Pinning Shortcuts To The Taskbar?
Aug 12, 2011I've made a bunch of desktop shortcuts recently. Now, I would like to move them from the desktop to the task bar like I used to do in XP. Can't do it. Why, and are there any alternatives?

View 8 RepliesWindows 7 adding network drive shortcuts to taskar. I'm searching a similar way with XP Quick launch bar to add some network folders (which aren't mapped as drives) to taskbar.hen dragging to taskbar, there opens a window (Pinned/Recent/) which I understand means shortcut has now pinned. Now there are listed already several network shortcuts, but still these are not visible on taskbar. Where do these go and how to make these visible? It looks like it's a separate toolbar, where I can open already previously dragged shortcuts, but how to open it without dragging a new network shortcut to taskbar? When dragging an application to tasbar, there isn't such a window and application shortcut is added without any question asked. It seems like Windows 7 doesn't support dragging and creating network shares shortcuts directly onto taskabar or did I missed something essential?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSomething weird has happened to my taskbar. I have a few programs pinned there and everything was okay. Then today I unpinned Firefox from there because I wanted to change the icon I was using. After deciding I didn't like it I tried to go back to the one I was using but when I pinned it back to the task bar this problem occurred:As you can see when I click on the silver Firefox icon, it opens up a new firefox icon (default icon) in a separate place, taking up unnecessary space. I can't figure out how to make it go back to the way it was where everything stayed within the silver icon.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to pin a document to the taskbar. However, what gets pinned is the program that opens the document and not the document itself, so instead of just clicking on the icon to open the document I need to right click on it and then select the document.
Is there any way to pin the document itself so that clicking on the icon will open the document?
Why is it that some shortcuts that I have on my desktop (shortcuts that I made) will not, while othr will, stick in the taskbar?
View 9 Replies View RelatedIn Windows XP when you right click the task bar and add a shortcuts toolbar, you are free to have the new toolbar on any edge of the screen away from the taskbar. View 10 Replies View Relatedi was really hesitant since XP worked what i at least THOUGHT was well. But Windows 7 is so much quicker and seamless. Anyways, 1st question is on XP i would drag a shortcut to the taskbar and it would then be usable and work as the original shortcut did. With windows 7 it doesn't wok.
For example, i have a text file that i keep on another drive and i put a shortcut to it on my taskbar. In XP i'd click it and the file would pop up as you'd expect. On windows 7 if i drag that text file to the taskbar, when i click the resulting shortcut instead of the file i just get a new empty notepad.
If i right click it (i THINK it was by R/clicking) then a list of various notepad files i've viewed pops up and i can choose it from there. But i just want it to be a shortcut to the particular txt file. Is there a way? second, i see shortcuts don't have the file's pathway or "address" if you will in them. I miss that for a number of reasons such as being able to tell where the file it's pointing to is, or adding switches in the target line etc etc. Is there a way to make them show the pathway?
I've read that the shortcut to access items in your task bar is windowkey + (1-9) depending on the placement of the app from the start button. I've tried it, but no luck. When I press the combination, nothing happens. Does this work for anybody else? Am I doing something wrong? I love the idea of this working, but it does me no good until I get some kinda success with it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAlways dragged a copy of Computer and Control Panel icons to the taskbar at the bottom in Vista. 7 doesn't seem to let you do that. It just says pinned but they aren't there. Also notice that some of the programs I have reinstalled after installing 7 at the ned ask if you want to add a shortcut to the desktop or quick launch taskbar then don't appear there either.
View 2 Replies View RelatedLike the title says, most of the programs listed in the start menu are gone. They can still be accessed from other places, like the task bar and shortcuts, at least most of them. I would show a picture, but I can't access Paint. The only things that remain are Mahjong, Chess, Solitaire, Purble Place and Magnifier in the main menu and under All Programs: IE, some accessories (not including paint), McAfee, Google Chrome, The startup folder, and WinRAR.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Win 7 64 and I have created a vbscript file to launch Windows Media Centre - the script tweaks the registry settings for WMC window size and position (so it always opens in the same position and size on my second montor) before shelling to WMC (which also includes command line swtches to open in the TV Guide). The trouble is that I have created a shortcut to the vbscript file and put it into the start menu - but when I right click on it, it doesn't give me the option to pin it to the task bar. If, however, I edit target for the original WMC shortcut to point to the vbscript then I can pin it. Interestingly, when I do it this way, the Jump List on the pinned shortcut on the taskbar still retains the WMC Jump List which is great(although the Jump List doesn't appear to work on the Start Menu shortcut). So the question is - is there any detailed information that someone can point me at to help me understand how the shortcuts, pinning and jump lists work? Specific questions are:- How does Win 7 tell the difference between the short cut I created for the vbscript file and the "standard" shortcut for WMC?- Why does the pin-to option not appear on the vbscript shortcut?- Can I programmatically, or manually, add shortcuts to the "pinned" area on the task bar?- What controls the Jump List and can it be customised?

