FTP Transfer Speed Dropped From 100MB/s To 2MB/s?
Mar 1, 2012
I recently upgraded my motherboard from Asus Crosshair IV Formula to Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3.I had previously configured my home network to fully support 1Gb transfers in LAN between my desktop and my laptop. I could transfer files with full 1Gb speed via FTP and Windows file sharing. But now with the new mobo and it's new network adapter my FTP transfer speeds have dropped down to 2MB/s meaning both upload and download speeds. Windows file sharing still works fine and I can achieve 50-100MB/s speeds with it.What is causing the FTP to work so poorly now? I can only assume it's the new network adapter since it's the only thing that's changed. I have installed the latest drivers, ran all diagnostic tools the software included, enabled and disabled every feature in the driver configuration but nothing has worked.

I have an Atheros AR9285 WiFi card in my laptop, and the other day, it just became very unstable with the connection and it is giving me very low transfer speeds. I've come to think that a Windows Update replaced the driver in it, how could I fix it, or fix the problem?

Here is my problem. In this case, I am trying to transfer pictures from one of my XP systems to my Windows 7 Home Premium system over my wired network. Between the XP systems, things run fairly quick. But not with 7 involved. When I go to transfer the 47 pictures that I want, it tells me that it will take 18 minutes. And this is for only 66.7MB of data. Tell me this can get better. Being new to 7, I have no idea where to look for the problem. I tried searching Microsoft's site and the help files on my system. I just can't find a solution.
Here is some more info, and maybe some you don't need. On the Windows 7 system, I can access all the shared folders on my other systems (all XP SP3). If I go to the network map, my other systems are marked as "The following discovered devices can not be placed in the map.". I don't know if that is a problem or not. The reason I did that is because I was reading through the Microsoft site on file sharing and that was mentioned. It also mentions a program called LLTD, which may be needed on 32-bit XP systems. I tried installing that on my XP system, but it said I didn't need it.
As far as the file transfer, while sitting at my XP system, access is denied when I try to access the shared folder (for my pictures) on Windows 7. Now if I transfer them to the Users/Public/Pictures folder, it will transfer them in just over 5 minutes. Still a little slow, in my opinion, and not where I want them. Why can I transfer there and not into the folder I want them? And why is quicker to transfer while sitting at my XP system?
I have made sure that all the systems have the same workgroup name. I have also tried disconnecting the power from my modem, router, and all systems then powering each one up one at a time. That was suggested to me before. It didn't change anything.
One last thing. While starting my Windows 7 system, as soon as it was at the desktop, I tried to transfer the pictures again and the transfer took off. Almost immediately, it said that there was 20 seconds left. It was flying like I thought it should. Less then a minute into the transfer, it hit a wall and changed to about 20 minutes. Go figure. I checked my settings for the folders I want to transfer to and they are set as shared. Maybe at that point, a security program started up. I don't know. I do have a trial version of Norton's Internet Security installed. It came preloaded with the system. I was thinking of removing that and going with Avast free. I have checked any firewalls and did disable them. No difference.
I tried to list everything I've tried. Hopefully, some helpful info in there. I find it strange that I can access the shared folders but not transfer from them. Any thoughts on what to do? Is there a setting in Windows 7 that needs to be changed?

At first, when I checked this on this new rig, file transfers ran between 60-100 mbps, but the last several times it has dropped off to 1-2 mbps. I checked the drive involved with HD Tune, and it performed about the same as it did on the first test, so I don't think that it is a hardware problem. Nothing else was running that should slow things down, so what else could account for this?

I have recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows. I have also had to replace the motherboard, CPU and power supply. I borrowed a 1.5 TB Freecom firewire external hard drive from a friend to back-up important data before the format, but the transfer speed is uselessly slow now that I am attempting to put the data back on the drive.
I have tried:
- updating the drivers for the firewire card
- switching to 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) in the device manager
- Optimizing the drive for 'better performance' as opposed to 'speedy removal' in the drive's properties.
As things stand at the moment, I am getting about 400 kb/ps transfer speed from the external to my on-board drive. As you can imagine, this is virtually useless to me, considering I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of data to transfer.

I have a Verbatim pen drive, the capacity is 16 GB. When I start any transfer, say of a 300 Mb file, the first 200 Mb of data gets transferred at about 100 Mbps, then it freezes for at least 2-3 minutes after which the last 100 Mb will get transferred at 8 Mbps. This happens with every file. I reinstalled the USB 3.0 drivers and the pen drive is connected in a 3.0 port.

