Was experimenting and have successfully moved (or redirected) the My Documents folder from drive C to D. Now when I try and move it back I get the message Folder Redirection Failed... Access is denied. I am logged on as a user with Admin privileges. This is probably irrelevant, but I do not log on with a password.
View 6 RepliesI am using Windows 7 - Home Premium 64bit. There is only one user on this machine which is Administrator and this computer is not connected with any networks. I am trying to move all of User's folders to D: drive. I have successfully moved, My Pictures, My Documents, My Videos, Contacts and other folders but when I try to move "Desktop" folder, it gives me an error message at the end of the operation (after coping all the data to the new location) that "Folder Redirection Failed", "Operation was cancelled by the user". I have tried to change the location several times for this Desktop folder but every time I do it, I get this error message.
Now situation is... Data from my Desktop is present in its default location but also copied to D:UsersMyNameDesktop folder. Means, exactly the same data is placed on two different locations but default Desktop location is still at C: drive. Why I am unable to change my Desktop location? I am trying to change the location by right clicking on Desktop folder in User's folder, then Properties and then Location tab. It's exactly the same way by which I moved all of my other User's folders successfully.
I am running Active Directory on Server 2008 and redirecting My Documents, Favorites, and Desktop folders to the server. When the PCs go a screen saver and the user needs to login they loose connection to their Desktop icons. Their My Documents, Favorites and all mapped drives all work fine, they only loose Desktop icons. The only way to restore connection is to restart the PC. I have disabled the setting on the network card to allow Windows to put it to sleep, and it seemed to help for about a week. The strange part about this issue is, it doesn't affect all users only about 6.

Issue: Bluescreen when accessing redirected "my documents" folder.
Involved machines:
Windows 2008 server environment. The fileserver runs on a perc 5/i in RAID 5. The disc is configured as GPT as it is larger then 2 TB. Folder redirection is configured by a GPO towards the fileserver. Domain is running on windows 2008 functional level.
Test PC running Windows 7.
Cause & solution:
Well, basicly I could reproduce the bluescreen occuring each time I worked with files. I configured the initial rights on the fileserver according to this guide: How To Configure Folder Redirection (I keep forgetting what rights are needed "DUH")
What did happen to cause this issue? Well, I wanted to place data in the redirected folders to play around with. As I was currently working on the FS at that time I wanted to do it directly. Access was denied on the "my documents" of the test folder. So I took ownership... Apperantly the folders created by "folder redirection" differ quite a bit from 2003. I lost all rights on the folder. No biggie I figured, I just add the user to the ACL with full rights.
This is the moment I started to get the bluescreens on the Windows 7 test machine. And after a while it dawned upon me that the change of rights must have been the cause of it!
I disabled redirection of the my docs in the GPO, made sure the client machine was logged off, renamed the folder by adding .old, enabled the redirection again and logged in on the client machine.
I understand that taking ownership of the folder f*cked up the rights & windows needs these rights to work properly. It just seems that getting a bluescreen is a bit over the top.
I'm running Win 7 64 bit in a Windows 2003 R2 domain.In the last 2 weeks I've gotten several blue screens and am not sure how to correct the problems.I've run sfc /scannow and no problems were found.I'm also seeing Service Control Manager errors in the Events Viewer and possible solutions from other posts on the Internet have not worked.Folder redirection of the My Documents folder is setup in Group Policy yet there are errors that show folders like My Videos can not be created located on the file storage server and my account has full permissions.Lastly, I am experiencing errors with Outlook 2010.I've run the MiniToolBox utility and have attached the results.txt file so you can see these errors.

After a couple of attempts to restore to the original location I tried restoring the AppData folder only to another folder on the C drive. Although the Restore facility confirmed Appdata restored and the properties showed the new folder to be of considerable size, it appeared to contain no data. View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to have this searchable in case others have come across the same problem. This problem occurs when you try to install certain programs. I tried all of these fixes, but I'll label the one that worked for me. (I will only show the fixes I tried which have been confirmed to work for others). My operating system is a Windows 7 64 bit.
1. Create a new administrator account, log on to that account, then run the installer from that account. (this is what worked for me. )(Simply running the installer as an administrator account from my normal account did not work)
2. Go to the command prompt (by clicking the windows logo/start and typing cmd ),then type regedit inside the command prompt and press enter. Browse to the location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Microsoft --> Windows -->Current Version --> Explorer --> User Shell Folders. Click to highlight the Recent key, then click File, export. Save the file (but remember where you saved it to). Go back to the registry editer, right click Recent and click delete. Restart your computer and try the installation again. (please take care when you're in the registry editer, deleting the wrong thing could lead to:.(If this one did not work, go back to User Shell Folders inside the registry editor, click a blank area inside the right pane, click File, import, and choose the Recent key you exported earlier. This will put the key back in your registry.)
3. Boot up in safe mode with networking ( to do this, start up your computer and press F8 like a madman before the windows logo appears on the screen.) and try to run the installer as an administrator.
During multiple file coping(file transferring) from one folders to other folders while minimizing all the folder at the time, check the status in taskbar, it showing all folder as file coping folder. is it expected in aero themas or its issue.

Tried take ownership, cacls, safe mode, tools etc.
Need to to really move it, because the 2TB disc had no room to do a copy. It's really a FAT/NTFS table issue.

It's not MY DOCUMENTS, but rather, the Libraries-Documents folder (versus the my documents under my user profile/name).The folder is FULL of garbage.This includes things that appear to be "temp files" (but with valid file types such as jpg, mp3)also in there doc files, png, tdb, diz, ebc, and others I don't even recognize. The problem here is that this folder falls somewhere in the middle of the rest of the folders when I sort alphabetically (which isn't very pretty). tried everything to delete this folder on my external HDD, yet nothing works. Every time I try to delete it says "You require permission to change this folder." Changed the permissions. Nothing. Does anyone know if one could designate a user folder location such as E:Data instead of using the users name and being a subdirectory of "Users". I am the ONLY one on my computer - and it would seem much easier to look to the top folder in the E drive than clicking thru E:, users, name, documents, project. I fully realize that I can set up shortcuts, but when you are in an application that wants to place a file somewhere else and presents you with an explorer windows it is a pain. The only method I thought of is using redirection with symbolic links.
