View 2 RepliesSuch as a mouse, a mobile, or an external drive.I mean make them visible (in My Computer) even though they're not connected so it's easier to remember what devices I use. My memory is awful, don't ask.Obviously I know I wouldn't be able to access the files unless the devices were connected, but the point is to make their icons show up as if they were connected even though they won't actually be of any use.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 Pro official release. When viewing folders on any drive under Computer: "Hard Disk Drives" the thumbnails show for all images. This is good. When I open up anything under Computer: "Portable Devices", such as my cell phone, it shows no thumbnails, only icons. This is bad. I need to be able to manage the photos on my cellphone.
I already checked the folder settings and "display only icons" is NOT checked. So how can I enable thumbnails on my phone? Is there a setting in Windows 7, or perhaps a setting on the cell phone to allow Windows 7 to write thumbnails to the folder? It's the Storage Card on the phone, so it really shouldn't be write protected in any way.

View 0 Replies View RelatedI've been playing around with my icons on my desktop, getting some off devientart. Recently some of the icons i've changed (a few shortcuts and .exe's) now show up as white squares or a smaller version of the icon with a white outline around them. Yet others such as one i used for CCleaner and Minecraft remain how i have set them.I've rebuilt the Icon cache.db a few times, done multiple restarts, and have "tried" to extend the Icon cache in the registry (although my new string value doesn't seem to save into the registry) but neither have fixed the problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried out a custom theme yesterday and decided that it was too intrusive to my system overall. I had created a restore point to guard against this, but when I restored, I discovered there are still traces of the custom icon pack I installed using 7tsp on my desktop shortcuts as well as windows explorer. I can't get rid of them.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a syfy writer and in Word 7 I've created custom macros, assigned icons to these macros and arranged them on the quick access tool bar. Every time I get a new PC it makes me crazy. Although I can transfer the macros I don't know how to transfer the icons I've assigned or how I've arranged them on the quick access tool bar.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't think this is exactly related to customization, but rather maybe the way Windows 7 handles file paths. I have an external HD with many folders with custom icons. On my PC the drive letter which is always assigned is G. Now, when I use it on a friend's PC, which assigns drive letter E, all my custom folder icons disappear. Note that all the relevant .ico files are where they're supposed to be (inside the folders whose icons they should customize). I'm assuming Windows always tries to locate the icons on a G: drive, which only exists on my PC but not on my friend's (where it's E). How can I change that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have put custom folder icons (pictures basically), for some of my folders. I can see the custom folder icons, But when other computers on my network access the folders (they are shared), they can't see the custom icons. All the see are the default folder icons.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAre the icons in the Devices and Printers window (Device Stage) replaced immediately upon any system update, or do they just show up and get replaced at random whenever Windows 7 feels like doing it?
I recently did a fresh install of Windows 7 on two different machines (Ultimate x64 on one machine and Enterprise x64 on another) and the devices listed show the stock icons even though the drivers for those peripheral units are installed. All "Update" settings are set to recommended and automatic on both machines.
Weird thing is before I re-installed Ultimate on the first machine, the true icons showed up in Devices and Printers for my monitor, keyboard (MS keyboard), Canon scanner, Brother printer... I didn't quite pay attention how/when that happened, but I was pleasantly surprised with the extra access I had by just clicking that life-like icon.
Now, since the re-install, all I get are the stock icons.
Funny thing is when I hit "Properties", say - for the keyboard, which is a Microsoft 3000 kbd, the info simply reads: "Unknown Manufacturer", "HID keyboard Device". The MS drivers are installed though.
Same thing for my monitors (Dell 2209WA). Windows downloaded the drivers, but the properties info shows the monitor as "unknown manufacturer". How weird is that?
Something I'm missing? Or is this Device Stage fubared somehow?
i have have created my custom icon librarys, opened DDores.dll with Anolis.Resourcer 0.8.8 an found the icons i wish to replace but it wont change the icons.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if there is a way to show the connected devices as icons on the desktop as is done in OS X. If you aren't sure of what I'm talking about, it's when I plug my phone, external hard drive, DVD, etc into the computer and instead of always going into My Computer to view what's connected, it shows up as an icon on the desktop. Is this possible, or is this just a feature I have to live without unless I cross over to the dark side and use OS X?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm a computer tech, and I service a lot of different computers for many different people. In the old days, I could make a bootable floppy with all my utilities on it, and be on my way. Now, of course, few people have floppy drives, but I still need a way to boot all the different computers I find, whether 32-bit or 64-bit. I created a Ubuntu Linux CD, but I don't know the software well enough to display any directory tree apart from the Linux system (I can't browse the Windows directories, or even see the Windows directories). I have a pair of new 16 GB USB flash drives that I would like to make bootable. What should I put on them, and how would I do it? I think I managed to get Win 7 64 on one, but that probably isn't the OS I want to use for my application.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am hoping very much that someone can help me out of a catastrophic situaition after having done a clean installation of Windows 7.
The situation is that I used my 500 GB Fugitsu HandyDrive to save Windows Easy Transfer file but now neither of my two computers will recognise the HandyDrive - they just keep saying “new hardware found - looking for drivers” but don’t find any.
This is devastating as it is (or was!) almost ¾ full of months of hard work - some backed up some not (my fault of course).
I have been using the HandyDrive to work between my 18” and 10” laptops both of which had Vista.
I have the Acer Windows 7 Upgrade Kit for the 18” laptop and after 4 failed upgrade attempts and one failed clean installation, I tried one last clean installation which at last was successful. Each time I ran the Upgrade Advisor and carried out the recommendations. The Handydrive was shown as “USB Mass Storage Device” and shown as being Compatible with Windows 7.
I saved the Windows Easy Transfer file on the Handydrive.
After the successful installation of Windows 7, I carried out the Easy Transfer but was dismayed to find I had very few programs now (I had thought they would be on the Upgrade disc but cant find them). I took the Handydrive out of 18” (now with Windows 7) and plugged it into 10” (Vista) so that I could print the Upgrade Advisor file I had saved, which showed the programs I had before clean install. Disaster - it wouldn’t work! The HandDrive was not in my Ciomputer.
I have written to Fugitsu to see if they can help but in the meantime can anyone on this forum tell me what I’ve done? I will be devastated if I cant recover the data on the HandyDrive
Also how do I get the programs I am missing?
I discovered what is called the $RECYCLE.BIN on a SimpleTech portable disk drive I use. It does not show up in the disk folder/file listing, but I can scan for it in the 'Find' routine (*recycle*.*)). What I am concerned with is that it may contain deleted files that need to be purged, but I can't see how to look at this $RECYCLE.BIN or delete any possible files.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn my new PC with Windows 7 I logged in as administrator, created a folder "Portable Programs", installed my portable programs and data into it, set up Synctoy 2.1 to synchronise it with whatever portable device I like to use (sometimes I need a portable harddisk, sometimes a USB stick is more practical).
When I connected my portable device to an XP Home computer (in desperate need of data) the "Portable Programs" folder was there but it looked empty. XP was not able to run chkdsk.
Back home I saw that there was a lock symbol on this folder. I looked into the security settings, saw System and Administrator with limited rights and no other user or guest rights. All files inside the folder looked still disappeared. After changing access rights they were back and fully accessible... but will they still be on any other computer. I'd like to be sure before any next unpleasant surprise.
BTW I get the impression that MS is using Windows 7 in a secret battle against portability. So far none of my thinstalled programs run on Windows 7, Sandboxie is a real struggle.
I am interested in Thinapp application and virtualization using VMWare Workstation. I did some work on this.