This sounds really noobie of me but is it possible to improve local network transfer speed by adding a 2nd network card. I was planning to connect one exclusively for lan transfers and another one hooked to a separate wireless router.
Right now only a maximum of 3 users can stream SD videos off the PC before it gets a little choppy.
The pc in question runs on windows 7 and it's board has built in gigabit, I happen to have a spare gigabit card.

I had to reinstall Windows 7.
I guess the first install made the 100MB partition because it saw WinXP on my old partition. On second Windows 7 install this partition became free, boot files now at c:
The dumb thing is the 100MB partition was renamed D:
I was able to rename it F: just to get it out of the way of my normal naming convention, D for flight sim, E for games and other stuff.
How can I merge this 100MB partition with one of my other (D or E)?
Another thing, C,D and E are "primary" partitions. I am used to see a few "extended". Is this ok? Only the 100MB partition became "extended".

In my reading, I got the impression there is supposed to be a 100 MB system partition installed as part of the Win 7 installation. I don't see this partition on my system even looking at it with Acronis Disk Director.
If I am right that there is supposed to be this system partition, it sounds like it could be a problem down the road that I don't have it. Is there any way to get this partition installed on my system w/o doing a new clean install and, if so, what would be the procedure?

i have a reformated HDD that previously contained WinXP. When I installed Win 7 couple of years ago I retained the old drive until I could remove other data from it. That has all been done. The drive has been reformatted, but used space is 100MB. I suspect it was set aside for Win 7 System Reserved space. How can force that space to be freed?

I have been running windows7 for a year now on my pc. Its super fast and I love it. However; I have struggled to get Home Groups to work, and there are some other aggravating issues that I think I'll clear up by re-installign windows. I'll be using my family pack of Windows7 Upgrade DVDs to get it done. Currently, I have a kingston 128 (maybe its bigger, don't recall) SSD that I keep my OS on. I have a 1TB HDD that I keep my data, user profiles, and all temp files on. So, I currently have a drive letter "D" that is the 100MB reserved partition. I already don't like keeping all my stuff on a second drive, but the idea that its on "F" is really odd to me.

I just want to be able to increase the speed of my fans beyond their spec, and have complete manual control over their RPMs without a care about the temps. I have a liquid cooling setup and the fans on my radiator as they are right now simply aren't cutting it. I have them hooked up to the motherboard in hopes of finding something to just boost their speed via software, but SpeedFan is the only thing I could find and it simply sucks for that purpose.

I installed Win 7 fine and about a week later I dropped the DVD. There is a scratch on it that is noticeable. I then copied the DVD to a folder on my C: drive to see if there was an error on it. I got a message when it completed "Copied Successfully". Would you say that would mean it copied with no errors and the DVD was not harmed by the scratch?

Am in deep trouble again - my WLM password has failed yet again and I don't know how to recover it. I have tried everything that I can think of even going to the length of creating a hotmail account which also I cannot access. SIW shows up the saved password but it will not work.I rely on WLM for contact with just about everyone including SF and it is truly getting me down. Is there any recovery apps that anyone knows of to get back the WLM password that is so important?

I built this PC a couple of days after windows 7 came out. I've been very happy with it, and with windows 7. It's all been running great.
I was shocked when my graphics card (an XFX ATI 4850) scored 7.3 in the WEI tool, but pleased at the same time.
Earlier today i updated the drivers to the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, something i hadnt bothered to do before, then ran WEI again. This time it wasnt a pleasant suprise i got, as my score plummetted to a measly 6.0.
I wonder if these drivers are actually making my GPU perform worse, or wether, without the latest drivers, WEI just wasnt sure of my graphics card and so tried to make a rough estimate the previous time i ran it.
What do you think? Should i roll back the driver change? I cant see any difference at all in the games i play but i'm not playing anything particuarly hardcore to push this beast anyway.

