I can't seem to turn on my File and Printer Sharing and Network Discovery options from the Network and Sharing Center. I go to the sharing options, and click turn on to both of them. Then after I confirm by pressing save, if I come back they've returned to their previous turned off position.
I tried a few things and have searched online for the last hour or so, but I'm willing to follow directions if someone is more used to this problem than I am. I also searched these forums but sadly the word "on" is one of the main points of this and words shorter than 3 letters are rejected from the search engine, so the results weren't really related.
Cannot Turn On Network Discovery And File Sharing
Aug 20, 2009I have 2 PCs connected to a Win 2003 Ent server domain (not R2 - this is the original 2003 version), although the Domain was originally setup using Win2K My laptop, which connects wirelessly has network discovery turned on and no probs. My desktop (Wkstn1), however, does not allow me to turn on the service. I'm on a domain not homegroup.
Both Win 7 installs were upgrades on Vista Ultimate, and both PCs have pretty much the same software. I'm using ESET Nod32 v4 on both (server has no AV). I was at one time able to turn on Network discovery (share drives and printers on the domain). Now no go.
The server has DHCP and DNS enabled on a static IP, and AD of course. I reserved IPs for the 2 PCs on the network. The gateway is a hardware firewall router (Watchguard) which also has a static IP.
I've tried resetting the Wkstn1 account (and resubmitting credentials) to see if that improves things but no. Group policy updates fine.
Any ideas?
Can't Turn On Network Discovery And File Sharing
Dec 1, 2012On my desktop computer, when I go to Network & Sharing Center and select Change Advanced Sharing Settings, Turn off network discovery and Turn off file and print sharing are both selected. I click on the Turn on options and then click on Save Changes but when I come back to this screen, they're turned off again. I can't print from my (wireless) laptop now.

Dec 19, 2012In my office there are 2 desktop (Windows 7 & XP) computers and 2 laptops (Windows 7 & XP). These computers are connected to BSNL wifi router (ADSL) which has intermittent internet connection. I have also installed 2 printers on the desktop computers, one being deskjet (Windows 7) and the other laser (XP comp). On the XP system (desktop) i've enabled printer sharing.
PS: desktop computers are connected by RJ-45 and laptops by WiFi Issue :
successfully configured other PC for printer sharing. Now the issue is as i said earlier due to intermittent internet connection remaining 3 computers are unable to print laser printer when the net is down however it works fine.
What can be done..?? Also on the XP sys (desktop) i would also like to enable a particular folder to be shared.

Jul 21, 2011Okay I have two computers. They're both running win7 64bit home premium. The laptop seems fine and can file and printer share. So basically I'm trying to share my printer on my desktop pc connected through the usb as so I can print from my laptop.They seem to connect to each other and both are in the same homegroup. But I keep getting the can't connect to printer error. But it works if I do it the opposite way which is connect printer to laptop and network the printer through desktop. So it seems to be the settings or something on my desktop PC.The only folder I can access over the network on my desktop PC is the public folder. All the other folders say "access is denied". So there seems to be going on with my permissions,access,etc from my desktop PC. I already selected the folders I want to share and selected share with homegroup(read/write).

Feb 1, 2011I have a Windows 7 Pro PC with Local Printer Installed & a Vista Ultimate PC that is networked to the Windows 7 local printer.All has been working fine until today when the Vista PC would not print. I deleted the networked printer in Vista & tried to re-add it but it cannot find the networked printer.I noted that the Print & File Sharing was not Enable on my Win 7 PC but when I enable it it will not remain set when I return to check the setting.I tried enabling it in Safe Mode w/Networking but it will not remain enabled.Firewall setting are all normal (no changes in settings)I don't have any infections of virus (online scan) & I use Windows Security Essentials for my AV prog.I've not installed any new apps?

