Invisible Boot Folder On Non-OS Drive?

Oct 29, 2012

I still only have one IDE drive connected. On it there's an invisible folder, Boot, that contains a bunch of language folders, and a few additional files: BCD, BCD.LOG, BCD.LOG1, BCD.LOG2, BOOTSTAT.DAT, memtest.exe. The dates of these folders hasn't changed since May, which I suppose might've been when I installed Windows for the final time. So, what is this folder? Is it safe to delete? Did it have something to do with the hardware raid setup I used earlier? The motherboard is an ASUS P8P67 Pro.

Dual Boot Choice Invisible

Jul 22, 2009

I have a problem with running Windows 7 (RC, 7100 i think) and XP on the same machine:

I previously had 2 XP installations - one on the C drive for general useage and one on another drive for audio recording (both are SATA) My C drive XP has been slow and rubbish for a while and so I thought I would reinstall windows on that drive, which I've done before a few times. Then I thought I'd like to try Windows 7 so I installed that. During the installation I formatted the C drive (looking back on it maybe not so clever - there was no data I needed on there but maybe I deleted important files?) and installed 7 on there.

Now, my problem is that I can boot into windows 7 fine, but I am having real difficulty in getting XP to work, due to various things. I have used easyBCD to try and sort out my OS choice at startup, as per some walkthroughs on this forum. When I reboot I have a strange problem where I cant see the screen where I choose the OS, but I know its there because the computer waits for a bit, unless I press enter (to choose windows 7) or down and enter (to choose XP) - so its there but not being displayed on screen.

That's not such a problem, but when I choose XP from the OS select (or what I assume is XP given that I can't see it) the computer just restarts right from the beginning. There was no ntldr in the D drive (where the XP installation is) so i copied it from the XP installation disk.

Also, when I used to be able to get into the 'Studio' XP installation, it thought the D: drive was the I: drive, if you see what I mean..

Windows Defender Gone Due To Trojans Attack - How To Get It Back And Running

Apr 5, 2012

I lost Windows Defender. I had a few Trojans pop in last week. It was the Sirefef.p, and a few others I can't remember their other names. I think I have gotten rid of all of them. Now just trying to get back what they took. I had an Error code "0x80070424" with my Firewall. I followed these instructions here: [URL]. My Firewall is back up and running now. But my Windows Defender isn't working. It isn't even in my PC any-longer. These Trojans even uninstalled my Microsoft Security Essentials. But I got that reinstalled. I just need to know how to get my Windows Defender back up and running. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Locking Down Windows 7 Home Premium To Minimize Attack Surface

Jan 7, 2012

I am on a large LAN that I absolutely cannot disconnect from. I am using Windows 7 Home Premum with the latest updates. I use Comodo Internet Security (AV and firewall). Here is the problem: I am being hacked from the LAN level. What can I do to lock down my OS and minimize my attack surface? My Macbook doesn't succumb to this, but my fully updated Windows 7 PC gets hacked relatively easily from other users on the same LAN. I am experiencing remote code execution (IE9), unattended installs and system wide changes. What can I do to minimize my attack surface?

S.m.a.r.t. Hdd Trojan Attack?

Apr 23, 2012

Yesterday I was attacked by the s.m.a.r.t. trojan which has "hijacked" my files and hid them. I have followed the recommendation from Microsoft Answers, Security Essentials[URL] but it is not working. I got my desktop icons to show up but the screen is still black and I cannot see anything when I click the start button. It was suggested that I open up a new window in task manager, but when I click on Task Manager it reverts back to the fake virus scanner (S.M.A.R.T. HDD). I typed in "cmd" on the search bar, which opened up a dos prompt. I then proceeded to type in the following:

CD/ then hit enter
ATTRIB -H -R -S /S /D then hit enter

The prompt began to scroll through numerous files rapidly, but each line was preceeded by "access denied". So, when it finished, nothing was accomplished, as far as I know. I have not rebooted the PC yet. Any suggestion? I don't know if this was the incorrect thing to do, but, before I entered those dos commands I ran a copy of Windows Defender Offline Beta from disk. It said that it removed numerous trojans, but I fear that it only angered it. I will probably reformat my c:\ drive, b ut i want to gbet some files off of it prior to doing so.

Can OS Partition Access A Dual Boot Partition If Encrypted With Bitlocker

Aug 29, 2012

I'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.

If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?

Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?

Limited Connectivity After Malware Attack?

May 5, 2011

I know there are few Limited connectivity threads but ive checked them, non of them have the answer im looking for so ill just tell you the story.I accidentily downloaded a malware/adware program called Antimalware Doctor, i tried going into safe mode and using multiple programs to delete it (Malware bytes, Spybot - Search and Destroy & AVG command line scanner) they apprently deleted it , i loaded my comp back to normal mode and there it was back in there corner >

i managed to get rid of the program by bringing up task manager and removing the process called "sorttm700" (thats what the antimalware doctor program was called in the toolbar when i hovered over it) then going to my computer and searching for sorttm700, i deleted all the folders with sorttm700 in them and rebooted and no more annoying ads to buy fake software however i still have limited connectivity (it became limited while the malware was on my computer and before i took any action to resolve it)i am trying to use the same network as the computer i am using now ot send this message, i never get connection problems with my laptop using this connection i have tried reseting my router and modem as well as uninstalling the driver and reinstalling and now there is a red cross with no options to connect to an access point, my wifi on my laptop is on before you ask?

Boot Camp Windows 7 Resized Partition Now Wont Boot?

