Deleting Unknown User From ACL?
Nov 28, 2012
After transferring some HPFS USB drives from my old PC to the new PC, I've ended up with an unknown user in many of my files. It will be OldPC/Steve, but it manifests itself as S-1-5-21-713417444-3787200217-3968111754-1006 as demonstrated by cacls:
E:>cacls tracefinal.txt /s
E: racefinal.txt "DA;;FA;;;BA)(A;;FA;;;SY)(A;;FA;;;S-1-5-21-713417444-3787200217-3968111754-1006)(A;;0x1200a9;;;BU)"
I can write a script to display the SDDL string for all my files, and to replace the SDDL string with the unknown user excluded, and leave it running for a few weeks (there are millions of files)?

When I first set it up, I said yes to IE's, "Do you want IE to remember this info....." Now that user id is no longer used, and it is a real pain because it starts with the same letter as a currently used ID, and when that letter is typed in, the old one pops into the sign in box. Then of course, I have to type in the rest of the ID until the correct ID is recognized. I've tried to uand it says I need to go to User Accounts. I can't even figure out how to do that

My IE 9 has suddenly decided to delete my stored User Names. I'm guessing the change is due to a download update? Looking at Internet OptionsBrowsing History On Exit it seems that if you check delete Temporary Files, History and Cookies you now also delete saved user names and passwords. Is the only way to save User Names now to uncheck the Delete Browsing History On Exit and do it manually every time?

I am trying to network two win 7 computers. I get the screen Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
I have gone done the following: 1. Same user names and password 2. disabled windows firewall and avg free. 3. Answered "On" to all private network selections. 4. Local security policy to classic 5. Shared files I want to access. 6. Home group named as workgroup
The computer comes up in the Networking and Sharing. When selected I get the screen Logon failure: unknown username or bad password. I have even had my ISP pro look at this and he cannot figure it out. Same thing has happened to me in vista. I am using new win 7 installs. I can map drives with ip addresses and access.

Im a new user of Windows 7, just turned it on for the first time a few days ago, but Im pretty familiar with the setup since Ive used Vista for over a year now. This Windows 7 machine that I just turned on a few days ago is a new work machine for another employee here at my place of work. Ive gone ahead and already added it to our domain, and Ive signed onto it using multiple user accounts that were created in our Active Directory. My question is, how can I go about deleting those Domain User Accounts, Profiles, and Files off of this Windows 7 computer? Ive already made the mistake of deleting the user folder in the C:Users folder, just to find out that if I deleted a user and tried to sign back on as that user (thinking it would create a new profile folder in C:Users), it created a temporary profile.
In the past when using XP all I would normally have to do is delete the user profile folder in C:Documents and Settings and I was able to sign back in as that user and have a new profile created.

I am finding two Unknown Accounts in my User Profiles.I have a home network and wondering if that has anything to do with it. Primary computer (IBM) is not hooked up right now and is the one that is directly connected to internet. This one (DELL) is connected via hub as is laptop when used. I am also connected to a domain for work via VPN(though that will be stopping soon)and maybe that has something to do with it?I need to do a major clean out (for space) on DELL and then a backup and came across this while doing something else.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.
Ghost Shot> This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing restores from Ghost 15,etc. Anyway, ghost was backing up my system C: drive before last week. I have yet to even try and use Ghost to see if it would successfully restore my OS but I've been using it to backup my C: drive anyways. Prior to last week it could backup my C: drive fine. I might try a Ghost restore point from a few weeks back before this happened but not sure yet[CODE]

So a new box recently built, when booted, defaults to the local administrator account. This is a Windows 7 machine for a Linux guru that doesn't want to be bothered pressing more buttons than is necessary, if you get my drift. So my question is, after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del...how do I dictate to Windows that the preferred used is "HisDomainAccount" on our company domain, as opposed to the local admin account?

