Computer Freezing Every Couple Of Seconds And Programs Not Responding
Dec 16, 2012
For the past couple of days my computer has been freezing every time I open a new program or go to click on something. Using itunes is especially problematic because i will be listening to music and every thirty seconds the music will stop and continue, etc. I use Avast! free for protection and I have done every scan without them finding a virus, however they do get a couple of files they cannot scan and each time they are different files. I am not very tech savvy so I have no clue how to go about searching for the fix, however while searching through google i did find a lot of people had this problem with windows xp.
I own a Sony Vaio VPCEG32FX/W and have 142 GB used memory.
Programs i have installed are Photoshop CS5, Finale Notepad, Itunes, Last.fm, Firefox, Windows Live Messenger, The Sims 3, Avast!, Avidemux 2.5, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Winrar, and VLC mediaplayer
My problem is that my computer keep lagging every few seconds, the video (entire display, including mouse) freezes and audio buzzes.I can go for a while without anything going wrong on my computer, but once it starts to lag, it happens for about 10 seconds on and off. This happens almost randomly, the freeze is about a half a second and happens one after the other.I have looked at many different articles describing problems similar, but all of them are talking about, just a video lag, or just an audio, etcAt first I thought it might be my ram, maybe it was faulty, but i have switched the two 4gb sticks around and tested both so I know its not the ram.
I am having a problem while playing movies in AVI format. Video stop for a couple of seconds after every 3 or 5 minutes. My drivers are up-to-date. Having a laptop with high specifications...so no problem about low specifications and same movies run perfectly on other laptops.
Recently after I tried to add another cooling fan into my NZXT phandom case my pc would turn on and freeze. Sometimes before the windows logo even comes on my mouse and keyboard lights would turn off. I have since disconnected the extra cooling fan but the problem did not go away. I have checked my temperatures and they are not very high. My only thought on this problem is that when I also tried to add a 2nd extra fan (which did not fit well with its clamps due to the graphics card being right below the location) onto my north bridge which at some time had a heat problem as all with this motherboard do but was fixed with a cooler. In trying to add the 2nd fan I might have moved the cooler slightly and messed up the thermal paste connection. However I am not completely sure because my temperatures seem normal and are not in the high range. The only problems or hints I can see are the freezing after several minutes after startup, not reaching the windows logo at all, and my mouse and keyboard lights not turning on when the pc does not reach windows logo before being a black screen.
I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and as of this morning whenever I startup my pc I have about a 10-30 second window maybe (sometimes even shorter) that I can actually get programs to open before my pc just seems to get very slow and nothing at all will open. For example things like ctrl+alt+del takes about 15 seconds before it just goes to a black screen and says the process cannot be completed, whenever I pull up the start menu it will freeze and nothing opens from there, and even trying to refresh the desktop or shutting down/restarting crashes it. I have gone into safe mode with networking to get on Chrome and try to find solutions but nothing has worked. I've ran a full system scan with Malwarebytes and the first time it found only one infection and I quarantined and removed it, but the problem still occurs.
My computer was working fine until I downloaded the windows service pack 1. First it was every now & then but soon my computer was freezing up ( not responding ) and it was impossible to even complete a document. This happens in all applications. I noticed with each new window update the worse my computer got. Still under warranty I spent hours on the phone with DELL twice, finally I did a fresh re-install of windows 7 professional. After the fresh install everything was fine. UNTIL I downloaded the windows updates, it started to 'not respond' again. I uninstalled the updates. The not responding issue is gone but I am concerned about windows security updates. Do I need them? I have contacted windows about this issue many times over the past several months with no response.
So about a week ago after going to some random video site my computer started having issues with freezing up. it predominately happens when I launch firefox and I have noticed more issues when using sites like netflix or watching episodes of my favorite shows on nbc, abc etc etc but it does happen no matter what im doing while browsing. some times it happens immediately after launching the browser and other times it takes a few minutes.
