I want to backup my computer on an external hard drive, which must be clean before the backup. There is one folder that I cannot delete. It is a folder with many subfolders. I cannot access the files in any of these subfolders. The message I get is: "Do want to permanently delete this folder? The folder contains items whose names are too long for the recycle bin." How can I get past this?

The folder and all its contexts disappears and therefore so does the window I just used to delete itYou can do this with filemenu tools, but only for PERMANENT delete. I think this is too dangerous. Also sometimes I regret deleting something immediately. I just do it out of convenience. I have looked into the custom commands of filemenu tools and it does not facilitate this action.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 last weekend and I must say its been a really bad decision, Win7 is not so much of an improvement to me. We always think the grass is greener. The other idiot thing I did or didn't do was not back up so I could roll back to Vista so I am stuck with this now and I really hate it.
My issue (1 of many) is I can't delete a folder, I am guessing its some residual from Vista its 'My Documents' but inside it is an endless list of empty folders 'My Documents/My Music/My Documents/My Music/My Documents/My Music/My Documents/My Music...etc.
When I try to delete I get this message... "The source file names are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter names before attempting this operation" I have tried everything, I have tried renaming every file in the folder, they just keep coming back, no matter how many i delete. I have tried using software such as Unlocker or devices to delete on boot, I have moved the folders location, even tried mapping a drive and deleting with command prompt - nothing.

I was pulling MP3 files onto a micro-sd card. One of them went nuts and put itself into dozens of folders-within-folders, all with the same name. When I try to delete it, it returns an error as pathname is too long and file is corrupted. Well, Windows, that's precisely why I want to delete it!

My computer came with Internet Explore already installed, but I use only Firefox and Safari. So, I wanted to uninstall IE. But after I did that, I was looking through my program files, and the IE file folder was still in there. So, I tried to delete it but it said I needed permission from "TrustedInstaller". So, I gave full permission to myself but it still didn't work. Then I downloaded LockHunter and it said that the file folder was unlocked but when I went to it, it said that I still didn't have permission to delete. Then I thought that if I opened the IE file folder, I could delete the stuff in it one-by-one but I only got to delete 13 out of 27 items. I closed the file folder and tried to delete all again in the hope that I deleted something that would unlock this option for the IE file folder but it didn't. I then downloaded Unlocker but when I clicked on it to start it up, it wouldn't open. Finally, I added "Take Ownership" to my Explorer right-click menu, and that worked. But now it says, "Folder In Use: The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." So I opened Task Manager and looked but no .exe or .dll or anything else pertaining to the IE file folder was running. Sometimes when I get this message I can restart my computer and it will work but it didn't do anything this time. I'm running out of ways that I know how to fix this. I usually don't need to ask questions, especially ones so long-winded, about computers but I'm feeling kind of lost here.
Since 2 days, in a certain folder, I cant rename, move or delete folders or files. Now, it has spread to my desktop as well. If I rename a folder, even a new folder, the name changes ''magically'' within seconds to restore to its previous name. If I move the folder or file, it comes back and if I delete it, it restores. I tried to make a system restore, even format (!), the problem persists. I use this folder to tag and rename my new mp3s so I have to be able to 1) rename, 2) move the folders the files and folders in it.

Upon booting up, i tried to open any program shortcuts on the desktop but multiple windows prompt me whether i want to delete the shortcuts. Any files or folders i clicked it happens too. Hence halting up the system.At first i thought it was some kind of virus or malware, so booted to safe mode to have it scan. But surprisingly, the problem still persist in safe mode. So i ran some live cds and managed to clean the system. Booted up normally and the problem's still there. Did last known good config, system restore, checked and updated the drivers but to no avail. View 16 Replies View Relatedi'm having a problem not with installing soundpools on my system, but with actually getting all of the samples recognised within the library of magix music maker. i know for a fact that it has something to do with it's inability to pick up on long file names that don't have an underscore for spaces on many of them.i did at one point see a video that explained how to use a program called advanced renamer to actually put the underscore in those filenames, without having to trawl through all of them and manually putting_the_underscores_in_cause_it_would_drive_anybody_barmy (the number of times i just hit the bracket key in that alone was almost enough). so i've tried looking through the forums on the ar website, and i looked for any useful 'how to' vid on Internet, but they're all about just clicking on 'adding styles' which isn't what i'm looking for. so i was wondering (as well as hoping and praying), if anyone with the voice of experience (if not expertise), could actually tell me how to do this with advanced renamer, cause i'm afraid logic isn't exactly my strong point.i get filenames in my sound samples from the soundpool in subfolders which are in turn in folders given a name to indicated their 'style' (rock, chillout etc).the filenames might look something like

but they need to look like
grand_piano_a.ogg
grand_piano_f_sharp.ogg
i am using windows 7, and magix music does work on 7, it just refuses to handle long file names like it should. magix has been asked about this numerous times, and nothing has been forthcoming from them, so i really have come here as a last resort to finding out how to get this sorted out.
I generally have pretty long File names on files on my pc. Not sure what the limit in digits is, but generally no problem. But, if I try to download many of these with a particularly long file name to a USB memory stick, it comes back with an error MSG. That the name is too long. But, it wasn't too long on my pc. Why is this happening ?

I have a windows server 2003 file server and a windows 2003 SBS domain controler. The file server is a member server. My windows 7 client is joined to the domain. When i log on to the domain, a script runs that maps drives from the file server to my comp. My domain account has Full Control over the drives on the file server.
Since installing windows 7 each time i open an mp3 file (Which are between 10 and 20mb) from the maped network drive, its taking 8 seconds to open each one. Baring in mind i have a GB lan with both my laptop network card and server network card set to 1gbps full duplex. I have a LOT of mp3 files that i browse through, but every time i select a differnt track it takes 8 seconds for it to open, same for the next track and the one after that and its begining to drive me nuts . Ive tried using differnt media players, for example winamp, media monkey, itunes and wmp and with each one i get exactly the same 8 seconds per music file.
This does not happen with one of my xp machines both over wirelesss and hardwired in to the lan, tracks open instantly from one to the other. After messing about with it for a while i stumbled accross something. If i map directly to shares on the network drive (which is set to read only) the tracks open instantly from one to the next no problem. However, if i set the share permission to âfull controlâ, i get exactly the same problem, 8 seconds per music file.
And i REEEEEEALLY dont know why its doing it. As ive said it works fine on windows xp, i have a gb lan with both cards set to 1gb full duplex (have even tried auto negociate ) and cat5 e cabling via a D-Link GB Switch. The only thing that seems to fix it is setting the share on the file server to read only. Now i could just play the tracks via the share and be done with it but, the shares are set to read only for a good reason. I have the network drive (where the shares live) maped to my computer because im always adding to, and manipulating folders on the drive, including the mp3 files. As a work around im having to play the tracks via the actual share and modifly or delete any mp3 files via the maped network drive.
During multiple file coping(file transferring) from one folders to other folders while minimizing all the folder at the time, check the status in taskbar, it showing all folder as file coping folder. is it expected in aero themas or its issue.
