As the title says i've seen guides online but they're a bit confusing. I had windows 7 on my computer before. but it got a virus and the usb that I install windows 7 with died on me. So I installed windows XP on my custom machine with a 1gb flash drive using wintoflash. But now i kinda want windows 7 back so I can play games. Is there anyway to do this.
View 6 RepliesI had a sudden hard drive crash and have a system image back up on an external drive.I can't remove and replace the hard drive from the computer because there is about 2 inches of space to get a screwdriver in.I plugged my external drive into a laptop and followed the procedure for attaching a .vhd file.I have two files backed up on the same evening for some reason, 54 GB and 90GB.I couldn't get the 90GB vhd to attach properly until I unchecked the read only tab, it mounted, but I couldn't access any files.I clicked on the file, it asked me to click continue with admin control to permanently give access, it takes a few mins to load...but no files to open.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLooking at buying a new PSU as mine is only 375 watts and am adding new components. With a lot of the newer psu's the fan is on the top of the unit and not the back like mine. As I have no way to mount the psu at the top of the case (my case and board are both btx). I also have no vent holes at the top of the case. So am I able to mount it at the top with the fan blowing down? Will this cause any heat or ventilation issues in the case itself?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a clone computer that I built about a year ago. I put a 90Gb SSD in there and put win 7 on it. I also had 2 other hdd's in there from past computers. I was trying to use them as data disks so my ssd wouldn't get so full. Well since I never wiped them out from past computers they were getting close to full. So I took off all the data I wanted on one of the drives and then formatted that drive and mounted it to my ssd. It was working fine. Then one day I come home and turn on my computer and now it won't boot up. My SSD doesn't show up other than it being called the x: drive with only 31.4 MB on it. No kinda system restore points are shown, and a repair disk doesn't work, or even to try and reinstall doesn't work. It's like my computer isn't recognizing the ssd hard drive as my c: drive and the disk I just formatted is the disk they think is the c: drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have lost the ability to access a mounted drive.Previously, I would mount the drive and it would immediately open, saying it was Q: shared drive...). I have never had a problem before.The drive is from a True crypt encrypted file - I can mount the drive by entering the password to True Crypt, no problem. It mounts, shows up as local disc Q:, but when I click on it, it will not open and I get a message saying 'You don't currently have permission to access this folder'.When I follow the directions to security, and access the properties, I add my user name and tick full control but it the says:An error occured when trying to share Q, access is denied. The shared resource was not created at this time.I have also tried giving permission to 'Everyone' but the same thing happens.(This is complicated by the fact I have been having other problems today.Basically,I used HP Support Assistant to download updates for my laptop, since then I cannot open the devices and printers box - it just hangs and does not populate. I have done system restores, followed instructions from this forum about turning on bluetooth support, printer spooling, resetting explorer, but nothing has worked.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have two Identical hard drives [1.5T WD in external caddys with both USB2 & eSata connections]. Both have been in use since I built computer Dec10. Now I plug them in and their not visible anymore? Their shown as a usb or scsi drive but no assigned drive letter or their "name".Their showing in the Disk manager and I found I had to manually tell it to mount and assign a drive letter[then their useable]. I tried another removable drive that was USB2 & firewire and the same thing. USB2 ,eSata or firewire and their all not visable in explorer. Yet I can plug in a flash drive and I can immediately see it once loaded.Is there a switch in registry or somewhere thats controls this.All these drives were immediately available in file explorer previously? Now I am having to use the DM to manually mount and assign them to read/write to them.

When I inserted CD/DVD in CD-ROM it opened as F:
Obviously I have tried to rename Drive F: to drive E: under computer Management. However, there is no Drive E: under Computer management. Only drive F:, When, I was tried to rename drive F: it didn't allow me to change to E: because it has already taken.
I have also openned regedit and looked under devices to change there. There is no Drive E: only Drive F: I changed and reboot the system and nothing happen. i.e not changed to E:
Is there any way I can Delete the E: drive under my computer so that I can change Drive F: to E: ?
I am getting an error "cannot install" 0x80070714 when I try to install windows 7 into a clean disk and the installation just stops..

I have tried to reinstall and repair the HDD but the disc fails to recognize my HDD (Western Digital Scorpio Black 500 GB). My HDD is Basic, has 3 primary partitions and 1 extended (3 logical). Ubuntu 11.10 can boot fine.

Is there a difference between running repair install from Windows or booting from original disk then selecting upgrade install? Is one or the other preferred? Directions say both attempt to preserve installed programs, but not all drivers, and both require reinstalling all the 60 or so windows updates released after my disk. so no differences there.