Aug 23, 2012

I have a Boot Camped Mac Mini with Windows 7. I recently needed to allocate more disk space to it as i only had a gig left, i booted into MacOS and used Disk Utility to make the Mac partition smaller, i rebooted into windows and downloaded software called 'Partition Wizard' from www.partitionwizard.com. I dragged the Windows partition all the way so that it used up all the Unallocated Space, it required a reboot to finsih and when it did it displayed an error such as thistatus:0xc0000255Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required informationI have the Installation Disk and i have tried repairing more than 3 times and it seemed to do nothing, so i tried using the CMD and bootrec.exe and now when i start the repair wizard it says there is no windows partition yet i can still try repairing things (Yet still does not repair anything). I downloaded EasyBCD but im on my Mac partition right now and its an exe, i have no clue how to run that within windows to try and repair the Bootloader. I do however have access to the BOOTCAMP partition through the mac side, and i can access all the files. Is there some way i can repair the bootloader through this?

Alert Pops Up Saying It Contains Viruses

Any website I try to go to, an alert pops up saying that it contains viruses and it recommends that I download "Win 7 Home Security" or something like it. Alerts also pop up telling me of spyware and other things my computer are being attacked by, and it again prompts me to purchase "Win 7 Home Security" I'm pretty sure this Win 7 thing is a virus. My friend told me he had it before and that he had to wipe his PC clean. Maybe I need to do that, but I don't know how. Do I need to wipe my PC completely clean? How would I go about doing that?

Message: Protect Against Computer Viruses

Nov 16, 2009

"Note: To protect against computer viruses, e-mail programs may prevent sending or receiving certain types of file attachments. Check your e-mail security settings to determine how attachments are handled" appears in emails with attachments that I send from Win 7. Default email client is Thunderbird, but from what I can gather, the message is Windows-generated.

I found one site that mentioned editing the registry, but when I went to the supposed location in the registry there's nothing there remotely similar to the so called "tip" someone suggested. I've found no other instances of suggestions on how to eliminate that message.

Keep My Computer Swift And Powerful And Without Viruses?

Jun 26, 2011

i recently bought a new computer with an installed Win7HomePremium. It is fairly good and these are a few of the properties:

-Intel i3 540
-4GB memory
-32bit OS

I was wondering what programs you can suggest me, I'm getting mixed messaged from all kinds of people on what software i should(n't) download and its getting annoying. So a general question could be what programs u suggest me to use in order to keep my computer swift and powerful and without viruses? It should be noted that the person who recomended these to me has a computer since 2003 which she uses the progs to clean it every 2-3 days. And it's working great, or so she says.So in addition it could be awesome if anyone can give me ONE answer instead of the mixed opinions - whether or not should i clean my computer by running such software and if so which ones and how often? Also is it true that IE is regarded as a problematic browser? I switched to Chrome without erasing IE and so far it's fairly good (except for random slow downs and sites not opening , and especially having trouble being on facebook too long )One more question that i believe , out of anyone, you can help with: By default, the folders are presented in list-like formation and it's kinda tiring going over every folder and ordering them differently. Can I do anything to make all of the folders sort in a different way? and possibly one of the more important ones - my technician told me that if i were to format my PC, and i'd have at that point over 200GB taken (out of the 500 i have ), the computer will erase some of MY files as well. If that is true - that's completely stupid. Is it ? And if so what should i do? (have one partition)BTW I often see all kinds of short versions of words here, like BSOD, SSD, UAC and what not. It would be very nice of you, considering many of the readers don't know these terms, to simply write the full word. It doesn't take much time.

Invisible Windows - Titlebar Moving To The Top Of The Screen?

Jul 6, 2012

This is a problem that has been plaguing me for a while, notably on Core Temp and some pop-up windows on Google Chrome. What would happen is, for example, I'd go to a livestream channel page and try to pop-out the chat. The window would do the maximizing animation (titlebar moving to the top of the screen) but there'd be no window. Minimizing and restoring the window would prove the same results. Other pop-ups, such as popping out the actual stream would load a window perfectly. This problem also replicates itself with the program Core Temp. Reinstalling both programs fixed the problem temporarily.

Does System Restore Occasionally Solve Viruses

Aug 4, 2012

I got a virus, when I accessed a website, and something was added to my Roaming folder. I immediately ended the process it started in task manager, and deleted the folder, but afterwards my computer lost its firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials went kablooey. After completely screwing up my computer using all this antivirus and virus deletion software (I scanned multiple times, It found the virus and *said* it deleted it, but another scan again would say otherwise. So after I screwed up my computer to the point that it wouldn't go into the loading screen for Windows, I did a System Restore.

I restored back 4 days before the virus incident had been downloaded, and despite people saying system restore won't fix it, my internet is back online, and I'm having no problems. Firewall and Windows update is back and working, and even Microsoft Security Essentials is back online. I'm scanning for viruses right now, so I want an honest opinion from T.H, and if you guys have a proper virus deletion thing that will actually delete it, not to come back several minutes later. Also, how do I stop websites automatically downloading things to my roaming folder (%appdata%)?

How To Boot Windows 7 On Another Partition

I currently have Windows 7 64 bit installed in two partiions:C: drive and E drive. Everytime I start, windows from the C: partition automatically boots. How do I get the Windows from E drive to boot? Ultimately I'd like to use the windows from E drive (which has all my installed software) and delete the one from C: drive. The problem is that I installed the one on C: drive most recently. (Long story short, I tried to delete and old version of windows unsuccessfully, and had to unmount and reformat the partition.)When I go to System Configuration under the Boot tab, I only see Windows in one partition (C: drive), so it won't allow me to delete that.
