Create Folder In Start/All Programs?
Dec 10, 2011
I would like to be able to create folders in "All Programs" section of "Start" so I can group similar programs together. An example would be to group all game programs into one folder instead of having them interspersed through the list alphabeticallly. Is it possible to create new empty folders?

I like listening to an online radio station (through Windows Media Player) every time I use my computer. So, I put a shortcut to the playlist file in my Startup folder. But, even though I selected "Run: Minimized" in its Properties dialog box, it always runs in a normal window. (Then I manually minimize it.)So, how can I force the shortcut to open Windows Media Player in a minimized window

No matter how many times I launch Skype or iTunes, they just won't get added to the Start Menu's Recent Programs list.

Every time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).
McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.
This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

Is it possible to create a new folder template? As a working musician, the standard music template is not functional for what I do. However, I don't want to change the standard music template as it IS functional for pre-recorded music, which I also have on this machine. The other standard templates (music, general items, documents, pictures, videos) are all in use with files and folders normally filled with such items. So I need a NEW folder template where I can keep my professional music files.

I'm not sure which section of the forum to post this. For some reason in Windows 7 RC1 (build 7100) I don't have the option to create a new folder in the root of one mapped domain network drive. What's weird is that with all of my other network drives I can, and I can make new folders in subfolders of the drive I'm having problems with. I just can't in the root of that one drive. The account I'm logged in with does have full control of the folder the drive maps to. I've checked with another member on our domain that is running the same RC1 and he doesn't have this problem.

My issue is that I have a separate folder on my storage drive for tv shows, and I want to be able to watch them in another room via my Xbox 360. I've added the folder to the library list for both recorded tv and videos but none of the shows appear. I don't really want to add them to the movies area (where my movies do show up) since I prefer keeping them separate. Can I create another folder for these tv shows or is there a way to make them appear in the recorded tv folder?

I've been using computers ever since Windows 3.1 and '95 and I have been plagued with dozens upon dozens of hdd crashes and similar occurrences which forced me to reformat and reinstall all the programs I use (and have to search and find them again...). I have learned a lot since '95. One method of keeping my apps and media safer is by keeping them on a separate larger internal hdd and running my OS on a smaller ~400gb hard drive. I have just gotten into creating full system images with Acronis that fill up 3+ blu ray discs, which is ok if I'm only making one ever, but my documents and programs consist of more than half of that data. It would be nice to make one full system image right after I reformat my computer and install all device drivers I'll be using; my questions below are in regards to making images of the programs to allow very simple install later. Let me say this as well: I know of the extreme difficulty of taking a system image created on 'PC A' and using it on 'PC B'.Basically unless PC A and B the same brand and model something is bound to not work correctly due to driver issues and hardware incompatibility. Anyways, what I am interested in now is to get one of my computers installed with all the software and plugins I typically use and create a "system image" consisting of only my programs and the necessary files to have them run properly. I understand this may be unfeasible but I'd like to further my knowledge and hear from others their ideas to my problem. I say it may be unfeasible because, when installing a program, files are saved into many different directories, including various folders within "Users" and the hidden folder "ProgramData" (as well as possibly to the "Windows" folder and/or C: as well as the computer's registry).I feel this may work if I get every file that was created at installation time as well as run windows 7 on all of my computers that I'll be using this "software-only system image" on.Is there any software that will allow me to accomplish my goal or at least make my job easier? If this is possible and assuming I'll only be using 64-bit versions of Win7, will I run into problems between, say, Home Premium and Ultimate? Is the structure or layout of the OS different in the ways / directories it installs programs into?If the above fails or is impossible then.I was considering another idea but with more work for me.In school, both high school and college we had computer labs and every computer had the same programs installed and there were many programs (say 20 programs * 100 computers in the larger labs). Albeit the computers were the same make/model, lets forget that fact for the purpose of this question, as well as the fact that all the computers were networked together which may allow little tricks here and there... Forget those facts and here is my last question: Instead of just having an image of already installed programs would there be a way for me to somehow install, say, 50 programs without launching each one individually? I would be very surprised if a program like this didn't already exist for IT people yet. For example, in a law firm, if someone in the office gets a virus do they call in the IT guys and they 1) reformat the computer 2) install OS 3) reinstall all required software one after the next? Seems a bit time consuming, in my example 20 apps * 100 computers, I couldn't imagine installing the same programs 2000 times.

If I have a folder that usually takes a bit of navigation to get to (don't want any shortcuts on my desktop either as I don't have any shortcuts or icons on my desktop) is it possible to assign some sort of key to instantly open it? Such as holding down CTRL+ALT+184 on the num pad and it will open up that folder. Can it be done?

I want to create my own folder that is unsearchable, just like how the contents of c:windows do not show up when you do a root search. I have the 'dont search system folders' option set, and sure enough I have tested it works with c:windows, however my new folder is still showing up. I created a folder c: est, and did a 'attrib +s +h +r test' from a cmd prompt. The command took (the folder is now hidden), but windows does NOT seem to consider it a true 'system' folder (the contents STILL show up in a search). What am I missing here? How do I flag this folder as a true 'system' folder so the contents wont show up in a search.

I am unable to create a folder anywhere in Windows 7 Home Premium - only a briefcase.Been fighting this problem for 1.5 months with potential solutions via Google with no resolution. My system is a Dell Inspiron 530s, Intel Core 2 Duo 430 @1.8Ghz 1.8Ghz, 4GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1.I have been able to create folders since my Windows 7 installation last summer up through mid-April 2012. Believe that the registry was affected by some free SYNC program that I received when downloading a purchased document converter. I have not been able to locate the SYNC anywhere in the registry or by searching Google Desktop.Have used AVG PC Tuneup to clean up and defragment the registry several times with no resolution. Can I find a registry file after an initial install of Windows 7 that I can compare to entries in my current registry?

I have a External PVR unit that is connected to our home Theatre system and we watch downloaded movies that are stored on it's hard-drive.. This box is also connected via UPNP and I can see ALL Drives attached to my laptop which is located upstairs in the study...I was able to, from the computer, map this drive (N Drive) and was able to copy the movies files directly to the hard-drive of the PVR.Until recently, I was able to create new folders on the PVR hard-drive and then copy the files, but am no longer able to do so as I keep getting an error msg stating:"Could not create new file N:Moviesxxxxxx. The system cannot find the file specified"I can however copy the movie files or any other files directly to the hard-drive (ANY FOLDER).. Just cannot create any new folders!!!! Which I was able to do previously.?
P.S. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x32 on a Toshiba Satellite Pro P300