Earlier today I turned on my Toshiba laptop (Satellite P855-S5200) and got some sort of error screen, and then it brought me to a screen asking if I wanted to do a system repair or start windows normally. I chose system repair, but then it seemed to get stuck in that process (It was taking forever and nothing was happening), so I turned off the laptop (I know, big no no), booted in safe mode, and did a system restore to a restore point from about a week ago. The "starting Windows" screen came and went, no problem. Everything seemed fine till I got to the User Selection screen (the default blue one with the little hummingbird or whatever). Then it just sat there on that screen. I could see the hummingbird and the little squiggly lines, but there were no buttons to click my user. I just let it sit there, and after about 5 minutes, the user names popped up, and I was able to continue using the computer without any problems, no other speed issues whatsoever. It now makes me wait every time, always about 5 minutes, before the user names pop up. It does this when I restart the machine and when I try to switch users.
It is a Pentium Core i7
2.3 Ghz
8 GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

I changed the values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList in order to move the default user locations to my second partition. I then created a new user profile but when I try to login I get the message 'The User Profile Service failed the login'. When I set these values back to normal, new accounts work fine but I really want my user accounts on the second partition.

I changed a user from admin to standard after creating a new admin account. When I boot into the standard user, I am prompted by UAC for the admin password for 4 programs to start. All the programs are ASUS utilities that came with mymotherboard.I have checked the permissions of the programs and the User group has full control. Also, these programs do not show up in the MSCONFIG startup tab. I want the utilities to run but do not want to have to authenticate every time I boot

I am a lab technician for Microsoft classes at a community college. One of our students somehow messed up his hard drive. The computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. The system has two administrator accounts and one standard user account. I am still able to logon with those accounts and there are SID keys for each of these users in the registry.
Now when we create a new user, the account is created without any problems. The user shows up on the logon page and after running the net user command, it shows up there as well. When I try to logon with the new user, I get a message: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
None of the new user accounts show up in the registry. The other anomaly that I see is that the Default User folder is missing in each of the Users subdirectory for the three accounts where I have no problems.
I have read the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 947215 and none of the methods apply to my problem. I also checked Local Group Policies and the Do not logon users with temporary profiles setting is not configured.

How do I map existing User Folders to a newly created User Account?I had existing User Folders on drive D. I added a new drive C and installed the OS on C but changed default location of User Folders to D. Now my existing User Folders are in the Users folder on D but there is no User Account associated with them. If I create a user account with the same name will it map to the existing folder within Users?I did a test of this. I created a folder called Test within Users then created a User account called Test and logged in. It created another folder within Users called Test.Computername.

From my husband's Admin account, I deleted my own User Account, but the account is still there (with a lock icon on it) and I am unable to delete it (gives me the message that the folder is open or in use by another program). I changed the owner to my husband (checked the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects") as suggested on this thread and I still can't delete it.istory:- My user profile was corrupted, got the message that a temporary user profile was created.- Rather than going the route of going into the registry as suggested here, I deleted the account but kept the files (was this my mistake)?- When I went to create a new account, it appended HOME.DESKTOP to the end of my name

Windows XP Remote Desktop Behaviour is desireable. that is, when one account is logged in, if another account is tried to use to log in remotely from another computer, then the 2nd user cannot connect and it is indicated who is currently logged in.
Windows 7 Default behaviour is to allow the second user to try to disconnect the first user through a query message which has an idle timer.
Is there any way to change the behaviour back to windows xp, where 1) disconnection of the 1st user session is not possible, and 2) it is indicated which user is signed on?

My computer is running standard Windows 7 Home Edition (64 bit) and I have been having some problems with it recently.1. Windows Explorer crashes when I try to access files from My Documents, My Music etc. This only seems to be when I access them from the start menu. If I go via My Computer > Users etc all is fine.2. After a short period of gaming, the computer freezes and starts running unbelievably slowly. It is unable to create textures on games and all I can see is characters on a blue screen. I have tried this on Fifa 11 (which now does not run at all), Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Counterstrike: Source. It seems to be fine with browsing and low-end programs though, so I can listen to music and use the internet all fine. All of the games are legally bought etc and worked fine. I left my computer for a few months while away and nothing has changed on it apart from a few windows updates.

