I've been running this system just fine until recently when this problem with the right-click menu started. Actually, it is a problem specific to the "New" portion of the right-click menu in Windows Explorer. I can right-click a blank portion of an Explorer window and I get the usual instant pop-out menu; but, if I click "New", it takes a full ten seconds to respond. For ten seconds, it is as though I didn't click at all, then the "New" nested menu appears and everything works as normal. If I impatiently click several times in a row during that ten seconds (on "New"), everything grays for the rest of the ten seconds, then the Windows Desktop redraws completely and I have to start over again trying to use the "New" menu.
You fixed my infected laptop quite a while back, (GRINGO) I think.cant remember how I was directed to the site.My laptop is playing up again, it is really slow and does not feel right. It takes a while to load explorer and other web pages and a long time to run some applications.I have tried virus checkers and malaware removers but when i did it found and removed some trojens but I think it is still infected.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure why this is happening, but if I attempt to open a drive in Windows Explorer, it takes a really long time (sometimes several minutes). It takes that long for the progress bar on the address bar to fill up. Does anyone know why this would be?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 home premium 32bit on a pretty fast AMD phenom II x4 with 4gb ram. The problem I ahve is with windows explorer. When I click on a drive, it takes about 5 seconds before it will show me the folders. Then when I click on a folder, I have to wait as a little hourglass-type slider goes across the top of the screen before it will show the contents. This can take anywhere from 2-15 seconds. I don't remember any other windows OS doing this.Is there something I can change to help speed this up? Not sure that it matters, but I checked defrag and most of my drives are less than 5% fragmented - the most being 15%.

Has anyone got any idea why this is happening?

I am looking at a 1TB disk, which with partitioning considered is showing as a 931GB disk - however even though I am using only 421GB of the disk space Windows 7 (Explorer) is showing that there is only 202GB free on the disk.As you can see above I selected all of the files on the disk, right clicked, selected Properties, and the results of my enquiry are shown (superimposed over the Explorer view).

When I check my processes, its mainly explorer and dwm (desktop windows manager) that's using the most. I have ran a lot of scans already and no malware was found. Here's a link of all my logs [URL]. I would like to have my cpu running at full speed again.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been having major problems with svchost.exe.. From what I can gather, this process relates to Windows update service; and I don't want to end the wrong process (since each leads to one or more separate locations) I would like to know what I can do to remedy this; because it is extremely irritating! I am also having trouble with Explorer crashing, which of course bombs my desktop.. I've been experiencing missing paths for icons, even the parent location of an executable program shows the standard 'file' image Image reference : The latter of those two is the containing folder for that program of course; and the .ico is related to the file within it's properties, but does not show on the desktop or explorer window! )

Now to the actual problem. The reason I bought all this RAM was so that the computer would run faster and more smoothly. Despite the large amount of memory, however, I still experience frequent spikes in CPU Usage, which I have learned is not related to RAM very much if at all. Regardless, I would still assume that my system wouldn't have to overexert itself to run simple tasks like Windows Explorer (i.e., folders, desktop and taskbar) or the Task Manager itself.
Either of these tasks, as well as others such as "System," "svchost," or "File I/O Surrogate" (none of which I know much about) can spike to anywhere from 30-70% of the CPU without warning, and when it does, the total CPU Usage ends up being 100, which REALLY makes my laptop sluggish and unresponsive.
I understand that RAM does not directly impact CPU Usage, but I would also assume that, since my laptop isn't ancient, that its CPU shouldn't struggle to display my folders/desktop/taskbar, or to run the Task Manager itself. I also run a daily virus check with Symantec Anti-Virus, so I don't think infection is the issue. In addition to that, I monitor memory usage alongside CPU usage, and the memory usage never goes higher than 10.5 (it usually hovers around 6-8) or so GB of my available 16-- insufficient RAM is also probably not the problem.
I am having trouble just viewing the "Downloads" folder in Windows Explorer It used to just be a periodic thing, now it takes literally 2-5 minutes to load this folder! (I cannot even sort it while it is loading!)I noticed in Resource Monitor that "MsMpEng.exe" (Microsoft Security Essentials) is checking each and every file in there everytime I open it. (Hundreds of line-items in Resource Monitor.)So something must be flagging most of these files as changed or something so that MSE is going in and re-scanning everything. Here are some [perhaps ] pertinant notes about my Downloads Folder: It is very large, with almost 1,000 items. However, I want to keep it large as I have many apps running directly from the folder. (There are of course sub-folders for organization, but I find having a single download spot is good for catching things I may have already downloaded...) I have it mapped from C:Users[USERNAME]Downloads to D:...Downloads (My C: drive is an SSD so I keep this large amount of data off it.) I made sure to add this to the Windows Index. The "Date Accessed" date is updated to today for about 1/3 of the files (300 or so) even though I am only really accessing no more than 3-10 per day. It does not seem to matter what type of file it is (exe, zip, etc...) I added this to my "Favorites"; however, this happens regardless of if I access the folder via Favorites, [USERNAME]/Downloads, or d:...Downloads. I generally add stuff to that folder via Google Chrome. However, I could not catch the Chrome process doing anything weird or anything when downloading something.

I've been having a problem for a while that everything is taking longer to load upMy computer startup time has drastically increased, from around 20 seconds (to login screen) to around 40 seconds. Additionally, individual programs take longer to load, too. Where Chrome used to be a nearly instantaneous load, I now have to wait around 10 seconds for it to start up and become responsive. However, after opening each of the programs for the first time (after each computer startup), closing the program and reopening it will result in a normal load time. Only the startup times have been affected; the actual performance is fine.I've already run virus scans (I have Norton Security Suite), chkdsks, tinkered with msconfig, and many others, just short of reinstalling Windows. I'm not too sure what to do now, as a re-installation would take quite a bit of time to create a backup[CODE]
