What Are The Risks Of Taking Ownership Of System32
Oct 28, 2012
While trying to fix an issue with a simulator (FSX) that involved adding a .dll file to system 32, a user said in a guide to fix said issue to paste the .dll file into system 32, but to do this, you would need to take ownership of the system 32 folder. Which I did, and the .dll was pasted successfully. However stupidly I didn't do any research until after the CMD/DOS window did the whole ownership process.

I need to take ownership of a file (relating to Avast anti-virus) in order to be able to remove it from Add/Remove in the Control Panel and also to remove its directory from Program Files on my C drive.I have to do this through the Cmd Prompt and act as administrator. I have right-clicked on the Cmd Prompt and get this (which is what I ought to see):
C:windowssystem32>
What I am not sure about is the path to the directory (or folder) that I want to delete: I don't know the syntax. And, can I delete the entire folder in one go, or do I need to remove it contents file by file?

During an attempt to install a custom theme, I needed to replace explorer.exe, shell32.dll and a couple of other files. I used the reg hack to take ownership of these files.I managed to change explorer.exe to explorerBACKUP.exe and insert the modified explorer.exe file......However, when it comes to shell32.dll in the system32 folder, I can rename it to shell32BACKUP.dll, but when I try to drag the replacement shell32.dll file into the system32 folder, I click OK on all the permission requests, a window pops up saying it is copying the file there, but the replacement file does not appear in the system32 folder. Also, having realised it won't let me replace the file, I tried to rename shell32BACKUP.dll to shell32.dll but it won't let me! It appears to work, i.e. no errors, but the name does not change. The same thing happens on one of the other files I have to replace (i forget the name of it now) which is also in the system32 folder. what I need to do to replace the shell32.dll file?I'm running Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit.

I am logged on as an administrator. I am trying to move a dll file to my c:Program Files(x86)Game directory. When I try to apply full access to the destination folder all the checkmarks disappear when I click apply. When I try to open the dll file with notepad, windows tells me I have to get permission from (myself). I can't change permissions for (x86) folder, so I moved the directory in question to c:games. I am still being denied access to both the dll file and the C:games directory when trying to copy. is there a 3rd party utility that will solve my problem?

I am running windows 7 professional 64bit and I was wrongly advised to take ownership of my hard drive. I am not having any software issues per say, just most of my icons now are either blank or default windows icon. Everything opens on the correct programs and windows is running fine except it keeps trying to an update that will not apply when I shut down. I have searched the forums here and done the icon database thing etc., but now after much searching I have discovered that taking ownership somehow corrupted my install folder.
Its still there but obviously not complete because of the icon issue and I am led to believe that if I want to uninstall something I may encounter problems. I found a system restore explorer program ((link was taken out so the rest of my post made no sense.)) I tried to install it but it keeps saying it needs to be on the host hard drive to install even when I try and install on the default path. So, how do I undo the damage? Can I change permissions of the hard drive again? and if so what too? How do I retrieve my install folder prior to the mess up and put things right?

I know there are a myriad of slave drive access issue posts on here. My thing is that I've managed to take ownership of my slave drive; formerly in a tower - now trying to access it thru my windows 7 laptop. Ive taken ownership of " my documents," but it doesn't seem like it took; I still have to take ownership of every folder in it individually when I go into it. Furthermore, when I going into my music or video folders - I get a "file not found" error when I try to open the files.

I'm thinking of upgrading from 7 Professional to 7 Ultimate. I'd really like the ability to boot from a VHD. I've heard that Starter, Home Premium, and Professional, are all the same as Ultimate, they just have alot of features locked. Is this true? I'm also aware that an upgrade to 7 from Vista could bring system instability/slower performance, and I'd like to know if there are any risks by using WAU. Thoughts?
Edit: After reading my post, I realize what I said might confuse some of you. I'm not wanting to upgrade from vista, I don't have vista. I was using that as an example.

I can't run any programs from system32 folder (like chkdsk or chkntfs) with Command Prompt (even in an elevated one and I turned off my UAC). It'll return like "''chkdsk' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."So I have to navigate to system32 folder first then using Shift+Right Click and select "Open command window here" then run the program from thereBut using the usual Command Prompt, I still can run programs from Windows folder (like regedit)

Its pretty nice, except that when I get to the login page for windows, it shows a picture of a finger print instead of my user pic. i found out that the image for the fingerprint scanner is part of a file called "BioCredProv.dll" in the system32 folder. So I made a cop of it, edited the copy with a dll editor so that the bitmap image is that of my user account, but now I can't replace the file in the system 32 folder. I've tried deleting the original and replacing it with the edited one, I've added 1 to the end of the edited file's name so it is "BioCredProv1.dll" and then attempted to change the registry to use this new file (but it gives me an error saying "Cannot edit: Error writing the value's new contents." I know it can be changed as I've seen another forum where two people gave two ways to change it (one using an ubuntu linux system to change the system32 file which I don't know how to do, and the other by creating his own new registry file, which I once again don't know how to do.)

I want to upgrade a computer that is running Windows XP currently to Windows 7. I know that it is possible and that this computer is capable of running Windows 7, and I have the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade package. However, there was some damage done by a virus on this computer. The virus was removed, but there are System32 files that are damaged as a result. The owner of the computer had this machine custom built, and they don't have any of the disks for Windows or anything to try running a repair. I am wondering if running the upgrade will fix the problems with System32 files or if they will even be a factor in the upgrade.

As the title says, there is no OptionalFeatures.exe in my System32 folder. I recently let a friend of mine install 7 on my laptop (I have been on XP since its launch). I need to run networking from this machine to the other computers in the house (1 Mac and one on XP) to share files between, but I can't as there is no medium to do so.Is there any way to obtain a fresh copy of OptionalFeatures.exe without having to do a complete reinstall of the OS?

At first I tried to reinstall audio drivers, flash, java... nothing worked. I checked the registry and ta-daaah! The Drivers32 registry folder [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32] is empty! If I try to create a new string, it bleeps and says an error blocks the key opening. I checked the permissions and resctrictions and there is full permission. If I create a .reg file containing the correct list of strings and open it, it says it has been added, but when I open regedit it's still empty!I also tried to install K-Lite codec pack, but it says the same thing as the regedit does.

Every time I try to start my computer, it says "windows is loading files," which it normally doesn't, and then Startup Repair pops up. I let it run for about an hour, and it finally finished, but it said it could not find the source of the problem. I looked in the log for the Startup Repair, and it said that everything ran smoothly, except for the file scan. it took over 100,000 ms for it to process, and it said the test failed, along with mentioning that the system32 file was corrupted. I don't know much about computers, not do I remember getting an installation disc. (The computer was a gift to me.)