View 5 Replies View RelatedOkay, so I was having some issues before with pinning network files to the explorer item on the taskbar.
I can now replicate the bug happening. I want to see if it's just my setup or windows 7, so I'd be much obliged if someone can test this out for me as well.
First Scenario
1) First map a network drive.
2) Pin it to the explorer item on the taskbar by dragging it there.
3) Open up the destiation through the jump list.
4) navigate a couple of folders down and open any file.
What you should get is the network drive is no longer pinned. However, the folder where the file you just opened resided has taken it's place.
Second Scenario
1) Navigate to a network destination through windows explorer (not a mapped drive)
2) Pin a Folder from that network destination by gragging to the taskbar.
3) Pin another folder than resides inside a folder in step 2
Result: Folder pinned in step 2 is replaced by folder pinned in step 3
When I start Windows, Explorer always starts on it's own. The view downloads box pops up, showing this:
[URL] And asks me whether to open it or save it.
Now all of the icons on my desktop and the start menu are Explorer shortcuts although they are completely different programs.
Is there a method/hack or a 3rd-party program that allows the user to hide the taskbar by dragging its top border line downwards, after un-locking the taskbar? I remember I could do that under Win9x.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo about a month ago I restarted my computer and when it came back on all my programs pinned to my task bar and everything that was in my start menu was gone. From there I could not unlock the taskbar and nothing would pin in either the start menu or taskbar. I researched everywhere about it. I tried unlocking the taskbar in properties and registry with no luck. I finally found some posts about how my user profile was corrupt and from there I went on and made a new profile and copied everything and BOOM it all worked fine now. Well today it happened AGAIN! I restarted my computer and everything disappeared. So I think it is still a corrupt profile, but this is the second time it has happened.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a client that has laptop with windows 7 Pro. He had a faulty network card, so I have added a new, usb network card. That said, He can not pin anything to taskbar or start menu. I cleared both folders of shortcuts(567 of them) but to no avail. He also has no options under his desktop Context menu for New. He is also using a roaming profile, of which I will disable next time I am there. I have a feeling that might be the issue. I did scour the internet trying all the usual suggestions, but do vaguely remember something about an entry in cache somewhere that if it is too big or corrupt, it could cause this behavior. I am unable to find that post anywhere now.I mention the network card because one post had taskbar issues until he disabled his faulty network card. I have disabled the faulty network card.

When I was done playing it for good, I uninstalled it and it looked like the icon was off the taskbar, but it wasn't. When I tried to put another program onto the taskbar, called minecraft_server.jar, it pinned to the Spiral Knights icon, even though SK isn't installed anymore. Wherever I try to put the minecraft_server.jar onto the taskbar, the SK program is still there, and it says if I want to pin the minecraft_server.jar onto SK.

