Dedicate A CPU Core To A Single Process
Mar 28, 2012I have a 2006 single-threaded game that sometimes uses 100% of one core. I have a 3 core AMD CPU.
Will dedicating a core to the game boost the performance a little bit? Or is Windows 7 is already automatically moving processes to another core when one core tends to be saturated?
How can I dedicate one core to the game without having to manually set all the other processes to use only the two other cores? Is there a way to pre-set the core affinity before a process is run? (Windows System Resource Manager seems to be able to do this, but there doesn't seem to be a version of it for Windows 7) Maybe defining the game priority as Real Time would achieve the same effect? Or is there a risk that this would hang Windows and other processes?

May 5, 2009How do I allocate more ram to XP the default is 256 & remains Grey showing the XP is hibernated (when closed) or it say its running so how do I shut down XP mode completely so I can allocate more memory?
The start button gives 2 option log off & disconnect
I press disconnect the next screen I see shut down option greyed out, until I shut down I don't think I can change the ram allocation setting.

Jan 13, 2012For some dumb reason when I was installing Win7 on this new hard disk I allocated only 40gb to my C: partition, and the rest of the disk for another. At the time, I was thinking that 40gb should be well enough for Windows and any programs I install. However, I play a lot of games, and it seems that every game developer thinks it's a brilliant idea to stuff game files/configurations/saves into My Documents, and so my C: drive is constantly near-full. I was wondering if there was a way to allocate more memory to the partition without doing a reformat? I did not set it as dynamic when I created it.

Jan 15, 2012My girlfriend came to me saying she was trying to do something on her windows 7 computer and it said she had no space to complete or something. I have never owned a windows computer so I am a little rusty on the subject. Looking at her computer she has 58 GB on her C drive and a little under 400 GB on her D drive. She had ~175 GB free on her D drive and almost none on her C drive. Is there any way to take space from the D drive and add it to the C drive? Also, I think its odd that her C:/users folder is only 25 GB. My assumption is most everything she installs and adds to her computer will go into the users folder. If she has a 500 GB HDD, why would 60%+ of the HDD be in use? is windows 7 just that big?

Process Cannot Access / File Because It Is Being By Another Process
May 3, 2012I am getting this error all the time with Windows 7. I open a text file I want to edit, then go to save my changes and I get this error:"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".I have full admin rights, running Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1. From a bit of research I have seen where many others have been experiencing this problem or something similar too. The only "fix" (that doesn't work all the time) is to close explorer.exe and then restart it to "release the handle"? Anyway, this is not acceptable for all the money and time I spent upgrading/configuring this new OS from XP -where I never had this problem- and seriously cuts down my productivity.Has Microsoft even acknowledged this as a bug yet? I can duplicate this scenario the second or third time I try to edit/save/delete a text file and I know that explorer.exe is the problem or a big part of it in any case. I don't want to go back to XP x64 but having to deal with this headache 10-20 times a day is just too much to ask.The file here is a game's map script & has to be saved to a .pk3 and then loaded into the program's root before it can run so i know othing else is running the file. No apps running in taskmngr either.

Nov 9, 2012New dell n7110/win7sp1x64.At startup on new machine from dell, process explorer (procexp64.exe) lists 81 processes running (seems like way too many - compared to xp with maybe 25 at startup). But which processes I can turn off is a question for another day. OK, read carefully, at least 15 processes in PE show " Path: error opening process". PID, CPU, Private Bytes, and working set columns are shown for these "problem" processes, but nothing after that, ie, description, company name etc. For all other listed running processes (with known paths), all info is shown in all columns. The problem processes include some important ones, services, crss, ism, wininit, winlogon, that must to be working for the computer to work, and everything seems to be working properly, and no cpu spikes or other weird stuff is happening. Right clicking properties on these problem processes, properties window pops up as normal, but shows "version: n/a, build: n/a, path: error opening process, no command line, no current directory, autostart location: n/a, Parent: non existent process (708), user: access denied. Again, this info can not be correct since the computer is working. And then, after a few minutes, another window pops up and says PE has stopped working, and closes the program. Now, if this was the whole story, I would go to sysinternals with this, but read on... Task manager running simultaneously with PE lists 83 processes running, more processes than PE, and also ~5 different processes than PE, and PE lists some processes running that TM doesn't list. So PE and TM show different running processes at the same time. How can that be? For the processes that PE shows "error opening", e.g., crss, etc., when I click properties in TM for the same process, sometimes I get the usual/normal pop-up window listing the path, and all the other data as normal, suggesting the process is working properly. But sometimes when I click properties in TM for the processes that PE shows "error opening", I get no pop-up at all, nothing for that process. So, IMO, it's not just a PE glitch, something is actually wrong here. This is a new machine, with PE the only 3rd party installation. I have installed several dell driver updates, but this problem occurred before I installed them. Also, remember PE and TM simultaneously list some different running processes and TM also fails to show paths, etc.

Upgrade From Single HDD To Raid 0?
May 1, 2012I cannot aford to buy SSDs yet and wanted to know how if at all I would clone my HDD to my Raid 0 Dynamic HDDs, windows wont install to them, and casper just overwrites one drive killing the dynamic setup and making a second single HDD clone.
I am using the trial edition of the current version of casper and trying to figure out if buying the full version would make a difference, the original drive is a 1.5TB and the two Dynamic Drive Array are 1TB, all seagates.I have 24GB of ram, a 2GB 550 Ti and a LGA1155 2.8GHz CPU running Windows 7 Ultimate Premium 64bit with a passive 3D LG monitor trying to run five game Accts simultaneously with TS3, Skype, GB3, Spybot and Logitech Services in the back ground
Single Drive To Raid 0 ?
Sep 28, 2009I recently built a computer with only one drive, I was wondering if it is possible to install another one and have them runing on raid 0 or do you suggest another type of raid maybe with 3 drives.
I have an asus mobo p5q3 so I can use Drive Xpert technology but a lot of reviews says that the speed of the drives is split in two when using these 2 sata connection (white and orange).

Cloning From Raid O To Single Ssd
Sep 25, 2011I bought a intel 320 160g gen3. Looking to clone my raid o to it. I may be over simplifying it but can't I just install the SSd in the 3rd Sata spot clone to it from the raid then just change the bios to boot off of the SSd and change it to ahci? Then keep the raid o as is for storage of games and such. I am not putting any important data on the raid o purely a gaming computer. Fresh instal isn't an option btw.

I saw an old Compaq desktop with only 1.5gb ram with Win7 x32 and it was quite zippy(yeah surprised me really! ). It even had Adobe CS3, Cyberlink video editors(Power Director/Producer, Autocad 2005 in it in addition to Avast IS ver6(no firewall/behavioral shield, Comodo firewall(D+ max settings --sandbox disabled), standard Office 2007, PDFXchange Viewer suite etc..
Owner friend just did an experiment with that old Compaq and when it was finished invited us for a couple of beers and showed what he had done.
So me thinking....I might be able to try making that project but with an x64 capable mobo. Although I have not used x64 on it(even after I ditched it) it was zippy in XP x32 ram maxed out with Norton IS 2009 --with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware Pro/ ACAD 2008 / SAS Jump Statistical software / MathCAD / forgot the rest.

Jun 28, 2009So I have a rather unique issue where Crysis, HL2:ep2 and COD:4 crash in single player mode, but never in multiplayer games. There is a pattern, however, which is that the games lock up during loading or saving points. I think it might have something to do with my permissions, but I've tried a number of different options and I'm not sure what I should do next. All of my games are installed to a separate folder called /users/public/games.
