View 0 RepliesSome special icons (like user folder on desktop) can't be changed, apparently, because no "properties" menu item appear in right-click context menu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am grabbing a text file with a list of users in it. I want to then create folders for all those people and then set explicit permissions on those folders to only allow the users and admin access to it. So for the create user folder, I have...
$Users = Get-Content "C:Users.txt"
ForEach ($user in $users)
{
$newPath = Join-Path \mycomputerUsers$ -childpath $user
New-Item $newPath -type directory
}
This works great as I now have 100 folders created. But how do I use something like....
$acl = Get-Acl "\mycomputerusers$"
$permission = "mydomain$users","FullControl","Allow"
$accessRule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule $permission
$acl.SetAccessRule($accessRule)
$acl | Set-Acl \mycomputerusers$$user
When I try to loop these together it says the folder already exists or the setaccessrule identity references could not be translated. how I loop it in with creating the folder? Or is there a way to just say...create folder based on this username, then take that username and make it the only admin on the folder along with the system admin?
With NTFS and Share permissions is there any way I can allow a user to (in a specific folder):
- Edit and overwrite existing files (like a notepad file)
But
- Not be allowed to create new files or folders
I have spent quite a while staring at the special permissions screen. When reading about the meanings of the special permissions from the Microsoft, it says that the "Create Files/Write Data" permission allows for the overwriting of existing files but it also allows for the creation of new files. Is there some way i can have one without the other? Split the permission? I have also been told that there is a flaw to this as when you open a word document it creates a temp file in the folder where the word document is, and having permissions set this way would cause the word document not to be able to open because it couldn't create that temp file.
whats tthis new restriction and how can i get around it....i am on my admin account initially installed with the OS.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIn the start menu there's a user folder, and within this folder a bunch of subfolders: My music, my videos, my documents, my downloads, etc.
I want to remove these folders and replace them with my own folders that I'll actually use but every time I do I get an error message telling me that the location... is no longer available.
Is there any way to remove these folders or otherwise deal this this or do I just have to deal with having a bunch of unnecessary folders making a mess of my user folder?
new win 7 install. Tried to move special folder from ssd to hdd.Create a new folder on the hdd with the name of the profile. I then assumed when moving folder into it they will be automatically created-> moved "downloads" folder first and selected that above folder without creating a "downloads" folder in that one and select that one. I realized something went wrong and wanted to move it back. On moving it back i made the same mistake, so the whole user profile folder is now the download folder and it is called "downloads" and not after the user name. However right-click does not work on that one. Can't change the path or move it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I took over a PC used by my predecessor, he had Win 7 (MS keyboard) set up so that the Windows key to the right of the space bar and Alt key will dump "http://www." into any open text field. This saves me a lot of time on a repetitive task with our software. However, when I asked one of our best developers how I could assign "mailto:" to another key, he had no idea how the existing functionality was set up. Googling "Windows 7 hotkeys" didn't find me any tips. What to do?
View 5 Replies View RelatedBeing the hurried idiot that I was, I accidentally redirected the My Music folder to the drive letter D. Now I can't restore it to it's default location because the system tries to copy system volume information and other system folders with it.How do I go about this? I wanna avoid having to reinstall windows because I had only just done so before this happened.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I was working with moving my My Documents folder from syncing with Dropbox to Box and I messed up a bit. Well, at least I've found it and have access to it. Now I'm working on restoring a previous version.
Problem A: It's hidden and I can't figure out how to undo that because:
Problem B: It's a shortcut and I don't know how to switch that back to something that works
Problem C: It won't let me access the previous versions. It says:
"Windows cannot access \localhostC$GMT-2012.09.07-20.26.55Users My Documents.
You do not have permission to access "Contact your network administrator to request access". I am the administrator and I have full access to the folder except for the "special permissions" check box which is grayed out empty.
A twist on the creation of user folders on a drive other than C: in Win 7 Ultimate. Does anyone know if one could designate a user folder location such as E:Data instead of using the users name and being a subdirectory of "Users". I am the ONLY one on my computer - and it would seem much easier to look to the top folder in the E drive than clicking thru E:, users, name, documents, project. I fully realize that I can set up shortcuts, but when you are in an application that wants to place a file somewhere else and presents you with an explorer windows it is a pain. The only method I thought of is using redirection with symbolic links.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat was the point of renaming "My Documents" to "Documents" and then never exposing the new name? In every interface, it still appears as "My Documents".
Can I just get rid of the "My Documents", "My Pictures", special folder naming conventions and use the actual, underlying folder names?
I have just done a clean install of Win 7 Pro 64. I have set up four accounts and for each one I have moved the user folders to a separate hard drive by using the Right Click Properties > Location > Move. I have done this for the following folders:
- Desktop
- Downloads
- My Documents
- Favorites
- Links
- My Music
- My Pictures
- Videos
I have done it exactly the same way on each account (and more than once! I've been imaging the disk and have restored backwards a few times.)
The problem is, on three of the accounts, when I move the My Music, My Pictures, and Videos then they do move correctly but three rogue folders appear named Music, Pictures and Videos. And I can't delete then since they are system folders.
But the weird thing is that this does not happen on one of the accounts!
how to get rid of the extra folders as they're cluttering up the users home folder and causing confusion.
How do I map existing User Folders to a newly created User Account?I had existing User Folders on drive D. I added a new drive C and installed the OS on C but changed default location of User Folders to D. Now my existing User Folders are in the Users folder on D but there is no User Account associated with them. If I create a user account with the same name will it map to the existing folder within Users?I did a test of this. I created a folder called Test within Users then created a User account called Test and logged in. It created another folder within Users called Test.Computername.

Nothing happens when I click on "New Folder" in the top menu. If I highlight the folder and rignt click the only choice given me is to create a "Briefcase."

I don't know what I downloaded that caused the problem, but now when I try to make a new folder on the desktop of my new Windows 7 computer, I have only the following choices: Shortcut, Bitmap Image, Contact, Microsoft Word Document, Journal Document, Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation, Text Document, Microsoft Excel Worksheet, and Briefcase. No new folder choice.

Right now I am using the QTTab extension for Windows Explorer, which adds tabs. The problem is if I accidentally close the window or the computer has to do a restart, I lose all the tabs. I have to hunt down each folder again and open them up in their own tab.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy account is a full administrative account. I need to create another user account for a family member. I go to the User section of Control Panel and add the new user, give the account a name with NO password and set to standard user. However, whenever I reboot my Windows 7 Home Premium machine, I get a red x with a message that says - "The username and password are incorrect." I can OK and continue to boot to my account. If I "Switch User" I can log in to the new account successfully. However, I continue to get the error message on boot instead of seeing the screen that shows both accounts so you can choose which one you want to log in to.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is the tip of a horrible iceberg. Active links in the control panel don't open, as though I don't have permission to access the contents, although UAC doesn't appear. I couldn't install Paint Shop Pro and part of the advice was to create a new account (various reasons, not relevant to this post) but I couldn't. I have full admin rights. Elsewhere, device manager is empty (have posted elsewhere about this) so I can't check device conflicts. I contacted Dell support but had nothing useful back, except the advice that they don't supply W7 repair/reinstall software because it's 'preinstalled and so free' (really? thought I'd bought the whole kit and caboodle), I have to buy a new copy. I don't really want to do a fresh reinstall, although I do feel a bit unarmed without an actual copy of windows to hand
