Computer Restarted Middle Of The Night?
Dec 15, 2010
Lastnight I was woken by my computer starting up. It was a little after 3am. Its not the first time this has happened so I was wondering if anyone has any incite as to what could be causing this?
Ive checked the house for ghosts as well! Maybe I should take a look at the Event Viewer?

I got my hard drive replaced a few weeks ago (dropped my laptop) and had an OEM version of Windows 7 installed. After getting home and re-installing all my drivers /programs, I used it like I normally do. Fast forward 2 weeks. I wake up and press the power button but the laptop is dead (this is odd because I usually put it in hibernate on a full charge before I go to bed). This continued to happen every day, my computer s dying overnight. Since last week I have been observing it overnight. Whether it be hibernate or sleep, my computer will turn itself on and become completely unresponsive (sounds like it's on but the screen is off. My test to see if it's frozen is to hit the 'num lock' key to see if it lights up). This event is a 100% occurrence. The only way to turn it off is to hold the power button for 5 seconds. Basically if I leave my laptop in sleep or hibernate, it will turn itself on at a random interval and immediately freeze. It will stay this way until it dies or I do a hard shut down. Also, if I leave it alone and go afk while working, it will go into sleep mode and freeze completely.

Just wondering if anyone has any solutions to this other than a complete shutdown.
I place my computer in either stand by or hibernate and for some reason in the early ours of the morning it will turn itself on and sit on the login screen.
I think it must be some kind of back system operation which is sheduled but I have no idea what or where to find it.
Any ideas?

I have had a very odd problem. I have searched all over these boards and used all the repair utilities, but nothing has worked.I will post all my computer specs at the bottom of the message. My Windows 7 64 bit computer will run great all day long, but if I leave it on over night, none of my programs will start. If I double click on them the little circle will start up for a second, then just quit. I still have full use of the mouse and can click on the task bar to shut down or restart the computer, but no programs will work.

Using Windows 7 x64. For some reason every night at 12am the computer wakes up for no apparent reason. I've checked the task scheduler quite extensively and can't find anything that is set to go at 12am exactly. I only have three items in my library and 2 of those are disabled. I looked pretty good in the microsoft section but couldn't find anything. How to locate this bugger?

I had a virus that would redirect me to advertising, and it wouldn't let me scan for it on any anti virus software. No spyware worked, so I decided to load a new windows 7 on my laptop, fresh start. But as it got to the end of the installation where the menu said completing, it sat like that for 3 hours, so I turned it tooff, and now it keeps loading into the same thing that saids "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an un expected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click ok to restart computer< and then restart installation", I click ok, and it just keeps restarting into the same menu.

I'm writing this for a friend because he now cannot get into his Win7 computer after defragmenting his hard drive. The computer acts like it going to start up, but then an error comes up say "computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error".He has a back up disc, but still gets the same error when trying to use that. He cannot even go into repair mode when pressing f8.He does not have the original disc because it was preinstalled on his computer.

I have a computer which, every time it's restarted or turned on, the network icon always had that exclamation point, and it can't connect to the internet. All it needs to do is an IP config release/renew, then disable then re-enable the adapter, and it fixes itself. But upon reboot/restart, it happened again!

Windows is now giving me an error ''the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the computer, and then restart the installation''.But when I restart my PC and click run windows normally, it just gives me the same error.

Last night after all the troubles with getting W7 Pro 64bit installed, I finally managed to do it using a USB.
This morning I start installing all my programs and I noticed that my "Windows Experience" number was 1.0. I assumed this was down to it not recognising my graphics card (Geforce 9600M GS).
I downloaded the drivers from Nvidia and installed them. Upon restarting, I received an unexpected error message giving me the option to repair the problem or run windows normally. The latter just caused the machine to restart everytime it was chosen, and the former took the system restore window.
Upon doing this it managed to get me back to the desktop and everything seemed fine. I tried installing the drivers again and it led to the same problem.
By this point I decided to try and reinstall windows from my USB stick. I performed the first section of this, it started on its own as its supposed to, and began trying to complete the installation. At the point where it said "Setup is starting services", a warning appeared saying:
"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered and unexpected error. Installation cannto proceed. To install Windows click OK to restart the computer and the installation."
Sure enough, clicking OK leads me to exactly the same message.
After getting sick of this I tried installing W7 for a third time and exactly the same thing happened. Now I am stuck with the choice of 3 Windows 7's on boot, all three leading to the same error.
I am completely lost, can anyone help?

My neighbor has just brought around his desktop saying he tried to load Win 7 over a Vista installation, now he says he cannot install Win 7 and Vista appears to have gone. When I fire it up, I get a screen saying "starting Windows", this then goes to a window saying "Setup Starting Services" which then comes up with the message: "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the computer and then restart the installation"What has happened is: he has tried to install an upgrade version of win 7 that is meant to upgrade from the starter edition of Win 7 which he did not have installed and in doing so Vista has been wiped, but before I tell him this I am looking for a confirmation of my diagnosis, does this theory sound plausible? bye the way he does not have a Vista installation disk either!