Also of note: Sometimes I can get out of the browser and some times I cant. I also cant restart the normal way and program manager wont load and neither will any thing else. I have to completely turn off the computer. when it comes back on some times the sound icon on the tray at the bottom right will mention that it failed to load and will have a red x. Sometimes windows loads and looks like windows xp or before with strange outdated graphics. I have norton with latest definitions always installed and as far as I can tell there are no viruses or malware installed. Also for a bit Java kept saying there was an update to be installed but when I would click on the icon it would say that there was nothing to install. I eventually figured that out and as far as I can tell the latest version of java is installed. the last detail I can think of: after a hard restart yesterday windows updates where installed and then I noticed that program manager showed high CPU and physical memory usage was higher and when Ctrl+Alt+Delete is pressed for a bit nothing comes up and then the screen turns black followed by an error box pops up:"failed to display security and shut down options".
My laptop screen was broken by being steped on over a year ago. It worked through my tv though with HDMI connection. Out of no where it stopped projecting image to my tv even though when I unpluged or pluged in the cable it would make noise and the screen would flash. This was in august. So I stopped using it and let the battery completely die and sit there dead as this corrected other problems in the past (such as a nasty pop up virus. So I found and RGB-PC cable and have hooked it up to my TV that way.Well now that I can see the screen I have tried to use it and it is constantly freezing every program it uses and will last for a long time including task manager. It has rendered the computer un-usable. I have run a virus scan, disk clean and defrag and it still won't work. I also checked the event viewer and the system log wouldn't open. So I saved and cleared it as per advice on this site. Still the same.
NOTE: When HDMI crashed the computer was turned off using the power button a few times as I could not see anything. Also on one of the boot ups when this problem started to occur and instead of the regular safe mode screen option coming up the other screen came up (something about doing a scan and fixing it) and I guess it timed out or I hit no or something but windows just booted up and haven't been able to use the laptop properlky since. Not sure if its related but figured it was worth mentioning
My Internet Explorer and Real Player programs stop responding on almost a daily basis.I'm wondering if these problems are hurting my computer because i just got it fixed and how to stop them from happening again.
I've just been encountering a new problem. My computer just starts to hangup after just a few minutes of use. Programs lockup for minutes and even my mouse freezes for a few minutes at a time. I don't really know what could be causing it. No processes seem to be taking a lot of CPU usage, and there doesn't seem to be any suspicious processes either. Even as i type this, Google Chrome is freezing and unfreezing, but all my keystrokes are captured
Anyone else got troubles with FF freezing while writing a reply?
I've no problems with IE. I've run MSSSS. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've got the same problem whether wifi or wwan. I've, using RevoUninstall Pro, uninstalled everything down to the essentials.
A few day's ago I started encountering freezing issues when on google chrome and skype. They'd usually last for about 5-30 seconds as the title suggests when it happens I can still move the mouse but during the longer freezes the mouse will go unresponsive. So far I've only encountered one freeze that has forced me to hold down the power button to turn off the laptop. The processes i've done so far to fix this s are an Advanced System care full scan, ccleaner, defraggler , disk doctor (part of advanced system care ) clean result, Ive also done a boot time self test by pressing F10 at start (sorry im not sure exactly what this is ) the memory test came clean, and the HDD self test failed the first time i did it on test 2 (comprehensive) saying Error: read memory. I re-did it yesterday and it passed all 3 tests. The freezes usually occur when I click on an application and it takes an abnormal amount of time to load and then it freezes.
This has been baffling me for at least a month now, my PC will randomly start to slow down after a few hours (2-4) of being used. This began to happen randomly and after no new software or updates where installed. So far I have tried to take off all my overclocks, run a CPU test for 24hours (stable) and all the defrags and disk cleanups that I could be bothered to run. Worst thing is this started happening a day before I was going to make a restore point. All my system info is on my profile.
EDIT: I forgot to mention where the slowdowns occur, they include programs taking a good 5 seconds to open and more confusingly sites take a good 30-40 seconds to load when shortly after boot it takes less than a second.I have checked my network usage and system resource usage and both are within their normal ranges.
My windows media player will play a CD for 2-3 seconds that stop. If I try to get it going again it says it has stopped responding. It used to play just fine so I can't figure out what has happened to it. I have Windows 7 and use Mozilla Firefox browser.
I'm using a decent Lenovo B560 laptop, and when playing games or running programs linked to the hard drive disk, it freezes intermittently.
Not sure what's causing it, but the whirring of the disk drive can be heard for about 3 seconds, at which point it slows down, and then the game freezes until the hard drive starts whirring again. It doesn't seem to be able to keep itself running in order to keep playback fluid; it just keeps spinning long enough to power 3-4 seconds of playback.