In error from a brand new hard drive (and build), I installed the 32-bit version of windows 7 onto my SSD. Upon the product key screen was when I noticed the issue. I input my product key, got windows loaded and then booted from the 64-bit CD instead. Here I chose the custom install feature and went to overwrite my old partition from the 32-bit version but it would not let me. I tried deleting it as well and I could not. I've since loaded 64-bit windows but I do notice that approximately 8Gb is down on my SSD.So at this point, I think I may have 2 options but I'm not sure how to go about either:1) Format the SSD completely so it is in a state like it came out of the box.2) Delete the old partition and gain 8Gb of space on the SSD while using 64-bit windows.

I recently had major problems accessing the internet and some other problems, so I reinstalled Win 7 Home Premium. I had problems reinstalling anmd had to do it a couple of times. I now find in explorer that I have Windows.old, windows.old000 and windows old.001. They do not shown in uninstall. They are taking up a lot of space and when I try to delete them I get messages saying that I need system permission to delete some files, so the folders will not delete. How do I get rid of them.I originally wanted to reformat the hard drive (after backing up everything I wanted on an external HDD) but at teh command prompt I was told thatI did not have sufficient privileges. Can anyone tell me how I can get the privileges to reformat the HDD.I have also found now that my internet connection is running so sloww as to be useless. It is down loading at about 600 BYTES per sec.

I have tried making a VPN, and did it and could connect. Now this was just something I wanted to try for the fun of knowing I'd be able to do it. I have a problem now, I don't know how to delete a network on Windows 7. If someone could help me as google was of no help to remove a single network (as there are important ones, mostly because of the college).
I'm using Windows 7 Pro x64 and when I try to remove the network, I firstly don't know where to go to find it, and when I thought I had found a way to remove it and tried it in the "Merge or delete network locations" link on the "set Network Preperties" Window, it didn't work.

Okay, I want to do a fresh install of Windows 7 onto an SSD, then use my HDD which currently has Windows 7 on it for extra storage. However, I don't want to be prompted about which drive to boot from, nor do I want useless OS files on my spare drive.I don't have another drive to backup files to, so backing up then formatting isn't an option. What can I do to delete the OS files entirely and structure the drive like you would a typical backup drive?

I got a new Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop a week or so back, loaded Windows 7 RC and everything worked fine after a bit of fettling here and there. On Tuesday or Wednesday I had a problem where the laptop locked up while using a Logitech USB Radio mouse. Thinking the mouse caused the lockup, I disconnected it and have been using the touch pad since and no lockups. So far so good.
Then today I plugged in a set of Logitech USB headphones for Skype and I got an 'unknown device' error. I tried with other USB items, ADSL modem, memory stick, all had the same problem on both USB ports and nothing I did would solve the problem. Much googling and a search of this forum again came up with nothing I could use.
I then had a flash of brilliance - I figured it must have been the mouse that started the problem when the laptop froze and somehow something was blocking the USB useage. I plugged in the mouse whereupon it loaded up the software and worked fine, and now everything else loads up and works OK too!
I can't explain it, I'm just a programmer and don't really understand computers but if it helps anyone else in the same frustrating situation, there it is.

i was in my downloads folder on my laptop, and noticed a file I hadn't seen before, it was a zip file and when I opened it, it contained Psd. documents that i had created literally years ago, and never opened since. the strange thing is that in properties, it tells me that the zipfile, and files within the zip, were last created and modified on the 15th oct 2012. which would be ten days ago. also i says that the time which i it was created was 9:30am. i know that my computer is never on that early in the morning So, my question is, does/can windows create a folder of its own accord? is this a case of ghosts in the machine?
