exe Even After Taking Ownership

Jun 21, 2012

During an attempt to install a custom theme, I needed to replace explorer.exe, shell32.dll and a couple of other files. I used the reg hack to take ownership of these files.I managed to change explorer.exe to explorerBACKUP.exe and insert the modified explorer.exe file......However, when it comes to shell32.dll in the system32 folder, I can rename it to shell32BACKUP.dll, but when I try to drag the replacement shell32.dll file into the system32 folder, I click OK on all the permission requests, a window pops up saying it is copying the file there, but the replacement file does not appear in the system32 folder. Also, having realised it won't let me replace the file, I tried to rename shell32BACKUP.dll to shell32.dll but it won't let me! It appears to work, i.e. no errors, but the name does not change. The same thing happens on one of the other files I have to replace (i forget the name of it now) which is also in the system32 folder. what I need to do to replace the shell32.dll file?I'm running Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit.

What Are The Risks Of Taking Ownership Of System32

Oct 28, 2012

While trying to fix an issue with a simulator (FSX) that involved adding a .dll file to system 32, a user said in a guide to fix said issue to paste the .dll file into system 32, but to do this, you would need to take ownership of the system 32 folder. Which I did, and the .dll was pasted successfully. However stupidly I didn't do any research until after the CMD/DOS window did the whole ownership process.

Access Denied Even After Taking Ownership?

Oct 17, 2012

I am logged on as an administrator. I am trying to move a dll file to my c:Program Files(x86)Game directory. When I try to apply full access to the destination folder all the checkmarks disappear when I click apply. When I try to open the dll file with notepad, windows tells me I have to get permission from (myself). I can't change permissions for (x86) folder, so I moved the directory in question to c:games. I am still being denied access to both the dll file and the C:games directory when trying to copy. is there a 3rd party utility that will solve my problem?

Slave Drive Access / Taking Ownership Of Folders - File Not Found Error

Feb 8, 2012

I know there are a myriad of slave drive access issue posts on here. My thing is that I've managed to take ownership of my slave drive; formerly in a tower - now trying to access it thru my windows 7 laptop. Ive taken ownership of " my documents," but it doesn't seem like it took; I still have to take ownership of every folder in it individually when I go into it. Furthermore, when I going into my music or video folders - I get a "file not found" error when I try to open the files.

Windows 7 Folder Ownership?

Sep 12, 2010

I supplied a friend a new PC with Windows 7 installed. I also supplied Acronis True Image Home 2010 for backup purposes. I wanted to test the backups so I took an image of the system (using Acronis) and saved it to my USB hard drive. I plugged it into my Windows 7 PC which I also run Acronis True Image 2010. I mounted the image which was successful. I want to access the "users" folder. So I tried taking ownership of the folder but it displays "you only have permission to view the current owner on..." I want to be able to access the users documents, photos etc to make sure I can recover files in case of a system crash

Cannot Take Ownership Of Folder - No Security Tab In Properties

Mar 26, 2012

I have a folder with a saved webpage on it on a DVD that I am trying to copy to my computer, when I try it first tells me that I need to provide administrator permission to copy the file (I thought I was admin). Then when I click continue it says: "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from Everyone to make changes to this file"

And all I can to is keep hitting Retry. If I try to take ownership of the folder I run into another problem, when I right click the folder and go to properties, there is no security tab, just General, Sharing, and Customize. And if I uncheck the Read Only box, I get Access Denied!

Permissions / Ownership And An Undeletable Folder

Jan 5, 2011

Im in the process of spring cleaning my big stack of hard-drives, in preperation for doing a clean windows install onto my shiney new Kingston V100 SSD.I'm currently looking at one of my 2TB external archive drives, which used to be the system disk on my media-server but is now just an archive disk. Anyways, on that drive, I found a windows folder (no big shock for a system disk) and I figured that I don't need that, as I've previous migrated all the user files when I took it out of the old machine. So I went to delete it, and it told me that I needed permission from 'S-1-5-21-432763403-189175183-190391661- 1000' to delete the folder. From there, I went to the permissions tab, figuring that I'd just have to give myself the rights to get rid of it. No dice there, I couldn't change any permissions, or add or remove users. From there, I went over to the advanced tab, figuring that I could take ownership and from there get the rights I need.

'You do not have permission to read the contents of E:etc etc, do you want to replace permissions with permissions granting full control?' dialogue, so I hit yes, which brought up:'An error occurred while applying security information to E: Access is denied.' None of the ownership, nor permissions changed, so I still can't get rid of anything in the folder. So, what do I have to do to get rid of this thing? Sure its only 20gb on a 2tb disk, but its clutter and I want rid of it! There is a possibility that this was a botched install of windows, rather than a full one (i know it happened once, but I can't remember if it was this one or a different drive), which I guess might explain why the permissions are all hinky, but either way, I wanna know how to clean it out.

Cannot Take Ownership/cannot Change Permissions For Windows Folder

Feb 9, 2012

All this started when I just wanted to change the way the clock looked to a custom one.