Nov 9, 2009Ok, so I have a couple of issues with my home network. I have 4 machines networked on a wireless network. Router is a Linksys WRT54G with WPA encryption using TKIP (if that makes any difference). One machine is running Win 7, one is running, Vista, and the other two are running XP Home. Both of the XP computers are using old Linksys WMP11 PCI wireless adapters. I will refer to the computers as W7MACHINE, VISTAMACHINE, XPMACHINE1, AND XPMACHINE2.
1. Ok, so my first problem is kinda simple. I'm trying to share my profile folder on W7MACHINE (C:UsersMe) over the network. I have it set to share, permissions give everybody full access, but none of the other machines can access it. They can see it, but when they try to access it they get an error telling them access is denied. Password-protected sharing is disabled, by the way. Why can't I access it?
2. The second problem is really the biggie. I have a Lexmark X5270 connected to XPMACHINE2, and I want to set up the other computers so they can print on it. XPMACHINE1 prints on it fine, no problems. Neither the Vista nor the Win 7 machine, however, can install it via the Add Printer -> Network Printer utility. Both W7MACHINE and VISTAMACHINE have the drivers installed on them, however, the company has not released drivers for Win 7 yet. When the printer is physically connected to W7MACHINE, it works fine with the Vista drivers.
Whenever I try to add the printer via the Add Printer->Network Printer utility, however, I get an error saying that Windows could not access the printer (error 0x0000000d). So, I tried the method that I found here and a few other places of telling the computer it's on a local port, creating XPMACHINE2Printer as the port, then trying to install. However, all this does is give me an interminable "installing printer..." dialog box, which I have let run for over an hour with no results. When I cancel it, I have to end the task via the Task Manager.
XPMACHINE2 also has a printer connected to it, an HP OfficeJet 4200 Series, which both the Win 7 and Vista computers can access, print on, etc. just fine. So, why can't I access the printer on the other computer? Is the printer too old? Is the computer too old?
3. My third problem isn't very important, but it's bugging me. When I go to the network map in Vista or Win 7, both XP machines are listed down at the bottom of the map because "Windows could not place the following discovered device(s) on the network map". I've heard this has to do with the Link-Layer Topology thing, but both XP computers are running SP3, which was supposed to include that fix. I've tried the method for fixing it found here, but they still don't show up.
Printer And File Sharing - Logon Failure
May 11, 2009I just installed W7 RC1 and now I cannot connect to my windows 2000 computer that has my printers. When I try to connect it comes up with "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" With W7 beta I was able to connect.
I noticed that when I click Use another account it has a domain listed under the username and password area and that domain shows up in the username like this DomainUsername.
Network Stopped Allowing Printer And File Sharing
Dec 31, 2009I have a home network (Workgroup) that includes an XP-Pro Desktop (PC1), an XP-Pro laptop (PC2), an XP-Home Netbook (PC3), a MAC Leopard laptop (MAC), and Win 7-Pro Desktop (PC4). The network also includes a NAS, a TCP-IP connected printer and a MAC-attached printer.
I am using a Linksys WRT54GS router connected to a cable modem to connect the PC4, the MAC, the NAS, a Viewsonic VS10407 Wireless Access Point, and a Netgear RP614 ver4 router configured as a switch access point.
The PC1 and the TCP-IP printer are hard-wired to the switch access point, and PC2 and PC3 are connected via WIFI.
I had all of the computers save the netbook on a Workgroup and all computers could be seen from all except the MAC. I was able to print on either printer from every machine.
I then added several applications including Adobe Acrobat Standard, ScanSnap Manager, ScanSnap Organizer, MS Office Pro 2007, Thunderbird Mail, etc. and I added any number of Windows updates, Norton Internet Security updates, etc.
I also installed a Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Document scanner and I setup the XP-Home Netbook.
Somewhere along the way my Workgroup network went astray. I can still print on both printers from each computer but I cannot see the various computers and I get an error message:
"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."
I have not been able to determine what went wrong and I am hoping to get some expert assistance here.
Netgear DGN2200, Windows 7, Win XP, No Printer Access Or File Sharing?
Mar 10, 2012I bought a NETGEAR DGN2200 modem/router to connect my 2 laptops, printer, USB HDD for file storage and sharing, and at this stage I'm not sure if I will connect my desktop PC as it is a much older machine with Windows 2000 Pro which I don't want to access the internet, although I am thinking that it would be better to have the printer connected via the desktop as this is logically a more permanent setup. Hard wired ADSL will be connected in about 2 weeks.I was having a bit of a play with the router to familiarise myself with it all and I managed to set it up so that my main laptop (Windows 7) has the option to connect by hardwire or wireless, my second laptop (winXP) conects through wireless. Both laptops successfully connected
I connected the printer to my second laptop (winXP) to see if I could have access to the printer from my main laptop (Windows 7). It could see the printer but not access it and kept trying to search for the diver. As I hadn't installed the drivers onto this laptop I thought that if I download the driver and install it, then it won't look for it through windows update via the router.For this to happen, I had to disconnect from the LAN and connect to the internet via my USB modem (the two won't work simultaneously).So I connected the printer to my main laptop and allowed it to find the driver online itself.
I then connected the printer back into the second laptop (winXP) and tried to access it from my main laptop and the same thing happened, it wanted to search windows update again. After failing to find anything through the windows update, it gives the option of browsing for the .inf file on the computer, and although I spent a while trying to locate where the file was I was unsuccessful.I also am unable to share files between the two laptops, although I have turned file and print sharing on with both laptops. I have seen options to set up workgroups (winXP) and homegroups (Windows 7), but the two are not compatible.

