Deploying Windows 7 X64 To Different Computer From Image File?
Mar 16, 2011
I have a new computer and a backup computer, different hardware (the particular kinds being irrelevant). I also have two Win7 licenses. At each backup I would like to save an image file from the new (primary) computer, restore it to the older one (which I know works with Win7x64), and tweak anything needing tweaking to be able to boot to the old computer under the second license. This saves me the work both of performing sysadmin on the old computer and of backing up the old computer.

At my work place, we are going to deploy Windows 7 to about 20+ computers. I am familiar with WinPE,sysprep , and imagex , but what I am not sure about is drivers for the 3 different models of dell computers I will be deploying to. Models of computers are Dell Optiplex 755 , 760 , 780Do I have to capture an image from each model and put all three images into one wim , then say imagex apply index # for the respective model?Another idea I had was to custom build a Windows 7 install usb (see below)Make a bootable Windows 7 USB stick for install, but replace the install.wim with the .wim from my reference computer (will this even work?)Then using DISM , inject ALL drivers say drivers755 , drivers760 , and drivers780 to the install.wim or boot.wim (not sure which one) so when the installer runs, it finds the neccessary drivers for the model I am installing to.

I m having 2 laptops at home, I want to create system image file of laptop1 onto laptop2. Since the data is large i cant take the hassle of creating sytem image on a DVD as it will require more DVD's to do it. So m planning to store it on Laptop2. I m thinking of connecting 2 Laptops with a LAN cable and then create the sytem image on other laptop.

I'm rolling out Windows 7 to my small company, which is a non-profit, and I won't be setting up a deployment server...so keep that in mind.In the past, with XP, I created a ghost image for each of my hardware devices, and stored them on a server. When I needed to reimage, I'd boot from a custom BartPE disc, access the server share, and use Ghost32 to pull down the image. My older version of Ghost has issues with Windows 7, so I'm looking for a new bootable method. I don't want to use an external USB drive, as I'll be doing the upgrades clinic-style, meaning I'll have several going at once.

The company that I work for has satellite sites in some remote locations where network access is simply to slow to deploy images through. We would therefor want to put a image of windows 7 with all the drivers, and some of the most common software used included, on a 16 GB USB drive. So far I have been installing Windows 7 on a reference computer, with the drivers and software that I needed, and then syspreped it and used imagex to capture the image. Is there a better way to do what I want? Maybe by using MDT?The image must contain drivers for different Dell models (they seem to use most of the same drivers anyway).

I am attempting to test deploy a Windows 7 image to a VMusing VMware Workstation. I have Windows Server 2008 R2 installed as a DomainController with WDS. All network services, such as AD, DHCP and DNS have beeninstalled and configured as well. Both the install.wim and boot.wim files are stored on a separate drive (E)on theWDS server. My problem iswhen I try to PXE-boot the VM to send the image, I get the following error message: CLIENT MAC ADDRESS 00 0C 29 64 E4 5A GUID: 564D90FE-71D7-4F36-3893-38ACA864E45A PXE-E53: No boot filename received PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. Operating System not found
A quick hunch would leave me to believe that both image files werent stored onthe server, but I double checked and both files were present. I have the network adapter on the serverconfigured with a static IP address (192.168.1.10), as well as DHCP configuredwith a 10 IP address range. (192.168.1.11-192.168.1.20). Ive heard that WDS shouldnt be on the same DC as DHCP and DNS. Does this really matter? Ive checked all of my configurations.

One of my drives in raid0 crashed and fortunately I had windows 7 x64 backup activated and running daily. After recreating the array with the remaining drives, I tried to restore from the external usb drive but it didn't work. Apparently the problem is that I had been running "file backup" and not "image backup". Probably because when I configured backup for the first time, it asked to back up all my drives which was not possible and not needed so didn't check the image backup button.
Now the backup set is visible only from within windows (I set Windows 7 again up) but NOT from the restore part of Windows 7 setup / recovery disk. Files inside the backup set are not .vhd but zipfiles. All my c: drive files actually ARE inside the backup set, but running restore will restore all the crap folders (like c: vidia) except from the system folders like c:windows, c:program files (and x86), c:programdata etc.
Any way to restore these? I am thinking of the possibility of somehow restoring all the files and running windows repair on top of this to actually make c:drive bootable again. My users folder is not affected as I had moved it to d: but this presents the additional challenge of being able to actually make the system see the users folder....

I bought a laptop with an OEM serial key and I got windows home basic with it. My internet has limitations and I cannot afford to download a 3 GB .iso or image file of windows 7 home basic. Incase my system gets corrupt or anything happens I would like to have a backup of my whole OS, so is their any way to extract the whole OS from my computer to just one ".iso" file? which later I can convert into a bootable USB flash drive of disc. Plus if possible can I make the iso file which contains my OS and also all the drivers pre installed?

Is it possible with Win7 to change any picture (Jpeg, png, bmp etc) into an icon file to use for a folder image?I just realised that its not an actual folder... its a shortcut which has a folder as an icon, Its actually a shortcut to a folder on another drive, but I'd still like to change it to an image I choose.

I looked and could not find a proper place to ask this, but I just built a new computer (Upgraded the HDD's) and added ram, spend 3 days loading all the software, drivers, etc and I really don't want to go through all that again except for minor updates later on.I heard about Norton Ghost, Ultra ISO, Power ISO, etc and want to know what people recommend for creating a HDD image of my hard drives as they are now so I can boot the computer say a year from now, press a few keys and have it write a clean working image to the the hardrive if I have some sort of catastrophic failure.

