View 15 Replies View RelatedWhen I booted up my laptop my desktop lost all its icons and a dialog box popped up saying:Location is not availableC:Users<Username>Desktop is not accessible. The directory name is invalid.I went to the C:Users<Username> directory and saw that my Desktop folder became a file...When I try to open the Desktop.. the open with dialog box came out. I tried creating a new folder with the same name (Desktop) and Windows says that a folder with the same name already exists. However when I right click on it and tried going to properties, then the Previous Versions tab.. I can actually recover my old files (1 week ago.. but I still need the current ones and of course use my desktop as well). How can I fix this T_T.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAlright, recently I've had a weird problem. My desktop has apparently.. de-synced with the Users\username\Desktop folder. It's a mild annoyance at the moment, because I'm playing with modding a few games I have, but sooner or later I'll actually need my desktop back.I can't actually move anything from the desktop itself, almost like the files aren't even on the screen. It's also not updated with the files I've added to the username\Desktop\ folder, nor with the ones I've deleted.I've tried system restore, but it didn't do anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI work for a large corp which provides a standard image. I install this image, and wish to make changes particular to our area (About 8 offices)
Then burn the image for new workstations. I have been doing the desktop customization, show menus, desktop icon size, etc. I then go to C:Users and copy that customized user and rename it to default.
This works but has side effects, such as a new users default location for documents is always the original users. Plus some of our software fails. So I am now wanting to change the registry to do the same thing.
My question: Is there a way to edit the "Default User" in the registry so that it would be used for any new user? That way I could set the default registry and all new users would get those settings.
I changed my settings somehow when I first purchased my new laptop, which is running Windows 7.I wanted to turn off my desktop background and succeeded. Unfortunately, I can't get any backgrounds to display now. I have tried going into control panel and changing the background there and the icon in "personalization" changes and shows the thumbnail of the image I am trying to set as my background. However, my desktop remains black.

View 4 Replies View Relatedim using "turn off display: 1 min" setting on my power option.
after several minutes away, when i come and i "press any key" to my computer, the display turned back on, but the desktop freezes.
i can only move my mouse but i cant right or left click to my desktop. i usually wait for like 40 - 60 secs for my desktop to be responding again.
is there something wrong with my computer? cos i am doing fresh install, and didnt modify any settings yet.
i hereby conclude what makes my desktop freezes is when i checked on "auto-hide the taskbar" setting on taskbar properties and used "turn off display after" setting.
so, these are things that might happen:
1. i disabled "auto-hide the taskbar" and disabled "turn off display after"
with / without any open programs
result: desktop fine
2. i enabled "auto-hide the taskbar" and disabled "turn off display after"
with / without any open programs
result: desktop fine
3. i disabled "auto-hide the taskbar" and enabled "turn off display after"
with / without any open programs
result: desktop fine
4. i enabled "auto-hide the taskbar" and enabled "turn off display after"
with a/some open program(s)
result: desktop fine
5. i enabled "auto-hide the taskbar" and enabled "turn off display after"
without any open programs
result: desktop freezes
PS.
i havent installed the latest display driver yet. i only now have the Ati Mobility Radeon X1400 from Windows Update, the latest one. i cant find the actual driver for my video card from my manufacturer's site.
I'm a visual artist and I use a program called ArKaos for AV installations and nightclub visuals. I'm thinking of building a HTPC to take around with me as my laptop is not quite powerful enough for the work I do. I was thinking of using the laptop as a reference monitor for the HTPC using Remote desktop over LAN but I've run into some issues trying to set it up at home on my main PC. When I run Remote desktop I loose the ability to select which display is being used for full screen in ArKaos.
- This is what the display preferences look like without Remote Desktop:
- And this is what I see when I'm running Remote Desktop:
I have extremely little knowledge of Remote Desktop so I don't know how it handles display drivers but it would seem it uses it's own driver (RDPDD) when it's active. Is there anyway around this, all I want to do is have my laptop displaying ArKaos' clip view and have my second GPU output running to a projector.
When I turn on my HTPC it displays the Windows 7 Desktop for a bit before being able to open Media Center. Is there a way to have Windows 7 not display the Desktop if it knows Media Center will be opening thereafter?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently sent my laptop in for minor repairs. Since having it back, my desktop background is staying black. I can "change" it in my settings, but the slideshow is not displayed (all icons, etc. are still visible). The selected background will flash on the screen briefly if I am closing a window or minimizing to the desktop. I've looked through settings to try to deactivate this black screen, but I haven't found anything useful.
View 8 Replies View RelatedJust updated from Vista 64 to Windows7 64 build7100 .
Using DellWFP 32" monitor and ATI v7200 video card.
My desktop will not extend all the way left to right or top to bottom on my monitor.
It has black bar around desktop extending to edges of monitor.
When I set screen resolution to max 2560x1280 or recommended 1280x800 , then desktop goes full height and width of monitor. However these settings do not work for me at all.
Any other resolution setting and desktop is centered on monitor, very small with black all around it.
Here is image I took with my camera, as a screen shot only displays the desktop. This shows how the desktop is residing within the monitor. I've tried every resolution setting there is for this video card , checked to make sure I had the latest drivers also.
I just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive. The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)
1. Install windows normally.
2. After install, boot from installation disk.
3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair".
4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall
5. Verify all files copied successfully.
6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users
7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings"
8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users
9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users
10. Restart computer.
Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this. All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".
I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.
So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.
Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?
What are the all users and default users folders? Do I need them or can I delete them if I am the only user.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe are using some Lenovo Q180's as media players for digital signage. For the most part they have all been working fine except for 2. Randomly, the signage presentation will re-size itself and move into the upper left corner. This happens randomly and not at the same times each day. They are hooked up to a LED tv via HDMI. I have tried switching the HDMI cables, ensuring all drivers are current and tried most all the basic troubleshooting. A simple re-start will get everything back looking and running fine. Again, this is a digital signage application so we cannot tell if this has occurred until the client calls to let us know which is not good for us.

It's the same for single display, the monitor will not work on cable 1 except at startup. Both 'Extend these displays' in Windows Screen Resolution and 'Extend' in the Nvidia Control Panel is selected. And changing which one is primary does not turn on monitor 1. Nor does switching the position of display 1 in either (ex.left/right/top/bottom).GeForce 8400 GS; Dual Monitor Solution 59 pin (DMS-59) to 2 VGA adapter -tried two of these adapter cables.atest Driver: 306.23 - installed a clean reset install of the latest Nvidia driver released last week.Same Resolution: 2 of the 4 monitors I have tried have the exact same 'recommended' resolution (1280X 1024), both 60Hz, and even chose 16 bit color for both instead of 32 to reduce resources.
Linux worked: Dual display worked immediately when I tried it in Ubuntu 10. So, it's not the hardware. It works in Ubuntu 12 too but not properly -it won't transfer windows across displays. My Windows 7 64 is an upgrade from Vista 64. One person in another forum with the same problem resolved theirs by reinstalling Windows 7. But another got the same problem only after a fresh clean install of Windows 7 64 with the same GeForce 8400 GS and DMS-59 when it had previously worked in Vista.