FIOS is connected to Computer A. A Network of all 3 computers and a Homegroup have been set up from Computer A.We use Office 2010, mostly Word 2010 for our word processing tasks.I realize that with a Homegroup, you can create a Word 2010 document on Computer A, save it to the default location (Libraries/Documents), then open that document on Computer B, make changes to it, save it to the default location, and then open that same document on Computer A, which will show the saved changes made on Computer B.I would like to know if a Word 2010 document can be created on Computer A, then be saved to a specific folder - not a default saving location - on Computer B, so that the user on Computer B can modify the document, save it to a specific folder - not the default saving location - so that the user on Computer A can open the document from its specific folder and view the saved changes.Would this involve advanced sharing, or permissions, or some type of change on the network?

I have been experiencing a problem for, approximately, 2 weeks. Now the problem is , that in "Network and Sharing Center > Advanced Sharing settings", "File and Printer sharing" options turns on automatically upon restart ( or i think it turns on also when I disconnect my Internet connection).
Now, I don't want it turned on. I am tired of turning it off again and again. There is this day I turn it off, then the next day, I just verify if it's turn on or not, and what I see is that it is enabled. How? I didn't do that? Nobody uses this Notebook except me.

I'm on Windows 7.I googled and found one specific solution, which was to make sure several services were set to automatic and started. Jul 26, 2009So, I'm not completely sure if this has been happening the entire time I've been running on 7, or just the latest build, but it's been going for a while now. I've just been dealing with it, but now it's getting very old.
So, whenever I try to save a picture, or video, or anything like that online. When I click save as, and then name it what I'd like. When I hit save I get an error, and then I hit save again and it asks me if I want to replace it. So I hit yes, then it saves, or downloads the file.
C:UsersGunther(My Pictures, My Video's) (Anything I try to Save) Anywhere I try to save to.. Pics, video's, Music. attachments or anything.
You don't have permission to modify files in this network location.
Contact the administrator per permission to make these changes.
So when I'm on a site and I want to download a video clip I right click, hit save as like I always have then I name it what I'd like and save where I'd like it to go. and that is the error I get. So I hit ok, and then hit save again and it asks me if I'd like to replace, I hit yes and it downloads with the name I give it. I just don't understand why I'm getting this error.

Aug 16, 2010I have an external HDD that contains data originaly created with a windows XP PC. When plugged into my Windows 7 PC, I cant seem to be able to save changes. E.g. if I dbl click on a .txt file to open it in notepad, make changes and then try to save it, notepad says 'access is denied'. Similarly for ultraEdit. If I launch UltraEdit selecting 'run as administrator' this solves the problem. But that doesnt help when opening files by dbl clicking on them. Under file properties, I have checked the files does not have a read-only attribute, and the Administrators group has full-control. I have changed the file-ownership to me. I am configured as an Administrator rather than a Standard-user. If I create a new file on this drive with the Windows 7 PC, I can save changes no bother.I have compared the file properties for the 2 files and the only difference I can spot is that the newly created file has me listed under the Security tab; whereas the old file only has group names listed.

Oct 17, 2012Not a fan of the Office 2007/2010/2013 ribbon so I continue using 2003. Beginning a few days ago about half the time when I save a file what happens is that a second file is created with the same name and "- Conflict 1.xxx" is appended to the file name. It is happening in both Word and Excel.
