If you are using IE9 and are trying to save a download, you've probably noticed that your not given a choice where the file will be saved to. It is automatically saved to a specific file. When I want to save a download, I prefer to save it to the desktop. Is it possible to change this setting so I can save a d/l to where ever I choose?
View 2 RepliesIs it at all possible to hide the Downloads, Links, Favorites, Searches, Videos, Saved Games, and Contacts folders (just the folder, not contents)? I've tried just hiding it like any other folder but it won't work.AND if possible, have explorer open in my home folder instead of libraries.
PS: I tried disabling libraries entirely, but it opens to My Documents instead of my home folder.
Sometimes when a file is saved to the Desktop on which some icons have already existed, the icon of the saved file is inserted between the last system icon (My Computer, Recycle Bin, etc) and the first ordinary icon.Is there a way to make the icon of a newly saved file always automaticaly placed after all the other existing icons, so that I don't have to drag it manually?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi used to download subtitles from a website which saves it in .aspx file (looking like zipped folder file) and after extracting it used to work fine.But yesterday, when i saved a file it got saved in .dat file. Thinking it will open in notepad (since .srt opens with notepad) i made it to 'OPEN WITH' notepad. But i was not able to view/use the file.Now when iam trying to download anyother sub from the same website it gets saved in notepad and will be of no use.Do i need to install anything so that i can use the file? How do i make it so that the file gets saved in a zipped looking folder and i can use the subs.

View 3 Replies View RelatedRunning win 7 64, when i try to download something as simple as live essentials installer, or itunes setup, the dialogue box comes up and it won't let me open from that location, just save. Trying to save it fails until I hit retry, but the downloaded file prompts the "open with" box. This is a brand new machine and install. The only thing I really did was follow the tutorial on here to move the default locations for my files. Oh, and if I transfer the file from a zip drive, it works fine.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI try to download a program (for instance u torrent) I dont ever get a dialog box with the run option in it. Instead I get a bar on the bottom of the screen that gives the options of "open", "save", or "cancel". When I click "open" nothing happens. When I click "save" a file is saved in my download folder by the name of "utorrent_exe" with no extention. When I try to run it I get a message that asks what program I want to run it with. Oh yeah, by the way, I am running Windows 7 Premium Home Edition.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm on a brand new HP computer running Windows 7 and everytime I download a file from the internet or even save files from local programs to my desktop, they are saved as some sort of hidden file...or at least they behave similar to hidden files. The difference is if I open up an Explorer window and browse to my desktop, I can see them there that way, but there is no icon on my desktop for the file. I CAN see the the saved file on my desktop if I turn "view hidden files" on...but when I look at the properties of said files, they are not actually marked "hidden." I can even copy/paste that same file in my desktop and I will see the copied file show up visually on the desktop, but still not the original file unless I browse to the desktop in an Explorer window.When right clicking the desktop, "Show desktop icons" is turned on and I can view all of my other desktop file icons, shortcuts, etc.

I don't mind autoplay, it's not that I want it disabled. I just want it to remember my choice. I always choose 'open explorer to view files' but the choice is forgotten next time, and there's no checkbox to remember it. Found this tool for XP, might it work on 7?

I previously had 2 XP installations - one on the C drive for general useage and one on another drive for audio recording (both are SATA) My C drive XP has been slow and rubbish for a while and so I thought I would reinstall windows on that drive, which I've done before a few times. Then I thought I'd like to try Windows 7 so I installed that. During the installation I formatted the C drive (looking back on it maybe not so clever - there was no data I needed on there but maybe I deleted important files?) and installed 7 on there.
Now, my problem is that I can boot into windows 7 fine, but I am having real difficulty in getting XP to work, due to various things. I have used easyBCD to try and sort out my OS choice at startup, as per some walkthroughs on this forum. When I reboot I have a strange problem where I cant see the screen where I choose the OS, but I know its there because the computer waits for a bit, unless I press enter (to choose windows 7) or down and enter (to choose XP) - so its there but not being displayed on screen.
That's not such a problem, but when I choose XP from the OS select (or what I assume is XP given that I can't see it) the computer just restarts right from the beginning. There was no ntldr in the D drive (where the XP installation is) so i copied it from the XP installation disk.
Also, when I used to be able to get into the 'Studio' XP installation, it thought the D: drive was the I: drive, if you see what I mean..
At present, I'm running a dual-boot of XP Pro and Vista Home Basic. I wan't to overwrite Windows Vista with a clean install of Windows 7, rather than an upgrade. I wan't to know if I go through with this, will XP still be selectable in the Windows 7 boot menu? And if not, how to remedy this.

I have Windows 7 installed alongside Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. Recently I've got a problem, when I boot the computer the Motherboard graphic appears and goes black, the OS choice screen doesn't appear. As I know from previous experiences the first choice is windows 7 and the second choice is Ubuntu I use arrow keys to select the OS with the screen still black, the screen appears only when the Log On screen appears (in both OS).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just freshly restored the Windows 7 Ultimate Edition image from the restore DVDs for my Thinkpad. Once I had completely installed all relevant Lenovo and Microsoft updates, I set up Windows XP mode while still logged in as the administrative user, an error. There was the option to remember user credentials in the second panel of the XP Mode Wizard which I selected and verified that the resulting XP Mode VM did autologin as required (integration mode was automatically started as well).
So I logged off that Windows 7 account and started the XP Mode Wizard in my usual standard user account, but this time there was NO "Remember credentials" option available in the second panel of the XP Mode wizard.
I logged back into the administrative Windows 7 account, deleted all the XP Mode files, and started the XP Mode set-up wizard again, and this time there was NO "Remember credentials" in the second panel.
In each case, the VM's "Delete credentials" button in the relevant VM settings page is greyed out, as is the ticked option to remember credentials lower down in that settings page. Integration is auto-started as well.
How can I restore the "remember credentials" function for XP Mode?
My sister sends me jpeg photos from her phone as attachments in gmail. In the email, the preview pic looks normal. When I click View, the pic is enlarged, but flipped 90 degrees. If I download the pic, it's flipped 90 degrees. If I open the pic in windows live photo gallery, I can rotate it, but will get a bunch of pop up error messages saying This photo cannot be saved because of a problem with the photo's file properties. Then it says there's a problem with windows live photo gallery and shuts down. This pic flipping in gmail started about a week ago. Previously her pics displayed correctly. She says she's doing nothing out of the ordinary. I just tried loading the photo into MsPaint. I was able to rotate it and save it.

The files I save, when I check their properties, are no longer hidden. I have to go through this process ANY time I save a file to my desktop, no matter the file type.
Files saved to other folders aren't hidden.
trying to make some basic changes to the screen personalization but they wont stick. I'm in administrator mode, by the way. Every time I log back in, they revert.In particular, Im trying to change the way a slideshow is displayed. I go to Desktop Background and change Position to Fit. I Save Changes and all seems to be well. I also save the desktop theme under My Themes. But when I log back in it goes back to Stretch. Am I missing some kind of permissions thing? Or do I just not understand how desktop themes get saved?
