View 5 Replies View RelatedI've made a bunch of desktop shortcuts recently. Now, I would like to move them from the desktop to the task bar like I used to do in XP. Can't do it. Why, and are there any alternatives?
View 8 Replies View RelatedIn Windows XP when you right click the task bar and add a shortcuts toolbar, you are free to have the new toolbar on any edge of the screen away from the taskbar. In Windows 7, I seem to have that shortcut bar stuck on the taskbar. How can I move the shortcut bar to the top of the screen and keep the taskbar at the bottom of the screen
View 10 Replies View Relatedi was really hesitant since XP worked what i at least THOUGHT was well. But Windows 7 is so much quicker and seamless. Anyways, 1st question is on XP i would drag a shortcut to the taskbar and it would then be usable and work as the original shortcut did. With windows 7 it doesn't wok.
For example, i have a text file that i keep on another drive and i put a shortcut to it on my taskbar. In XP i'd click it and the file would pop up as you'd expect. On windows 7 if i drag that text file to the taskbar, when i click the resulting shortcut instead of the file i just get a new empty notepad.
If i right click it (i THINK it was by R/clicking) then a list of various notepad files i've viewed pops up and i can choose it from there. But i just want it to be a shortcut to the particular txt file. Is there a way? second, i see shortcuts don't have the file's pathway or "address" if you will in them. I miss that for a number of reasons such as being able to tell where the file it's pointing to is, or adding switches in the target line etc etc. Is there a way to make them show the pathway?
I've read that the shortcut to access items in your task bar is windowkey + (1-9) depending on the placement of the app from the start button. I've tried it, but no luck. When I press the combination, nothing happens. Does this work for anybody else? Am I doing something wrong? I love the idea of this working, but it does me no good until I get some kinda success with it.
View 6 Replies View Relatedhow do I add gaps between pinned shortcuts like the one shown here:
View 1 Replies View RelatedAlways dragged a copy of Computer and Control Panel icons to the taskbar at the bottom in Vista. 7 doesn't seem to let you do that. It just says pinned but they aren't there. Also notice that some of the programs I have reinstalled after installing 7 at the ned ask if you want to add a shortcut to the desktop or quick launch taskbar then don't appear there either.
View 2 Replies View RelatedLike the title says, most of the programs listed in the start menu are gone. They can still be accessed from other places, like the task bar and shortcuts, at least most of them. I would show a picture, but I can't access Paint. The only things that remain are Mahjong, Chess, Solitaire, Purble Place and Magnifier in the main menu and under All Programs: IE, some accessories (not including paint), McAfee, Google Chrome, The startup folder, and WinRAR.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I start Windows, Explorer always starts on it's own. The view downloads box pops up, showing this:
[URL] And asks me whether to open it or save it.
Now all of the icons on my desktop and the start menu are Explorer shortcuts although they are completely different programs.
Is there a method/hack or a 3rd-party program that allows the user to hide the taskbar by dragging its top border line downwards, after un-locking the taskbar? I remember I could do that under Win9x.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo about a month ago I restarted my computer and when it came back on all my programs pinned to my task bar and everything that was in my start menu was gone. From there I could not unlock the taskbar and nothing would pin in either the start menu or taskbar. I researched everywhere about it. I tried unlocking the taskbar in properties and registry with no luck. I finally found some posts about how my user profile was corrupt and from there I went on and made a new profile and copied everything and BOOM it all worked fine now. Well today it happened AGAIN! I restarted my computer and everything disappeared. So I think it is still a corrupt profile, but this is the second time it has happened.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a client that has laptop with windows 7 Pro. He had a faulty network card, so I have added a new, usb network card. That said, He can not pin anything to taskbar or start menu. I cleared both folders of shortcuts(567 of them) but to no avail. He also has no options under his desktop Context menu for New. He is also using a roaming profile, of which I will disable next time I am there. I have a feeling that might be the issue. I did scour the internet trying all the usual suggestions, but do vaguely remember something about an entry in cache somewhere that if it is too big or corrupt, it could cause this behavior. I am unable to find that post anywhere now.I mention the network card because one post had taskbar issues until he disabled his faulty network card. I have disabled the faulty network card.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a program installed called Spiral Knights, and I pinned the icon onto the taskbar so I could quickly launch it. When I was done playing it for good, I uninstalled it and it looked like the icon was off the taskbar, but it wasn't. When I tried to put another program onto the taskbar, called minecraft_server.jar, it pinned to the Spiral Knights icon, even though SK isn't installed anymore. Wherever I try to put the minecraft_server.jar onto the taskbar, the SK program is still there, and it says if I want to pin the minecraft_server.jar onto SK.

