Increasing RAM Usage And Improve Re-draw Time

Oct 15, 2012

I have an Intel I5 Ivy Bridge CPU, Win 7 64-bit Home Premium OS, 16Gb RAM and Nvidia GTX 550 TI graphics board with 1 Gb DDR5 memory. I run two real-time stock charting/trading programs on two monitors.

My objectives are to improve screen re-draw time and to decrease Windows' hard disk access. While there are other alternatives to consider, I'd like to invite the community to offer thoughts on two questions:

1. How to increase Window's RAM usage for paging/caching : The System Monitoring tools are showing that RAM usage is only about 30% of the 16Gb installed while Windows' hard drive caching is continuously busy. If there is a tweak to increase RAM usage, I would expand RAM memory to 32Gb.

2. Otherwise, I might install a 120 Gb Solid State Drive. Then, the question is whether using the SSD for the OS or as the cache drive as per Intel Rapid Storage

Say The Time Date/Time Field In Task Tray Doesn't Launch Menu

Apr 26, 2011

About a month after I started using it, the Say the Time clock program I bought stopped launching the management menu when I right click the date/time field in the task tray (notification area).

Therefore, I can't use or edit the program. Neither the touchpad nor the cordless mouse works.

Other than this problem, my computer works great. Every single item that's meant to be right clicked works for me.

Is there a way I can generate a log to show the software manufacturer (Provenio) that it's their problem and not mine? I am a novice user but I can follow instructions. However, I don't want to put my computer at risk if I make an entry error.

I've been using computers for 18 years and I've never had this problem until I bought this software and used it for about a month.

I just wanted a conclusive way of putting the ball back in the manufacturer's court.

System Time Not Kept Correctly After Having Manually Changed BIOS Time

Apr 23, 2012

I spilt some water on my laptop a few days ago but fortunately it's completely dried out and working perfectly.... apart from this minor (but important) issue.

Problem: the system time does not stay correct. Even after manually updating the BIOS time and also even after manually syncing it with the various servers available under the time options.

Fix: set the internet time sync interval to every minute rather than its default setting? How do I do this?

P.S. This couldn't be a CMOS battery issue surely because even when the system is on and plugged in the system time still deviates from correct. (I assume the CMOS battery is only used when the system is powered off.) If I need it replaced, how does that sit with my Dell hardware warranty?

Dell I620 Desktop Freezes (locks) Up From Time To Time?

Jan 14, 2012

So I bought a new desktop computer about 2 weeks ago and ever since I got it, it's been freezing (locking) up on me at random times. I currently use Windows 7 64-bit. I put in a new graphics card and new memory sticks just the other day and I got the same freezing problem. It's very random. I can be surfing the web and the next thing you know, the whole thing freezes up. I can't move the mouse. Can't do CTRL ALT DEL. Can't do anything. Seems as if the whole computer locks up. The only way to restart the computer is by manually holding in the power button for a few seconds. So since I replaced graphics card and installed new memory, I was thinking it may be something else causing this.

Win 7 Boot Time

Jan 13, 2009

I thought it would be interesting to see how quickly our PCs can boot into Windows 7 by having a poll. It starts so much quicker than Vista for me!

It takes 24 seconds from the OS selection screen to the logon screen for me (Q6600 @ 3Ghz, 2GB ram, 250GB Sata).

Boot Time Is Quite Long?

Aug 21, 2012

got Windows 7 up and runninfor a while now , but I am noticing that my boot time is quite long, at least, that how it feels to me. Ive got a pretty strong laptop, so 80 seconds or even 2 minutes at a certain point to boot up seems strange, right? And this is when I've got almost no software installed, it's still mostly a clean laptophen I did the clean install, I had to convert the disk from GPT to MBR,otherwise I could not have installed Windows. Is it because this conversion that my boot time has increased? My laptop supports UEFI, and UEFI needs GPT in order to work.

Abysmal Boot Up Time?

Sep 20, 2012

As I'm trying to turn it back on, it has taken literally 40 minutes to get past the MSI splash screen. It takes a full 8 hours (no I am not kidding, nor exaggerating!) to get into Windows 7. And even then, everything is slow. Not like a normal P4/1GB ram (because I have a machine like that that is faster!) slow, but like low framerate slow. Same with the bootup. The huge MSI logo splash screen looks like I'm trying to download an image via dial up, and loads 1/5 of it at a time, over a period of nearly an hour. This process used to be so fast that I could hardly read it.

Now it takes about 2 minutes 20 sec. I've tried removing some of the start up programs and also tried scanning with Guardian antivirus by Quick Heal, but it showed my PC clean of viruses. This happens if I'm bringing it out of sleep or hibernate too, but it has to be inactive for a few hours for it to give a BSOD.

Chkdsk Run On All Drives Every Time Boot?

Further, might there be any way to distinguish between "this chkdsk is being run because you want it run every time" vs. "the chkdsk is being run because the dirty bit is set (you had a problem)"?
