View 2 Repliesi have recently landed a job where i will be trouble shooting windows systems. this has brought me to realize hey i have no idea how to find a remove viruses without reformatting the computer. nor do i know how to check a file to see if it was safe or not, even if i opened it in a virtual pc or sandbox.currently i have no money, so going to school for a computer science education is not in my near future, but i have access to books and internet resources that i can learn on my own from. so what i need help with is where should i start. can anyone give some advice of how to go from a user that knows how to download drivers for your video card and replace broken hard drives to someone that can find viruses you never knew you had. what should i learn first so i am not watching Internet lectures that are above my head thus i don't get much from them.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThe laptop is a Toshiba L455D-S5976 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. how to take it off of the computer but it was to no avail- downloading Spyware Doctor wasnt possible because the machine's internet connection is shot (due to Win 7 Antispyware 2012). I had Malwarebytes previously installed from an earlier fix, I update the definitions and scanned the PC, it came back with a few results but removing the found items had no effect. Same situation for SuperAntiSpyware and AdAware. I had to yank the malware out through the registry and now nothing can install, the PC is saying that there is no hardware (no ethernet controller, wifi, audio or anything). Windows Aero is disabled and isnt available to be selected- as if the graphics card doesnt support it.

Default email client is Thunderbird, but from what I can gather, the message is Windows-generated.
I found one site that mentioned editing the registry, but when I went to the supposed location in the registry there's nothing there remotely similar to the so called "tip" someone suggested. I've found no other instances of suggestions on how to eliminate that message.

I was wondering what programs you can suggest me, I'm getting mixed messaged from all kinds of people on what software i should(n't) download and its getting annoying.So a general question could be what programs u suggest me to use in order to keep my computer swift and powerful and without viruses? It should be noted that the person who recomended these to me has a computer since 2003 which she uses the progs to clean it every 2-3 days. And it's working great, or so she says.So in addition it could be awesome if anyone can give me ONE answer instead of the mixed opinions - whether or not should i clean my computer by running such software and if so which ones and how often? Also is it true that IE is regarded as a problematic browser? I switched to Chrome without erasing IE and so far it's fairly good (except for random slow downs and sites not opening , and especially having trouble being on facebook too long )One more question that i believe , out of anyone, you can help with: By default, the folders are presented in list-like formation and it's kinda tiring going over every folder and ordering them differently. Can I do anything to make all of the folders sort in a different way? and possibly one of the more important ones - my technician told me that if i were to format my PC, and i'd have at that point over 200GB taken (out of the 500 i have ), the computer will erase some of MY files as well. I got a virus, when I accessed a website, and something was added to my Roaming folder. I immediately ended the process it started in task manager, and deleted the folder, but afterwards my computer lost its firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials went kablooey. After completely screwing up my computer using all this antivirus and virus deletion software (I scanned multiple times, It found the virus and *said* it deleted it, but another scan again would say otherwise. So after I screwed up my computer to the point that it wouldn't go into the loading screen for Windows, I did a System Restore.
I restored back 4 days before the virus incident had been downloaded, and despite people saying system restore won't fix it, my internet is back online, and I'm having no problems. Firewall and Windows update is back and working, and even Microsoft Security Essentials is back online. I'm scanning for viruses right now, so I want an honest opinion from T.H, and if you guys have a proper virus deletion thing that will actually delete it, not to come back several minutes later. Also, how do I stop websites automatically downloading things to my roaming folder (%appdata%)?
I recently had some spyware hit my computer and then removed. Since removing the spyware, one of the things i have noticed that is not working properly since is that when i click on the "Start" Menu, then try to highlight and open one of the programs in the "All Programs" folder, i get a message sub the program saying "empty" and then the programs will not open. i have tried to update windows and also run a command prompt computer scan.

I'm running Win 7 64 bit. On my previous systems, I generally rely on the following 3 free utilities for system protection:
- Avira AntiVir
- Spybot Search and Destroy
- Ad-aware
I've heard a lot of good things about Microsoft Security Essentials, and at least as a AV tool it's up there with Avira, Avast, etc. But how about its effectiveness as a malware / spyware blocker, detector, and remover?
Can it safely replace all 3 of the aforementioned products? Or should I use something else in conjunction with MSE?
I've scanned my computer a gazillion times and nothing shows up *sigh* i've formatted my computer twice and the same thing continues to happen

I tried downloading it again with the wizard but it said it said the wizard was interrupted and try again when I do it does the same thing. i tried downloading it from the Windows site and after downloading the pop up said "You do not need to install this software because Windows Defender is included in Windows Vista (I have Windows 7) You can access Windows Defender from the security section of the Windows Control Panel". Again, I tried this but when I click on the words "turn Defender on" it just keeps going on and on without doing anything.

Looking to the diagnostic tool that comes with the download, it gives me this:"The system is unable to connect to the update server [URL] due to a likely spyware/malware infection on port 6522" EDIT: Didn't want for it to actually post a link, because it makes my post look sketchy. So I added in the [dot]s. It doesn't work going straight to it anyhow.So I naturally go, "Say what?" and immediately run MalwareBytes. Didn't find a thing. I download a little utility I found called TCPView and can't even locate the port (6522) as being active. "Hmm," I say. So I netstat. -ab. -naob. Still don't see the port. To hell with it. I am going to ask the port if it's talking to anyone. I make a .bat file with this inside:

I see the port. I see it is receiving packets, doing port things, but I have no idea what is going to or from it. Now I am questioning whether I am infected, or if this beta client is just screwing up and thinking a process is hostile when it isn't. But I would really like to find out in case, you know, it's actually something malicious.I am currently running AVG as kind of a last-ditch, but it's almost finished and I don't expect it to find anything, especially after MalwareBytes didn't. I have only seen one other person online say they had the same problem, and someone on Yahoo answers told them to go for the old run Rkill, then run MalwareBytes, but seeing as I'm neither getting the signs associated with the Rkill/eXplorer.exe processes, and there are about ten utilities each designed for a specific variant, I am not so keen on trying every single one out when that doesn't seem to be the problem.

restoring Windows Firewall and Defender. I am running Windows 7 64 Bit. A few weeks ago I was infected by a trojan called "System Progressive protection". Ive deleted it from my startup programs but i still think its somewhere in my computer and i cannot find it.