View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday, the task bar and Start button mysteriously disappeared.I've also found that the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" windowdoesn't come up. There are two places to click on in Control Panelthat should bring up this window, but it doesn't. The Control Panelborder changes color as if something is starting to happen, but thennothing happens, possibly indicating that some program starts to runbut then finds something wrong and exits. I didn't see anythinginteresting in the error logs. The desktop icons appear normally. The problem exists only when logging onto my son's account. When Ilog on as administrator, the task bar and Start button appearnormally. The usual tricks don't work: Ctrl+ESC, or bringing up Task Manager andtrying to rerun explorer.exe. I tried sfc to check for corruptedfiles, but none turned up. I ran an AVG scan and it did find one fileit considered a threat, which it removed, but that didn't solve theproblem.
I found a web site that referred to the registrykeyHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorerwhich has a NoSetTaskbar value that can be used to disable the"Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window. On the administratorlogin, the Explorer subkey is there all right, but doesn't haveNoSetTaskbar. (It does have NoDriveTypeAutoRun.) But when I log ontomy son's account, the Policies key had no subkeys at all. I triedadding an Explorer subkey without adding any values, but this didn'tsolve the problem. I haven't yet tried adding a NoDriveTypeAutoRunvalue, but since this seems to pertain to AutoPlay it didn't seemrelevant to this problem.Any thoughts as to what might be going on or what might fix it?
I have just gotten a new computer with Windows 7 Pro installed on it, and am going through the learning curve. I have two questions with respect to shortcuts that are created -- usually via the drag & "create shortcut here" option.
1. Is there a way to make the arrow smaller, or if not then is there a way to make it disappear? It is taking up about 1/4 of the icon picture.
2. Is there a way to not have the words "shortcut to" appended. I can always do a rename, but that is a bit of a bother.
All the shortcuts on my desktop are now opened by the windows photo and fax viewer.all has got 'lnk' to it. i tried to restore to previous state but i did not work out. if i need to open any program, i will have to go all the way to the program files to locate them before i could launch them.

After it finished, all my desktop shortcuts were on the secondary monitor (left), and I can't move them to the primary monitor (right).
I can open programs and move them to either screen, and the taskbar will work on either screen. Gadgets work fine on either screen.
I can't create a shortcut or a new file on the primary monitor on the right.
I was using UltraMon 3.0.4, and tried uninstalling it, and installing an older version, with no improvement.
If I make the left screen primary, then I can create & move shortcuts to either screen. However, using UltraMon puts the taskbar & extended taskbar on the same (left) screen.
Booting into Vista 32 or Windows 7 64 shows both screens working ok.

Her Norton had run out so she was going to uninstall it and reinstall the version that came on CD so she was unprotected for a few days. but when she ran the new Norton and did a scan, all it showed bad were the cookies. We also downloaded Ad-Aware and scanned for spy junk and it showed nothing. The PC is an HP but I don't know more right now. It is only 2 months old. I am going to her house in the morning to see what I can find out but if you, saint19, see this tonight, can you give me any pointers on where to look? Her desktop image went away along with all the shortcuts except Recycle Bin, MS Word and Excel.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI thought this list of keyboard shortcuts from "The Lazy Admin" might be useful I didn't know half of these.
WIN + T – With the new taskbar and the way apps dock there, this shortcut will open the preview of each of the apps running in the taskbar. No need to hover the mouse over the taskbar any more!
Ctrl + Shift – This shortcut will launch any application that is docked on your taskbar with elevated privileges.
WIN + Space – This shortcut will make all windows transparent and allow you to see the desktop. Release it and return back to the current window.
WIN + P – Need to connect to a projector or external monitor on your notebook? This shortcut will do the trick! You can also use WIN + X to open the Mobility Center and do it from there too.
WIN + Home – Got a cluttered desktop? This shortcut will minimize all the windows on the desktop with the exception of the active one.
WIN + Arrows – There are a load of shortcuts that utilize the arrows. WIN + Right Arrow will dock the windows to the right while WIN + Left Arrow will dock it to the left. WIN + Up Arrow will maximize a window while WIN + Down Arrow will minimize it.
WIN + Shift + Arrow – In conjunction with #6 once you have the windows docked you can move them to other monitors in a multi monitor display. WIN + Shift + Right Arrow will move it to the right. I think you can figure out what the Left Arrow does!
WIN + +/- - OK I know I said seven but this one is cool too. WIN + + will zoom in and WIN + - zooms out!

I have been googling this for multiple hours and the only thing i have found is to restore them using a folder called 'smtmp', well this laptop doesn't have a folder by that name anywhere on the laptop. Also i have ran Unhide.exe.
