I recently installed windows 7 professional from windows XP.I noticed everything is gone and the only icon on my desktop is the garbage icon.is that correct? Dosnt windows 7 OS come with other programs such as Microsoft Office?
I have tried to make this computer work for two weeks now and it's inventing new ways every day to make life hard for me. I want to associate a program with a file type, easy in XP but takes me a hour with Windows 7.
I just renamed a small bunch of files, THE FILES DISAPPEAR !!! No not really disappear, the files are still in the folder but these are invisible in Explorer. Do a search for them and they are there, move them into another folder and they appear in the other folder, move them back to the original folder and the files become invisible again.
Whenever I single left click on an icon, file, or folder a repetitive popup appears asking if I want to send whatever I clicked on to the recycle bin. The item is sent to the recycle bin regardless.
Some emails from safe sources (e.g. my subscription to the Washington Post) appear in my inbox with no subject and the contents are garbage.I can open the email on my IP's website but not in any of my two computers using Windows Live Mail. [code]

I have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the resolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen.
I use Windows 7.I delete shortcut icon of program on desktop by shift+delete keyAnd when I open program(it work as normal) but it show unknown icon.I DELETE ALL SHORTCUT ICONS OF ANY PROGRAM (like MICROSOFT OFFICE, ABODE PHOTO SHOP,...) ON DESKTOP, NOW ALL THOSE PROGRAMS IS SHOWN UNKNOWN ICON IN ANYWHERE OF MY WINDOW LIKE ON TASKBAR AND START>PROGRAM.
I have spent weeks researching this for an effective solution and nothing out there is working. What makes it even more maddening is everything seemed to be fine until an auto download of MS Updates went through and then this icon disappearing act started. I have already restored my computer once and that appeared to fix the problem for a while but then it reared its ugly head again and now no matter what version I restore it to, the icons still disappear. Here's the thing though! I can almost tell, by watching the lower right corner of the start bar when the start bar symbols pop up, about when the desktop icons will go away. SO ISN'T THERE SOME WAY TO GENERATE A LOG (EventViewer maybe?) THAT I COULD POST OR SEND TO SOMEONE SMARTER THAN ME, THAT MIGHT NARROW DOWN WICH APP OR STARTUP ITEM IS DOING THIS? I have looked at the Event Viewer but I'm not of a mind to understand what I am seeing or looking for. But I have to think if I know roughly which startup symbol showed up just before the icons went away, we could ascertain what's causing it.
Otherwise has anyone found the "REAL" working solution yet? Specs and DiagnosisWin 7 32Bit, ASUS laptop) Have already ran all sorts of anti virus, anti spyware, anti malwares. I do believe one of those found a virus and perhaps that changed a registry setting to make this problem start. But then again I did not notice the issue until after the auto Windows Update went through so it's hard to know which brought this on. I am serious when I say I've tried just about all of the posted solutions - some are so rudimentary (like turning off-and-on the desktop icons selector, and turning off the Windows orphaned shortcut (4 allowed) checking). And others I've tried, like registry changes and the like, are a lot more involved - BUT NONE DO A THING. And since it appears this is a relatively new issue that A LOT of users are struggling with - could it be something in the most recent Windows Update perhaps? Oh, and BTW I DO NOT show that I have INFRAREDRECORDER installed in my system, unless it might go under a different name? Because I do seem to also recall that about the same time that my system loaded the latest Windows Update I also had downloaded a new media player program (long since removed and name is forgotten). Could that media player have changed a reg setting perhaps? And how do we find it
All my windows7 icons on my desktop have another icon on top of the original. hey all work perfectly well but I can't change them back to what they were. I can see the original underneath and have tried to change it without any luck.
My computer has taken quite a beating last night, power went out 4 times sporadically, thankfully I have a voltage regulator. The funny thing is.. before the first blackout, I had rearranged a couple of files/folders, and desktop icons, and whenever I would turn the computer back on,everything was laid off the way it was before I arranged it, who is used to TPLINK wireless adapters, is it normal that whenever the adapter's driver gets outdated it will let you know with a BSOD?
when i install windows 7 on my sony laptop the webcam drivers are their but i don't know where i can go to open it because it does not bring the icon on the desktop
Lost My computer icon on the Win 7 desktop. None of the usual solutions are returning it...such as selecting it from the Start Menu to show on desktop or Control Panel to Personalization, or reapplying defaults.
I've set my icons to a certain size ( small) and placed in locations. After a restart they go back to medium size and line up on the left side of the screen
I am using Windows 7 and my recycle bin icon is missing from my desktop. Doing the "right click on the desktop, personalize, change desktop icons, check the recycle bin box" doesn't work. Is there anything else I can try?
I just got my PC back after 3 1/2 weeks of a nightmare involving the motherboard going bad and taking two processors with it.While troubleshooting/fixing it, the PC was hooked up to a 1024x768 monitor (mine is 1280x960), and so the desktop icons rearranged.Although a small hassle in the relative scheme of things, I was not looking forward to repositioning the icons when I hooked the PC up to my monitor. But lo and behold, when I did, all the icons were in the correct place.
The above two will not be on the same drive. One drive will be a hybrid and the other a ssd. Each will be mounted on an internal sata mobile rack using their own individual tray: one tray will have to be removed before the other one can be inserted and not "hot" swaped.
We could like to build up the Kiosk in Windows 7 Machine. Before, in Windows XP, we can make the desktop in user's profile as read only and prevent them remove/delete desktop icon. How can I do it in Windows 7? Any GPO can be apply ?
I am trying to find the registry key that will change the desktop icon size to small.
This is mainly for new users, or for the default user. I have workstations that have several people sharing them and need this for everyone.
I have looked in these locations: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags1DesktopIconSize And HKey_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopWindowMetricsShell Icon Size I played with both these settings for myself, and the desktop icons do not change. If I reboot, the first key value goes back to 32, and the second key stays at 96. But my icons never change in size. I am looking for any way to do this in the registry. I could try copying the ntuser.dat but fear I will still have issues with paths, and other defaults that will cause the same problem I had originally.