When I click on them to install the program I get a message saying Windows is preventing running the file for security reasons. I know the file is free of viruses and want to install it. I am told there is a setting somewhere to turn this security feature "off"--I am the only user of my PC and want this annoyance turned off.
I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a stand-alone PC with a hardwired Internet connection (no router).
I've built a brand new PC and decided that I would like to install windows 7 64 bit on my SSD, I got a disk+key from my university before christmas so that'd i'd be ready once i'd built it.
I built the PC yesterday and realised that I'd left my external DVD drive at my university accommodation, I'm at my parents house for christmas break so that's a few weeks left. I can't really wait that long so I used my parents laptop (which I'm posting from now) to turn the disk into an .iso and use the microsoft USB utility to make a USB stick that i could install from.
However when I tried the install gets to 'installing features' and gives 'windows cannot install required files' error code 0x80070570 I looked the code up on google which sent me to a lot of threads here, so far I've tried:
Taking all but 1 stick of ram out and the graphics card. Reseting the bios to default Installing again without rebooting after error. using cmd to select the right partition
tell me if a re-install from a system image file on my notebook is as good as a clean install from say a retail disk.I can not format all my drive and start a fresh. Can my System image file become glitchy or infected with a virus.?
View 5 Replies View RelatedFirst off this is a newly built computer, all fresh components. aftercleaning/activating the hdd via shift +f10 at Windows 7 setup,(which took me a day to figure out) i was very excited to see my hdd available for Windows 7 installation. as i proceed windows does its thing, after installing its time for the first restart. it restarts right back to the initial windows 7 setup ive done a lot of research, and majority of the problems seem to be the boot priority in bios. so i made sure that it was usb-hdd, then hard drive. (Windows 7 on flash drive for me, no dvd burner available). still the same thing, right back to initial setup. i tried maybe to remove the flash drive during the 10 second countdown to restart, but when it restarts, the windows splash screen comes up and then blue screens and restarts real quick. cant see what the error is on bsodthere have been a couple different start up issues, "windows did not start properly" "select version of windows to start from" (or something to that effect.) but its all the same outcome. windows 7 just wont finish installation
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a re-install of all components following a complete corruption of the boot sector on my drive which could not be fixed with repairs. The last time I installed everything fresh, I had no issues. Between then and now, there have been no hardware changes on my system, but now I am having issues installing the IDT Codecs. I keep getting an error along the following lines: Quote: ExitError: Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again. Running under compatibility mode, and running drivers from both the motherboard CD and the manufacturer website both have the same effect. The CD, when booted, says "This OS not support!" and only contains 32-bit vista codecs. ECS' website download indicates the IDT drivers as being compatible with Windows 7. Both do not work. It is almost as if the hardware "disappeared," despite the fact that I was using the drivers quite successfully till just 2 days ago, when the boot sector went kaput.
Windows has installed its own default set, which do nothing to power the 8mm jacks which I use with my speakers, but instead put sound through the HDMI, which is useless because I use a dedicated graphics card. I have tried uninstalling this codec and re-installing IDT, to no effect. Windows replaces with its own default codec.I have referenced this thread here, but offered solutions do not seem to work for me: Intel IDT Audio Driver will not install

I have fought NT Kernel & System on 3 computers running Win 7 x64 ever since Win 7 has been out. No one yet that I know of has been able to solve the issue. I now need to install Java and can't because of NT Kernel & System stops it. I have tried everything on every forum and sites l find with Google searches. Nothing has worked yet.

I have Administrative rights to the computers only, and network access rights on our network. I keep a number of computers up to date, including various 3rd-party programs (i.e. java, flash, etc), and I currently manually remotely connect to each computer and install the updates to the programs from a network share, then run Windows update, select all the critical updates (as well as all the applicable optional updates), then disconnect and move on to the next one. Needless to say, time quickly adds up.

I get a window saying install was successful, I can open power point or excel but when I try to open word it hangs up at the word logo page. I have done remove programs in control panel, I have used revo uninstall to try to clean the registry. I suspect a corrupted fragment in the registry but don't know how to get at it.
View 1 Replies View Relatedone of my co-workers wants me to get rid of some viruses and install office 2010 home and student on her computer with the key she bought. her computer runs windows 7 64-bit. after backing up her data, i finally ended up doing a factory reinstall from the backup partition. so i downloaded all windows updates and installed antivirus and firewall software. then i downloaded the office 2010 trial and tried to install it. it seems to begin installing without any problems. then a splash screen for powerpoint appears. it says that its "processing" and does that for about 20 minutes and then there is a balloon that pops up saying that office is downloading files. after all that happens, an error message appears that says something like "powerpoint cannot be opened. please try again later or repair this software in the control panel" with no sort of error code. i then tried repairing it from control panel which claims to complete successfully. so i restart and try to install again and the same thing happens all over again. if i try opening word, excel, powerpoint or onenote the splash screen appears and does the same thing that i described powerpoint was doing. ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. i also tried installing the 60 day trial for office 2007 that came preloaded with the computer and then installing office 2010 over it. same thing happened.

I noted down the product-ID from my computers properties because I thought that was the key (right next to it it says change key, so I thought that must be the key).After the new install I realied that it is not equivalent to the key as the ID has less letters.Is there a chance to get the key from the "old" folder that is generated if you install a new windows over an old one?Or is there a chance to get to the key from the product ID? because I have no clue where I put the key..

Downloading and installing a driver from HP site didn't help.Know that I had originally following HP's instructions and attempted install w/o CD and with the printer USB connected during first installation. This failed same as all subsequent installs. I'm also running XP mode on this machine but had not started XP at the time of printer install.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently finished building my computer and brought a copy of windows 7 (home premium) 64bit to go with it. But when I try to install I never get past "collecting information" where I am being asked to "Select A Driver To Install" as a driver for my "DVD Device" is missing (apparently). I assumed that the driver I needed would be on my motherboard driver disk. I clicked the disk and told it to "rescan" and it only said "There's no device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers". When I navigate directly to the sata,raid & ide drivers sometimes I get a: nVidia nForce Serial ATA Controller on the screen but when I click on that it says the same thing after about 10 seconds or tells me it cannot install and I need to get a new driver from my distributor (I have tried the drivers of the Asus website but the same result). What do I do?