I go to the Windows Sidebar folder to locate the Gadgets folder for the clocks, and I try to make backups of a few of the files in the clocks folder by moving some of them to a new folder I created on the desktop. I cannot move them, access denied. I try taking ownership of the folder, cannot do it, access denied. I try changing the permissions, cannot do it, the boxes you can tick are grayed out. Long story short, I tried backing out of all the folders, trying to take ownership and change permissions all the way back to the Program Files folder itself to no avail. It seems if it is a default Windows folder I cannot mess with it in anyway; this also seems to be the case with my McAfee folder, but something that is less of a risk to change, like my Zune folder, I can change around no problem.

Quick rundown, I am using Windows 7 Ultimate edition, this is my only account for the computer, and it is an admin account. I have tried using several different "Take Ownership" downloads, including the one suggested on this site, but it does not work for the Window folders. "Take Ownership" won't even show up if I right-click on the folder. I know the Take Ownership mod is installed correctly, because it will popup for something that is not a default folder, like my Zune folder. .

Regain Ownership Of HD After Windows 7 Install

Aug 28, 2011

After finally upgrading to Win 7 from XP, I came across a problem reclaiming ownership of my HDs. It was a 2TB Samsung HD so I was scared at first, but through Disk Management, it was able to detect it. However, I'm unable to save anything onto it because unlike the rest of the HDs that went just fine claiming ownership, this one wasn't working. The first error I got was a corrupted Recycle bin which I've tried many times to delete but no avail, thinking that was the source of the problem. I then went to DM again and noticed that this drive was listed as: "Healthy: SYSTEM, Active, Primary Partition". I wanted this HD to be for data only. Now that I've unhidden system files and folders on that drive, I tried to delete the system folders manually but again the ownership wouldn't let me.I guess the main question I want to ask is how can I remove those system files/folders (so the HD won't show up as a 'SYSTEM' drive in DM) so that it will be just a regular hard drive, without formatting or deleting everything?Which will probably lead me to ask the next question: Will doing all of this enable me to reclaim full ownership of my HD while keeping my data?

It Is Taking Long Time To Install

Jul 17, 2010

so my problem is that the installation of Windows 7 Ultimate takes way longer than expected to install. So far I've botten to about 80% on "Expanding files" after about 7 hours. My specs is in my profile, unfortunatly I can't be nrd precise at this moment, as I havet no possibility of checking while installation is on, but the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor (or what the name was) told me it was good enough to run Windows 7 in both 32 and 64bit. The copy I'm installing is Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (Swedish DVD), bought packaged with both 32bit and 64bit DVDs. I'll copy the pre-made questions for installation problems under here, with as accurate info as possible.

How To Fix User Folder So Its Back To Normal

Dec 27, 2011

I was trying to make it so I could see where my appdata folder was in my user folder and now my PC name folder that was in "users" is no longer there. My user folder had the name of my computer on it with a lock symbol. I entered that folder, found that appdata wasn't showing yet. So I right clicked on the empty space in window, selected properties and at the bottom checked the box "hidden" in the attributes section (thinking this would show the hidden folders), then I think I clicked okay. Some processing took place and then the processing stopped mid way and a message came up (I forget exactly what it said) it asked me to give administrator permission to do something. I then noticed the advanced button next to attritributes and thought maybe I was supposed to enable hidden folders in there, and that enabling hidden attributes may have been a mistake, so I cancelled out of the process midway at the point where I was asked for administrator permission. Now my PC-name user folder has disappeared.

Folder Permissions - Unable To Revert Back

Sep 21, 2012

I am in a problem here. A day before yesterday, I was messing up with folder permissions and unfortunately I messed up pretty badly.

The problem is I changed the folder permissions of C:Program Files and C:Program Files (x86) to Deny for all users. These included

Authenticated Users
System
Administrators
Users

I was logged in with an Administrator Account. Now the problem is I cannot access the above folders with any user. All my applications installed in those folders do not work.

I tried several solutions available on the net like changing ownership, using THE Administrator account, etc but to no avail and these folders are still locked.

Is there anyway I can access these files or shall I resort to the ultimate step i.e. re-install windows.

Windows 7 Folder Option Reverts Back To Read Only

Aug 25, 2011

I am using win7 64 bit operating system. Also using microsoft office 2007 (home and school) and have recently run in to this issue. I can go through and edit an ms office file , I can edit it but when I try to save it I'm blocked because 'file is a read only' . If I rename the file I can save but then the renamed saved file becomes read only. Sure enough the word file 's properties show that it is read only. A check of folder options also shows that folders and therefore contents? are also read only.

Unchecking the read only box in properties does not work. You can uncheck the box and apply change but when you reopen folder its back to read only. Don't know if this is an office prob or a win 7 prob. Its really a problem when editing and saving a file with office. Also it is not consistent - sometimes it is all files in a folder that are office files sometimes only a few and , not often, and once the problem disappeared. Its strange.