System is 7 64 bit, with Intel Core i5 CPU M480 @ 2.67GHz 3GB RAM
When I first installed windows it started to work just fine but I soon noticed that it would randomly freeze every 15-30 minutes of use, but not on a particular program or anything. I assumed it was drivers so I installed the latest drivers for my GPU and MOBO and keyboard. It seemed fine again until it started crashing again. I ran a GPU burn test and a CPU burn test it passed both. (I tried runing memtest86+ but it froze at like 12%) Then I tried fixing the registry so I downloaded ccleaner and fixed the registry problems. Freezes continued. I finally decided to re install windows so I did and the problems still continued. I am at a loss of what to do and can't think of anything else.
Im having problem with MSE turning it self off and not responding to the turn on button on the program and freezing my pc . it doesnt happen all the time but is becoming more of a problem can anyone help ?
I have been receiving the ATI display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered error. I formatted a partition on my PC with a fresh install of windows 7, installed latest catalyst drivers but no dice, ramped my fan speed up to 100% to troubleshoot and it definitely worked, stopped getting the error but pc starts seriously lagging after a while (playing spore & Black and White 2) playability also increases if I down the res from 1920 x 1080. This seems to indicate overheating n my opinion but I haven't seen the card go above 57 degrees. My chassis has no fans but with everything at stock should it overheat especially on old games. I have run Prime95 and Furmark all came out fine, no glitches. Max temp on Furmark was 84 degrees.
I am finding often that when I am running programs that even whilst they are running I get a response at the top of the program especially when I use Pro Tools say that it is not responding. I have adjusted my hard drives so that they don't go to sleep after a set period so why is it that I am constantly receiving this error?
As i write this my Firefox has stopped like 8 times from the time i opened Firefox. my programs stop for like a min and then continue like nothing happened. i used avg virus scan and used malwarebytes and spybot search and destroy and no threats are found. i play world of warcraft the game also freezes or use any programs they freeze for less then a minute and then it starts to run again. i can still minimize the application and my mouse moves around.
im running windows 7 on an Asus M3A32-MVP DELUXE
AMD Phenom II x4 940 8 gigs of ram Radeon hd 4890 graphics card
I'm getting constant not responding errors in almost all programs, everything from Firefox to Photoshop and Lightroom to simply accessing various folders on my drives (both internal and external). The majority of the time the program hangs for up to 30 seconds and says Not Responsing and then works again. In Photoshop and Lightroom however, I have to restart the programs, they never start responding again. AVG and malwarebytes haven't picked up anything.
I have installed Windows 7 RTM and everything is working just great for more then a month. But now I am experiencing some problems when I am installing larger programs or games. When installation starts, the system starts to freeze and I cant even normally switch windows or browse on internet. This lasts until the installation is complete, then everything comes back to normal. The same thing is happening on my laptop.
Does anyone know why and how can I resolve this problem?
what could cause programs to become responsive and slow down, even though my memory usage is only about 50%?
I have an i5-2430 @ 2.0Ghz, 5GB RAM, win7 64bit, AMD Radeon 6650M 2.0GB RAM graphics card.
My machine slows down when i try to run 2 specific programs simultaneously, viz. pokerstars and holdem manager 2. I've had a guy from the software company have a look and he's not sure what the problem is either.
I am having big trouble with different programs "freezing" up for about 10-30 sec very often. I have looked to see if it was my RAM causing this, but that doesnt seem to be the case as they are pretty stable and not working max.
I have been searching through the forum and found this which looks like my problem, however haven't solved my problem:
my power got knocked out in the middle of a system restore and since then a lot of my Microsoft programs and utilities have been having problems. Also, the start menu wont open by keyboard or mouse click, I can't uninstall programs from control panel, windows update will not work, and my audio just stopped working. I have already run a registry utility but not improvement. Please respond ASAP, as I am in finals week in my online class and have a paper due tonight.
Im running win 7 and IE 9 and im having problems starting programs and browsers. When i click on a browser nothing happens and i have to dbl click several times to get it to open. Then I have to wait a long time for it to load the home page. I have 4 browsers on my computer and the worst ones are IE 9 and firefox 4I replaced IE 9 a few days ago and it greatly improvedbut now it has reverted.
