How Long Does Restoring To Earlier Point Usually Take

Apr 13, 2012

After having trouble with broadband issues after upgrading, I thought it could be a settings problem so did a system restore to undo anything I had done. But it has been going for around an hour and a half and is stuck on the initializing stage for ages. Just wondering how long it should take, getting slightly worried? Is there any safe way to get out of it if it is stuck? If so I probably will find a different way around it. Don't want to be breaking my laptop.

Windows 7 Won't Boot After Restoring Back To Earlier Point

Feb 7, 2012

My computer stopped booting and only displays a black screen with a blinking white cursor on start up. I've used a recovery disk to attempt to restore windows back to an earlier point in time. While the restoration completed smoothly I still can't boot. I've also tried the startup repair wizard and it doesn't find any problems.

Restoring Windows 7 Without A Restore Point?

Jan 5, 2013

Before I had my current PC I used a cheap little Acer I got at Best Buy that served me well over the years. It's got some age on it though and it runs very slowly by now. I wiped it clean as best as I could, running antiviruses and ad aware, but it still feels very slow. With my new PC I bought a copy of Windows and I was wondering if I could use this disc to help me restore my Acer to it's original state. I know I can't actually format the drive and use it to install a fresh Win 7 on it, but can I just perform a restore with it?

Long Application Installs, Unable To Create A Restore Point

Feb 7, 2012

My problem is that installing software or running Windows Update takes loads of time (6 minutes longer than usual) while the system otherwise appears to run quickly. Running Win7x64 and Security Essentials.

Upon troubleshooting, I found that my computer cannot make System Restore Points, and it apparently tries to do so for 6 minutes. I deleted all restore points, expanded the space to 100%, and turned off and on system restore, without any success - I cannot create a restore point. My VSS service seems to be running just fine. The specific error is EID: 8193, and the text is: Failed to create restore point (Process = C:Windowssystem32 undll32.exe /d srrstr.dll,ExecuteScheduledSPPCreation; Description = Scheduled Checkpoint; Error = 0x81000101).

What Was The Point In 64 Bit With Only 2GB RAM ?

Dec 1, 2009

As I've read over and over, it seems to take at least 4GB RAM to unleash the power of 64 bit computers. That being said, why do the PC makers install only 2GB and says it's not upgradable. In the future, will I be able to get a 4GB RAM upgrade for it. Had I paid attention when purchasing, I would have noticed.

However, my PC runs fine for me now, but what if I want to install some RAM hog programs? This is almost 2010, not 2000, when if you had 512MB RAM, you had something. But I assume that in the not too distant future, a 4GB option will be available to me.

Restoring Backups Into RC1

Mar 5, 2009

Backup and Restore. Windows Vista's stellar backup and restore features have been streamlined and simplified in Windows 7. Like its predecessor, Windows 7 supports both data backup and image-based system backup, but now the UIs are more segregated.

So, as long as I back up my files using back up and restore then when RC1 comes along I just install then restore and all will be the same as beta was before nuking it? Sounds simple enough what could possibly go wrong that is my question. I am using a usb flash drive for backing up. Will there be a conflict between Fat and NTFS ?

Then I removed it as I did it on the wrong drive, this is where I believe the problems started. I deleted the partition rather than remove the VHD. Now if I try and mount the skinny cursor will appear for a second and nothing will happen.

What Is The Point Of The Registry

Jul 4, 2012

Ive used DOS then Windows all my computing life (which happens also to be all my life) and i recently converted over to primarally using Unix Derivitives. Now Unix derivitives such as linux have a etc directory which stores all the conf and unmarked configuration files while DOS uses interdirectory INI files for configuration... WHile windows uses INI files, appdata directories in each user directory, a program data root directory, configuration directories in the windows/system32 directory AND the registery...... What is the point of it all, the registery is a great single point of failure and its redundant.

802.11n And A New Access Point?

Nov 20, 2011

Just ordered the following router: TP-Link TL-WA901ND Advanced Wireless N Access Point: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories I have a garden shed 30 metres away so hopefully 802.11n should be able to reach. The aim is to use 802.11n so speed is better in my house and my shed. However I heard that 802.11g dongles and computers limit the network speed if you connect them to a router running 802.11n. (Can you do this?)So I might try running 802.11n on the new router (in the main house) and running an ethernet cable down from the new router to the shed where I will have my old Belkin (g) router running 802.11g (as a new access point, if you can do this- if not what are my options)On Amazon, this is the cheapest wire I could find but its not external so will it get damaged quickly if I have it exposed (will burying it underground make a difference?): High Quality 40M CAT5e RJ45 Ethernet Network Fast LAN: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Backing Up & Restoring Windows 7?

Sep 23, 2011

I own an HP G70 laptop which came preinstalled with vista. I received a free copy of Windows 7 (as an .iso image) with a legitimate activation code through MSDNAA. I burned the image to a DVD and install Windows 7 from the burned disk doing the necessary task of formatting the hard drive, etc. etc. Now, before I started installing programs and putting my files back from back up disks, the idea of making a system image right when I first started up Windows went over my head (fail on my part), so if I were to make one now, it would be over a 30GB. Now, if my hard drive were to go bad, can I just restore Windows 7 with the installation disc I made instead of making a system image or recovery partition?

Restoring Change To Original

Jan 20, 2012

I'm new to windows 7 - which I don't like. Also don't like new laptop but I'm stuck with it till I can save for something else. I wanted to change the default font on the desktop. And after looking around found that you can change the font type by going to personalize, colors, advance. You can't change the desktop font but you can change it for different areas such as the start menu and desktop icons. So I changed the font style to Arial Black for both. But I don't like it. It's too large. But now I cannot seem to restore it back to it's original settings. Can someone tell me how to restore the settings back to default?