View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday, the task bar and Start button mysteriously disappeared.I've also found that the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" windowdoesn't come up. There are two places to click on in Control Panelthat should bring up this window, but it doesn't. The Control Panelborder changes color as if something is starting to happen, but thennothing happens, possibly indicating that some program starts to runbut then finds something wrong and exits. I didn't see anythinginteresting in the error logs. The desktop icons appear normally. The problem exists only when logging onto my son's account. When Ilog on as administrator, the task bar and Start button appearnormally. The usual tricks don't work: Ctrl+ESC, or bringing up Task Manager andtrying to rerun explorer.exe. I tried sfc to check for corruptedfiles, but none turned up. I ran an AVG scan and it did find one fileit considered a threat, which it removed, but that didn't solve theproblem.
I found a web site that referred to the registrykeyHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorerwhich has a NoSetTaskbar value that can be used to disable the"Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window. On the administratorlogin, the Explorer subkey is there all right, but doesn't haveNoSetTaskbar. (It does have NoDriveTypeAutoRun.) But when I log ontomy son's account, the Policies key had no subkeys at all. I triedadding an Explorer subkey without adding any values, but this didn'tsolve the problem. I haven't yet tried adding a NoDriveTypeAutoRunvalue, but since this seems to pertain to AutoPlay it didn't seemrelevant to this problem.Any thoughts as to what might be going on or what might fix it?

View 9 Replies View Relatedi am reading a lot a from people not upgrading to a new build because they don't have a spare DVD or a 4 Gb USB stick handy.
Well you don't need all that.
Simply use your favorite mounting tool (i use Magic Disk), mount the image, start the upgrade process.
You might see an message about Magic Disk having to be reinstalled, dont worry, and continue.
You'll see, upgrade works just fine without wasting DVDs or time coping files to a USB drive.

Is it possible to do an upgrade from 7068 x74 to 7077 x64 from a USB stick?
Do I extract the iso file to the usb stick and then go from there?
My wife keeps most of her data on a USB stick so that she can easily move it around her 3 laptops (in 3 different locations). This morning, the stick was dead. It did not say a piep, no power, nothing. Despite my constant preaching about the importance of backups, she had, of course, not backed it up for a long time.Well, I tried an old trick that may possibly help others. I put it into the fridge for a couple of hours. And low and behold, after that I was able to read the thing and copy all her files. Now she is a happy camper again. So if you have the same problem one day, try the fridge. No guarantee that it will work for you, but it did in this case. I have used the same trick with dead disks with some success.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a Kingston 16GB DataTraveler SE6 USB 2.0 stick. It works without fault in my 2 laptops running Windows 7 (x32), it also works perfectly in my car stereo & Android tablet. It is formatted as FAT.However on my desktop, running Windows 7 (x64) 9 times out of 10 I will get a message saying it needs formatting. 1 out of 10 it will work fine. Even if i try and format it it fails to format, both quick format and regular format. So i've concluded that the USB stick is fine and it must be an issue on my desktop. The desktop is a fairly new build, 3 months old and I'm experiencing no other issues with it. I use a number of other external drives on usb, mini memory sticks via readers and the like without issue. All drivers in Device Manager are reporting fine. i don't unfortunately have another USB stick to test.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter I forced a shutdown on my computer recently, and rebooted it, all of my folders have gotten all messed up.Before that, folders with lots of pictures used to show icons by default etc., and the file organization was completely different. Now, I can reorganize everything as much as I want, but when I close the folder and open it back up again, nothing has sticked. I might as well not have done it at all. What should I do?I managed to fix it myself by deleting explorer.exe and copying a new one from the backup. The problem seems to persist every time I reboot the computer though. I wonder what's up. For now I'll have to copy and paste the exe every time I boot it up I guess.

I know the .ani & .cur files work for me as i had them working perfectly up until i clean installed onto my primary partition on my primary hard drive just the other day. The 'Mac' cursors are in %windir%Cursors btw.
If i select 'Windows Aero (system scheme)' cursor scheme, then re-select the Mac scheme and then Apply, the cursors of course change and stay throughout the session. After a reboot they revert to the default scheme however.
I've tried toggling the "Allow themes to change the mouse pointers" with a reboot.
Saving my current theme, changing the theme, switching back and rebooting.
And finally saving the theme for sharing (.themepack) changing to a different theme, applying the .themepack and rebooting.
All results are the same.
I have a suspicion it's a small reg setting (maybe a toggle setting, (value from 0-1)) but i'm not sure where it'd be and can't find anything relevant in the control panel.
