View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is my work laptop. I have my standard Music library, which is a directory directly off the C drive. When I download or move into that "Music" directory the directory I moved has a lock icon on it. In order to get rid of the icon, I need to add "Authenticated Users" to the list of groups, and then I need to take ownership of the directory under my account in order to to do anything. If this directory is in my download directory, it's fine...but as soon as I move it there the above situation arises.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I move directories the resulting directory needs to be modified under the security tab to add the "Authenticated Users" user in order to remove the lock icon. I've verified that I am the owner of the directory...and the other users with access to the directory is "System", My Account and "domain/Administrators".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI work for a large corp which provides a standard image. I install this image, and wish to make changes particular to our area (About 8 offices)
Then burn the image for new workstations. I have been doing the desktop customization, show menus, desktop icon size, etc. I then go to C:Users and copy that customized user and rename it to default.
This works but has side effects, such as a new users default location for documents is always the original users. Plus some of our software fails. So I am now wanting to change the registry to do the same thing.
My question: Is there a way to edit the "Default User" in the registry so that it would be used for any new user? That way I could set the default registry and all new users would get those settings.
Everytime i delete an icon on my desktop, another one becomes transparent I've been looking what was the problem couldn't find anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I booted up my laptop my desktop lost all its icons and a dialog box popped up saying:Location is not availableC:Users<Username>Desktop is not accessible. The directory name is invalid.I went to the C:Users<Username> directory and saw that my Desktop folder became a file...When I try to open the Desktop.. the open with dialog box came out. I tried creating a new folder with the same name (Desktop) and Windows says that a folder with the same name already exists. However when I right click on it and tried going to properties, then the Previous Versions tab.. I can actually recover my old files (1 week ago.. but I still need the current ones and of course use my desktop as well). How can I fix this T_T.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the resolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAlright, recently I've had a weird problem. My desktop has apparently.. de-synced with the Users\username\Desktop folder. It's a mild annoyance at the moment, because I'm playing with modding a few games I have, but sooner or later I'll actually need my desktop back.I can't actually move anything from the desktop itself, almost like the files aren't even on the screen. It's also not updated with the files I've added to the username\Desktop\ folder, nor with the ones I've deleted.I've tried system restore, but it didn't do anything.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have spent weeks researching this for an effective solution and nothing out there is working. What makes it even more maddening is everything seemed to be fine until an auto download of MS Updates went through and then this icon disappearing act started. I have already restored my computer once and that appeared to fix the problem for a while but then it reared its ugly head again and now no matter what version I restore it to, the icons still disappear. Here's the thing though! I can almost tell, by watching the lower right corner of the start bar when the start bar symbols pop up, about when the desktop icons will go away. SO ISN'T THERE SOME WAY TO GENERATE A LOG (EventViewer maybe?) THAT I COULD POST OR SEND TO SOMEONE SMARTER THAN ME, THAT MIGHT NARROW DOWN WICH APP OR STARTUP ITEM IS DOING THIS? I have looked at the Event Viewer but I'm not of a mind to understand what I am seeing or looking for. But I have to think if I know roughly which startup symbol showed up just before the icons went away, we could ascertain what's causing it.
Otherwise has anyone found the "REAL" working solution yet? Specs and DiagnosisWin 7 32Bit, ASUS laptop) Have already ran all sorts of anti virus, anti spyware, anti malwares. I do believe one of those found a virus and perhaps that changed a registry setting to make this problem start. But then again I did not notice the issue until after the auto Windows Update went through so it's hard to know which brought this on. I am serious when I say I've tried just about all of the posted solutions - some are so rudimentary (like turning off-and-on the desktop icons selector, and turning off the Windows orphaned shortcut (4 allowed) checking). And others I've tried, like registry changes and the like, are a lot more involved - BUT NONE DO A THING. And since it appears this is a relatively new issue that A LOT of users are struggling with - could it be something in the most recent Windows Update perhaps? Oh, and BTW I DO NOT show that I have INFRAREDRECORDER installed in my system, unless it might go under a different name? Because I do seem to also recall that about the same time that my system loaded the latest Windows Update I also had downloaded a new media player program (long since removed and name is forgotten). Could that media player have changed a reg setting perhaps? And how do we find it
