Force Windows To Load All Contents Of Directory At Startup?
Sep 26, 2012
I have album artwork displayed for every album/directory in my music directory (D:Music) by using a folder.ico and a desktop.ini file. This method was used as a work-around to fix the deficiency in Windows Vista and 7 to no longer display front-facing album covers using the folder.jpg file. This work-around looks fantastic and actually looks better than XP because it's borderless. It also has the advantage of staying loaded into memory, which I have plenty of, until I restart the computer, unlike the use of folder.jpg, which has to be reloaded every time the directory is opened and scrolled. However, when I first open my music folder, it has to load all the artwork and I have to manually scroll through the entire directory until all of the folder.ico files are read.I have a very large library and this takes some time. I can set D:Music to open at startup, and it will read the folder.ico files for the visible albums/directories, but then I still have to manually scroll after that.Is there any way to force Windows to load the folder.ico files for every folder in my D:Music directory at startup, with no intervention from me? When I go to open or scroll through the music directory, all of my album artwork has already been pre-loaded into memory and thus it is a seamless flow of album artwork with no waiting.

I love to keep track of directory contents by printing them out. Various reasons.
By going to a command prompt, then to the directory of choice, I can send the results of the "dir" command to "prn" with the ">" (greater than) sign.
There are all sorts of switches to affect the way the printout looks. The ones I like are /b followed by /o:gn which gives you names only, directories first.
I run into a problem when there are hidden and system files in a folder. The switch for them is /a:hs.
No matter how I present the switches, all of the above, I cannot get the dir command to print everything. I get either all of the non-h&s, or I get just the h&s.

I have a Sony Viao with Win 7 Home Premium and I just deleted some form of Trojan with MS Security Essentials and then I ran windows updates before I restarted the machine. Windows update installed some security updates along with Service pack 1 and IE9. Now the computer will not load Windows. It goes straight to the startup repair but cannot fix the problem. There is not restore points other that when SP1 was installed and I gives an error every time I try to restore it. I can get to a command prompt and I have tried to run sfc /scannow but it tells me there is a system repair pending which requires a reboot and then does nothing. I also tried check disk(just as a last chance) but that didn't do anything.

I have an acer aspire 5742 laptop. I was running windows 7. I do not have a disc as it was already loaded onto laptop that was a gift. Machine was running ok, it would overheat from time to time as i think the battery was on its way out, anyway thats not the problem. 2 days ago it switched itself off, when i tried to reboot i got a screen saying windows failed to start with options to -launch startup repair or - start windows normally. when i choose start startup repair it says in grey at bottom of screen loading windows files then it goes to a black screen and freezes. If i choose start windows normally it says starting windows and logo appears, then it just crashes.

I tried turning on my computer today and it gets stuck at the "Starting Windows" logo. It just hangs there indefinitely (usually only takes a couple seconds) and doesn't load. I then tried startup repair, and that just takes me to a black screen. After that, I tried putting in my Windows 7 boot disc to do a clean install, told the BIOS to boot to CD/DVD drive. It tells me to press a key, I do. I get "Windows is loading files" and then it goes back to "Starting Windows" forever, yet again. This happened so suddenly, it was working fine just hours before this.

I recently bought Windows 7. Sometimes when I start my computer, the USB will not work at the login screen. No keyboard or mouse works. If I get past the login, windows finds all my external hd's and starts to scan them. I think this is a problem with the USB.

Fujitsu Siemens laptop, Intel dual core, 1.75g ram. When I restart it, fails to load and doesn't even show to startup screen, nothing, just a black screen. so, I must shut it down from the power button. And if I start it rapidly, it's possible to not start from the first try. I made a fresh install of the OS, nothing. Can this be a hardware problem?

I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal. First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly. After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects.

I disassembled my computer, carried it in my luggage and reassembled it. The only thing changed is the case. Since reassembling it, Windows (7 ultimate 64-bit) will not recognize either of my 2 DVD-RW's. At boot, my bios offers them as boot options, and with the Win7 disk in the one, it will boot from it if selected. However, once within the Win7 environment...nothing. Not even any yellow exclamation marks in device driver. I have tried to force installation, tried installing a legacy device, everything I can think of. how I can force Win7 to search for and find my DVD-RW's?

(although nothing is running that I know of). It only started doing this this week. Once I click on the "force shut down" button, my PC shuts off fine, but I would like to know what the "force shut down" is all about.

I just got a new PC with Windows 7 installed and have run into this issue twice, both times with a particular folder - let's call it "UsefulDocuments2" (the actual folder name DOES have a 2 at the end, but there is no folder called "UsefulDocuments").
Sometimes, when I try to view the folder contents using Explorer or through Windows Live Mail (in an attempt to include a file in the folder as an attachment), I can't view the contents of the folder. When I access the folder, it has the proper path listed in the address bar of the window and displays the number of items (171) in the lower left corner. However, the status bar just says "Searching for items..." except I can occasionally see it flicker to say "171 items."
While it is "Searching for items..." (which is 99.9% of the time), it doesn't display any of the contents of the folder. The scrollbar on the side of the window constantly flickers - it's recognizing that there are 171 items in the folder and that the scrollbar is necessary, but then keeps re-searching the folder contents, I guess.
Weirdly, if I change the folder name to, say, "UsefulDocuments" it works fine (at least right now). If I then change it back to "UsefulDocuments2" it reverts to its old behavior. Also, if I open a file in it in Word (2010), I can view and access the contents of the folder without any problem at all.
Obviously, I can just change the folder name, but don't really want to for organizational reasons, and also am just curious as to what's going on and how to fix it should it happen to other folders, etc.

I'm using 7057. Not sure when this problem started as I don't use CDs or DVDs that much. The drive works fine, ImgBurn works fine, all other programs seem to see the files on a disk fine, they just don't show up in Windows Explorer. I click on the drive in the "Navigation Pane" and nothing happens. I've tried two good DVD drives, uninstalled ImgBurn and PowerISO, still nothing.

I actually don't have a problem with drivers, but in how windows detects hardware and finds appropiate drivers. Because sometimes I have many computers at a time to fix, I wondered if there was a way in which windows 7 can be forced to update every installed driver in the system at once, this because when windows 7 is installed, it installs outdated (but working) drivers for some devices. Generally, I don't install drivers by double clicking them, but rather by extracting them (exe's) and then making windows find them, I do this because doing so, prevents most of the time, the installation of unwanted applications. Now, I know I can update each driver individually using the device manager, but this could take very long depending on the machine. I would like windows (on a clean installation), to uninstall ALL of the drivers, including chipset, video, audio, etc, and then look for them in a specific folder, say C:ew_drivers (where all new extracted drivers are).