Last night my computer was working fine before I left it on and went to bed. This morning I go to turn on the monitor to check my email and I see a windows setup screen with this error message:"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encounted an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."I have browsed some questions and answers about this error message but from all I have seen all individuals with this problem encountered it while they were reformatting or reinstalling windows 7 on a new computer. This just randomly happened to a working computer out of the blue. I'm not certain if there was a power surge but we do have surge protectors and our other 2 computers work just fine.I tried one solution of hitting Shift+F10 typing into the black command box "regedit" then going into the folders and changing the childcompletion from 1 to 3 in order to install windows. The problem is will uninstalling windows again wipe out my hard drives?

I woke up this morning to find my computer was frozen. So I forced it to restart by holding down the power button. Once it was booting back up I walked away from my pc for an hour and when I came back it just has a message saying "Cleaning up... Do not turn off your computer." It has been like this for over 4 hours. What causes my pc to go through this cleaning up phase and how long does it take? Also is it safe to restart my pc at any point if this takes way to long?

my laptop wouldn't start up and came up with an error. I went back to windows when it was first purchased so I wouldn't lose my files too. Now when I start up it says "Setup is starting services" and after about 5 seconds it comes up with the error:"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."The problem is whenever I click "OK" and it restarts it just comes back with the same error. It used to be a different error, Windows could not complete the installation for some reason that I cant remember. That also put me in this boot loop.I just want to find out how to fix this so I can go back to all my files that are very important. I cannot lose these files or my life will be over!

I started having the issues of my desktop turning itself on in the middle of the night, and the infinite boot loop a few weeks ago. I have tried a few of the fixes online such as restoring, checking task scheduler, and running the startup fix on the Windows disc. The pc will also randomly shut down once it loads Windows (put itself through the proper 'Windows is shutting down', not the sudden shut down of a hardware failure). Tonight I also got the bizarre happening of a black screen shortly after startup, with a small in the task bar saying something like 'This Windows version is not genuine'. I am using 7 Home Premium 64bit.

My friend recently (in the past month) bought a refurbished Dell computer from Wal-Mart. Everything seems to work fine. The problem she is having with it is that when she does 'shut-down' for the night it randomly restarts. No set amount of time just it restarts. They keep the PC in the bedroom so it wakes them up. We have added nothing which would cause this problem. I went to 'automatic restart after crash' and unchecked it as suggested and that did not work.

I have a gateway nv53a laptop with 8 gig onboard(only thing changed from spec)..every night around 2am(and I mean within 10 minutes before or after) my laptop freezes and I get the blue screen of death. I have to do a hard reboot in order to get back to windows.. when I reboot it tells me something about windows live not fully loading or something to that effect(I usually just click ok and close screen so I cant remember) Or start me down the path by suggestions on where to start? I know this isnt the most detailed query but I dont really know what to say as this is frustrating and has been going on now for over a month.

Last night I updated my GPU drivers(NVIDIA) and 5 mins later after I had rebooted from the Driver install, I get a Blue screen.
I tried to reboot but it gets stuck at Windows 7 Loading screen(Windows logo and black background), after about 10 mins of being stuck, I get a Blue screen flash on the screen and it reboots itself, repeating the process over and over again.
I try to boot in safe mode, it gets to the screen where it says "Loading Drivers". Then it goes to "Please Wait" and it stays there for about 10 minutes again until Blue screen flash and reboot on its own.
After that I got frustrated and decided to just stick the Win7 installation DVD into the machine and do a full reinstall. However, after it has gotten past the first screen where it "loads the files from disc"(literally the first screen you get when you try to install Win7), it turns black and won't respond anymore.(Serious "wait what?" happened in my mind at this point).
Next day at work I spoke to some IT guys about it, they suggested it was a hardware failure and then other guy suggested it has something to do with the RAM, whether not working or the RAM slots on my MoBo are broken. Also said that Dual channel might not be working either then. I got instructed to try each piece(I got 2 sticks of 4gb ram) of RAM seperately to see if I can get Windows to boot to see if it's faulty RAM.(I got the same suggestion from the place I ordered my PC parts from)
I am by no means expert, I know the basics of computers, but this is just mind boggling. I might have had faulty hardware all along(Browsers are very laggy and slow) and Windows loads really slowly. The computer is only 6 and half months old.

At the beggining of the installation, after selecting install windows instead of repair, i waited for some thigs to be checked (like installing services, expandind files ..) before the final check, which was "completing installation" my pc restarted. After the restart, i waited the final point to be checked, i waited for about 20 minutes, and i thought that the pc tilt, so i restarted it. After i started it I get this message "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the computer and then restart the installation." I did this many times and get the same result.