finally getting around to my first win 7 install on my new 120 gb mushkin chronos deluxe.I am using tweakhounds win 7 install guide found here: TweakHound - Installing Windows 7 particullary, I am trying to avoid the 100 mb loss:
Quote: Code: *Avoiding the 200MB partition: Folks have discovered that on an unpartitioned drive Windows 7 will create a 200MB system partition. This is easily avoided by creating a partition before attempting to install Windows 7 (see above). (for some this partition will be 100MB)**Exception for SSD drives to avoid the 200MB partition and partition / format the drive.Partitioning is a little different for SSD (Solid State Drives). This is because of something called NTFS partition alignment. Basically this refers to where on the drive the partition starts. Vista and 7 will create a single partition optimally for SSD's. XP and most program boot disks will not. If possible you should partition the disk under an already installed Windows 7 or Windows Vista machine and then proceed with the usual installation steps. If not then this is the way to do it:
Windows 7 Installation Advanced Drive Formatting
1 - Boot up from the Windows 7 installation disc.
2 - Choose Repair your computer.
3 - In the System Recovery Options screen, choose Use recovery tools... and click Next.
4 - Open the Command Prompt.
5 - Type diskpart and hit Enter.
6 - Type list disk . Find the disk you wish to install Windows 7 on. If you only have one disk then it will show as disk 0. If you have multiple disks find the drive you wish to install 7 on.
7 - Type select disk 0 (or use the number of the disk you wish to install Windows 7 on)(note - that is a zero)
8 - Type list partition. There shouldn't be any.
9 - Type create partition primary.
10- Type select partition 1.
11- Type active.
12- Type format quick.
13- When finished reboot and begin your installation.
( DiskPart Command-Line Options ) After reboot, the ssd shows as having 100 mb used and is listed as a system drive.

So I finally got around to checking one of my set ups and I discovered that it does not have the Windows 7 100MB section on the SSD. I double checked with Macrium and sure enough, there is no 100MB section on the SSD.
Is there a way to install it without having to reload the entire O/S again?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A300M00 Notebook and got it about a year ago with Vista Home Premium. I purchased the new Windows 7 Home Premium (Full) and did a clean instal.
Now they issues is this. When i was running windows vista my WEI (windows Experience Index) was at an overall 5.0 (knowing that vista's max is 5.9, my laptop was pretty powerful and ran games and other things beautifully).
So knowing that Windows 7 is supposed to increase computer performance, the opposite has actually happened on my system (both by looking at the WEI which is now 3.8 and the performance itself with games in particular being much slower).
I was wondering why this may be the case, i have installed all driver related to the graphics card which is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650 512MB Ram. My CUP is 2.5Ghz Dual core, i have 4GB Ram and a 400GB Harddrive.
The windows experience index is as follows. Processor went from about 5.4 to 3.8, RAM went from 5.0 to 4.0, Graphics stayed about the same at 5.2, gaming performance went from 5.5 to 6.1 and HDD went from about 5.2 to 4.9.
The lowest of those being the Processor is the subscore and not only is this rating system different but the performance is actually worse with games, Far Cry 2 i use to be able to run 1,024 x 768 with 2XAA at Very High Graphics nicely (just as an example).
So anyone with any answers would be awesome.

I have a Samsung Laptop and it was in hibernation mode when it was knocked off of an ottoman and fell about a foot and landed right side up on the floor. When I opened it there was nothing but a black screen with a cursor on it. So I turned it off by holding down the power button and then turned it back on the sumsung start up screen came on and then the screen was black except for a Little flashing white bar on the upper left hand side and then it just stays that way, I have also tried taking out the battery but it did not work. One time it came up with an error saying your computer can't come out of hibernation anything not saved previously will be lost and at the bottom it says enter=continue but when I hit enter nothing happens.

I restored Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit version) on my PC and I used Easeus Todo Backup v4.0.0.2. to do this. I restored the hidden reserved partition and also the Windows partition (my C: drive). However, the restoration altered the size of both of these partitions. It has reduced the reserved partition from 100 Mb to 99.7 Mb and I'm guessing it must have increased the C: partition and used the 0.3Mb reduced from the hidden partition (I can't remember the original size of my C: partition)? Will the reduction in size of the reserved partition from 100Mb to 99.7Mb have any implications? Does anyone know why this should happen and should I use a partition manager to put it back to 100Mb?

Yesterday i accidentally dropped my laptop (HP Pavilion G6) and the battery fell out, it was plugged in at the time. It didnt fall from much of a height so i thought it would be ok. Upon starting it up again it came to a black screen asking if i wanted to use startup repair or start up normally. i swear i clicked on start up normally but it chose startup repair regardless. I left it overnight on the startup repair function as i heard it could take a long time for the program to run.