I have a small problem tha I have been working on for 2 days, and I am stuck. I have a folder on my desktop that will not delete. The folder is empty, and windows recognizes it as a missing folder. I have attached the image of the error message. I have tried file shredder, chkdsk, defrag, and ran an elevated command prompt and deleted the 8.3 name, but still there.

I had a system with programs I have installed and the setup and imaged it with acronis or for any matter, it could have been a perfect clone drive copy because the program isnt the issue. My i5 - 2500k achi windows 7 was imaged to a new hard drive and attempted to run on a AMD Phenom 4x 9500.Now before you go telling me about the three hard drive modes, Raid , IDE and ACHI. I've edited the registry and have tested all three modes to correspond with the motherboard bios setting of the drive. I assume its IDE or ACHI, which I've tried loading windows on the orginal machine, editing the registry settings, then trying it again on another machine.Where I am at now is it goes to classpnp.sys when im watching safe mode and stalls there. Im noticing before it was stalling at disk.sys but i think i fixed that via the registry settings for the hard drive mode.Tried to make a generalized image by using sysprep got the error fatal error because i guess its used more than three times, dont understand what disarm command they are talking about for workaround since the xml file doesnt exist.
I have tried ACRONIS 2011 Image with Universal Settings mode (that is supposed to remove hard ware specific settings)I have also tried using the windows disc, going into launchup repair, repair startup.I also went recovery console, then tried renaming classpnp.sys to classpnp.old.I tried several options using the Ultimate Boot disk but its not the boot up mbr as it boots up , its the loading of one of the system files/drivers that make it fail. The reason why im trying to just clone one hard drive and put it on another system is because, everything is installed, the programs, etc. Its saving me god bloody 2 days with setting up the programs, although Im getting close to over a day trying to figure out whats the big dela with getting this to work on another computer.additional information : I do not need any user specific preferences, documents, files or settings, everything can go, i just want this installation with about 25 gig of programs, to load and work.If you know of a program thats fairly easy to use considering im already one day into doing this, then let me know and tell me what im looking to do and some instructions are great.Either way, im waiting for an answer, will be here next 3 hours.im on skype as well, this user name is spelt backwards for security reasons.

I am Last night when I get home go to start computer and there is a error about missing dll file, then aas I click the error more missing file errors keep coming up, gets progressively worse until PC does not start windows. Ok, that's cool, I have backup and disk image on another drive in computer, no problem right, WRONG!!!
So pop in the windows 7 disk, go to restore disk image, error!!! Got a few errors while trying once I got one when I checked of not to include one of the disk, the one I keep getting is that there is not enough space on drive for restore. Now the disk the image is on is 150 GB, the disk trying to put it on is 500 GB, so why the problem???
So keep searching on my laptop and find a suggestion to do diskpart-clean. Go through every suggestion I found to use diskpart such as clean. Still not working. I install Windows 7 on the drive which works, install backup files and is there. But I want the image to restore. So in the new install I cant get it to do a image restore, so I try from Windows 7 CD again, Fail.

Our small office has several laptops, some with Intel chips, some with AMD. I'm trying to find a way to create an image for each laptop type that would include Windows 7 and MS Office.
I've looked around a bit, and I'm finding plenty of info on creating the Windows 7 image, but can't really find anything in layman terms for also including MS Office and any other necessary programs (snagit, Adobe Reader, etc.) to include or how to include, in the image.
Obviously, free (shareware) software is good to do the job in order to keep the cost down. I think I might even have a copy of WinPE I inherited from the person that was there before me, unfortunately, no documentation....Like I said, I've never done this before and I could use a step-by-moron-proof-step process if one actually exists...

I make use of the Windows 7 Backup and Restore programs.
Automatically everyday a backup is scheduled.
This backup is configured to contain all user files and a system image.
Now I have tried to find the system image, but I don't know what file extension the image backup should have.
In my backup folder, below, only two .VHD files are present, and a bunch of XML Documents.
X:\WindowsImageBackup\XXXX\Backup 2009-11-04 160010
Can someone explain me in which files the backup and restore programs save the backups?
Also I like to know where I should look for, to know for sure my backup is done successfully.

I just purchased an Asus X54C laptop that came with 7-64bt, the first thing I did was run the backup/restore and created a system image roughly 24gb in size on my logical partition of the HD.
I then installed the customer preview of Windows 8, which I was under the impression defaulted a dual-boot setup as long as you have Windows 7 and choose to keep all of your existing data, which I did.
Long story short, my Asus didn't come with the restore media, which I guess a lot of laptops don't come with. So, I was able to get a copy of Windows 7 so I can at least install over my Windows 8 so I can then start over with my backup that I created.
The version of Windows 7 is x86, but my backup is x64, I restarted into the restore screen and was shown that yes I have the image for the C drive, but I cannot restore for some reason.
Do I need to be on Windows 7 x64 to use my restore image?

I had a Sony laptop that originally had Vista and was upgraded to Windows 7. I recently got a new Lenovo laptop and purchased brand new application software so I could get a clean installation. After 1 month of running both systems and gradually moving material over to the Lenovo, I cleaned the Sony and did a recovery to the original, store bought condition. Now I realize that I failed to move over some pictures. I have a Windows Image of the Sony on an external hard drive. Is there a way I can get the pics from the Windows Image onto the new Lenovo?
